Cromwell Ngobeni cromwellngobeni
”Ku tlula ka mhala ku letela n’wana wale ndzeni” is a Tsonga idiomatic phrase that means that as the impala jumps it teaches the child inside to leap as well, the phrase also suggests that whatever you do will be copied by the young ones. “When I was a child I was continuously being bullied. In order to protect myself, my mother taught me how to fight. Throughout my life, fighting became a huge part of who I was and it turned me into someone who was unable to control my emotions without resorting to violence. I draw on these experiences and use this body of work as a process of catharsis in reassessing the way I was raised as minor. I believe that whatever we do as adults, will be repeated by our children. I am trying to change this cycle through this body of work. I use pen on paper, charcoal, ink, watercolour and etching to communicate my emotions. Through self-portraiture I capture different phases of my emotions and transfer these images onto etching plates. I also use my body in various poses and gestures that display my tangled emotions. The line work used to create aspects of my body image when caught in conflict. The medium of etching expresses and reflects the physical degree of my emotions on steel which is transferred onto paper. These tangled lines are a metaphor for the inner turmoil of my emotions. As I developed the body of work over the year, the pose and gesture of my body and face became more passive and less aggressive. The making of this work was a cathartic process.

I have been always intrigued by how kids live life, enjoying each moment without worry about tomorrow, living with joy and wonder for all the things that around them, with so much to explore. My titles are African names, mainly from Nguni and Shona languages. In these cultures when a child is born our parents take into consideration the surrounding and/or the situation before giving a name to a newborn.

Donald Makola
The subject of my work is family. In this body of work I am specifically looking at my father’s family and the presence of the father figure as head of the family. My father was a good, caring and loving father. He was responsible and worried about the future of his children. He was very strict and wanted us to become better people in life. He worked hard to assist us in any way that he could. In my images I use objects and tools as metaphors to describe the hard work and encouragement he provided us. Most of the objects and tools I chose are used in the home – specifically the yard. I often place the subject on gravel road or pavements. The gravel represents the rural area and the pavements are the urban environment. I specialise in intaglio techniques. I like the variation of textures and tones you can get with intaglio etching. I also think that it provokes the idea of memory. My images are inspired by Gerard Sekoto, particularly the image titled; ‘Proud Father’. My work is a tribute to my parents. I hope that it is inspirational to other fathers out there to be loving and responsible. I aim not to forget how I was raised and the love that I grew up in.

Trees are a metaphor for families around the communities. I feel that a tree is a good metaphor to represent life, for instance, when you teach someone it’s like planting a tree and when it grows, it bears fruits, this is a sign of gaining knowledge and being productive. The roots represent a time frame of where the person is coming from, then the stem and the branches represent growth and success. The community uses trees for shade and some members solve community problems under the tree. I want my artworks to inspire people, for them to relate and change the world.

My work is influenced by the Surrealism. I create a world of different perspectives. As a deaf person, my experience of the world and the hearing community can be seen in the work I make. I create dreamlike landscapes to express my feelings and mood. The spaces I creates can be viewed upside down and right up. In this body of work I have used elements of classical architecture fused with African landscapes. The emoticons adds a contemporary element of how we communicate emotions using technology. I focus on capturing the confusion and communication breakdown I experiences daily. The crow plays an important role in my work because it represent me in these spaces. I am able to interpret noise and emotions by creating busy and strange spaces.

Thandiwe Khumalo thandiwe_key
My body of work is directed by childhood memories and the absence of a bond and relationship with my mother. In my works, I have attempted to recreate my own memories. I establish a connection with my mother by reassembling family photographs of us together on the same page. I have included embossed objects that are personal. I have left a physical imprint on the paper as evidence of these ‘new memories’. The print medium of photo lithography allows me to reproduce original family photographs and rearrange them into new photographic images. The element of repetition has decorative and feminine qualities, similar to fabric patterns found in the home. These elements are included in the works to try to make ‘real’ something that was never there. This enables me to be in control of my memories. This is my attempt to connect with my mother and console myself.

My artwork examines my identity, environment and elements of architecture to construct a new narrative that observes my daily commute from home to the city of Johannesburg , walking in the streets of Johannesburg , I look closely to the deconstructed structures of the colonial building that have been guttered , with their skeletal structures exposed and i infuse them with the portraits .I focus on the portraits to show the expression of the workers , architects and African people to place and showcase them in a position that makes the viewer engage with them using their posture or facial expressions. I use contour lines inspired by our finger prints an inversely use them on the portrait to play with the idea of identity and to show my constant struggle to develop my identity and the where I come from. The use of architecture in my work explores the exterior communication of humans and structures and I use that as a metaphor to express certain emotions and the sub-conscious dialogue that happens on the daily and by deconstructing our collective past I am able to construct and build my own identity. My drawn marks are geo-metric , technical and mechanical to show the relationship the portraits have with the environment \ cold structures of the buildings .

My works are self-reflective, an inner dialogue with myself. I use my body in the images as a way to explore the idea of visibility and invisibility. Body language enables the feelings and meaning to come forward. The work seeks to communicate a feeling of being visible and also hiding away in the shadows of a dominant heterosexual world. Being queer, black and female in South Africa can be challenging as it is still difficult to live openly without fear or judgement. The texture reflects an interwoven journey of self-discovery and acceptance while the body hides from the viewer to counteract the idea of visibility.

My body of work pays tribute and homage to the many women who raised me. I grew up in a rural area called Ribugwani in Limpopo. My parents were not present in my life, and I was raised by the older woman in my community who became my grandmothers. Under their guidance they taught me about Tsonga values and culture and how to be a man. The body of work consists of large-scale portraits of these individual women to emphasise their importance in my life and within the community. My portraits are very detailed and show the elements of time, age, history and knowledge evident in the lines of their faces. The large portraits confront the viewer to acknowledge the huge role these woman play in raising children, which is often not recognised in our society. They are humble woman elevated to an important status through my markmaking and the pattern which pays homage to my Tsonga roots. I see this body of work as a record of my family tree.

My work is based on Guidelines, the search for focus which enhances growth, development and personal belief. I am devoted to the cause of travelling as it is a link to a place, the history and its experience personnel. My work values moral fibres that help form an opinion regarding existence. I use the colorful misty atmosphere as a space where I think, plan and dream, where else I use maps as symbols for connection, development, guidance and planned fragments of existence. The brown color, rust and burned paper symbolizes my past experience and the red linear color symbolizes the sweeter and bitter journey I take on daily basis.

Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he/she grows up. This is a very profound statement made by the internationally renowned Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso. This statement has much resonance with my art, especially in this body of work. Children’s art is not confined by any formalities. Therefore, through my work I retrace and reflect on my childhood journey which contributed significantly to my career and profession as an artist and art educator. It is not by mistake that I have found myself as a professional artist today; rather it was some creative talent that I was born with. Growing up as a child I used to find lots of fascination in craft and arts. I grew up using walls sand at home as a canvas where I expressed myself and my artistic talent without even knowing it. I remember as a young boy of about six or seven years being reprimanded for drawing on the walls with charcoal made from firewood, chalks and also scratching with wires and sticks to create images and text, from both my imagination and what I was taught at school. I displayed passion and a skill for drawing from an early age and my primary school teacher was impressed by my talent. My teacher encouraged me to take art seriously by giving me an opportunity to do small commissioned work such as portraits, learning aids, illustrations and decorating book covers for my class mates. I remember as a little boy, my peers used to ask me to create toy wire-cars for them to play with, sometimes in exchange for money. This really unleashed my potential as an aspiring artist! However, growing up in a rural area in Limpopo was a challenge as there is so little awareness that someone can make a living out of art.

I am from Mozambique and my work is inspired by the sons who are left behind when their fathers leave home in search of work to earn money for their families. The young men that are left behind take on the roles of fathers at home. Both the sons and fathers face difficulties apart from each other and their families. My etchings and dry points pay homage to these young men and fathers who are separated and isolated from each other.

“Making lines and shapes have always been my passion. From an early age I drew wherever I could – including the walls! The expressiveness of a simple line or group of lines making a statement is fascinating to me. The fairly recent discovery of mono print making, through Elaine Hirchowitz at the APS, has been really exciting and I have become enthralled by the immediacy and unpredictable nature of print making; some of which can be controlled but most of which is a delightful surprise. As I lean further into the process I am enjoying where it is taking me as an artist. The charm of discovering the effects of using random elements to create form and using new materials and substances with which to experiment is the most joy I have experienced in art for a long time. I watch, almost as a bystander, with curiosity as my deepening concern for the planet and wildlife along with an archetypal overlaying of the feminine/mothering/wild presses forward in my work. I stand in awe at the mystery of the process!

I have approached my body of work as a film director. From the film-documentary, I selected stills as scenes to tell a narrative that contains hidden secrets. Each frame gives the viewer a setting to a narrative that is not clear. The spaces focus on an event that happened and have an element of truth. My works are a reflection of events that took place in my home that altered my physical and mental space. I present the viewer with a narrative of emptiness with a few obvious clues to the story. The images provide scenarios that the viewer can interpret for themselves. I have juxtaposed the photographic images with drawn images to emphasise the contrast between the documentation and the ‘created’ mark. The titles of the work and my editing of my personal story will direct the viewer to their own narrative and interpretation of my work.

In my body of work I explore the vulnerability of the masculine figure. I have used my own body as a source of reference in order to interrogate my own identity. The male figure in my works can be found in different foetal positions. This passive position challenges the stereotypical patriarchal role of the masculinity I experience in society. I explore a range of atmospheric surfaces that interact with the passive figure. These emotive surfaces create a dialogue with the figure that at times create a contrast between the two. It is this relationship that creates a dream like world and escape from reality and conforming to the social construct of masculinity.

In my work I explore the issue of trying to adapt or blend in to new environments or conditions. I migrated from Zimbabwe to South Africa in order to get economic stability, on my arrival I had to adapt to a new life. Fitting into new environments requires a flexible character that can be able to adjust and blend in. I use hands and lines to compare and try to blend two different qualities which are organic and inorganic. In my work I regard hands as multifunctional and use them to interpret a character of an individual in conjunction with lines that serve as my symbol for the environment. Looking at the fact that lines are the basic element of design and that architectural designs are constructed from them.

Tony Nkotsi
Tony Nkotsi was born in 1955 in the Western Township of Johannesburg. During his schooling years he would spend any money that his mother gave to him on art materials and spent his Saturdays at informal art classes in Orlando, Soweto. Here he was exposed to contemporary South African art and was particularly impressed by a large drawing by Dumile Feni. His involvement in the student uprisings of 1976 saw him being detained. On his release he attended art classes at the Mofolo Art Centre where he met Dumisani Mabaso and Gordon Gabashane who had recently graduated from Rorkes Drift. Inspired by these men, Nkotsi studied at the Rorkes Drift Art Centre for three years from 1980 to 1982, the year that the Art Centre closed down.

Currently I am working on exploring how to represent the female figure in my work by looking at my collection of objects that represent the female form in various narratives. The pose, physical features, material and colour of the objects have influenced the works. I have developed a female character that has evolved from being passive and submissive into an aggressive and powerful figure over a number of works. She wears make up that is painterly and heavily applied on her lashes, eyes and lips. The medium of paint /ink has similar material qualities to make up. The fluidity of the ink has produced an abstract, undefined female figure that transforms the female form from sweet to nightmarish or monstrous. Her physical features resemble a combination of the objects in my collection which are African fetish figures, curios and ceramic ornaments.

In my body of work I confront my depression that is caused by genetic and social constraints. I am a young South African man and the eldest son in my family. This comes with high expectations and responsibilities of following my father’s footsteps. Making this body of work has been a therapeutic and a cathartic process. It has also allowed me to work on reaching my personal goals as an artist. I have used colour and expressive marks to express my inner feelings .This body of work documents the chronological phases of moods and events that occurred in my life.

Something’s fishy 2019 is new body of work that consists of a variety of different scales of prints, in which I explore a variety of different printmaking techniques including lino cut and monotype. Through the work I try to visualise the vulnerability of the subconscious mind using different studies of predator deep-sea fish. The work consists of representations of different predator fish, which may be found in the darkest corners of the ocean’s depths. With the use of symbolism, my work is an attempt to respond to the social instabilities of violence in South Africa. This topic is something which I am a strong advocate for and have dedicated many series of artworks to the campaign against violence towards women. This body of work, however, has shifted away from my investigation of the female form as a landscape of abuse and has focused on the small predators of the deep, dark ocean. The deep-sea fish live in an environment far below the sunlit surface waters of the ocean. This environment, much like the South African landscape, can be considered very hostile. The deep-sea fish, therefore, have had to evolve various adaptions in order to survive. One such example that exists in nature is that of the deep-sea angler fish, which is renowned for the luminescent organ atop its head, known as the esca. It has been hypothesized that this organ is useful for luring in prey with its bright light, while serving the dual purpose of attracting the attention of prospective mates. On a personal note; this work represents my attempt to draw parallels between the deepest darkest deep sea with that of a vulnerable mind-set.

We are accustomed to seeing portraits of mothers with child but it is very rare to see a father and son portrait. My work deals with the loss of my son. The imagery in my prints has sacrificial and religious connotations. I have included personal objects that represent the bond between me and my son - the rope that binds us together and the necklace. In my later portraits, the facial features of my son and I disappear as I move on into the world as a man who once had a son.

Lebohang Sithole lebohangsithole
In my artwork, I explore two main experiences that have had a significant impact on who I am. I was named after my grandfather who was called Mfana Enoch Sithole. I am told that he was a musician and a prophet. I was born the same day he died. Almost everything that my grandfather did during his lifetime is closely paralleled with the things that I do in my life. The inspiration for my work is the journey travelled by my grandfather who was the lead singer and organist for the Amajembe Jazz Band. When I visit my grandfather’s house I get the feeling I have lived there, when I touch his instruments, I feel I have played them, when I look at his photograph, I see myself. Looking at my grandfather’s strength and belief in what he was, has encouraged me as an Artist. I believe that one person can inherit a something special from a family member and be recognized as that person. My work is dedicated to Him. I also explore images of children. In every family, country and race that a child is born into, the environment influences the development of that child and determines who they become. Children are a symbol of growth resulting in a defining perspective of ‘I am what I am because I am determined by the way I have grown up’.

David Forbes For me, fine art has become an elite mystery permeated with pretentious language and, often, poor craftsmanship. I respond to images in a visceral way, and if a work doesn’t “speak” to me, I move past it. I have been making images my entire life, as a child, at school, and began to make images seriously at university, where I taught myself 35mm photography and writing. I became a journalist, a wordsmith and layout artist, but eventually discovered filmmaking in 1983. With more than 35 years’ experience in making images, I have recently been able to bring my drawing, imagination, experience and photography together to create images that I feel speak directly to our place in the world. My work is highly political. It speaks to aspects of society that people prefer to ignore, such as the betrayal of the struggle, the authoritarian way the State deals with the People, and global imbalances and injustices forced upon us by economic and cultural imperialism and colonialism. For me, art is a reminder that we must never forget, we must never stop creating, and we must never stop imagining. Our future depends upon it.

Nathi Ndlandla
Nathi Ndlandla was born 1979 Alexandra Township. Was raised by a single parent and studied in Alex until completing his matric at East Bank high school. He lived with his mother, aunt, five cousin and two uncles under one shelter. He survived through the support of the community, friends and teachers who mentored him. As his school did not have art as a subject, he created his own art projects, wire cars and clay sculptures. After a year at home with no financial support to study further, he found out about Artist Proof Studio. Here he was introduced to printmaking and after a year he was sponsored by Pin Point One Solutions. He graduated after three years as a professional printmaker. Soon after graduating his mother passed away. He later worked at Phumani Paper, a research development unit of University Of Johannesburg researching and developing of Archival Hand-Made Paper for printmaking as well as training and development in the community. He worked as an apprentice for Tim Foulds and currently works as a master printmaker in the Artist Proof Studio Pro-Shop. He was awarded an Ampersand Fellowship to New York in 2018.

Fleur De Blondt fleurdebondt
de Bondt born in 1989 is an autodidactic artist. Since her emergence into the art scene in 2013, she has shown work at galleries including The Art Room, Constitution Hill, Jo Anke, ABSA Gallery, Hazard, KKNK and the Turbine and Joburg Art Fairs. She specialises in drawing and printmaking; combining drawing (using mixed media) with lino tiles to create mono-type prints. Her work is concept and process driven with memory which is a recurring theme of exploration. She currently makes work at assemblage in Newtown. What drives me as an artist is my desire to want to make people to do two things: look closer and think. I am fascinated by the ‘weather’ of the mind. My current work is stimulated by the malleable nature of experiential long term memory - our autobiographical memories - where upon recall, memory strengthening, and the formation of new associations fuse. I’ve explored this by not only interrogating my own memory but also through a process of documenting other people’s personal history.

Bokang Mankoe bokangmankoe
Bokang Mankoe was born in 1992 in Tembisa, Johannesburg. Mankoe`s concept centres on the ‘construction’ of himself as a ‘perfect’ man. The notion of ‘fitting in’ and using the Golden Ratio as a metaphor of Western Idealism and at the same time being a young Black South African. After the death of his father he was left with responsibilities as the first born and oldest of his siblings. Bokang Mankoe`s work is about the construction of an Ideal. He references the Golden Ratio and the Geometric Lines that come with it. The ratio was developed by Michael Maestlini in 1597, based on standards of what a ‘perfect human face’ should look like. For Mankoe, the building up of himself into the perfect image led to birth of his alter-ego “Tau”.

Carla Frank thulilubisi
My artmaking is a process of finding peace. Although I am a jewelry maker by profession once I began to make art more consciously, a sense of wonder began to grow in me as I became aware of aspects in the natural landscape in our urban environment. Living in Johannesburg, considered a particularly harsh environment, I was surprised to find patches of beauty. I felt I could no longer ignore the call to make art. I fell in love with printmaking after I did an etching course at Artist Proof Studio and was also introduced to the more painterly monotype technique which suited my wish to create skyscapes. Working in this medium encouraged me to loosen up. I later moved to Chocolate Ink Studio where my imagery shifted to include more trees and landscapes. A fascination of mine relates to the Buddhist idea of multiple perspectives. The monotype and cyanotype techniques results in both positive and ghost prints, has allowed an exploration into both light and dark – different views of the world.
