Hi Readers, This month I’m not going to talk about the dreaded ‘C’ word and I’m also not going to mention any bingo words, such as ‘restrictions’, ‘lockdown’, ‘rule of 6’ etc etc. It hasn’t gone away, it has affected everybody’s lives in one way or another, we shouldn’t be complacent but that said, I, like many of you, want my life back! And this month has seen the return of the shops. I’m sure that you’re all aware by now that I am passionate about small business and that it is synonymous with ‘Shopping local’, which has never been more important than currently. Many of our local businesses have been unable to open and as such trade. The stress that they have endured trying to keep the wheels on, has at times been too much to bear and many shops & businesses, big and small, have fallen along the way. Having felt the pain ourselves to some degree (although we were fortunate enough to limp along from home), the people in these industries are my absolute heroes. The adaptability, resilience and fortitude that every business owner has shown, should be celebrated and the very least we can do is support them in their comeback. Liam and I popped down to our local market during the opening week on a Saturday and met the traders. I may have mentioned this before, but when I was a kid, I had a stint on my cousin’s cheese stall and it proper gave me the bug! I love markets, carboots, fairs etc and I really love trading on them. Having spoken with many of the traders, we found such a mixed bag between, longevity, products sold, whether they kept

running throughout lockdowns and how they had to adapt but what was apparent was the resolve of all these people to carry on. It was also wonderful to see a couple of start up businesses that started trading through lock-down and are working hard to build a business from it. I truly think that through dark times, opportunities arise and sometimes, we talk more about what we’ve lost than the successes that we have gained. I would urge anyone who spots an opportunity, to grab it with both hands! In other news and in the same vein, local elections – use your vote and use it wisely and don’t try and read anything into that other than – we only get a say if we turn up and vote, irrespective of your persuasion! We did want to run a feature about all the local elections etc but decided against it for fear of vitriol from the keyboard warriors who assume my position without question! I’m off to enjoy the sunshine and visit some local independent traders #shoplocal ….it’s our future!!

drink is getting closer. I can’t wait!

Castleton & its Caverns - Continued Part 5 - Blue John If you’ve been reading the previous articles in this series, you’ll have spotted that a common vein running through them (pun absolutely intended) has been Blue John…but what exactly Is Blue John? In unromantic terms, it is a mineral, a form of fluorspar (also known as fluorite) with the chemical composition CaF2. Fluorspar is not an uncommon mineral, in fact it is found all over the world, but Castleton is the ONLY place Blue John is found. Blue John, despite the name, is not really blue! The stone is actually banded, with stripes of an almost purplish grey blue, through to white and yellow, occasionally even red and a very deep purple are present. Rumours abound that the Romans, who had a small fort in nearby Brough (Navio in Roman times, meaning ‘on the river’) discovered the mineral and used it to create decorative cups and urns 2000 years ago. It was even said that a couple of vessels unearthed in Pompeii were made of Blue John from Castleton; something later proved to be untrue, but a good story nevertheless! There isn’t any hard archaeological fact to corroborate Romans finding and using Blue John, however, as veins of the mineral could be found at ground level (it’s often how later miners traced underground deposits) then I personally would imagine that the odd foot soldier or so would have picked up a chunk in passing. Actual mining of the mineral didn’t really begin until the mid-1700s when it became fashionable in the upper classes to have something made from Blue John. From fireplaces to pieces of

jewellery and everything in between, the mineral was mined extensively and Castleton and surround villages became a centre for crafts people working with the stone. The earliest dated example of decorative Blue John from Castleton is from 1762 in Kedleston Hall, near Derby, where there are Blue John panels mounted in a marble fireplace surround designed by Robert Adam. The boom time for Blue John lasted until the end of the Victorian era when it fell out of favour, and instead of being mined to create beauty, it was diverted to the steel industry where it was used as flux. And the name - Blue John? It depends on who you talk to, or what you read! The most common (and plausible) explanation is that the mineral was exported to France, where bleu, jaune means blue, yellow – a reasonable description of the banded mineral. Another plausible explanation comes from Cornwall! Cornish miners worked in the mines from the 1740s and in the Cornish language there is a word bleujenn (in Old Cornish blodon) meaning a flower, bloom, or blossom…I like the idea of the veins of mineral being called blooms! You can buy smaller items of Blue John in Castleton, but if you want one of the big pieces you better start saving, as they fetch into the thousands! These articles are researched and written by Laura Billingham, a local content writer and author. Laura moved to the Peak District several years ago to pursue her passion for writing. Book Review Lots of people seem to have found an increased interest in nature and the countryside during the past year, whether it’s been through TV programmes like Springwatch which have kept us in touch with what’s happening in the big wide world outside our own four walls, or more awareness of global warming or what happens when we don’t balance human needs with what the planet can take. So James Rebanks’ books about his family farm in Cumbria seem to reflect an emerging mood to see if we can make things better. He wrote The Shepherd’s Life back in 2015 and followed this with English Pastoral: An Inheritance, published last year. Both are beautiful, unsentimental, passionate tales of a tough way of life which deserves to be taken heed of. The author is the son of a shepherd, who was the son of a shepherd and the family has lived and worked farms around the Lake District for four generations. They live by the seasons and farming is not something they do for a living, it is their life. They work through Christmas and birthdays, the children grow up knowing things that city kids can’t hope to learn – including that you need a “get up – get out” mentality , as in get out into the outdoors, and the first rule is to look after the animals and the land. Mr Rebanks may be a born farmer, but he’s also a born writer with a fantastic eye for the beauty of the country. This isn’t All Creatures Great and Small, there’s no whimsy, instead it leaves you with a real appreciation of the fells and the people who work them – and of the lessons we maybe need to learn if we are to improve our time here.

Charity Begins at Home! While many of us are undoubtedly struggling financially during these repeated lockdowns, spare a thought for small local charities who rely totally on funding from the public in order to survive. Many of their usual fund raising events rely on people being able to get together: coffee mornings, cake and bake sales, bring and buys etc, and these haven’t been able to go ahead for months now. That’s potentially a LOT of money NOT passing to the charity. Other fund raisers like sponsored walks, sky dives and the like, have also had to be scrapped, or at least postponed. Add to this the fact, that according to a 2019 report by CAF (Charites Aid Foundation) the number of people in the UK who regularly donate to charities has fallen consistently for 3 years, and you’ll understand why so many charities are struggling. There are things we can do to support our favourite charities that we CAN do from home in lockdown and that don’t cost us a penny… For example, when you shop via Amazon there is a way to ensure that a small percentage of everything you spend is automatically donated to a charity of your choice. There are a few things to remember: 1) you need to shop via smile. amazon.co.uk not the usual website address (it’s exactly the same!) 2) you have to pick your charity and click to choose it 3) your charity needs to register themselves in order to benefit. If you can’t find them on the list of registered charities TELL them about the website and get them to sign up!

portal. It’s easier than I’ve just made that sound – the hard part is remembering to use the portal rather than shopping directly! Along the same lines, some banks (Starling for example) have a facility where you ‘round up’ the cost of your card/online purchase and the excess is deposited in a savings pot within your account, e.g. something costs £5.60, the vendor gets that amount, 40p goes into the ‘pot’ and your account shows you have spent £6.00. After a certain amount of time you could then pay that pot over to your chosen charity. You probably won’t even notice the 1p, 5p, 10p round ups but it could build into a nice amount over time. A few ideas here to help you help your charity of choice at this tricky time, it’s also worth simply checking in to see if there’s anything else you can do to help. Some charities often need volunteers to simply pick up the phone and have a natter with one of their service users. A simple way to help but one that could make all the difference to someone feeling isolated and alone. Support Local Businesses! The ‘pandemic’ may not be over yet - actually it may never be completely over, as viruses are pesky wee blighters that continually adapt and change - but at least we can now get out and about with a little more freedom. Shopping is one of the things that many people say they have missed during the repeated lockdowns. Supermarket food shopping and online browsing doesn’t hold a candle to mooching round actual shops…well for some people anyway! Evidence of this ‘must go shopping syndrome’ (MGSS) was all over the news when the restrictions were lifted, with multiple images of people queuing to get in the likes of Primark, other city centre department stores and out of town retail parks. Great for those stores (and their shareholders!) but what about the small traders on your local high streets. The one man (and woman) bands who have struggled to survive during the crises, often with very little help from government. Some of these small local retail outlets may have managed to stay open during lockdown, the ones providing essential services anyway, please don’t let them down now the economy is reopening, by heading elsewhere! What about the cafes, hairdressers, barbers, beauticians, gift shops, and the myriad other small shops you can find in every town and village? Some haven’t survived, some may still find themselves unable to continue even though clientele is returning, and others will be testing the water - can they make up for the devastating losses of the last year, or should they give up? The people who run these businesses are our friends, often our family, they are the lifeblood of our local communities and we cannot afford to lose them and their businesses. According to website

30

www.indieretail.uk, stats show that for every £1 spent with a local, independent business, between 50p-70p circulates back into the local economy. That same pound spent in a retail chain will see a mere 5p trickling down to local level, it’s a company’s shareholders who ultimately benefit. Don’t kid yourself that your small spend won’t make a difference - it will! An article in The Independent just before Christmas 2020 said that, according to Visa, if we all spent £5 extra per week with small businesses it would help to keep them open in the long term. It should be a no brainer really! Spend your hard earned cash in your local shops whenever you can. OK, maybe you have missed a little retail therapy in a shopping mall or large city centre - indulge yourself if you must, but remember that without your custom, local shops will close. If you don’t want to see your town or village denuded of its independent retailers and becoming a ghost town of boarded up shops, you need to spend your money there. Simples. So a fiver a week in your local shops, or a decimated local high street. Your choice.

GARDENS

Gardener’s Calendar The temptation to plant your tender bedding out now is great, but really it should be left till the end of the month when the chance of frost has passed. But you can get the plants used to the great outdoors by putting them outside during the day for about a week before plonking them into their permanent garden spot. Make sure the compost or soil is moist when planting. If you have plants in the greenhouse waiting to go out, make sure they have enough ventilation and space to avoid damping off – basically the collapse of the plant – or mildew. Increase humidity in the greenhouse on hot days with a water spray which will stop spider mites attacking.

r

Fruit trees planted this year need to have their blooms removed, harsh as it may seem, to make sure they establish well and give more fruit in future years. Keep on top of the weeding. We know weeds are just plants growing where you don’t want them, but they can often be thugs and will certainly be taking moisture and nutrients from your carefully nurtured seedlings.

Top Tip

Forget me nots are beautiful cheerful little spring plants, but they self-seed like mad – fine if you want them everywhere next spring. If not, pull them out, or just leave one of two in strategic spots.

Top nature tip: If trimming hedges or trees, make sure there are no nesting birds in the branches. It is actually illegal, as well as being awful for the birds.

May flowers in the Peak 2021 Late spring into early summer sees our woodland flowers come to a spectacular peak. Swarms of bluebells have taken over from the wood anemones and will Wild Garlic merge with clouds of pungent wild garlic flowers and greater stitchwort too. With woods still full of dappled sunlight before the midsummer closure of the canopy throws everything into shade, the flowers dominate the senses in terms of both colour and fragrance. The sounds of spring birds in a rich chorus provide a backdrop to a seasonal feast of nature’s extravaganza. At this time of year the woods are busy places with birds supporting broods of youngsters and mammals like badgers and foxes with youngsters too. For the flowers this is the time, indeed a short window of opportunity, to attract vital pollinating insects and thus to set seed. The clouds of bluebells for example, are attended by bumblebees, honey bees, and hoverflies in abundance. Within a few months the woods will be dark, the ground floor dry, and the spring flowers merely a distant memory until the next year. However, there is a rather secret life active in the old woods. As the trees like oak and birch burst into life they are followed by a host of hungry insects, the larvae of myriad moths that feed on oak especially. Indeed, the oak is famed for supporting hundreds of other species, mostly insects which either live in it or feed on it. It is these insect larvae i.e. caterpillars Anemone that parent birds gather to feed to their growing offspring. The birds depend on the insect larvae and the insects depend on the great oak trees; and thus the circle of life goes around. Birds like blue tits and great tits have their annual breeding patterns carefully synchronised to match the available caterpillars. To make matters even more complicated, the oak’s leaves contain toxic chemicals called ‘tannins’ to help protect them against insect predation i.e. caterpillars, and

these are timed to reach their highest levels when caterpillars are most abundant. Of course with climate change many of these interconnected cycles are getting out of sync and that can cause problems. The so-called ‘ancient woodlands’ are the richest in terms of their rare and unique biodiversity, and their tree canopies dominated by oaks and sometimes Woodland Flowers by planted beech trees, are host to diverse insect faunas. However, at the present time and for a variety of reasons these insects are under pressure and many populations across the whole of Europe have plummeted. If this continues then it may mean problems for the woodland birds which need insects as food for their young, and also for the woodland flowers which need to be pollinated. It appears that the ‘usual suspects’ for causing these problems are habitat loss and habitat change, and climatic shifts, plus various pesticide chemicals used in modern farming. Steps are now being taken to limit or remove the worst of these but only time will tell if nature can bounce back. In the meantime, take a walk in the local woods and enjoy! Primrose
