President’s Message Dear Colleagues, The tragic death of Professor Anthony Marmarou, the President of the 5th Hydrocephalus Workshop, has left a great gap not only in the planning of this meeting but also in the basic science and clinical research in Hydrocephalus. His final message to us was that we should “continue”. It was extremely important to Tony that we continue to work to better the lives of those with hydrocephalus. Specifically he has asked me to lead the meeting in Crete in May of this year. I am committed to continuing his important work and ask for the support of all of you to make this a successful Workshop. Under the leadership of Professor Marmarou and Workshop Vice President Dr. Kouzelis, most of the planning for the meeting as well as the choice of invited speakers has already been done. The venue for the meeting at the Creta Maris Convention & Golf Resort on the beautiful and historically critical island of Crete is perfect for the sharing of information and solving of critical controversies in an enjoyable setting. Your ideas matter and we are looking forward to hearing what you have to say. I extended the deadline for the submission of abstracts until March 15 but will still commit to having the abstracts reviewed and the notifications complete by April 1. The deadline for early registration will also be extended until March 15. Best Regards,
Harold L. Rekate M.D. President of the 5th International Hydrocephalus Workshop

Vice-President’s Address Dear Colleagues and Friends, The Hellenic Neurosurgical Society is particularly pleased to be involved once again this year in organizing the 5th International Hydrocephalus Workshop on the charming Aegean island of Crete. Drawing on the fact that the previous workshops were a complete success, we believe that this event will be a major turning point, and will make a significant contribution to the effort to ensure further understanding of timely diagnosis and treatment of hydrocephalus. The wide number of topics covered, the outstanding credentials of our guest speakers and the option of all workshop participants to become actively involved in its proceedings, guarantee that this objective will be achieved. We would like to hope that we will be able to follow Ariadne’s lost thread through the ruins of the ancient Minoan labyrinth on the mythical island of Crete, and find the much sought after solution to the ancient Hippocratic riddle of hydrocephalus. We are also very pleased that this International Hydrocephalus Workshop will follow the 24th Annual Hellenic Congress of Neurosurgery with international participation and the 4th Annual Neurosurgery Nurses Meeting (19 - 20 May 2010). Simultaneous interpretation of the proceedings into English and the presentation of papers in both Greek and English will also allow you to participate in our Society’s Congress which you are most welcome to attend. The members of the Organizing Committee are making every effort to ensure that you have an unforgettable stay and hope that the island’s boundless natural beauty, Crete’s famed diet and entertainment, as well as the warm local welcome will make sure that the 5th International Hydrocephalus Workshop will become one of your sweetest memories. Best Regards,
Konstantinos Kouzelis Vice President of the 5th International Hydrocephalus Workshop

Crete
will host the 5th International Hydrocephalus Workshop Crete is the southest point of Europe in the crossroad of three continents and five seas. It is the meeting point of different populations, by ancient and disparate cultures of centuries. It is the largest island in Greece and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean Sea, with a unique blend of elements from the creative assimilation of various cultural forms in a natural frame of astonishing beauty. Crete is full of beautiful beaches, traditional villages, each with its own history and huge variety of gorgeous landscapes. Crete’s history dates back to 5,000 years ago. Crete was the centre of the oldest Greek civilization, the Minoan civilization (circa 2600 - 1454 BC), which was destroyed by natural disaster. As a Greek city state, Crete successively became part of the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the Venetian Republic, the Ottoman Empire and the modern state of Greece. The unique combination of tradition with its modern life and the amazing scenery makes Crete one of the world’s favourite travel destinations.
Venue & Accommodation The Hellenic Neurosurgical Society and the Department of Neurosurgery of the Medical College of Virginia (Commonwealth University, USA) in affiliation with the International Society for Hydrocephalus and CSF Disorders have the pleasure to invite you to Crete from 20-23 May 2010 for the 5th International Hydrocephalus Workshop, which will take place at Creta Maris Convention & Golf Resort in Hersonissos.

Cultural Programme & Visits Rethymno - Chania 21.05.2010 Friday
Minimum Participation 20 persons
You start early in the morning at the panoramic coastal highway that’s heading towards the west of Crete and Chania. Chania, Crete’s most beautiful town, built on the sea, represents a satisfactory mixture of old and new traditions both in architechure and in the way of life. The old town, with its beautiful port, consists of buildings from both the Venetian and Turkish periods. Walking through the narrow streets is like a trip through the history of Crete. Here, around the crescent shaped harbor, you will also find many excellent restaurants, bars and small shops, as well as the famous cruciform covered market, with its middleeastern atmosphere. The unique melting pot of history, which forms this town, is part of its enduring charm. On your way back, the journey continues to Rethymno, a noteworthly town full of contrasts, distinguished by its history and the relics of former oppressors. The town nestles against the edge of the sea. It lies approximately half-way between Heraklion and Chania.

Phaestos - Gortyna - Matala 22.05.2010 Saturday
Minimum Participation 20 persons
Bus-ride through the fertile Plains of Messara with stops at the great archaeological sites of Gortyna and plenty of time for swimming at Matala. You will pass vineyards - the center of the sultana producing industry on the island and others, where grapes are cultivated for the Malvasia wine - which flank the eastern ridges of the Ida Mountain range. And then descend the foothills of the Ida Mountains and come to the Messara valley, Crete’s largest and most fertile area of agricultural production. You will first visit Phaestos, the second largest Minoan palace, where King Radamanthos, brother of King Minos, ruled. The site affords a panoramic view of the Messara Valley, the imposing Ida Mountain range and the Asteroussia Mountains stretching in front of the Libyan Sea. The next visit will be ancient Gortyna, once capital of the old roman prefecture, where the longest coherent legal text of the Dorian’s was found. There you can also see ruins from Roman, Doric and Byzantine times. Then you will take a break at Matala, have free time for lunch and enjoy the crystal-clear water from which, according to the myth, Zeus and Europe emerged. There will be time to visit the famous stone-age caves in the cliffs near the beach. Time Schedule 09:00-18:00 Price 80 ₏ per person Includes bus transfer, English guide, lunch & entrance at Phaestos & Gortyna

Knossos Palace – Archanes & Wine Tasting Where the Ancient Culture meets God’s Nectar
23.05.2010 Sunday
Minimum Participation 20 persons
The most brilliant Aegean island civilization was the Cretan or Minoan Civilization, which flourished in Crete mainly in the 3rd and 2nd millennium B.C. and took its name from Minos, the legendary king of Knossos. While in other parts of Europe civilization had barely begun to glimmer, the great Minoan kings managed to make Crete a mighty sea power. Wealth and treasures were amassed, which led to the creation of the renowned Cretan palaces of Knossos between 2200 and 1550 B.C., where the arts flourished. The Cretans enjoyed home comforts such as running water, bathtubs and complex plumbing systems. We are heading to the little town of Archanes, which stands on the slopes of low hill. The area produces the best Cretan table grapes and the famous wine. We walk through the narrow lanes with picturesque neo-Classical houses whose balconies and courtyards are like a permanent floral exhibition. We finish our journey with a last visit to a winery and we will visit the production plant, the bottling and labeling area. Then a film will be presented showing the present-day wine production from beginning to the end. A visit to winery is not complete without a wine tasting… Time Schedule 09:00-14:30 Price 57 € per person Includes bus transfer, English guide, entrance at Knossos & wine testing
