Having opened on 8 July in celebration of NAIDOC week with a Welcome to Country by Marcia McGuire-Brownley (see pictures left), this collaborative exhibition between Artitja Fine Art and the City of Perth highlights the importance of country through imagery and storytelling. A visual exploration of complex stories around the geography of the land and narratives associated with different times, this exhibition has been sourced by Artitja Fine Art Gallery from some of the most remote and established Aboriginal art centres throughout Western Australia.

With over 40 artists from regions as distant as Kalumburu and Balgo in the Kimberley, to the Pilbara and Tjukurlu in the western desert and Kalka on the WA/SA/NT border, the exhibition gives an insight into the cultural importance of place and story.

The exhibition also incorporates the WA launch of the Indigenous Jewellery Project, Australia’s first and only National Indigenous Contemporary Jewellery project.

OUR LAND : OUR PLACE can be viewed Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm on the Ground Floor foyer of Perth’s iconic Council House, 27 St George’s Tce, Perth. (Opposite the Como Hotel/Old Treasury building)

NINUKU ARTS Ninuku Arts is a wholly-Indigenous owned and governed Art Centre which supports artists from two communities Pipalyatjara and Kalka. Each have populations of around 100-150 Anangu and the majority are Pitjantjatjara speakers – Anangu simply means ‘people’ in Pitjantjatjara. Both communities are located in the far north-western corner of South Australia, near the tri-state border of South Australia, Western Australia and Northern Territory. The two communities, fourteen kilometres apart, are surrounded by the rolling, rocky hills of the Tomkinson Ranges and are part of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands. Both Kalka and Pipalyatjara are peaceful places. This is a result of strong governance, cultural engagement and pride among local Anangu. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

TJARLIRLI ARTS Tjarlirli Art Centre represents the artists of Tjukurla in the Ngannyatjarra lands of Western Australia and Kaltukatjara in the Northern Territory. The artwork has strong links with the Papunya Tula movement as families left Kintore and Kiwirrkurra to return to their homelands in the mid 1980s. As the primary business venture in Tjukurla focusing on Indigenous people, Tjarlirli Art is providing much needed income and employment in this remote town of approximately 40 people. As a member of Desart and Western Desert Mob the art centre has a strong mandate to provide training and skills development for its members and opportunities for Indigenous artists to travel and participate in Industry events of all kinds. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

PAPULANKUTJA ARTISTS Papulankutja Artists is a 100% Artist owned and governed Art Centre, which supports Blackstone Community. Papulankutja (Blackstone) was established after Ngaayatjarra people walked out of Warburton mission in the1970s and returned to their land. Papulankutja Artists was established in 2001 and incorporated in 2004 growing out of Blackstone’s women’s centre. After many years of working through the women’s centre and then the community hall, Papulankutja Artists opened their own Art Studio in 2009.

Papulankutja Artists is known for its innovative fibre work, as well as their painters and carvers. Fibre Artists from Papulankutja, won the 2005 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award with a large woven Toyota, which was developed and facilitated by Tjanpi Desert Weavers (a social enterprise of the Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (NPY) Women’s Council). Papulankutja Artists strive for everybody working together with a strong heart. Our themes are about country and include Seven Sisters’ story, Wati Kutjarra, IIlupa and Nintuka. Papulankutja Artists are very community focussed. Today, women and men, young people and old people, work together. Papulankutja Artists has reached out to neighbouring communities and started a regional art reach program in 2008. There are now 60 artists at Papulankutja and 20 artists at Jameson working for Papulankutja Artists. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

WARMUN ART CENTRE Warmun Art Centre is owned and governed by Gija people with 100% of income returning to the community. The centre at Warmun in the Kimberley region of Western Australia was established in 1998 by the late founding members of the contemporary painting movement in Warmun such as Rover Thomas, Queenie McKenzie, Madigan Thomas and Hector Jandany. These elders recognised and responded to the need for a community owned and controlled centre through which they could support, maintain and promote Gija art, language and culture. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

ARTITJA FINE ART GALLERY AND THE CITY OF PERTH OUR LAND : OUR PLACE exhibition Ground Floor, Council House, 27 St George’s Tce, Perth, WA

In 2019 Artitja Fine Art (AFA) proudly celebrates its 15th birthday as one of Perth’s most reputable and accessible indigenous art galleries. Launched on the 19th March, 2004 at the Royal George Gallery in East Fremantle, the gallery’s innovative operating model of holding quarterly ‘satellite’ shows in a variety of exhibition spaces has contributed to its success. In between exhibitions Artitja Fine Art operates by appointment at its South Fremantle base. This flexibility gives owners Anna and Arthur the opportunity for essential visits to remote art centre communities; and a personalised service to current and prospective clients and lovers of Aboriginal Art. In 2016 Artitja Fine Art were the recipients of the Corporate Social Responsibility Award, and in 2017 received the Outstanding Cultural Enterprise Award at the Fremantle Business Awards. Both awards were from a strong field of worthy finalists. “In keeping with a global trend to use art to bring people from different cultures together, our aim and driving force has always been to make connections between city dwellers and remote Indigenous communities. It is a great privilege to have an entry into the lives and the stories of Aboriginal artists in some of the remotest communities in Australia, and be able to extend our experience and knowledge to our local community as well as passionate followers in Melbourne and Sydney, all of whom who are eager to learn more about our First Nations people.” Director, Anna Kanaris
