He painted while standing and between brush strokes might sit across the room, take a look, a quick drag, return, brush back his silver hair, habitually stroke his beard, then put down what he’d just ‘seen’. You could see his dark eyes seeing what wasn’t yet on canvas. A longer break, maybe a wine, and he might talk about painting in the abstract, never current work. He loved his friends, felt kinship with the many collectors. His reputation escalated too rapidly. Galleries demanded more. He balked. Only paintings could dictate to him. By 1980 he withdrew from all galleries and shows, painting and selling privately to the end, his 2000-3000 works still on collectors’ walls, testament to their quality. I love texture. The crevices where paint is trapped, the scraping excess material, sanding, having my hands in the action of building a surface that leads me to discovery…. At times it is the mystical part that emerges and gets me going, at others, some happening or an issue that encompasses the whole of society…. I usually end up completing my work with more questions than I had when I started particular piece or series. The situation is similar to what happens when a certain period in my life ends and new one begins. Part of “Conversations” series. The word parchment comes from a blend of Old French word parchemin and late Latin word pergamina. It is a durable writing surface used in ancient and medieval times. I love to paint in my small studio above the kitchen. In long winters in QuĂŠbec City I find myself cocooning with creation and odors from around the world. With the cold weather I always find myself looking for inspiration from the faces I see on the street or elsewhere. It is an immense source of stimulation and warmth. The mysterious lines of life makes me realize that we are all a product of interbreeding either cultural or physical, which add to the beautiful life line of humans. Have Brush Will Travel! From the Middle East to Monet's Garden. From Central America to the Yukon and Nunavut (Caribou and wolves! Oh my! Plein Air Tip: Don't let the wildlife get between you, the pilot and the helicopter!). From the east coast to the west coast of Canada (Rocks, plains, water, trees, bigger rocks, ice and snow! Plein Air Tip: My whisky flask is one of the most important tools in my paint box. It turns out that a wee dram is a great ice breaker literally (think about recovering from painting at subzero temperatures) and figuratively (think conversation starter in a group of strange artists.)). Serious Artist Travel Tip: When asked at the airport, you are travelling with artist colours NOT paint. Even when you show staff copies of the TSA regulations confirming the legality of artist colours, they may attempt to confiscate your "paint". Do NOT use the P word! Some of my favourite experiences that happen during art making involve recognizing a unique and inspirational moment of what I refer to as divine intervention. For example, I will move an object’s position in the studio, I will leave for a time and then upon returning I will see that same object in a brand-new way. Often times a new original idea will arise right before my eyes, as a result of mixing two older ideas together. Minimizing the complexities of building sculpture with found metal, is knowing what works for what you are creating. Discovery of usable shapes that work with the intended sculpture can have a serendipitous nature about it. Find a claw, build a bird – find a fin build a fish. The edge of a material piece in my sculpture becomes the gesture line of the image I am portraying. I wish it was all that simple, but the evolution of discovery has moved me from smaller found pieces for raptor birds, fish and miniature horses – up to monumental public sculptures internationally. I suffered a major stroke in 2005, which left me paralyzed on my right side and unable to speak. As I lay in that hospital room feeling sorry for myself, an odd thought kept flitting across my mind: I would never hold a paintbrush in my hand again. That was an odd thought as I hadn’t had a brush in my hand since 1968 when I took a year of art at the Montreal Museum of Fine Art. This one thought began to serve as my goal: Regain mobility and speech and enroll in art classes. I have found that one can never stop marketing and that you are continually required to find new ways to re-invent your artistic presence in an expanding marketplace. Years ago, I could set up a kiosk or booth and sell my work directly to patrons who knew I was there or they discovered me while in the area. Those days are far and few between as I rarely set up a physical booth anymore, as my website presence is my new booth. Being an artist in whatever field is brutal. That is painting, poetry, writing and any creative endeavour is risky. Putting yourself to the hazard of daily and creative pressures. My advice is, don't do it, unless you are willing to suffer over the long haul, that is a career of 50 years of painting. So much angst and uncertainty over time takes it toil, I would have my life shown through the artwork, and find solace that perhaps with insight, understanding and being, I have grown as a human being. Sofa size, landscape, flowers all have their place in the art world. Abstraction is an internal dialogue, series of sketches, and blunt force trauma. The history of mark making resides in human history, the caves and hidden places. I am not different than a garbage collector on a hot summer day. Lisa Levasseur created a new art form using recycled paint to form 3D sculpted paintings unlike anything seen before. She took some time off from her busy life in 2010 and began painting utilising a range of different techniques for using recycled paint. After two months, her first collection of over 60 works was almost sold out and attracted the attention of industry professionals. Lisa became featured as a Modern Art Master and Top Contemporary Artist in magazines, books and exhibitions all over the world. My day typically starts late morning with a strong coffee in hand. Preparing my day in the studio includes reviewing photographs of places and things that caught my eye and actual found materials both natural and manmade. However, in reality, my working space is both indoors and outdoors. When Paul Bruneau looks at a chunk of stone, he sees more than a seemingly shapeless piece of earthy or mineral matter. Paul is a full-blood Ojibway native and a member of the Mattagami First Nations Reserve, he sees more in a stone than others can see – he sees a work of art. He is a stone sculptor who has spent the past 18 years turning chunks of raw stone into stunning works of art. Those who have been privileged enough to see Paul's beautiful and unique pieces up close are often shocked by the range of emotions they experience. Some have been enveloped in warmth and joy, while others have been moved to tears. Paul works with a variety of mediums, including serpentine, marble, ivory, and deer and moose antler. I moved to Ottawa when I was just 9 years old. It was a big change for me as I was in French school up to that point and transferred to an English school. I was not only very shy but I had a difficult time fitting in. I remember that our art teacher saw this and also recognized that I had a talent for the arts. During recess, she would bring me into her classroom instead of me suffering outside during recess. She would sit me down in front of a canvas and just let me paint. I still remember her name, Mrs. Rutledge. She saved me in many ways but she also started me on my path into the arts and put art in my soul. I don’t remember a time in my life when I was not pursuing some form of art. I was mostly using pencil and also pen and ink. It wasn’t until my oldest brother asked me to do a drawing of his 100year old cottage in British Columbia where he currently resides. I opted to make a painting instead and that was what started me painting and to this day I continue to paint. Susan Gosevitz began her professional art career after graduating from the Toronto School of Art in 2009. Awarded the top painting prize to a graduating student, she quickly garnered peer recognition when juried into The Society of Canadian Artists in 2010. Susan had always been a life-time painter mentored by Canadian Wildlife Artist Robert Bateman in her high school years. In 2012 she was awarded The Robert Bateman Award at The National Gallery in Ottawa. Susan describes herself as a painter of nature and the natural world. Fugue 2, 2015, Glass Glass has been my artistic passion since the 1980’s when my brother and I opened our first studio. Most art is viewed in reflected light but glass is unique in that it modifies and changes light passing through it. Glass can be used in it’s molten state to create cast or blown objects, it can be kiln-fused with other glass, it can be ground and polished, it can be cut into shapes and leaded together and it can be sculpted and carved.
