INTRODUCTION

This project is a live undertaking by Srishti School of Art, design & technology for BMRC and will focus on the Peenya Metro Station as a pilot project. The project offers an opportunity to be a part of the creation of an immersive art and design experience that marks the location and station and its architecture. The larger objective of the project is to develop culture links between different locations through interactive means creating new experiences for the city.

process
8
The process started with exercises related to observing a space- Architectural structure and its surroundings. The learnings started on the prior established purple metro line and then moved to the green metro line. I observed vicinity plays an important role in the functioning of the metro station, as a busy area like MG Road provided a larger footfall to its metro station than a distant area like Swami Vivekanand Road.
9
MG ROAD METRO LINE- SWAMI VEVAIKANANDA STATION Sketches We started with drawing the sketches of metro stations from four different distances. I opted for a staight road so got linear prospectives of the structure from different distances. Starting from further away to getting closer. This exercise was very helpful in developing an eye to see an architectural structure and notice the relation of station to its vicinity.

MG ROAD METRO LINE- SWAMI VEVAIKANANDA STATION Metaphor The Lighthouse stands alone and tall in both light and darkness. It along with its beacon is a focal point which symbolizes strength, guidance and safe harbour. It also symbolizes hope as it denotes sailors that land and calm water is close by. Taking inspiration from this, I observed the area in the periphery of Swami Vivekanand metro station consisted of small houses and low buildings and the station stands as a tall standalone structure. It gave me a sense of hope, a ray of light for development in that area. Metaphor exercise made me realise the nostalgic aspect between people i.e communities and the house or structures.

13
YELAHANKA MAP Tracing area in the vicinity of 2kms from Srishti Campus I discovered different zones in the radius of 2 kms. Starting with commercial area consisting of educational building, shifting industrial area with colonies consisting of chemical and soap factories and finally entered the residential area after crossing the railway track. I also noticed the change in air. The Commercial and industrial areas being polluted by vehicles and soap smell whereas the residential area had a lot cleaner air.

GREEN LINE - PEENYA SETRO STATION Sketches “You visit a place for the first time only once. Peenya metro station being the project site, it was very important for us to observe the architectural details the structure holds. Sitting and sketching at the station facilitated development of prospective ideas that could be applied to the space. It also helped in calculating the footfall and the kind of passengers who travel in metro.
16
17
PEENYA METAPHOR It was a group exercise. Peenya being a growing industrial area that is gradually entering the city, we presumed Peenya to be a child who is entering his puberty. He is excited to get facial hair as a sign of his adolescence and welcomes it with pride and joy, but once it starts growing patchy and weird he wants to shave it off and get rid of it. In the same way as peenya is moving closer to the developed life of the city it is facing problems like pollution and inflow of urban crowd into their space.

PEENYA METRO STATION Mapping Peenya is one of the biggest industrial estates in Asia with an annual turnover of around Rs. 8,000 crores. It contributes over Rs. 800 crores in terms of Central excise, customs duty, commercial tax and corporate tax. But it wasn’t like this always. To understand the population and uses of metro in the area, I conducted a survey regarding the families, their cultural background, educational and economic status. I gathered some vital facts like a large chunk of people residing there had moved to this area 40 years ago. They have seen Peenya from an industrial area with poor infrastructure, crying for a proper underground drainage system, roads, footpaths and streetlights to becoming a major Industrial landmark of Bangalore. I discovered people of different cultural backgrounds; Tamil, Malayali, Maharashtrian and Marwari reside there. The number of people who aspire to travel in metro someday, to who take it as an amusement ride once a week till people who travel in it every day as a source of conveyance.

CLIENT - Mr. Vasant Rao’s Visit “To make Peenya a destination station that is unique to its location.”
SEMINAR ONE
22
The first seminar displayed our design process and research exercises of the metro circuit. We had set up a small exhibition consisting of our work done so far to portray our research base to the client and pursue his opinion on the same. This was our first formal interaction with the client and we also came up with queries and concerns related to the project. This seminar severed as the base for developing initial ideas for the space, as the client intended to make this station an “art destination” where people come specially to see the artworks of the station.

24
25
QUESTIONS / CONCERNS After our individual research of the area, we shared the collected data with each other in class. This led us to a broader understanding of the vicinity in terms of communities, industries, economic level, educational level and lifestyle. It made us aware of the plethora of issues and facilitated shaping the objective of our individual projects.
26
27
INITIAL IDEAS After being well versed of the concerns of the area, I knew what subject to work for. I wanted to take on the issue related to people and the communities. Client Mr. Vasant Rao shared with us that the station receives a footfall of only 20,000 people a day in comparison to 1,00,000 expected. So, I wanted to create an place in the metro station where people can pause and engage with the structure.

“To make Peenya a democratic structure” i.e. to the people, for the people and of the people.
PROPOSAL 1.5
IDEA- To make a place in the metro station that reflects people and their lives in Peenya. After walking through the streets I noticed houses there reflect unity in diversity, even though the house structure is more or less the same but the colour and their balconies make them look unique to the people who resides inside. IMPLEMENTATION- To prepare a façade of houses with different plant display in their balconies.

SITE SELECTION Through our interaction with people during survey in Peenya we noticed that people find metro intimidating, few reasons being advanced technology and financial conditions. The intention was to make metro station more accessible to the people of Peenya by displaying a part of their own identity using architectural elements of their houses. So, to invite people of Peenya I wanted to place the artwork outside the station. The triangular space aptly fulfilled the dual purposes of (a) creating a space that acknowledges people of the neighborhood and (b) a place where they can sit and interact.
34
35
SITE MODEL This was my first experiment with the composition. I tried different scale and how artwork could flow through different sides of the column. It also gave me an understanding of which elements to choose like balconies, doors, windows, staircases etc and the things those were not working like placing human figures made it too literal.
36
37
PHOTO COLLAGE For my better understanding, I made this composition to experiment with different prospectives, density of elements and scale. This gave a clearer vision of how I wanted to shape the mural.
38
39
FIRST SKETCH VISUALISATION “To bring in essence of Peenya to the metro station through the medium of an architectural element- Balconies. This was a juxtaposition of architectural elements like balconies, staircases, doors and windows. The semi open door and windows displayed flashes of life inside.
40
41
PEENYA METRO STATION - Site Visualisation This was a projection of the sketch on site to see how it would finally look. Such analogous representation was useful in calculating the changes required and if scale and density were working.

PEENYA METRO STATION WORK IN PROGRESS EXHIBITION
FIRST PROTOTYPE - PEENYA EXHIBITION
46
These balconies spread over the faรงade not only represent the architecture style of houses in Peenya but also provides a glimpse of life peeping though the doors and windows. The basic idea was to make the metro station more accessible and approachable for the people. So elements that represent them, their houses and their lives were used to provoke a sense of belongingness.

SFS MURAL Composition – Illusion painting
SECOND PROTOTYPE - SFS MURAL
50
In my first prototype in Peenya I struggled with creating depth through light and shading, so in my second prototype I wanted to explore that. The concept of composition in Peenya was to create a juxtaposition of balconies with glimpse of life inside the semi open doors peeping outside. The entire composition proposed to create an intimate fantasy space for people in the alien structure of metro station. In SFS I tried to create a small corner that created the same inside-outside illusion.

THIRD PROTOTYPE - 3D & SHADOW
54
For the last prototype I wanted to add another layer of 3D projections using materials from BMRC’s scrap yard. 3D elements would build on aesthetics and make the mural more engaging. After having a better understanding of light and shadow through second prototype, I intended to create depth using light and shadow this time.

REFLECTION
58
I come from space design background and have mainly done theoretical work in the past, so this project offered me the opportunity to experience the practical aspect of space design. I was prepared to work hands on for this project. It was also my first client based project in college and working for BMRC on the metro station I thought would add up a lot to my knowledge about public art and space design. It added another aspect of spatial design, as metro station is a transitory space hence the impact you want to make on the audience has to be strong so that the experience stays with them and they visit again. Working on-site was very different from classroom learning. It made me realise how to deal with factors like noise, setting up coordination with people you are working for and with your own team. The process followed by us as a class from the beginning of the project created a strong research base for us and facilitated my project concept. After our surveys in Peenya I realised how much was given by the people there and through theis project I wanted to acknowledge that. So, I came up with the concept of creating a space that represents people of Peenya and provokes a sense of belongingness for them in the metro station. The struggle in the project for me was creating depth through light and shadow. Playing with perspectives dint come easy either. Establishing a flow/ movement through the composition was also a gentle reminder. Public Art in Peenya was great fun. I realised that you need to be open to as criticism as you are to appreciation. This project helped me extend my potential and strengths. It was a great learning experience.
