From the Editor Dear Readers,
Sarah has joined our Voice and Artliff team this month on our customer account management side and, as we haven’t scared her off yet, I think she might quite like us! Lisa has already scheduled some time to work on her little avatar, so that’s it now, no backsies!
Well, firstly, the whole team (with the exception of Paul, who had it in January), fell foul of the dreaded Covid. We all said that we’ve done so well to dodge it up to this point but we’ve all had varying levels of illness with it; our golden oldies from the over 50 club were hit with the worst symptoms and we lost them for 5 days (alongside our young gun, Hayleigh). Danielle made a valiant effort but fell at Beeches Brook and took to her bed from Tuesday to Friday! However, despite sharing a small little portacabin and van with them, our distribution team swatted it away like a fly and had no ill effects whatsoever. Liam and I had, what we thought was a cold! It was only when everyone else went down that we realised that it may not have been a cold!! Anyway, we’re all back & fighting fit now, which is a far cry from what the words ‘we’ve had covid’ used to do to us all 2yrs ago!! We’d have had a plague cross placed on the outside of building!

her falling foul of the sofa & tellybox as she was last spotted mushing some huskies somewhere in the UK!
What do I have to talk to you about this month? Lots has happened but I can’t fit it all in!
Anyway, now we’re all covid free, we thought it was time to expand our team a little. But firstly, we lost Maggi to retirement! I didn’t question her decision based on the fact that she was so busy in her day-to-day life that she barely had time to work! So, I don’t worry about

In other news, May brings about my youngest cousins wedding. He is about 7yrs younger than me and I can remember holding him when he was newly born. Cute as a button he was, age isn’t always kind to everyone (only joking ) but he has bagged himself the loveliest partner in crime as his soul mate and as self-appointed chief bridesmaid, I can’t wait to share their special day – it’s been a long time coming!!
😉
With a wedding and the holiday season beginning, I’m hoping for a quieter May but somehow, I doubt it!! See you next month, Happy Reading,
x Emily

Platinum Celebrations Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth on 6 February 1952 following the death of her father George IV. Although King George had been ill for some time, his death whilst Princess Elizabeth was on a tour of Kenya with her husband Prince Philip, must have shaken her to the core. She was a mother of two young children (Charles and Anne) and her father was a mere 56 years old when he died, in normal circumstances she could have expected him to reign for many more years, but instead she was thrust into the spotlight as Queen at the tender age of 26. The Queen’s coronation took place in Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953. The ceremony was conducted by Dr Geoffrey Fisher, Archbishop of Canterbury and, at the Queen’s request, it became the first televised coronation, viewed by more than 20 million around the globe. This coming June we are celebrating her Majesty’s 70 years as Queen, making her the longest reigning monarch not only in the UK, but placing her at number 4 in the list of the world’s longest reigning sovereigns. By the time of the Jubilee Bank Holiday on 3 June she will have moved into 3rd position, only a few days behind Rama IX of Thailand who reigned for 70 years, 126 days. To put things in perspective Rama, and the first placed long time monarch, Louis XIV of France (72 years, 110 days as king), ascended to their thrones at the age of 4 and 5 respectively! There have been momentous changes in the way we live since her Majesty became Queen. In 1952 the world was still very much living in the shadows of World War II, in the UK sugar, butter, cheese, margarine, cooking fat, bacon, meat and tea were all still rationed. TVs were still uncommon in the average household; men were very much the breadwinners (after the war years of women in the workplace); homosexuality was illegal; decimalisation hadn’t yet happened; the
4
death penalty was still in force; the race for space hadn’t yet begun; Watson and Crick hadn’t yet published their discovery of the structure of DNA, and foods like spaghetti and curry were unknown to most people! Houses had no central heating, no double glazing, no fitted kitchens with shiny time saving appliances, and owning one’s own house was not taken for granted. The average cost of a new house around 1952 (lots of house building was taking place to replace homes destroyed during the war) was £1,891 (around £65,224 in today’s money) and the average salary was £10 a week (roughly £339). In 2022 we take so much for granted, don’t we? Warm houses, hot water at the turn of a tap, a huge variety and choice of foodstuffs, eating out, holidays overseas, etc. etc… are our lives anymore content though? The only thing unchanged since 1952 is her Majesty Queen Elizabeth - raise a glass in celebration of her record breaking reign!

Sutton Heritage Society
1977 1977, The year Virginia Wade won Wimbledon. It was also the Silver Jubilee for the Queen. In Sutton, over 100 street parties, although some swapped the streets for the dryness of church halls, schools and other venues. Sandwiches, cakes, jelly and ice cream was the order of the day. Everywhere the bunting in red, white and blue, balloons, flags, crackers, serviettes, paper tablecloths, hats, trays – all adorned with the colours. Sotheby Ave had a piano outside for music to sing and dance to. Sutton Choral Society and Shirland Band got together for a concert in Sutton Centre Sports Hall. Among those present were the MP Tim Smith (Cons); Cllr Turnbull - Edmunds; Cllr Booth; and Cllr Stein. Even the music was “hand-picked” with pieces like “Long Live Elizabeth”; “Regular Royal Queen”; and a special jubilee hymn by David Chamberlain. Forty members of Sutton Harriers (ages 11-63) had a very special delivery to make. They set off on a journey to Buckingham Palace on a relay run, carrying a baton containing a message from the chairman of the council to the Queen. “To Her Most Gracious Majesty the Queen” “On behalf of Your Majesty’s loyal subjects residing in the District of Ashfield. We, the Chairman and District Councillors of the Ashfield District Council do respectfully offer to Your Majesty our warmest congratulations on this most memorable event of 1977, the Silver Jubilee year of Your Majesty’s accession”. The message was sealed with the Council’s seal and dated 6/6/1977.
The route taken by The Harriers went through Derbys, Leics, Warks, Northants, Bucks, Beds, Herts and on to London. The Club was supported in their efforts by the pilot car – a Vauxhall Chevette, from Nevilles of Sutton which was looking out for the safety of the runners, and a bus from Rainworth Travel, for the athletes throughout the journey. Stan Whetton started at the Harriers HQ at 2:30am, followed by David Horne for the next stage. The total time taken was recorded as 14hrs 20min 15sec. Names of some members taking part were given as Ray Fox, Dave Widdison, Tony Scanlon, Ivan Tomlinson, Alistair Robertson, Mike and Duncan Anthony, Gary and Mark Lucas, Gary Burnham, Neil Smith, Darren Marshall, Graham Ball, Tony Greasley, Mark Hawkins, Janey Bills, Jenny Page, Alan Lucas, Andy Wetherill, Dave and Mike Roberts, Nicky Best, Julie Sevens, Karen French, Sue Bradshaw, Mary Hewitt, Michelle Orbiston, Mark Palfreyman, John Knight, and John Cooper. At the finish, all the athletes involved ran together down the mall cheered by onlookers. Gary Lucas, Angela Dudley and club secretary John Knight were the ones to go through Buckingham Palace gates, and when John Knight had signed the visitors book it signalled the end of the marathon run of 147 miles.

STEP OUT WITH WALK FOR PARKINSON’S
Broadcaster and journalist Dave Clark is supporting Walk for Parkinson’s. “I’ve been living with Parkinson’s for 11 years now. It’s not always been easy, but I’m determined to stay positive and embrace life. Throwing myself into fundraising and awareness-raising about the condition is one of the ways I do that. Parkinson’s is the fastest growing neurological condition in the world, so finding a cure really can’t wait. Uniting with others to take part in Walk for Parkinson’s is a great way to help move us closer to that goal. Together, we can make a real difference.”

Book Review
My Mess is a Bit of a Life – yes you did read that correctly – is how author Georgia Pritchett described herself to a friend – meaning of course to say it the other way round. But then she thought, actually it makes sense that way. Her book is subtitled Adventures in Anxiety. Now you may be one of those god-like creatures who doesn’t have the Worry Worm peering over your shoulder at just about every opportunity. In that case this book is probably not for you – except perhaps to see how the other half lives and count yourself blessed. But for the rest of us mortals Ms Pritchett’s account of her life will probably give you glorious moments of recognition, amusement, entertainment and maybe the odd gulp in the throat. It’s not by any stretch a self help book. Some of her little chunks of her early life might be a bit much – after all most children can be a little out of water and strange, but as she moves into adulthood, she really starts to hit the button. And her descriptions of later family life make you think it’s no wonder she suffered from anxiety. It may not be your life, but it’s often stuff you can relate to. So, not for everyone, but it’s funny and sad at the same time. And wrapped up in a real skill for writing. As you’d expect from someone who has been writing for comedians such as Graham Norton and programmes including The Thick of It and Have I got News for You.

Without a Will, how do you know your loved ones will be taken care of in the future? Making a Will could be the most important thing you do and for most people it’s simple and straightforward. Your Will details your personal wishes (individual to you) and it gives you the peace of mind that your loved ones will be looked after in the future. This lets you get on with enjoying the other important things in life! Without a Will, it’s the law (not you) who decides what will happen to your estate and, depending on your individual circumstances, that may not be what you would choose. Why do you need a Will? Whether you are single, married, have children or not, own a property or rent, everyone should make a Will. You may think you have very little to leave, but if you think about your assets such as cars, jewellery, property and even sentimental objects, who would you choose for these to be passed on to? If you have children, you do need to have some plans in place for them, such as who would look after them, to make sure money you leave goes to them at the correct time.
Here are some important reasons to make a Will: 1. If you don’t make a Will, the law (and not you) will dictate where your money will go. It is not always certain that your spouse, or even your children, will get your money in that case. 2. It costs far more to correct the mistakes in a homemade Will than it does to prepare a properly drawn up Will in the first place. It could cost thousands to rectify an error. 3. If you have been married more than once and have children with each partner, a Will is the best way to ensure all of your children benefit how you want them to. 4. Your Will may be out of date because of a change of circumstances. Your Will needs to be reviewed regularly to ensure it says what you want it to say. 5. What happens if you die and you have young children? If the unthinkable were to happen, who would you wish to step in and be responsible for their day to day care?
Get in touch – we can help you! If you need help and advice about your Will, simply contact our experienced and friendly team 11 they will be happy to help you. on 01623 45 11 11, 16

Fancy a Cocktail? Cocktail - it’s a strange word for a mix of “mainly spirits, water, sugar, and bitters”, don’t you agree? I decided to have a look to see if there’s any traceable etymology and here’s what I found. The Egg-Cup Theory: one source of the word cocktail is said to be from the mispronunciation of the French word coquetier (pronounced cocktay in English) which means egg-cup! The story goes that in the late 18th century Antoine Amédée Peychaud, a New Orleans apothecary who invented Peychaud bitters, served brandy with these bitters in egg-cups. These teeny drinks earned the moniker coquetier which became mangled to cocktail. The Dregs Theory: In days of old (and possibly even now in less salacious drinking establishments!) a landlord would mix together the dregs of the almost empty barrels and resell the resultant mixture at a discount. This doesn’t make sense as a derivative for the word cocktail unless you know that dregs were commonly referred to as tailings, and that the tap (spigot) of a barrel was sometimes called a cock. The Horse’s Tail Theory: A horse with a docked tail was often described as a “cock tail” in the 17th century because the docked tail apparently resembled a rooster’s short spikey tail. Working horses such as those that pulled coaches, and horse used for hunting often had their tails docked for practical purposes. Thoroughbreds however did not have docked tails, meaning that if an “ordinary” horse was entered into a race its “cock tail” made it easy to spot. The connection between this theory and cocktails as drinks is pretty tenuous in my opinion. Race horses with cocked tails were sometimes noted to be friskier than undocked thoroughbreds (which seems odd) and so “cock your tail up” became a saying. Another version says that a cocked
22
tail showed a horse had been changed, in the same way that adding other ingredients to a spirit changed the drink. Horse racing and drinking go together like gin and tonic, so the theory holds that the word “cock tail” was adopted to mean an adulterated (changed) spirit. The word cocktail wasn’t really defined as we know it until 1806, when The Balance and Columbian Repository of Hudson, New York (an early newspaper) , pinned the cocktail down to what we follow today: “a stimulating liquor composed of any kind of sugar, water and bitters”. If you look online today there are literally thousands of different cocktail recipes, but the International Bartenders Association (IBA) only recognises 77 in their annual World Cocktail Competition. Tastes in cocktails varies around the world, in 2021 in the UK Just Eat for Business found that Espresso Martinis were the most popular concoction. The US seems to favour tequila based Margaritas; the French love a Mimosa; Germans apparently love a U-Boot (beer and a shot glass filled with vodka that is sunk into the glass of beer!); in Spain, Sangria takes the top spot and in Italy it’s a Bellini. What’s your favourite?

Slimming World Recipe Aubergine and Pepper Balti
Method: 1. Preheat your oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas 6. 2. Put the aubergines and peppers on a non-stick baking tray and spray with low-calorie cooking spray. Toss well and roast for 15 minutes or until the veg is soft. 3. Meanwhile, spray a non-stick saucepan with low-calorie cooking spray and place over a medium heat. Cook the onions for about 10 minutes, then add the chopped tomatoes and curry powder and cook for another 10 minutes, stirring constantly.
A vegetable curry full of flavour. You can make this vegan by swapping the yogurt for plain unsweetened soya yogurt with added calcium (though it won’t be suitable for an Extra Easy SP day).

Vintage Rambles a with raFf lake and
This is a great walk for the summer months ahead. We originally featured it in 2015 and there have been a couple of small changes but the route is great and there is a lovely mix of countryside with some cracking views. The dogs also loved this walk and even found a stream to splash around in and there was plenty of opportunity to go off lead so it got their double paw of approval. 5½ MILE CIRCULAR FROM GRASSMOOR COUNTRY PARK.
A gentle walk for you and your dog. This medium length walk should 2 1/2 hours. There are some sections of uneven terrain and a number of stiles to cross. There are a couple of busy road sections, so please take plenty of care and make sure you wear appropriate footwear for the conditions.
START: GRASSMOOR COUNTRY PARK, BIRKIN LANE, OFF B6039 BETWEEN TEMPLE NORMANTON AND GRASSMOOR. 1.
From the car park standing with your back to the road and keeping a pond on your right, continue straight ahead to join a trail. Bear right and pass a second pond on your right.
2.
After the second pond you will begin to gently descend. Upon reaching a large metal gate, take the path to the right of the gate and continue to pass through a small metal gate. After a very short distance and prior to a main road turn left onto a signposted footpath.
3.
Follow the path for a short distance and at a marker post on the edge of the golf course, bear left. At another marker post keep ahead to enter some trees with the golf course on your right and a fence on your left. Go up some steps and when the fence on your left ends, continue gently uphill keeping the golf course on your right.
4.
After passing a bunker on your right and reaching a marker post on your left, bear right to cut across the golf course, taking care for any flying golf balls! Pass through a line of trees and ‘hole 8’ on
your left and then follow the path round to the left to gently descend. Cross a gravel path and keep ahead, passing a pond on your right. Take care crossing the fairway to head to a wooden footbridge and pass by the club house and car park on your right.
13.
At the bottom of the steps, turn right keeping the hedge on your right. After a very short distance, bear left along the boundary of the field. Continue until you reach a hedgerow on your left. At this point turn 90 degrees left and then continue straight keeping the hedgerow on your right.
5.
Continue straight along the golf course driveway until reaching a main road. At the main road turn right and continue until reaching a roundabout.
14.
6.
Cross straight over the roundabout and then turn immediately left into some trees along a signposted footpath. After passing through the trees continue straight along a lane. After a short distance, the lane bends sharp left. At this point turn right through a gap to cross an open field.
With a small wooded area on your right continue over a lane and keep ahead to keep a fence on your right. Continue to pass by a pylon on your right and then head gently downhill until reaching a river. At this point turn right keeping the river on your left.
15.
Continue to pass through a wooden gate, keeping the river on your left at all times. Pass over a wooden footbridge then turn immediate right, then left and continue straight with a hedge on your left.
16.
After a short distance, the border of the field that you are in bears slightly right. At this point, continue straight for a very short distance and then turn right onto a farm track. Pass by a pylon on your right and continue along the track until reaching a main road.
17.
Turn right along the main road and cross over a dual carriageway. Continue straight for a short distance and then the main road bends around to the left. Just after the left turn, bear right along a signposted bridleway.
18.
Continue straight along the bridleway until reaching a road. Turn right along the road and head steeply downhill.
19.
When nearing the bottom of the hill and just prior to a metal fence and pond on your right, turn right. Pass immediately through a gap in the metal fence and continue to skirt around the edge of the pond which is now on your left. Cross over a wooden footbridge between two ponds and continue until you reach the car park.
7.
8.
9.
10.
11.
12.
After crossing over 4 stiles you will cross an open field whilst gently climbing uphill. Upon reaching a hedgerow stretching out ahead of you, continue straight with this hedge on your right. Where this hedgerow ends, continue straight now with a different hedge on your left. After a short distance, pass through a gap and continue straight with a hedge on both sides. Continue to cross over a stile and then cross a field with a hedge on your left. At the far side pass through a metal gate and then turn right onto a single track tarmac road. At the end of the road, turn right along a main road. After a short distance turn left through a signposted gate and into a field. Cross the field with the hedge on your left. At the far side go to the right of the houses in front of you and pass through a wooden gate into a field. Cross the field with a hedge on your left. After a short distance pass through another wooden gate and continue straight with houses on your left and a fence on your right. Where the path bends sharp left continue straight through a gap in the fence and into a field. Continue keeping the hedge on your left. Eventually cross over a double stile, cross over a main road and cross over another stile into a field. Continue straight with a hedge on your left. Where the hedge ends, continue straight towards a telegraph pole. Just beyond the telegraph pole, turn left over a stile and follow a path between two buildings to a main road. Turn left along the road for a short distance and then turn right along a single-track tarmac road that is signposted for a footpath. Cross over a dual carriageway and then turn immediate right down some steps into a field.
This walk is for illustrative purposes only. Voice Magazines Ltd takes no responsibility for anyone who chooses to follow this route and encourages all walkers to obey all byelaws and signs and to respect the area they are walking in, ensuring they pick up all dog mess and obey the countryside code at all times.

New Puppy Shopping List Adding a new furry friend into your family can be a big step, and it’s important to ensure you have the correct items at home to make the transition as smooth as possible for your pup. Here at Scarsdale, we have listed a few essential things for a shopping list: 1. Bedding • Puppies will have accidents so make sure bedding is washable! Specially made blankets like vet beds help to keep your puppy dry if they’re accident prone. Also keep size in mind as puppies can grow rapidly. • Lots of owner’s crate train puppies so they have a safe haven in the house. If you decide to do this, check they can comfortably stand up and stretch out, and seek advice on how to train them correctly.
2. Collars and Leads • Your puppy won’t be able to go for walks until it’s fully vaccinated, but they should wear a collar with a name tag. Also consider if you’ll be using a collar or harness for walks, so training can gradually be introduced. Also, bear is mind the breed, for example short nosed dogs like pugs would benefit from harness walking to minimise pressure on the windpipe.
3. Toys • Playing with toys is an important part of your puppy’s training and development. Don’t cut corners here and use household objects! Sticks can splinter and cause injuries, whilst socks can cause blockages of the gastrointestinal tract.
• It’s a good idea to consider toy size too, a chew toy for a Chihuahua may be too small and soft for a Labrador. Feel free to seek advice if you’re unsure!
4. Food and Water Bowls • There’s a wide range available, with some even designed for particular breeds. For example, bowls designed to slow down eating, or to stop long eared dogs’ ears dangling in water and food!
6. Dog Appeasing Pheromone • This is made by Adaptil. It’s a synthetic copy of the natural comforting pheromone released by the mother to reassure her puppies, so it’s ideal to help your puppy settle into your new home. Do you have a new pup? Scarsdale provide a 4-week puppy training course, providing a fun and safe environment for your puppy to learn. Each week will guide you through multiple topics to help your puppy become a well mannered and confident dog! if you’d like to book onto our next course why not give us a call - 01332 554422

DAD’S ARMY IN THE NAPOLEONIC ERA PART TWO
A Prototype Dad’s Army
Bathing a pr Bathing a pr • Wet rooms
As with many part-time soldiers, it is easy to be disparaging about troops that see no action. So, there’s a strong tradition of ridiculing these wouldbe soldiers, the original Dad’s Army, if you like. They signed an agreement like any other conscripted soldier – a rare 1803 volunteers’ paper isn’t something you see too often. There were certainly comical elements to their history. They were often satirised in contemporary prints about their heightened concern with their uniforms and distinctly un-martial qualities. The Loyal Hackney Volunteers’ uniform included a bearskin hat with a feather, and bespoke buttons inscribed with “Loyal Hackney Volunteers”. Volunteers chose more expensive cloth and colours for their coats too – the Sussex Yeomanry selected a dark green jacket with black velvet collar and cuffs. There’s good evidence in local archives for the Volunteers spending a lot of time, and money, on their uniforms. An example comes from Carlisle record office, concerning an officer who had been rather ambitious with the measurements for his uniform breeches and had to send them back as they were too tight for him to wear.

Their outward appearance, at least for a few days a year, and public display in uniform became the means to do this. Outside of the big garrisons in London, Edinburgh, and Dublin, parades were rare before the 1790s, but this changed during the war. After 1815 these part-time soldiers were not needed anymore, and units were disbanded. Gradually they passed from an ever-present component of British life into obscurity. The relief at the ending of the wars in 1815, and the public celebrations and memorials focusing on the great battles of the conflict, meant that the Volunteers were largely ignored.

Mansfield HC
The season behind and the summer ahead Mansfield Hockey Club are a friendly and competitive club, based at Kingsway Park in Kirkby in Ashfield. We cater to members of all abilities and of ages 13+, with our oldest member being 78 years old!
Despite some laudable results across the club the biggest victory, for everyone involved in hockey, is the completion of a full season after Covid-19 wrecked the previous two. As a club, a fantastic amount of work has gone into keeping it all going and a huge amount of credit goes to the coaches, the captains and all the team behind the scenes, organising pitches, umpires, friendlies and all of the other vital admin. This has put the club in a great position, with a thriving youth programme flooding the squads with quality players, who are a credit to the club and their coaches. This has complimented a friendly and enthusiastic group of players whose commitment has borne out through the pandemic. Moving forwards the focus is on keeping fit and getting ready for next season. For those interested there are still many opportunities to play, with masters tournaments for the more ‘experienced’ players and an array of summer
6-a-side tournaments. For those who want a little time off, the regular season will return all too soon. In previous years the club has run social hockey sessions with pre-season training returning at the back end of summer. The return to hockey is always one approached with a mix of enthusiasm and trepidation. Whilst we may have missed playing, we know we will have to pay for any time off with aches, pains and lots of red-faced gasping for air, which will have us asking why we stopped in the first place. But it’s all part of the fun and the reason we all keep coming back is the enjoyment of a game on a Saturday and the friendship and camaraderie of our teammates. If you fancy joining the club and want to know a little more, or you just want to give it a go, all the contact information is below. Just drop us a line, you’ll get a warm welcome!
We are always on the lookout for new members so please contact us on any of the following channels if you are interested in joining! www.facebook.com/mansfieldhc

After:
Since leaving school, I’ve had a couple of jobs in which I devoted lots of time and was always driven by targets. These jobs were fantastic, I could always put the extra hours in working late nights and weekends. All this changed when I became a father, I wanted to spend more time with my partner and our two daughters.
At the start you need to work on building each round up to a reasonable level, now the aim is to grow further and expand my rounds. I aim to provide a top quality, reliable and friendly service. I like to ensure all my customers know exactly who I am and when I’ll be coming to clean their windows.
Out of nowhere, window cleaning came onto my radar, a chance meeting with Andy the franchisor of Deluxe Window Cleaning as I sat in his home on trying to sell him a security alarm. We went completely off topic talking about our backgrounds and I became intrigued to see how a fully established, successful window cleaning business works. After going through the details, I had made my decision to sign up that evening and haven’t looked back since.
I look forward to hearing from you and making you my next satisfied customer.
Elliot Greenhill
I am now my own boss; I decide when I start and finish my day and plan my entire diary to what is best for me and my family. So far, I have gathered enough customers to keep me busy, but it would be fantastic to get as many local customers as possible to reduce travel time.

Gardener’s Calendar
May is traditionally planting out time when the tender bedding finds its home for the summer.
Later in the month is probably better unless you’re in a sheltered spot, as late frosts can be lethal. Baskets and containers do well with good quality compost, a slow release fertiliser and water retaining crystals for dry periods. But don’t overdo it with the latter otherwise it will look like you’ve got a mass of frogspawn among your flowers. Wall growing or ground cover plants such as aubrietia and alyssum can now be given a haircut after flowering to encourage new growth and perhaps more flowers. If you’ve bought tomato seedlings or even those little pot versions don’t be tempted to transplant them into their final growbag or pot yet. Toms like tight shoes, their roots don’t thrive on large amounts of compost and their roots can rot. So, leave it a while.
Top Wildlife Tip:
If you like forget me nots, leave them be after flowering. Otherwise pull at least some out. They self-seed like mad and will take over next year’s spring garden.
If you’re trimming hedges, make sure there’s no birds’ nests inside – they often nest in even quite low hedges.
