SHssion Es impre APS has a long history of predominantly male professional printmakers. She Impressions is an all-women show and is a second insert to She Impressions in 2017. This year, works by female artists from different backgrounds and experiences come together through printmaking. The artists participating on the show are jewellers, stylists, painters, sculptors, teachers and administrators who have brought in their specialties and created their impressions using the print medium in an exciting and vibrant way. Themes of identity, beauty, sexuality, vulnerability and memory are confronted through alternative and combination-technique prints that challenge notions of femininity and identity.
MAMORENA MALAKOANE ARTIST STATEMENT I have approached my body of work as a film director. From the film-documentary, I selected stills as scenes to tell a narrative that contains hidden secrets. Each frame gives the viewer a setting to a narrative that is not clear. The spaces focus on an event that happened and have an element of truth. My works are a reflection of events that took place in my home that altered my physical and mental space. I present the viewer with a narrative of emptiness with a few obvious clues to the story. The images provide scenarios that the viewer can interpret for themselves. I have juxtaposed the photographic images with drawn images to emphasise the contrast between the documentation and the ‘created’ mark. The titles of the work and my editing of my personal story will direct the viewer to their own narrative and interpretation of my work.

CARLA FRANK ARTIST STATEMENT My artmaking is a process of finding peace. Although I am a jewelry maker by profession once I began to make art more consciously, a sense of wonder began to grow in me as I became aware of aspects in the natural landscape in our urban environment. Living in Johannesburg, considered a particularly harsh environment, I was surprised to find patches of beauty. I felt I could no longer ignore the call to make art. I fell in love with printmaking after I did an etching course at Artist Proof Studio and was also introduced to the more painterly monotype technique which suited my wish to create skyscapes. Working in this medium encouraged me to loosen up. I later moved to Chocolate Ink Studio where my imagery shifted to include more trees and landscapes. A fascination of mine relates to the Buddhist idea of multiple perspectives. The monotype and cyanotype techniques results in both positive and ghost prints, has allowed an exploration into both light and dark – different views of the world.

THANDIWE KHUMALO ARTIST STATEMENT The work portrays a newly found consciousness of a contrived identity formed during my childhood. The images I make explore the difficulties I have in perceiving my own identity. Love, dependency, connection, consideration, forgiveness and strength became prevalent themes as I begin to recognize who I am in the process of becoming while reflecting on memories of my relationship with my mother as a child.

ILSE PAHL ARTIST STATEMENT Currently I am working on exploring how to represent the female figure in my work by looking at my collection of objects that represent the female form in various narratives. The pose, physical features, material and colour of the objects have influenced the works. I have developed a female character that has evolved from being passive and submissive into an aggressive and powerful figure over a number of works. She wears make up that is painterly and heavily applied on her lashes, eyes and lips. The medium of paint /ink has similar material qualities to make up. The fluidity of the ink has produced an abstract, undefined female figure that transforms the female form from sweet to nightmarish or monstrous. Her physical features resemble a combination of the objects in my collection which are African fetish figures, curios and ceramic ornaments.

RENEILWE MATHIBE ARTIST STATEMENT My works are self-reflective, an inner dialogue with myself. I use my body in the images as a way to explore the idea of visibility and invisibility. Body language enables the feelings and meaning to come forward. The work seeks to communicate a feeling of being visible and also hiding away in the shadows of a dominant heterosexual world. Being queer, black and female in South Africa can be challenging as it is still difficult to live openly without fear or judgement. The texture reflects an interwoven journey of self-discovery and acceptance while the body hides from the viewer to counteract the idea of visibility.

FLEUR DE BONDT ARTIST STATEMENT What drives me as an artist is my desire to want to make people to do two things: look closer and think. I am fascinated by the ‘weather’ of the mind. My current work is stimulated by the malleable nature of experiential long term memory - our autobiographical memories - where upon recall, memory strengthening, and the formation of new associations fuse. I’ve explored this by not only interrogating my own memory but also through a process of documenting other people’s personal history.

LOUISE WIERENGA ARTIST STATEMENT The work is inspired by a photograph of my late friend, Sandra Ferreira. I am interested in life stories, each person has a mark to make. I think we could learn so much from each other. Artwork was done under the mentorship of Mario Soares from Mozambique. Lucas Nkgweng helped with printing the proofs, adding the chine collĂŠ. The editions will be printed by Pontsho Sikhosana, our master printer.

BETH MCALPINE ARTIST STATEMENT Making lines and shapes has always been my passion. From an early age I drew wherever I could - even on the walls! The expressiveness of a simple line or group of lines making a statement is always what I am after. The fairly recent discovery of monotype prints through Elaine Hirchowitz at the APS has been really exciting and I am leaning in to where it will take me as an artist. The joy of discovering materials which when they come together create the unexpected in many cases are a joyful expression for me. The combination of ink and line sustain and source me.

LEBOHANG MOTAUNG ARTIST STATEMENT I am a printmaker and hairstylist. Plaiting hair has always been part of my life. Over the years this skill has developed from a means of earning income to an area of intense research and art practice. I am fascinated by the arrangements, patterns, colour and texture of African hair as interesting subject matter to explore. In my recent work, I focuses on the activity and process of ‘doing’ hair. Imagery of hybrid hairstyles are metaphors of the subconscious and conscious relationships between myself and my clients. In my work, I use a wide range of mediums from linocut, etching, paper making and synthetic hair on paper. With my etchings I present the timeous and laborious process that I go through when plaiting hair. In my recent work, I makes portraits using hair. Hair can be a symbol of one’s identity it has the power to dictate how a person is seen. I use both human hair and synthetic hair to portray my subject matter.

CHRISEL VD MERWE ARTIST STATEMENT Surfaces within the city are what interest me most. I draw inspiration from textures and colours found in the decay of structures, from cryptic messages in torn and faded posters, from graffiti and the constant flux of the city. I am fascinated by layers of hidden histories, secrets that the city holds in the walls of its deteriorating buildings, on its concrete floors and underneath the many bridges that capture the marks that people leave daily. In this fluent urban context, renewal and erosion are the concurrent themes in my prints and paintings. My process involves both creation and destruction. Architectus Konstruksie i and ii form part of a larger series of prints. These prints are created on found metal sheets that I worked on at different construction sites in and around the city of Johannesburg. I have limited control over the processes the plates are exposed to on the construction site. By placing them in certain areas on the construction site I allow the plates to spontaneously capture the activities on site. The warped plate is transformed into a memory of the city’s construction at that specific time and place. It become s its own form of documenting the city’s history. Architectus
