Custodians of tradition from Giyani Village (Limpopo) meet the energised and politicised urban youth of Alex township. Page 104, Rebooted: Unfolding Histories, is a dialogue of narratives set up by Justice Mathonsi and Sipho Gwala and Siď€ so Gumede (of Gom.art Collective) in Alex. These narratives are expressed through a series of relief prints energised with colour. Throughout the exhibition the viewer is struck by the quietness and often stoic resonance of the traditional elders (Mathonsi's work) which is sharply contrasted by the energy and noise captured in Gwala and Gumede's scenes of urban youth on the streets of Alex. The exhibition promises to excite while at the same time inspire and evoke memories of people and places from our own pasts and present experiences skilfully captured by the artists.

Siso Gumede Artist Biography Siso Gumede was born in 1987 at Alexandra Township. Gumede completed his high school education in East Bank High School. He obtained his 3 year certicate at the Artist Proof Studio, Silkscreen certicate at Creative Inner City Project as well as a certicate for participating in a photography workshop for 1 month hosted by I see Africa sponsored by Nikon.

Artist Statement South African schools have become violence zones due to the rise of drugs, crime and lack of resources (especially in our township areas). We need education, not police to monitor our schools for weapons and crime. I strongly believe that books are weapons to succeed and overcome obstacles in life. Unequal resources like computer labs, lack of textbooks and creative facilities contribute to this rating. Linocut allows me to express the experiences that we face in the community, due to the process that is required to create lino plate. The material of linolium is a metaphor for skin. I use colour to evoke both joy and sadness that we experience inside our schools and community.

Justice Mathonsi Artist Biography Mathonsi was born in 1987 in Soweto. He moved to the Venda in 1990 to Ribugwani in the Limpopo. He completed his high school education in Akani High School. In 2011 he moved to Johannesburg and enrolled at Intec Collage to study Architecture. In 2012 Mathonsi enrolled at the Artist Proof Studio to study printmaking. He has specialised in lino reduction. He plans to pursue a career as an artist and print maker.

Artist Statement My body of work pays tribute and homage to the many women who raised me. I grew up in a rural area called Ribugwani in Limpopo. My parents were not present in my life, and I was raised by the older women in my community who became my grandmothers. Under their guidance they taught me about Tsonga values and culture and how to be a Man. The body of work consists of large scale portraits of these individual women to emphasise their importance in my life and within the community. My portraits are very detailed and show the elements of time, age, history and knowledge evident in the lines of their faces. The large portraits confront the viewer to acknowledge the huge role these women play in raising children, which is often not recognised in our society. They are humble women elevated to an important status through my mark making and the pattern pays homage to my Tsonga roots. I see this body of work as a record of my family tree.

Sipho Gwala Artist Biography Sipho Charles Gwala was born in Tembisa Hospital and grew up in Alexandra Township. Gwala completed his high school education in Northview High School in 2003. He is a graduate of the National Diploma from the University of Johannesburg, Visual Arts Department (2010). He also obtained a Bachelor of the Arts with Honours Degree, Digital Arts in 2013 and in 2017 a Leadership and Management Advancement (Cathsseta) course from University of the Witwatersrands.

Artist Statement I make art to document our history. I grew up in Alexandra, a township. Art is an interesting way of documenting or telling stories. My theme explores at how music has and is playing a role in our lives. I also add platonic shapes to the artworks because there is a relationship between alchemy, Platonism and modern psychology. I take photographs in and around Alexandra and I use them as reference when making art. In 2012 when I had a ceremony to acknowledge my ancestors, my friends where dancing to traditional Zulu music. I use Lino as a medium because of how one has to scoop and scratch the lino to get the desired image. My large charcoal drawings are drawn by transferring the image on to paper using a projector to get the proportions right and this is how I also draw the images on the lino. I then cut out gures using a knife to get the different colors because I put the image together like a puzzle when printing. My works reect the time and place that I'm at when I take a photo. My surroundings inuence me and I feel that Alexandra has a lot of untold stories from the past. Alex is celebrating 105 years this year with a lot of history.
