William Kentridge Biography

W

illiam Kentridge (born Johannesburg, South Africa, 1955) is internationally acclaimed for his drawings, films, theatre and opera productions.

His method combines drawing, writing, film, performance, music, theatre, and collaborative practices to create works of art that are grounded in politics, science, literature and history, all the while maintaining a space for contradiction and uncertainty. His aesthetics are drawn from the medium of film’s own history, from stop-motion animation to early special effects. Kentridge’s drawing, specifically the dynamism of an erased and redrawn mark, is an integral part of his expanded animation and filmmaking practice, where the meanings of his films are developed during the process of their making. Kentridge’s work has been seen in museums and galleries around the world since the 1990s, including Documenta in Kassel, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Albertina Museum in Vienna, Musée du Louvre in Paris, Whitechapel Gallery in London, Louisiana Museum in Copenhagen, the Reina Sofia museum in Madrid and the Kunstmuseum in Basel. Opera productions include Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Shostakovich’s The Nose, and Alban Berg’s operas Lulu and Wozzeck, and have been seen at opera houses including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, La Scala in Milan, English National Opera in London, Opera de Lyon, Amsterdam opera, and the Salzburg Festival. The Head & the Load, with music by composer Philip Miller and Thuthuka Sibisi and choreography by Gregory Maqoma, interweaves music, dance, projection, shadow-play and sculpture. It premiered at the Tate Turbine Hall in July 2018 and went on to the Park Avenue Amory in New York and the Holland Festival in Amsterdam. Kentridge is the recipient of honorary doctorates from several universities including Yale and the University of London. In 2010, he received the Kyoto Prize. In 2012 he presented the Charles Eliot Norton Lectures at Harvard University. In 2015 he was appointed an Honorary Academician of the Royal Academy in London. In 2017, he received the Princesa de Asturias Award for the arts, and in 2018, the Antonio Feltrinelli International Prize.

Landi Raubenheimer Biography Landi Raubenheimer is an artist and academic working and living in Johannesburg. Originally trained as a painter, she has experimented with resin casting and with papermaking. The latter process has taken place over a period of many years, since a collaboration with the Phumani Paper Mill in Johannesburg in 2011. She has exhibited widely in South Africa, and has taken part in exhibitions curated by Leora Farber, Kim Berman, Ann-Marie Tulley, Jessica Webster, Gordon Froud, Stephan Erasmus, Paul Bayliss and others. She held a solo exhibition at the Oliewenhuis National Art Museum in 2015, entitled After landscape, and is currently completing her PhD in Film Studies and Art History at the University of Grรถningen in the Netherlands and the University of Johannesburg.

Statement In this series of artworks entitled Land I-II and Red earth I-II, I experimented with the map of South Africa and the way in which maps divide land and soil into territories. I used patterns and colours to play with how maps are constructed. It was interesting to me that people immediately recognised the map despite the fact that I was working with a process that abstracted and changed the map. The colours used in these artworks evoke the South African flag: red, black, green, yellow, blue and white, but they also evoke the colours of maps one sees in atlases. I looked at many different kinds of maps when I was conceptualising the work, maps detailing water tables, rivers and rainfall patterns in South Africa. The papermaking process consumes a lot of water, and South Africa has been caught in drought for several years now. When working at the Phumani Paper Mill, I am always struck by how clean and washed everything is, water is dripping everywhere and one is continually touching water or washing screens, utensils and even the pulp itself.

Statement I have always been intrigued by how kids live life, enjoying each moment without worry about tomorrow, living with joy and wonder in all their surroundings, with so much to explore. My titles are African names, mainly from Nguni and Shona languages. In these cultures when a child is born the parents take into consideration the surrounding and/or the situation before giving a name to the new-born. The screenprints feature a light grey aquatex ink, graphite powder with clear base, watercolour with clear base and pigment with clear base.

Lindokuhle Zwane Biography Lindokuhle Zwane was born in 1992 in Newcastle, South Africa. He works predominantly in paintings and charcoal drawings as well as printmaking mediums. He studied printmaking at Artist Proof Studio, where he also worked as a drawing facilitator for 3 years. In 2017 Zwane won an award in one of the country prestigious art competition the Thami Mnyele Fine Arts Awards, he took the 2nd prize (the Ekurhuleni prize). Another achievement for Zwane was winning a painting merit award in the 2019 Thami Mnyele Arts Award.

Statement My overall body of work focuses on feelings of nostalgia and the process of catharsis. I am interested in everyday life and where it is headed, but also in how the past inextricably weaves itself into the present. The memory and influence of the past, and the reality of the present often pose deep psychological challenges that I express through the work. The challenges come from the difficulty of being able to accept the past and acknowledge the present, particularly the chasm that can exist between those two realities. A constant inspiration to me comes from witnessing the resilience that people demonstrate in their daily lives, despite their circumstances. My process involves observing and documenting these moments through photography. I draw inspiration from the emotions I experience when the lens captures a second in time. I use the photographs as my inspiration. They vary from old to new photographs, which I take myself, come from family albums or have been given to me by friends and associates. Each photo evokes a story for me, and I use them individually or collectively to recreate and recompose a narrative I focus mainly on the rural and township life in which I grew up. My experience of these perspectives and realities are important to me when recreating the artwork through painting, drawing or printmaking mediums. These recreated moments are personal, yet universal in that we are all connected and have dreams and desires that are sometimes never met. I am continually challenged to make empowering choices in my life as opposed to remaining paralyzed by an unwillingness to accept past and the present. It is this space of vulnerability and loss that I locate my truest work

Sifiso Temba Biography Sifiso Temba was born in 1989 and currently lives in Vosloorus, Gauteng. He is an artist and printmaker that uses a variety of mediums including; charcoal, pencil, chalk, pastel, ink and watercolour. Temba’s artworks explore issues surrounding crime and politics in South Africa. He completed a 3 year Professional Development Programme at Artist Proof Studio in 2015 followed by an internship facilitating 3rd years in conceptual development. He is currently working as an independent artist working closely with Alphabet Zoo.

Statement My work focuses on the issue of crime in South Africa. I look at the complexity of our current social landscape as high levels of violent crime, murder, rape and theft shows void of hope in our country. I explore the point of confrontation and consequences of violent behaviour. I create scenarios from personal and local references that contribute to the reading of this chaotic issue. I use animals as representation of the perceived perpetrators in the re-enactment of these current events. I use expressive lines in order to emphasize the density and intensity of this sensitive subject matter connected. My artworks are attempts to find solutions to this problematic matter that’s affecting so many lives.

Themba Khumalo Biography Themba Benedict Khumalo was born on the 16 February 1987 in Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa. He graduated from Artist Proof Studio in printmaking, where he obtained a Design Foundation Certificate. He went on to do a professional printmaking development course under the sponsorship of Pinpoint One, at Artist Proof Studio in 2009 where he was an intern in the silkscreen unit and special project team. Khumalo is interested in exploring different mediums, such as charcoal drawings and painting. He has been involved in number of group exhibitions, commissions and special projects, such as painting murals in the Eastern Cape and being invited to exhibit in a group show at Isolate del Cinema festival in Rome, Italy. He has exhibited widely and been on various residencies internationally since 2016. Khumalo works as an independent artist. Statement Themba khumalo’s work reflects the social, political and spiritual landscape in current South Africa and the understanding of land as identity. Using current news headlines as an entry into some of the injustice the landscape observes, these meaning are made visible through the nuances expressed in the drawings, painting with coffee to mimic the earth and soil tones and use of vernacular titles. With the attempt to saturate the land, the artist looks at a piece of land measured through the size of the drawings. These renditions portray pieces of land as witnesses to the dispossession, illegal occupation as protest, loss of hope and yet through the artist depicts land as refugee, a space faith and healing recognising local expression of faith, loss and hope often used in transit between spaces.

Nathi Ndlandla Biography Nathi Ndlandla was born 1979 Alexandra Township. Was raised by a single parent and studied in Alex until completing his matric at East Bank high school. He lived with his mother, aunt, five cousin and two uncles under one shelter. He survived through the support of the community, friends and teachers who mentored him. As his school did not have art as a subject, he created his own art projects, wire cars and clay sculptures. After a year at home with no financial support to study further, he found out about Artist Proof Studio. Here he was introduced to printmaking and after a year he was sponsored by Pin Point One Solutions. He graduated after three years as a professional printmaker. Soon after graduating his mother passed away. He later worked at Phumani Paper, a research development unit of University Of Johannesburg researching and developing of Archival Hand-Made Paper for printmaking as well as training and development in the community. He worked as an apprentice for Tim Foulds and currently works as a master printmaker in the Artist Proof Studio Pro-Shop. He was awarded an Ampersand Fellowship to New York in 2018 and he still continues to collaborate with various artists.

Statement The work that I am currently working on reflects on the political and social challenges, sometimes the positive sides we don’t usually look at. At many times in this situation that our country is facing, I depict what is happening through my work using the community environment and the mood that tells what positive things that we are not seeing in our community. Talent, businesses and opportunities we find in our surroundings at point, are the fruits that we have but don’t recognise that they are hidden in our gardens. I believe that if we as people are more supportive towards each other we can be able to harvest fruitfully out of our hardships.

Mandla Mavengere Biography Mandlenkosi Mavengere b. (1992) in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe is a South African based artist who works predominantly in printing and painting. He enrolled at Artist Proof Studio to study printmaking and completed the three year course in professional printmaking. During his internship at APS, he curated an exhibition hosted by Strauss & Co. Mavengere also gained a one year internship with the William Kentridge Studio. The mentorship by William Kentridge significantly developed his creativity skills from etchings, into sculpturing and prominent linocut banknotes exploring themes consistent with his Migration Concept. His work has featured on numerous platforms namely, Black Like Us Exhibition (Parkhurst) and Art Investment in Parkhurst, 2015 IT-Web Calendar Brainstorm, Julie Miller Art Investments, Henry George Gallery, Turbine Art Fair, Absa Gallery, Artist Proof Studio, MM-Art-house, The Melrose Gallery, Cherie De Villiers Gallery, Strauss & Co (auction) and his work was exhibited at the 2018 AKAA Art Fair in Paris with Absolut Art Gallery. His themed “Painting On Money” artworks have featured at the Paris Art Fair. Mavengere’s work also features in collections such as the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and Minerals Council South Africa. He currently runs his own studio as a production and collaborative space based at the Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Statement My artworks bring into conversation and discussion, the issues of migration and labour relations in our contemporary society. I migrated from Zimbabwe to South Africa crossing borders, had my identity checked at immigrations, and I arrived to fitin, in a multi-racial country. My banknote artworks (significantly etchings and linocuts) are a framework within which one can observe the issues of migration with relevance to socio-economic divergence and convergence. The directional lines in the banknotes depict the scatterings of people and population displacement. The repetition of patterns symbolize the circumstantial economic system embedded to the stereotyped migrants. The linocut banknotes printed onto fabric (canvas) emphasize the constructed travels of the population in search for income and better life. The figures and portraits (with head gear) painted on money are economically fabricated identities who are fitting into new homelands of occupation versus their homes of origin.
