Statement In my body of work I explore the vulnerability of the masculine figure. I have used my own body as a source of reference in order to interrogate my own identity. The male figure in my works can be found in different foetal positions. This passive position challenges the stereotypical patriarchal role of the masculinity I experience in society. I explore a range of atmospheric surfaces that interact with the passive figure. These emotive surfaces create a dialogue with the figure that at times create a contrast between the two. It is this relationship that creates a dream like world and escape from reality and conforming to the social construct of masculinity.

Statement My body of work is influenced by my personal experience of working as an informal trader in Johannesburg and Soweto. I sell various goods to support myself. In the works I pay homage to the informal traders who create work for themselves to make a little bit of money to survive. I call them “self-actualizers “because they make things happen in our desperate economy. I have focused on the print medium of dry point as it allows me to draw directly into a metal plate. The high tonal contrast in the figures and landscape reflect the harsh contrasting hardships of our landscape. In contrast to the dense tonalities of the works, I have included soft light, embossing of pieces of found materials. The embossing conceals and reveals the Afropolitan vending scenes that unfold in the prints.

Statement Maps without boarders is strongly influenced by my multi-cultural background. My mother is a Sotho woman and my father is Tsonga. You can say I am a hybrid. Coming from this multicultural background, has made it easy for me to interact and communicate with people from different cultural and religious groups. My body of work embraces the diversity of our continent’s people and is a celebration of African heritage. The different fabric patterns I have used in my work derive from fabrics associated with African cultures across the continent. The fabrics define groups of people who are recognizably African, although they are originally produced in Holland using Dutch materials and imported to the African continent. I have combined patterns from different cultural groups to make new patterns that are hybrids. The patterns promote both diversity and the unity we strive for as a continent. The shapes of the patterns echo the countries and continents on a map. Not one pattern dominates or over powers the other suggesting social and political cohesion. The patterns create a map of different cultural groups that are fused together. I attempt to destroy the borders found in maps, therefore making a map without borders. The map shapes are a metaphor for a new landscape that is free from its historical, political and cultural constraints.

Biography My work is influenced by the surrealism, I create a world of different perspectives. As a deaf person, my experience of the world and the hearing community can be seen in the work I make. I create dreamlike landscapes to express my feelings and mood. The spaces I creates can be viewed upside down and right up. In this body of work I have used elements of the classical architecture fused with African landscapes The emoticons adds a contemporary element of how we communicate emotions using technology. I focused on capturing the confusion and communication breakdown I experiences daily. The crow plays an important role in my work because it represent me in these spaces. I am able to interpret noise and emotions by creating busy and strange spaces.

Alex Nkuna Biography Nkuna Alex was born in Giyani, Limpopo Province at Thomo Village where he grew up. He matriculated in 2015 at Hanyani Thomo High school where he was encouraged to peruse an art career by his teacher Mr Mthombeni. His 3rd Year body of work masters the dry point and monotype techniques. He plans to enrol for the 4th Year internship programme in 2019 to further his studies at Artist Proof Studio.
Statement I have made a body of work that is inspired by my memories of my home and place of birth, Giyani, Limpopo. My approach to drawing these landscapes is to accurately render and capture the rural beauty of my home. Each landscape has been sliced up into panels, separated but together in a sequence, this echo’s the figment of my memory of my home. Each panel of the landscape is a different tone and colour that relates to my fragmented memory. In all the landscapes cars are present and are in the process of decaying. The decayed elements are symbolic of the fragility of man in the landscape or nature. I have contrasted the living elements with the decayed objects to represent the idea that memories can either live on or be forgotten.

Statement My body of work examines my identity as a young man living in Johannesburg. A city which was built on the exploitation of the black people of our country. On my daily commute to Joburg, I encounter different periods of colonial and apartheid architecture, these buildings were built by my people, the labourers. These people were not recognized for building the city of gold. Walking in the streets, I look closely at the deconstructed structures of the colonial buildings that have been guttered, with their skeletal structures exposed. The pose of the figure in my work bears the burden and hardships of the workers whom are slouched and drooped from exploitation. The figures are constructed from the deconstructed architectural ruins, to construct a new personal narrative of me trying to understand the mechanics of my past and present moment /history. In some of my works the visual elements are symbolic of the workers. By deconstructing our collective past and history I am able to construct and build my identity.

Statement I have produced a series of works that are directed by my anxious nature, and explore my identity as a young African woman. I have engaged with an experimental process, developing marks that reflect my anxiety and angst. The circular shapes in my work contain abstracted marks and are contrasted by the quiet areas of the paper and the rigid figure. The figurative elements in my work are often static and have no features that are recognisable. The figure moves beyond the racial classifications of identity and focuses on an emotional exploration of identity rather than scientific. This makes the identity I have created universal and free from racial, historical or gender classification.
