C-2 Arnold Burrell
Occasionally an instantaneous, unexpected awareness of fusion between the physical being and the immediate physical world emblazons itself on a permanent synapse in the mind’s eye. It is forever accessible to total recall, a molten trice when everything is enhanced but only significant for itself. When I first saw Arnold Burrell’s work, and ever since, I realized this happened to him continually and each work was his depiction
of these flashes for others to see and interpret for themselves. As a writer rather than a painter, I saw his language of painting portrays an experience of being human, controlling the emotion, conveying it without the muddle factor. A Burrell landscape is his truth as he saw it at the time and excluded whatever was extraneous to the essence. Also with a figure, the work handles emotion rather than surrendering impotently, with just enough divine chaos for the rhythm to catch you. Each viewer sees what he saw, but not necessarily the way he saw it—which makes any work personal for the viewer. So I have my own ‘titles’ for each work, for what I see. Because my language is writing words and his is painting them. I see different things in the same work different days, a great similarity in all the arts. Great motivation for writing the biography-in-progress. Ellen Mackay, biographer sumwhere@shaw.ca Website: http://arnoldburrell.com/ 7

Textile artist Bonny Macnab combines her past experience with two-dimensional work into the visual elements of form, movement, color and line to evoke the human experience of emotions with fiber. Silk being one of her choice fibers, due to it's airy movement, evoke various emotions in her pieces. Macnab is driven by the ever-changing seasons that comes with each their own aromatic and sonic combination; each combination opens within us an ongoing series of memories and related emotion. Like the seeds of our earth, harvested and molded by the human hand to form functional or romantic structures; our memories and related emotions are formed and morph in the continuum of time and seasons. Moving Colour, Havana, Cuba Acrylic on wood panel 24" x 36" Price available on request
Dwight Baird was born and raised in Huntingdon, Quebec, a small town southwest of Montreal, Canada. He worked briefly as a graphic artist and then spent two years traveling and painting in Europe. These travels resulted in his first two collections of works, “ A Touch of Europe”, in 1983 and, “There and Back Again”, in 1986. For the next twenty years he specialized in watercolors and developed a very unique style which was featured in the publication, The Artist’s Magazine. During this period Baird completed four additional series of paintings exploring specific themes. The first, in 1989, entitled “Newfoundland”, featured fourteen larger paintings and several smaller studies depicting life in Canada's eastern most province. Following this he completed ,”Midway”, a collection of 30 paintings and sketches focusing on the sights, sounds and smells of amusement parks, small town fairs and and the "Carny" lifestyle.
In the early 2000’s, Baird put his watercolors aside and since this point has been working solely with acrylic paint on wood panel. This major shift inspired a colorful series, “Contemporary Nudes” - paintings based on figure drawings of live models. This shift also coincided with Baird’s first visit to Havana, Cuba. This trip became a springboard for an extensive collection of paintings which continues as the main inspiration for his work today. Working in acrylics, Baird has developed a unique and exciting new style of contemporary realism. His broad, impressionist strokes combined with specific detailed areas and his dynamic use of light, color and composition have become the signature of his work. Baird’s new subject matter has resulted in an extensive depiciton of the daily struggle of life in Cuba. This Cuban work can also be seen as a historical documentation of a country anchored in the past, but now on the verge of dramatic change. Withover two hundred completed works, “Cuba, si!” is the definitive collection of Socialist Castro era works. It is one artist’s pictoral rendition of a unqiue time in a very unique country... Dwight Baird exhibits in many of the most prestigious art festivals and has won numerous prizes for his work. He lives and works in Montreal. For enquiries contact Dwight Baird though his website.

Minimizing the complexities of building sculpture with found metal, is knowing what works for what you are creating. Discovery of usable shapes that work with the intended sculpture can have a serendipitous nature about it. Find a claw, build a bird – find a fin build a fish. The edge of a material piece in my sculpture becomes the gesture line of the image I am portraying. I wish it was all that simple, but the evolution of discovery has moved me from smaller found pieces for raptor birds, fish and miniature horses – up to monumental public sculptures internationally. My first love as a painter is the myriad of ways to apply pigment to a surface. I am a mark-maker, making marks until they relate to each other. I aim to hover between abstract and representational elements. Saskatchewan’s dramatic seasons, vast skies and diverse landscape offers spectacular source of inspiration. During the three decades that I have been creating art, I have benefitted from the critique and learning from many artists: at Emma Lake Kenderdine Campus, in my local community, and through art workshops and the viewing of art in many galleries in many countries. I maintain an independent practice and have exhibited paintings in private and public galleries and in community venues. Years ago, I could set up a kiosk or booth and sell my work directly to patrons who knew I was there or they discovered me while in the area. Those days are few and far between now as I rarely set up a physical booth anymore. Today it is my website that acts as my booth or Kiosk. Myron Swistun’s work asks the viewer to go beyond the surface qualities of a painting. We are asked to look beyond the physical impression of the work: to look a little deeper in order to see beyond the obvious, and understand the unique composition of each painting. His paintings speak of other dimensions, timelessness, and harmony between disparate elements. This is what happens when painterly effects are transported to aesthetic and spiritual places. This is what it looks like when symbols, light and colour mix, combine, form and dissolve within the shared space of a canvas. Each canvas explores a different range of tone and colour, and a conscious placement of line and shape. Compositions contain some kind of secret life- the sense of time passing and looping backward and forward- a landscape where time is not measured in minutes, days or years. Swistun's work moves from representational symbols and shapes, into abstraction through the use of large fields of colour. It is interplay between the philosophical intentions of the artist, the spiritual and mystical qualities of the symbols and shapes. Traeger doesn’t lean towards traditional landscapes or subject matter. She loves to bring a hyperrealist style into her work. Inspiration is pulled from urban landscapes, old buildings, weathered signage, anything that is iconic, eclectic or rusty. Evoking a memory, creating a unique story or adding a whimsical touch, through both the visual piece and the title of the work. There are stories in all of these forgotten treasures just waiting to be unleashed in a painting. My passion for art comes from an innate desire to capture the boundless beauty of nature that surrounds us. With the effects of global warming and natural disasters, my planet is rapidly changing. For this reason, I seek to capture breathtaking images from every corner of the globe. Beauty can be found everywhere, from my own backyard to the other side of the world. Every region has it's own unique plant life, climate and geographical landscapes that continue to inspire me. My style is realism. I paint using acrylics and create depth by building layers. The colours I choose are true to the scene and I capture realism through shapes and details. To add more passion and dimension to my work, I use washes that allow the underlying layers to come through.

My abstract paintings are driven by intuition and inquiry into the power of colour. The paintings have no predetermined subject matter, but are a manifestation of the deep intuitive and emotional connection that I feel towards colour, light and energy. Painting is a freedom to express my experiments with colours and forms. In the end I enjoy the expressions and opinions of others as they contemplate the painting before them. What I want people to take away with my paintings is their own creative thoughts of what they see.

David Burch
Abstract Expressionist Painter
ANCESTRY, Acrylic on canvas, 36x36x2. $ 2,000
SINGULARITY* Acrylic on canvas, 40x40x1, $ 2400 * Singularity is a term used by astronomers to describe black holes in space. David Burch is known for his very colourful and dramatic canvases. He is that rare artist who, before he took up the brush when he was in his early 50s, collected mostly abstract art for 30 years from Canada, the USA, Europe and most of the states in the former Soviet Union. He moved to New York City in 1995 from Toronto where he had lived from 1967 (although born and raised in Alberta) and consequently started painting by attending the Art Students League of NYC (ASL).
42
His primary instructor was Mr. Ronnie Landfield who is considered one of the pre-eminent abstract expressionists working today in the USA. David’s paintings owe a great deal of gratitude to Ronnie’s work and although David moved back to Alberta in 2007 he continues to paint with Ronnie on frequent trips back to his “home town”, the trips usually lasting up to two months. David engaged in painting in oil on canvas somewhat fantastical abstract landscapes early in his painting life and increasingly with attention being paid to individual brush strokes and the exploration of colour has dramatically expanded his artistic horizons. Although he painted strictly with oil on canvas very early, he switched to predominantly acrylics circa 2012. Website: www.davidburchpaintings.com

Never Ceasing Love, watercolour
5777, 9 x 12.inches, watercolour
Beauty surrounds us. It is in the vivid colours of a sunset, in the sparkle of a child’s eyes as they smile, or in the light dancing through the trees. I want to absorb it all and capture the images with paint or pencil. Art is communication, and through it we are able to listen and express our innermost thoughts, not only to ourselves, but to the world and spiritually to God. As Madeleine L’Engle said, “Art creates a window to God”.
Bob Pitzel, an accomplished Saskatchewan watercolour artist, depicts images of vanishing rural landscapes, transportation and farm implements by subtly using detail, colour and light and the contrast of geometric versus organic shapes. His paintings convey an astonishing and haunting intensity, moments in time, that often go unnoticed by passersby, all with a stark realism that is uniquely his own.
Most of my paintings are in watercolour. I also use my own handmade paper for painting, using a variety of media. Most of the subjects I paint are found in nature, from large landscapes to the small details of a flower, whether exploring one idea or a theme.
Born in Humboldt, SK in 1948, Bob left the community at age 18 to study art at the Alberta College of Art (ACAD), in Calgary, then returned to Humboldt to run his Graphic Design business for 34 years. His paintings can be found in collections of businsesses, governments and in private ownership in Canada as well as internationally. member of American Society of Railway Artists.

Kootenay Mountains,
For many years my work focused on commissioned portraiture. With plein air painting, I get to combine my two loves, painting and the outdoors. My plein air group tours to France and Cuba enable me the privilege of connecting others to their creativity through a more intimate experience of another's culture. Each introduction shrinks the world just a little bit more. ____________________
Much of my landscape painting is now plein air, due to down-sizing. My studio in my residence is on the tighter side, so smaller paintings occupy my winters. In the spring and through till fall, I head out with the motorhome and travel the province from north to south in search of new imagery and I am rarely disappointed.

Patricia Savoie Painter
Wiz Wensel
Painter, Edmonton AB
Selection of 9 inspirational abstract paintings
As a painter, I am primarily a landscape impressionist. Through study, the gradual awakening of my inner senses has guided my endeavours to blend light and colour into beauty. I strive to realize this through each finished work. Painting "en plein air" puts me in an empowering environment, allowing me to paint "the moment" quickly and spontaneously and to condense and process what I see into a reality without clutter.
Wiz has been a visual artist and formalist, abstract painter for over 30 years. Much of her work is primarily concerned with colour. "I am very passionate about colour and surrounding myself with beautiful, vibrant hues that uplift me. I derive energy and inspiration from them and feel that my paintings offer the same to others. Working in an abstract format enables me to be experimental and playful with the process. The outcome is often unpredictable and therefore adds a higher degree of risk in my art making. Please feel free to see more of my work."

Encaustic Painting
Kathy Bradshaw is revived by an ancient painting medium By Paul Constable The new age of painting with an old age medium. From the time of the Pharos this time honoured medium was used to embellish wall murals as well produce life like death masks that were placed over the mummified face of their loved ones. Even after thousands of years these likenesses retained their owners likeness in colour and brilliance as the day they were produced. Egyptian mummies were sealed in airtight tombs, which helped keep the paintings like the day they were painted, but even so, today’s encaustics will be retain their freshness for a lifetime. Kathy's portrait version (on the right) of a portrait belonging to an Egyptian Princess done in encaustic over 2000 years ago.
I am visiting Kathy Bradshaw her studio in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan as she takes me through the process of creating her landscapes, horses and animals. The studio is outfitted with a ventilation system positioned above her stainless steel work table. A warming plate off to one side has a half a dozen empty cat food tins partially filled with bees wax that are melting on the surface. Each tin is tinted with a different colour of oil paint and she has a 2 inch flat hogs hair brush dedicated to each colour. Encaustic paintings are not as fragile as you might think. “I add a 1/7 parts Damar varnish to each tin, this hardens the surface of the wax for durability, says Kathy.” Kathy is an experienced oil painter and in the past 15 years she has almost totally switched over to encaustic painting. "I love what I can do with wax and oil and it surprises me every day. I am able to add gold leaf and other elements into my work as I build onto the paintings using transparent layers of wax and pigment”. Continued page 56

Kathy tends to work with an established pallet before starting out and the pigments flow onto birch panels that offer stability for the wax. The pigments set up quickly and she works the surface with a hot air gun and a butane torch. (That is why she has a metal table top) The heat and hot air push the pigments around as she tilts the board from side to side moving a wave of colour with it. She uses oil sticks to work directly on the surface of the hot plate and then mixes and layers the colours. It is surprizing how much detail she can achieve doing this. For finer detail she uses hogs hair brushes to load and move the paint and wax around. Brushes are dedicated to certain pigments to keep the colours fresh. “I switched to encaustic as there are a lot of traditional landscape oil painters out there and I was able to acquire Gallery representation because what I was doing was different. My days are filled with commissions and working toward gallery showings, so not much inventory is left in the studio. I feel very fortunate that people have embraced what I am doing.” See how this painting has evolved and what it looks like finished on Kathy’s page 44 of this catalogue. See how your Art Purchase can contribute to an Artist's Pension Plan, with no additional cost to you. Your Art purchase makes a difference It is a challege making a living as an Artist, yet purchasing Art through the Artists in Canada Art Sales Gallery can help contribute to an Artist's Pension Plan. When Artists in Canada handle the art sale for the artist (as the agent), we make sure the customer is happy with the art purchase, this allows the artist more time to do their art.
How it works
"Your Art purchase will be with you for a long time – but knowing you helped this artist with their future, will be with you forever."
Artists in Canada holds the customer's payment and instructs the artist to ship the art. Once the art is received and accepted by the customer, we then pay the artist. If the artist is a registered (Artists in Canada) Pension Plan contributor and is a member in good standing, Artists in Canada will place (up to 10%) of each sale into their personal plan, earning 70% in total. __________________________________________ (This is the Artist's own fixed Pension Plan and follows them for life, managed by (SPP), an accredited Pension Plan company. Each Artist's account is managed independent of Artists in Canada, even if Artists in Canada should cease to exist.)
