m is
for art
INTRODUCTION Back in the day I’d imagine people would go to exhibitions to view something exciting that they wouldn’t normally see. Art was exciting and thus special, but nowadays in a world of colourful adverts and constant entertainment the art at art exhibitions has become dull by comparison. I consider it a failure of art when the text next to your portrait is more interesting than the portrait itself. As someone who grew up with the internet, I don’t get a lot of stimulation from art exhibitions. Pictures don’t make me think or make me feel – they honestly bore me. If I wanted to see a default portrait I’d get equally as much out of Google Images. Art to me isn’t an emotional process, it’s one based purely on aesthetics and creativity. The technical side to photography isn’t as important to me as the result. In my opinion the point of art is aesthetic pleasure, not storytelling. The goal of my project was to make art which oozes creativity; art which is as colourful and poppy as the adverts on tv. I want to make portraits interesting to my generation. I also want to incorporate an element which I believe often goes missing in portrait photography: texture. A lot of artists use colour to great success, whilst the textures displayed in the photographs are kept simple. I want to change that. My project began in London in autumn of 2018. I was bored with the school project I was doing, so I decided to start playing around in photoshop. The result was the beginning of my experimentation and the birth of the m brand. The first m is displayed after the main m collection. The m is for art collection is seperated into three parts: m0.x, mx and nonm. The first part, m0.x, takes already existing portraits and adds texture and colour to them to make them more interesting. The second part; the mx portraits are completely my own with my own portraits and my own textures. These are the selected complete projects that show an artistic evolution. The nonm projects are the first m projects along with the rejected m projects. The reason that these are included is because I believe it clarifies the artistic changes a bit more. The reason for the simple names and layout is because I want to put all the focus on the artworks - and not what’s around it, and because it adds a clear timeline to my artistic change. -m
