Biography I began my artistic career doing pen and ink renderings of historical architecture. I began painting in 1980, first in gouache, then in acrylics. Artists whose work I admire and draw inspiration from include Edward Hopper, Charles Sheeler, Richard Estes and Vermeer. I am most interested in depicting what Alan Watts called the mystery of the ordinary; the workaday world we live in without seeing until we are forced to focus upon it, as in a painting. Nearly all my paintings are based on photographs I have taken, primarily of Southern California scenes, over the years. Though it was never my intention to depict nostalgic scenes, many of the images I have painted have disappeared or been radically altered in the ever-changing landscape that is Southern California. Thus nostalgia is thrust upon the works. But the distinctive light remains, which is what I attempt to capture in my painting. That, and the built environment that we humans inhabit, where nature manifests itself only in weeds and palms emerging from cracks in the hardscape, and the smooth blue sky. Phyllis Lutjeans, Museum Educator and former curator, has said of my work: “Although Michael Ward may be called a neorealist painter his work can ultimately be described as abstract realism. The picture image is photographically realistic, but within the context of the painting his compositions are complex and almost abstract. Deciphering the work section by section one sees how a multitiude of individual complete compositions are put together to form the entire work. For me the viewer is confronted by a realistic image that puzzles us and clearly tells the story simultaneously.� As a painter, I am self-taught. In my day job, I work as an Art Director and Graphic Designer.

My name is Karen Hilliard. I grew up outside of San Francisco, CA, in a beach town. I fell in love with art in high school and ended up taking my passion to San Francisco State University to receive my BA in Painting and Drawing. I love the fact that I can take a sketchbook with me wherever I travel and then bring home drawings that I will always cherish. Growing up by the ocean drew my imagination to exploring the world. Meeting new people and being faced with new challenges and environments gives me great motivation. I currently live in the beautiful state of Nevada where I go hiking, climbing, take photos, and enjoy nature. As far as my watercolor process goes, I love this medium for the way I can get such fine details and the way they bleed together on the paper. I love the control I have with watercolor and using tiny brushes. I enjoy creating each piece and spend a lot of time on each painting, so I choose to paint from photographs or my own sketches. My goal as an artist is to give the viewer a different perspective of nature. I focus on rocks and trees as a whole to create an image in my larger works. I emphasize the intricacy of the lines and texture in my smaller works to show the beauty of simplicity. My love for the outdoors is where all my passion comes from. michael ward APM: First off I would like to congratulate you and your painting Mi Salon as being chosen by our juror as the Best in Show of our 2012 Landscapes Art Exhibition. Itʼs a beautiful work of art and the other day I was leaving my gallery in the Santora Arts Building in Santa Ana and I walked right past this shop. I was thinking, this place really looks familiar. What compelled you to paint the Mi Salon? MW: I, too, discovered Mi Salon while wandering around the Arts District in Santa Ana. It was early morning, and while waiting for galleries to open I took the shot. The girl was another photo taken on the same street further up the block. So even though she was not actually in front of the salon, she was headed that way, and the guy inside would have surely checked her out, as he was checking out the strange gringo taking pictures. APM: I read in your bio that you are a self taught artist. What made you want to become an artist and what drives or inspires you as an artist? MW: I started painting primarily to see if I could do it, and because I had some photos Iʼd taken that I thought would make good paintings. Those first efforts came out well, so I kept going. My early inspiration was the work of Charles Sheeler, Richard Estes and others that work from photographs. For me the process is rewarding—Iʼm always discovering elements in the source images that I didnʼt see when the photograph was taken (like the guy inside Mi Salon). Itʼs a reminder that we only see the surface of things in our day-to-day experience. There are always deeper truths to be found, and painting helps me discover them. APM: As an artist myself I am always curious to know another artists process of creating. Can you explain your process? MW: The paintings always start with photos, though I donʼt always take photos with the intention of making paintings from them. This applies especially to photos (slides) I took back in the 1970s and 80s, before I began painting. Iʼm still discovering the paintings in some of those. In the old days I would project slides onto canvas, but these days the compositions are refined on the computer, where I crop, and add or subtract elements, and maybe tweak the colors. I make a reference print at full size, and use that as a guide. APM: What is next for you and your art? Do you have any big exhibitions coming up and if people would like to find your art, how would they do this?

And for the month of January, I will have a show at StudioGallery in Irvine ( www.studiogallery.net ). Iʼm having an opening on January 19, from 12 to 4 pm. His work has been seen in numerous magazines and publications including Graphis, Art in America, Smithsonian, Time, Newsweek, as well as a six page feature and cover in the Santa Fean Magazine. Stuart has won over thirty awards for his paintings and has been featured in many traveling exhibits across the United States, Europe and Japan. He has been associated with numerous galleries including Michael Eagle Gallery in New York, the Carol Thornton Gallery in Santa Fe, the Stetter Gallery in Phoenix and the Karen Lynne Gallery in Boca Raton. Stuart's interest in classical art is revealed in his paintings through a unique interpretation of contemporary styles and techniques. His studio is located in Boca Raton, Florida.
