Introduction by Jeff Whiting President & Founder, Artists for Conservation into a major international cultural happening. Indeed, we’re proud to support the emergence of yet another cultural event – the Vancouver International Bird Festival – as an exciting legacy outcome of this cooperation, for the host city of Vancouver. For this banner year, we envisioned an ambitious collaborative mural project titled “Silent Skies” that would bring over 150 artists together to depict the world’s 678 endangered species of birds. Every fall since 2008 has been a special time, when artists from around the globe convene at Artists for Conservation’s exhibit premiere, to share their knowledge, passion, expertise and camaraderie. Each brings a unique perspective through their paintings and sculptures, and a deep understanding and reverence for the subjects they portray. These artists are a part of a very special international AFC community that has grown over nearly two decades and spanning almost 30 countries. The AFC Festival offers an unparalleled chance for the public to meet these talented and dedicated artists in a unique forum of natural beauty, education and creativity. In 2018, we’re proud to have partnered with the oldest and most important event in bird studies – the 27th International Ornithological Congress. This year’s event is not just exciting in terms of its scope, but in terms of the platform of cooperation between science and culture. AFC’s role this year is helping to transform and cross-pollinate a largely academic event

There is an unhealthy and growing disconnect in society, away from the natural world that supports us. The Artists for Conservation Festival represents a cultural movement, and the embodiment of applied art – that is, art in action to change the world. It’s our responsibility as artists, to use our talents and convictions to inspire the public and youth of tomorrow, to take action to protect what remains of this planet’s natural wonders. Each painting or sculpture has an important conservation story each artist is eager to share. The AFC Festival is a “gathering of the clans” among artists. A heartfelt thank you to the artists, volunteers, sponsors, musicians, patrons, and our partners at the IOCongress2018 and Vancouver International Bird Festival. Enjoy your time at this important event.

Silent Skies Mural Project “Silent Skies” is an international collaborative super-mural mosaic featuring all 678 endangered species of birds of the world. The over 100-ft installation will be unveiled at the 27th International Ornithological Congress - to stand as a poignant message for the public, and a symbol of international collaboration between the arts and sciences. The 678 endangered species were based upon classification on the most recent IUCN Red List. Each is represented by an 8-inch-square original artwork. A limited edition of each of the species is being reproduced as high quality canvas giclee prints. These are now available for

sale, with a large portion of proceeds supporting bird conservation. The originals will tour internationally through 2022. An important additional program created in parallel with the mural is the Silent Skies STUDENT Mural Project – engaging students from grades 3 to 7 to learn about endangered bird species, conservation concepts and to create mural artwork of their own. AFC developed a series of downloadable education packages. Teachers were encouraged to submit and add their students’ artwork to a live Virtual Mural for public viewing. A selection of the top student mural creations is displayed alongside the professional mural.

AFC Festival Circle of Patrons AFC recognizes the following artists who have made generous financial contributions to support the annual AFC Festival.

Cher Anderson | AFC Festival Ambassador “My need to be a part of an organization that provides support in conserving earth’s beautiful and amazing creatures for my grandchildren and their children to meet in their lifetime is a driving force. When my grandson talks of dinosaurs and I hear the awe in his voice, I realized I could help make sure that his children do not talk about elephants and giraffes the same way without ever seeing one alive. This excellent organization and the people who are becoming family to me, is the best vehicle to achieve our common goal.”

Priscilla Baldwin | AFC Festival Ambassador “The mission statement of the Art Institute I founded 20 years ago at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, and that of Artists for Conservation, are virtually identical. “Conservation through Art Education” and “Conservation: the Gift of Life” are equally applicable to both organizations.”

Brent Cooke

| Festival Patron

“When I became a member of AFC however, I realized this organization was of a quite different nature. Yes, it raised money to support the organization itself, but it went that one step further… encouraging member artists to donate a portion of their sales for conservation-centered charitable groups of their own choosing.”

Joyce Trygg

| Festival Patron

“As an artist and Signature Member of AFC, I have felt so honored to be in the company of such incredible artists, but I am most proud to be a part of the organization for its unique role in advancing the conservation cause through the arts.”
