1988

He painted while standing and between brush strokes might sit across the room, take a look, a quick drag, return, brush back his silver hair, habitually stroke his beard, then put down what he’d just ‘seen’. You could see his dark eyes seeing what wasn’t yet on canvas. A longer break, maybe a wine, and he might talk about painting in the abstract, never current work. He loved his friends, felt kinship with the many collectors. His reputation escalated too rapidly. Galleries demanded more. He balked. Only paintings could dictate to him. By 1980 he withdrew from all galleries and shows, painting and selling privately to the end, his 2000-3000 works still on collectors’ walls, testament to their quality. Textile artist Bonny Macnab combines her past experience with two-dimensional work into the visual elements of form, movement, color and line to evoke the human experience of emotions with fiber. Silk being one of her choice fibers due to its airy movement that evokes various emotion in her pieces. Macnab is driven by the ever-changing seasons that comes with each their own aromatic and sonic combination; each combination opens within us an ongoing series of memories and related emotion. Like the seeds of our earth, harvested and molded by the human hand to form functional or romantic structures; our memories and related emotions are formed and morph in the continuum of time and seasons. I love texture. The crevices where paint is trapped, the scraping excess material, sanding, having my hands in the action of building a surface that leads me to discovery…. At times it is the mystical part that emerges and gets me going, at others, some happening or an issue that encompasses the whole of society…. I usually end up completing my work with more questions than I had when I started particular piece or series. The situation is similar to what happens when a certain period in my life ends and new one begins. Part of “Conversations” series. The word parchment comes from a blend of Old French word parchemin and late Latin word pergamina. It is a durable writing surface used in ancient and medieval times. I love to paint in my small studio above the kitchen. In long winters in QuĂŠbec City I find myself cocooning with creation and odors from around the world. With the cold weather I always find myself looking for inspiration from the faces I see on the street or elsewhere. It is an immense source of stimulation and warmth. The mysterious lines of life makes me realize that we are all a product of interbreeding either cultural or physical, which add to the beautiful life line of humans. Have Brush Will Travel! From the Middle East to Monet's Garden. From Central America to the Yukon and Nunavut (Caribou and wolves! Oh my! Plein Air Tip: Don't let the wildlife get between you, the pilot and the helicopter!). From the east coast to the west coast of Canada (Rocks, plains, water, trees, bigger rocks, ice and snow! Plein Air Tip: My whisky flask is one of the most important tools in my paint box. It turns out that a wee dram is a great ice breaker literally (think about recovering from painting at subzero temperatures) and figuratively (think conversation starter in a group of strange artists.)). Serious Artist Travel Tip: When asked at the airport, you are travelling with artist colours NOT paint. Even when you show staff copies of the TSA regulations confirming the legality of artist colours, they may attempt to confiscate your "paint". Do NOT use the P word! Also, it is useful to pack a copy of the relevant TSA regulations, highlighted, in your checked bags. Mountain Wildflowers, 30x30, oil

Some of my favourite experiences that happen during art making involve recognizing a unique and inspirational moment of what I refer to as divine intervention. For example, I will move an object’s position in the studio, I will leave for a time and then upon returning I will see that same object in a brand-new way. Often times a new original idea will arise right before my eyes, as a result of mixing two older ideas together. These openings occur as a result of continuing to playfully explore and by reaching out for new ways of doing things. Website: http://www.dinatorrans.com/

Minimizing the complexities of building sculpture with found metal, is knowing what works for what you are creating. Discovery of usable shapes that work with the intended sculpture can have a serendipitous nature about it. Find a claw, build a bird – find a fin build a fish. The edge of a material piece in my sculpture becomes the gesture line of the image I am portraying. I wish it was all that simple, but the evolution of discovery has moved me from smaller found pieces for raptor birds, fish and miniature horses – up to monumental public sculptures internationally. I suffered a major stroke in 2005, which left me paralyzed on my right side and unable to speak. As I lay in that hospital room feeling sorry for myself, an odd thought kept flitting across my mind: I would never hold a paintbrush in my hand again. That was an odd thought as I hadn’t had a brush in my hand since 1968 when I took a year of art at the Montreal Museum of Fine Art. This one thought began to serve as my goal: Regain mobility and speech and enroll in art classes. I graduated with a degree in Fine Art from UBC in 2015 and had my first solo exhibition at the Hatch Gallery, in March 2018. Website: https://jannakumi.com/ Heritage Maple, drawing

Humanity is connected to nature; our place within it and the energy we derive from this relationship. As the world around us becomes more and more fraught with stress and uncertainty, there is an even deeper need to connect with the earth and consciously integrate joy in our lives. My work explores the unique forms and colours of nature and how they are an integral part of our lives – bringing contentment, grounding and joy. Capturing the energy in dynamic flower petals or communicating the movement of water, the visual is simplified to the barest elements. The unexpected colour combinations create energy and vibration, encompassing the theme of joy. Viewers are encouraged to enter the work and reflect on their current state, reconnect with the natural world around us and move forward with positivism. Following a dramatic vision change a few years ago, that affected depth perception, it was imperative that I discover new relationships between the paint, tools and supports. Experimentation was necessary and resulted in my art changing and growing stronger. My first love as a painter became the many possible means of applying paint to a surface using a variety of techniques to hover between abstract and representational elements.

I have found that one can never stop marketing and that you are continually required to find new ways to re-invent your artistic presence in an expanding marketplace. Years ago, I could set up a kiosk or booth and sell my work directly to patrons who knew I was there or they discovered me while in the area. Those days are far and few between as I rarely set up a physical booth anymore, as my website presence is my new booth. I do miss the in-person interaction with people who buy my art or stop to see my work, so feel free to stop by my website and send me a note. Love to hear what you have to say. Change 2016 24 x 24

Being an artist in whatever field is brutal. That is painting, poetry, writing and any creative endeavour is risky. Putting yourself to the hazard of daily and creative pressures. My advice is, don't do it, unless you are willing to suffer over the long haul, that is a career of 50 years of painting. So much angst and uncertainty over time takes it toil, I would have my life shown through the artwork, and find solace that perhaps with insight, understanding and being, I have grown as a human being. Sofa size, landscape, flowers all have their place in the art world. Abstraction is an internal dialogue, series of sketches, and blunt force trauma. The history of mark making resides in human history, the caves and hidden places. I am not different than a garbage collector on a hot summer day. The urinal cleaner has strength and character to provide for the family. Remembrance 2016 24 x 24

What I see is the human Spirit and allow it to illumine my way. A speck of dust, a grain of sand that is what humility is. Artwork joins itself in a process finding the One! Website: http://myronswistun.com/

My day typically starts late morning with a strong coffee in hand. Preparing my day in the studio includes reviewing photographs of places and things that caught my eye and actual found materials both natural and manmade. However, in reality, my working space is both indoors and outdoors. Many times, I work simultaneously doing my sculptural silver pieces and my mixed media paintings as relationships between works develop by each other’s inspiration. I am influenced by textures, mysteries of ancient cultures and unconventional materials that I find and use in my mixed media surfaces both in silver and in canvas. Website: http://mgdesigns.org/

When Paul Bruneau looks at a chunk of stone, he sees more than a seemingly shapeless piece of earthy or mineral matter. Paul is a full-blood Ojibway native and a member of the Mattagami First Nations Reserve, he sees more in a stone than others can see – he sees a work of art. He is a stone sculptor who has spent the past 18 years turning chunks of raw stone into stunning works of art. Those who have been privileged enough to see Paul's beautiful and unique pieces up close are often shocked by the range of emotions they experience. Some have been enveloped in warmth and joy, while others have been moved to tears. Paul works with a variety of mediums, including serpentine, marble, ivory, and deer and moose antler. His pieces have been sold in galleries such as Gallerie D’Art Vincent, Chateau Laurier, Ottawa; Images Boréales, Montréal; Maslak McLeod Gallery, Toronto; The Guild Shop, Toronto; The Arctic Bear, Toronto; Snow Goose, Ottawa; and the Gallery of the Kanadas, Ottawa. I moved to Ottawa when I was just 9 years old. It was a big change for me as I was in French school up to that point and transferred to an English school. I was not only very shy but I had a difficult time fitting in. I remember that our art teacher saw this and also recognized that I had a talent for the arts. During recess, she would bring me into her classroom instead of me suffering outside during recess. She would sit me down in front of a canvas and just let me paint. I still remember her name, Mrs. Rutledge. She saved me in many ways but she also started me on my path into the arts and put art in my soul. I don’t remember a time in my life when I was not pursuing some form of art. I was mostly using pencil and also pen and ink. It wasn’t until my oldest brother asked me to do a drawing of his 100year old cottage in British Columbia where he currently resides. I opted to make a painting instead and that was what started me painting and to this day I continue to paint. I am a realism painter now and a painting can take me anywhere from a month to three months. Website: http://www.gallantgallery.ca/

My abstract paintings are driven by intuition and inquiry into the power of colour. The paintings have no predetermined subject matter, but are a manifestation of the deep intuitive and emotional connection that I feel towards colour, light and energy. Painting is a freedom to express my experiments with colours and forms. In the end I enjoy the expressions and opinions of others as they contemplate the painting before them. What I want people to take away with my paintings is their own creative thoughts of what they see. Lago, 36x60

"When I am in nature, I feel inspired, connected, grounded and clearer. Colours, textures, light and shadows beg me to explore them. As a result my photography focuses on two elements of nature: the physical representation and the artistic interpretation.

The first time I sculpted stone, I was captivated. It allows me to express my artistic feelings by taking into account the stone’s natural flows as well as my feelings. This is accentuated by sculpting abstract forms. The freedom that comes with sculpting is enlightening and a perfect outlet for my creativity.

GLASS ART

Ship of Fools, Cast glass, welded mild steel I have that European way of speaking. My hands never stop moving. They are builders, creators, communicators. They are also my most prized possession. Without them I would not be an artist. I am happiest when I am creating.

Invaso Filiz

Glass is my passion. It’s very anamorphic nature encapsulates how I interact with the world. It engages me, I answer, it responds. We are both transformed. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Much of my work begins with discarded pieces of wood or furniture. I am fascinated with objects which with time have been forgotten, the solid wooden boards which have already been used for so many different purposes. These pieces serve as the foundation for my oils, paints, and images.

Tangled Thoughts, Acrylic /Copper Leaf For many years my work focused on commissioned portraiture. With plein air painting, I get to combine my two loves, painting and the outdoors. My plein air group tours to France and Cuba enable me the privilege of connecting others to their creativity through a more intimate experience of another's culture. Each introduction shrinks the world just a little bit more. Website: www.nikkisportraits.com

Kootenay Mountains, Untitled, painting As a painter, I am primarily a landscape impressionist. Through study, the gradual awakening of my inner senses has guided my endeavours to blend light and colour into beauty. I strive to realize this through each finished work. Painting "en plein air" puts me in an empowering environment, allowing me to paint "the moment" quickly and spontaneously. It enables me to condense and process what I see into a reality without clutter. Website: https://www.artistsincanada.com/savoie

PAINTINGS

Much of my landscape painting is now plein air, due to down-sizing. My studio in my residence is on the tighter side, so smaller paintings occupy my winters. In the spring and through till fall, I head out with the motorhome and travel the province from north to south in search of new imagery and I am rarely disappointed.

“Internum Fortitudinem” (installation) 2017 - Various metals, Glass, Sand and Rubber Dimensions: 10’ x 6’ x 20’ My sculptures and installations are often conceived out of play and experimentation. In a scientific way, I enjoy the ability to form glass, metals, wood or finding focus during nature hikes. Exploring and combining ideas from night dreams' inspiration also fuels my wonder. Mind, body, spirit: These are our personal components that life comes down to, and in which I strive to maintain balance. My mind is content when reading, studying, meditating and trying to help others when I can. My body is content with activity and a holistic approach to health that has grown very important to me.

PRINTMAKING

Art feeds my spirit. It’s simple, it’s complicated; it has no words, no correct interpretation or reason for being beautiful. And there’s something so peaceful – and beautiful – about that. Website: http://www.skylawayrynen.com/

SCULPTURE

Fugue 2, 2015, Glass Glass has been my artistic passion since the 1980’s when my brother and I opened our first studio. Most art is viewed in reflected light but glass is unique in that it modifies and changes light passing through it. Glass can be used in it’s molten state to create cast or blown objects, it can be kiln-fused with other glass, it can be ground and polished, it can be cut into shapes and leaded together and it can be sculpted and carved. At my studio each commission is welcomed as an opportunity to create original, beautiful and lasting architectural art. Website: https://theglassstudio.ca/

TEXTILES

My subject matter involves domesticty, and my favourite subjects are objects made or used by women, - berries, preserves, crocheted and tatted doilies. Working in the traditional medium of oil, I take a macroscopic view, often at a scale larger than life, and strive for a strong tactile quality, building up layers of paint. I am drawn to a subject by its beauty, colour and rhythm. I am interested in colour interaction and the drama in patterns. Website: http://virginiadupuis.com/
