ENERGY LOSSES IN BUILDINGS Environmental damage from high energy consumption
‌ we have to search for energy efficient & cost saving solutions
WHY ENERGY EFFICIENCY? Energy efficiency has gained more and more importance because climate change is one of the most important global problems in the 21st century. Our environment is damaged by the emission of greenhouse gases such as CO2. In order to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere, energy efficiency has to be increased.
Given that it is necessary to use energy and that renewable energy sources by far cannot cover the global and ever increasing demand, the only alternative is to use energy as efficiently as possible.
According to the Energy Information Administration, after China and USA, among major polluters only India is expected to have significant growth of emissions over the next 20 years
Sources of CO2 Emissions in the EU The single largest source of emissions is from the energy used for buildings – in particular space heating.
WHY ENERGY EFFICIENCY in BUILDINGS? Analyzing the different sectors which are responsible for the emission of CO2, it becomes clear that
The largest source of emissions stems from energy used in buildings, in particular space heating In general, consumption in buildings accounts for some 41% of the energy used in the EU. In contrast, both transport and industry for some 30 %, respectively. Households are responsible for one quarter of CO2 emissions in the EU.
There are studies indicating that the most cost effective measures available are energy efficiency measures in buildings.
WHY INSULATION? There are different alternatives to improve energy efficiency in buildings, e.g. the promotion of electricity generated from renewable resources, usage of low energy light bulbs etc. and finally the usage of much more insulation in buildings. Within all these alternatives, Insulation is the most energy efficient and, at the same time, the most cost effective way of achieving energy savings objectives. Improved thermal insulation of buildings (old and newer) will give immediate and long lasting results in terms of reduced energy consumption and hence CO2 emissions ‌ BETTER INSULATION WARMS THE HOME, NOT THE PLANET!
