From the Editor At the time of writing we have just marked the 1-year anniversary of the first lock-down. I saw one comedian on Twitter write ‘I haven’t heard anybody say, where did the last year go’. Beyond the joke I think they may have missed the point. For many of us the last year has been a year lost. Lost experiences, lost jobs, lost businesses, even lost loved ones. With the roadmap in place there are reasons to be optimistic as we want to reclaim our lives but I think we are all feeling the same caution. My own thoughts are that we have to be brave. Embrace the changes we need to make, with vaccines, social distancing, masks and hand sanitising that will allow us to embrace the opportunity to reclaim our lives. As they say, hindsight is a wonderful thing but I suppose this toll has caused us all the be a bit grumpy, maybe it’s the social distancing we have had to maintain but it seems like there is growing gaps in our ability to empathise and understand each other. But what I would say to that is, it was only just over a year ago when #bekind was doing the rounds as a reaction to Caroline Flack losing her life so tragically. Nobody knows what anybody else is going through behind closed doors – so it’s very simple, just be kind to each other – kindness never hurt anyone.

In other news, Bez and Shaun Ryder (Flake and Rafa’s new nicknames!) have made a full recovery! They are sporadically trying to pull us back in the direction of the woods – can’t think why! – however, we have managed to divert their attentions and we have been incident free for 1 month! The Vet will be disappointed – this monthly visit was ensuring their optional extra of a personal Butler for the duration of their round the world tour!! (*I am only joking – our Vets do a brilliant job & they have trained hard for their profession*). At the time of writing, I think the whole of the UK is poised for the first stage of the road map to be executed without a hitch – fingers and toes crossed!

LEISURE TIME AT KIRKBY Back when the pits were open there were lots of leisurely things to do. The Festival Hall had dances and also wrestling was held there.

Festival Hall

This was rebuilt after a fire in the early 50’s

St. Wilfrid’s

Kingsway Park - North

East Corner

Another pastime was snooker and biiliards. The colliery welfares also had a lot going on. Live music and dancing, Darts and Domino matches. Some welfares also held bingo. Most had a colliery brass band. There was an annual Coal Queen at most welfares. They also did a lot for the children of the members. They organised outings to the seaside and Christmas parties. Some of the pubs had live music sometimes with local bands and singers. There were 3 cinemas in Kirkby. These were the Star, The King’s cinema and the Regent. The Regent is the only one left and is now a Weatherspoons.

There was also a lot of activities on Kingsway Park. Bowls, Cricket and Football matches. Pantomimes and plays were put on at the Pathfinders youth club. There were various activities for people. Local people also organised outings. Allotment societies, Businesspeople. On whit Sunday the churches organised walks round with children in their new clothes. Each Church and Chapel had their own banner. People turned out on the streets to watch.

This is a little poem that I wrote. Brothers and sisters playing together Walking to school in all kinds of weather Walking round in the sun Then off to the Church Hall for a bun.

Pension options for over 55- 's What alternatives do you have at retirement?

Raiding your pension before retirement remains a popular option, with more than 1.3 million savers taking flexible payments from their pensions in the three years since 2015. While the premise of withdrawing 25% of your pension pot tax-free is nothing new, the options you have when you reach the age of 55 have increased. If you're considering taking money out of your pension pot, you've got lots to weigh up, but first of all you need to know what type of pension you have.

Pension types

Pensions usually fall into two different types: occupational or private schemes. Private pensions, such as a stakeholder pension, personal pension or self invested personal pension (SIPP), are money purchase schemes. Occupational pension schemes are further divided into defined contribution and defined benefit schemes - but pension freedoms only apply to defined contribution pensions. Defined benefit pensions - also known as final salary pensions - are seen as the Rolls Royce of pensions as what you receive depends on your earnings when you retire and is not dependent upon investment performance and growth. They are set up by your employer and provide you with a percentage of your final salary at retirement. While final salary pensions do not qualify for pension freedoms, it is possible to convert them into a pot of cash - but beware this is area targeted by scammers and is a high-risk strategy as you will be giving up valuable guarantees. Pension freedoms also do not apply to your state pension.

Options at 55 Leave it untouched

Continuing to save into your pension until the time comes to retire is the default position for most retirement savers in the UK. You can contribute up to £40,000 of your annual earnings towards your pension pot in 2018/19 without paying tax, subject to taper rules which may apply to high earners and which reduce the annual allowance. This cap remains in place for 2019/20 at the time of writing. Doing nothing is usually the best option unless you need the money for something in particular, whether that's to pay off your mortgage or help your grown-up child get on to the property ladder.

Withdraw everything If you did take this extreme step, the first 25% of your retirement savings would be free from tax and the remaining 75% would be taxed at your marginal rate of income tax. This is still the case in 2018/19 - but be aware that doing so could nudge you into a higher income tax band and see you paying 40% as a higher-rate taxpayer or 45% as an additional-rate taxpayer.

pshireHill

Advice to complement your Lifestyle

Take several lump sums -

....

Another option is to take 25% of your pension pot tax-free and leave the other 75% exactly where it is, continuing to grow as an investment into your existing pensions. Whether you pay income tax on taking several lump sums depends on your total annual income in any financial year and the personal allowance. You could withdraw up to £11,850 from your pension pot in 2018/19 without paying income tax on your withdrawals so long as you have received no other income in the tax year. Any amount over this threshold will be taxed at your marginal rate of income tax. This may be useful if you want to stagger your withdrawals over a period of time, such as to the point at which you retire.

Lump sum and drawdown

You could opt to take 25% tax-free after reaching the age of 55, and use the rest to buy a flexible income drawdown product. As this is an investment, you should be aware that the value of your product can rise and fall at any time and you should accept the element of risk involved.

Lump sum and an annuity

Buying an annuity works in a similar way to buying a flexible income drawdown product in that you can withdraw 25% of your pension pot without paying tax and purchase an annuity with the rest. The concept of buying an annuity is sound as they usually pay you a fixed annual income up until you die, but they have fallen out of favour with retirement savers in recent years. If the idea of having a fixed annual income for the rest of your life appeals to you, be sure to shop around for the best annuity rates.

Mix and match

It's possible to consider mixing and matching your pension options, such as using some of your pension pot to buy a flexible income drawdown product and some to purchase an annuity. Various other combinations are available but be sure to seek professional advice before doing so as this is by far the most complex option.

Seek help with your decision

When the time comes to retire, what you do with your pension savings is one of the most important decisions you will make as it will affect the rest of your life. The Government offers free guidance for over-50s through its Pension Wise initiative, which was introduced after the pension freedoms were brought in. However, the guidance merely outlines your options in a similar way to this brief guide and you should speak to our experts for tailor-made advice to suit your situation. Professional advice is also compulsory if you want to transfer defined benefit or safeguarded benefits worth £30,000 or more.

Responsible Tourism – The Countryside Code Derbyshire, and in particular the Peak District, is full of pretty villages and stunning scenery, making the area a hot spot for tourism. Derbyshire, and in particular the Peak District, is full of pretty villages and stunning scenery, making the area a hot spot for tourism. Tourists are of course welcomed with open arms by those who directly benefit from the cash they bring with them. Many shops, cafes, hotels, pubs and B&B’s cannot survive without the visitor economy, a fact which has been highlighted by the disruption caused this year due to the Coronavirus and resulting lockdowns. Something else that has been brought to the fore by the events of 2020 is that many visitors to rural locations have absolutely no idea of how to behave in a countryside setting. A fact which has caused local residents in many areas to despair at the behaviour of (an admittedly small) number of people.

So here, for the benefit of the few (i.e. those who live and work in our rural communities) is a condensed list of ‘rules’ for the ‘many’ to adhere to the next time they get into their cars for a trip to the countryside (taken from https://www.gov.uk/government/ publications/the-countryside-code): Respect other people •

Consider the local community and other people enjoying the outdoors

Park carefully so access to gateways and driveways is clear

Leave gates and property as you find them

Follow paths but give way to others where it’s narrow

Lighting fires and disposal BBQs in tinder dry locations; leaving behind mounds of rubbish for other people to clear up; allowing dogs to roam freely amongst livestock, and more. Residents in our picturesque villages have been left scratching their heads in disbelief.

Protect the natural environment

Many of us may remember the TV advert from the 1970s featuring Joe and Petunia, an inoffensive but clueless couple ‘enjoying’ a visit to the countryside and leaving chaos in their wake. The content of that particular ad was based on The Countryside Code, a public information document drafted in the 50s and updated several times since. Aardman Studios (of Wallace and Grommit fame) produced an advert featuring the creature comfort characters when the code was revised in 2004. For some inexplicable reason however, many visitors seem to be oblivious of the Countryside Code – or maybe it’s simply that a certain section of the public feel rules do not apply to them. Judging by the illegal parking that went on over last summer,

18

when city dwellers were given the green light to get in their cars and ‘exercise’ in the countryside, maybe that is the case.

Leave no trace of your visit, take all your litter home

Don’t have BBQs or fires

Keep dogs under effective control

Dog poo - bag it and bin it

Enjoy the outdoors

Plan ahead, check what facilities are open, be prepared

Follow advice and local signs and obey social distancing measures

None of this advice is complicated, in fact most of it is just common sense, and yet following these simple guidelines will make our rural communities pleasant places to visit at any time of year. These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Laura moved to the Peak District several years ago to pursue her passion for writing. Book Review The idea of flesh and blood humans existing alongside what used to be called robots – now artificial intelligence – isn’t new. There have been films and books written about it even earlier than the days of R2D2 in Star Wars. But novels about what will happen when we really do have synthetic humans in our lives at a personal level are having a moment just now. And maybe it’s not that surprising. In reality they are becoming infinitely more sophisticated both in terms of what they look like and how their brains will operate. So the possibility of AI companions, butlers, sex slaves, carers, even scientists maybe, are not quite so remote. Are we on the edge of science fiction becoming real? Machines Like Me by Ian McEwan is one of the several books currently exploring this exciting and maybe scary thought. The artificial human that Charlie, a drifter, buys with an inheritance from his mother, is clever, beautiful and capable of just about anything a person could want from a companion. And maybe a few things they wouldn’t want. It’s fascinating stuff. What makes us human, could we ever replicate what goes on in the human brain and heart? What happens when the rules we think we live by are different to our real lives? There’s some great insight into people and moments of fairly dark humour in this book. Clever and interesting and very very readable.

Vintage Rambles a with raFf lake and

This walk originally featured in the magazines back in May 2014. Thank you to Terry from Alfreton Ramblers Club, who submitted the original. We have changed the shorter route slightly to make use of a nice path up to the Manor, avoiding a couple of fields, which can be particularly muddy at the moment. One of the great things about this walk is that there are two options; a shorter walk (marked in green) which takes you right up by the Manor or another longer walk (marked in red), which gives you a great view of the manor from up on high. Enjoy!

3.5/4.5 mile circular from South Wingfield, around Wingfield Manor A moderate and varied walk for you and your dog. The route should take around 2/2.5 hours. The route has a couple of decent inclines and there are stiles to cross. There are a few stretches of road so take care. The terrain is generally good but as with all walks if it has been wet there will probably be some muddy sections so a good pair of boots or wellies as always is highly recommended.

1.

Begin the walk by taking the signposted path opposite Taylors Mill to cross a footbridge. Then cross the fields alongside the River Amber before crossing the edge of the playing field, over a footbridge and passing through a tunnel under the railway.

7.

2.

Turn right and follow the railway for some distance as it takes you beside Shaw Wood. After the wood carry on ahead and keep to the right of a large detached house, following signs to a wooden gate on your left.

5.

The Other Lambretta Boys

In the 1960s and early 70s the newsrooms were full of stories featuring Mods and Rockers fighting on the beaches and promenades of England, the Rockers on their BSA’s, Triumphs and Nortons; the Mods on their Vespas and Lambrettas. Their conflicts hit the headlines not only in this country but throughout Europe and beyond. But there were other Lambretta boys who never made News at Ten and I was one. On my 16th birthday, my maternal grandparents handed me £100 and told me to use it wisely. I did. I wandered down the street and bought a second hand Lambretta SX200 from a local centre half of ill repute. I would have tried to haggle the price down but thought better of it. Back then if you saw a young man with missing teeth, a broken nose and concussion you could have a good bet that it was a local centre forward who had recently played against him. His name will stay anonymous...but every ex footballer aged between 60 and 75 will know exactly who it is It had a Union Jack seat. I had a Union Jack crash helmet. Some people thought I looked cool... the great majority thought I looked like a t**t. I’ve never been fitter than when I owned that Lambretta; I pushed it further than I rode it!! I had a beautiful girlfriend at the time who lived

30

in Heage Road In Ripley. Sadly she was somewhat less beautiful when she eventually dumped due to the fact that every time time I leaned forward to kiss her goodnight I cracked the bridge of her nose with the peak on my patriotic helmet. My best mate also bought an SX200. By this time I was an experienced rider having had mine 3 days...so I decided to take him on his first run out. All was going well until we got to the first traffic lights and, as I stopped at the red he came hurtling by on the pavement and smashed into a pile of builders sand. I’d taught him how to start it but omitted to explain where the brakes were. We were The Other Lambretta Boys!! More next month.

Look After Yourself In all the advice, warnings and other information being fed to us about Covid 19 from the government and health officials, one thing conspicuously missing has been how to balance our own immune systems and strengthen our bodies In all the advice, warnings and other information being fed to us about Covid 19 from the government and health officials, one thing conspicuously missing has been how to balance our own immune systems and strengthen our bodies. Surely, in amongst all the scary stuff about wearing face masks and constant hand washing, it would have been useful to show people that changing diets and eating more healthily could be a major influencer in how they react to the virus? Perhaps someone, somewhere, decided that it would be too difficult for us to understand. Perhaps it was easier to try and keep everyone frightened and in face coverings instead of offering useful dietary advice? Or perhaps I’m being a conspiracy theorist? Doctors and scientists agree that you cannot BOOST your immune system – that simply isn’t possible. What you can do however is boost your physical health by eating healthily, exercising, and getting enough sleep. Becoming physically fitter and healthier gives your body and immune system a fighting chance should you be exposed to Covid 19. In other words, you may still catch it, but you have a better chance of not becoming seriously unwell. The standard UK diet, heavy on processed foods, ‘beige’ carbs, and sugar laden foods is not conducive to a healthy body. Consider switching to a more ‘Mediterranean’ way of eating – this does not however mean eating vast amounts of pasta! Cutting out processed food and cooking from scratch with fresh ingredients is the key to eating well. Ditch the low fat idea and embrace using ‘good fats’ like olive oil and butter. Up

40

your fish intake and decrease red meat consumption. Include plenty of green leafy vegetables (ideally half your plate should be vegetables) nuts, seeds, and legumes. Cut out (or greatly limit) white bread, pasta, potatoes, and rice and DITCH the sweet stuff! Sugar is one of the most inflammatory substances we can put into our body! Move more! You don’t have to join a gym to get fitter. Go for walks, use the stairs instead of lifts, set your mobile or wearable device to remind you to get of your bum every hour or so. Dance – as well, or as badly as you like. Just move more and your body will thank you. Sleep isn’t just a time for us to relax after our busy days, it is also the time our bodies can set about repairing and renewing and our brains can process and store memories. Sleep deprivation, particularly when not enough REM and deep sleep occurs, can cause physical problems. We all know how groggy we feel and how badly we perform after a bad night’s sleep! Everyone has different sleep requirements though, so figure out what works best for you and make sure you get it.

Look after your body so it can fight infections and stay healthy… make it your priority in 2021. These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. GARDENS

Gardener’s Calendar You may have been tempted into sowing some seeds indoors – and why not - but annual flowers such as nasturtiums and foxglove can be grown from seed outdoors now – and you can start bring your indoor seedlings out (during the day) to get them hardened off. When putting seeds directly into the garden, it’s important to be sparing – about a finger’s width apart per seed in a shallow drill – you can use a cane to create the drill according to the depth instructions on the packet. If you over-fill the drill you risk the plants damping off due to overcrowding – and effectively you’re wasting seed. The earth should be crumbled to a fine tilth and not too wet. Cover with fine soil or a peat free compost and then with fleece. This will hopefully keep the soil warm, but also stop pigeons and other birds using your seed drill as a takeaway. You can secure the fleece with sticks or by spading the edge down.

r

If you want a head-start with planting it’s absolutely okay to go for plug plants from a garden centre or online – not everyone wants to grow from seed. Just make sure they’re kept in the right conditions on the container until it’s safe for them to go out. Daffodils should be deadheaded after flowering but allow the foliage to die back naturally – no tying it in knots.

TOP TIP! Spike your lawn with a garden fork or spike shoes to give the root of the grass room to breathe 06/11/2018 18:16

Peak time for the Thrushes As winter has gently drifted into springtime change is in the air for the thrush family. Winter thrushes, the fieldfares and redwings from the far north, are Fieldfare moving back to their Scandinavian breeding grounds; and very soon the chattering flocks of fieldfares, the Vikings of the thrush family, will have left us for another year. The diminutive redwing is beautifully marked but altogether more reserved and refined than the fieldfare which is both gregarious and yet aggressive to other thrushes. Fieldfares and sometimes mistle thrushes too, will defend a favoured apple-tree or berry bush against all comers. Pausing in their feeding these birds flare their tail feathers and wings to vigorously pursue would-be intruders. They need high-energy food like berries to protect from the winter chill and to prepare for the long haul homeward; stopping off to re-fuel on coastal sea buckthorn before the North Sea crossing. Redwings will often feed under stands of beech trees and oaks as they pick through the damp leaf-litter. They will also forage under dense rhododendron bushes and will visit gardens. In the movement north, these birds are joined by many of the European blackbirds that overwintered with us; often in gardens and local woods. The resident birds are already well on with breeding and are altogether more territorial, and it is the continental migrants that you see in groups. Take a trip to the seaside in autumn and you will see them flying in off the sea Male Blackbird almost touching the wave-tops. The local birds are now in full song and delivering a gorgeous chorus at both dawn and dusk. The blackbird is arguably the most accomplished of all our song birds, but the other members of the thrush family are pretty good too. Quite large and rather grey in colour, mistle thrushes sing loudly from tree-tops and have been doing so since February. Their song is very loud but rather

limited and unvarying. Their cousin is the smaller song thrush which is much softer and warmer coloured and has a prettier song. However, the song thrush is still no match for the blackbird. Its tune, delivered beautifully and loudly, often from the mid branches of a big tree or from a roof-top, is a single note repeated three times and then another slightly different also three times. The song Redwing thrush is also a great friend of the gardener as they love to feast on snails. They have developed the knack of cracking open the hard snail shells by bashing them on to rocks until the protective case is broken and then consuming the innards. The evidence of the song thrush feasting is the stone (known as an anvil) and the scattering of shell fragments. Examination will show which snail species the thrush has been eating. So as the redwings and fieldfares depart, the resident mistle thrushes, song thrushes and blackbirds join in the ever-louder chorus at the start and then the end of the day. Soon the summer visitors will arrive and join the general hubbub.
