Hello friends,

I hope 2020 has started out well and that you’re looking forward to a year filled with art and creativity.

Your Art Center has a lot of fantastic exhibitions, classes, workshops, performances and other programming lined up, so, no matter what your tastes are, there’s going to be something you’ll enjoy, or find intriguing or challenging. We’re trying to make sure there’s something for everyone. Because we believe that art is for everyone. In the coming months, I hope you’ll find something that piques your interest.

Coming up in April we’re presenting Paint the Town – A Night in Paris, an Art Center Benefit sponsored by US BANK. It’s what we used to call the Annual Fine Art Auction. We changed it up a little bit last year so that it’s more fun and entertaining. There are still live and silent auctions. Oh, and a secret auction. What’s a secret auction? Well if we told you, it wouldn’t be a secret, now would it? Honestly, it’s pretty simple. It’s basically just like a silent auction, except that you can’t see what other people have bid on an item. The evening will include amazing food by The Art Center Guild, some Frenchinspired cocktails, our auctions, live performances from Broadway shows, a champagne toast and dessert at the end of the night, and the opportunity to support The Art Center! Coming up in June is our Contemporary Clay Biennial. We all look forward to this exhibition which features artwork from some of the country’s finest ceramic artists. The Juror for Contemporary Clay 2020 will be nationally known ceramicist Bill Van Gilder.

Also in June will be a Collage Society exhibition. We’re thrilled to be able to once again host the Collage Society; their work never ceases to wow visitors.

July will bring our annual Student and Instructor exhibition. Anyone who has taken or taught a class or workshop at The Art Center during the previous 12 months is welcome to exhibit work in this exhibition. It’s always eye-opening and exciting to see what our students and instructors have created. Also in July will be a show we’re calling “Cutting Edge.” It will feature pieces from our permanent collection, which were cutting edge when they were created. You’ll see exhibitions from our permanent collection, plus shows by The Brush and Palette Club, The Clay Arts Guild, Terry Shepherd, impressionist Ned Axthelm, emerging artist Nichole Montanez, and many more. That’s just a few of our upcoming exhibits, and I haven’t even touched on all the classes and workshops for kids and adults of all ages, abilities, and skill levels. Or performances, such as The Art Center Guild’s Music in the Grapevines summer concert series. Or the theatre offerings by The Theatre Project. Or events such as the Holiday Art and Craft Fair, Demo Night, or our Lecture Series.

There are also a lot of fun new programs and partnerships in the works, plus a surprise or two, including a pretty big surprise that we’ll be announcing in the next few months. I hope you’ll take advantage of all that your Art Center has to offer. And I hope you’ll spread the love by inviting a friend or family member to join you at a First Friday opening, or a lecture or concert. Chances are, you know people who don’t know about The Art Center, and you can change their life for the better by helping them find one of Western Colorado’s hidden gems – The Art Center! Lee Borden, Executive Director

A note from Terry Shepherd: In honor of Charlie Roy, who passed away on January 13, 2020, after a lengthy illness. Charlie left a legacy as an avid supporter of The Art Center and of the arts in general. A former member of the Board of Trustees of The Art Center, Charlie and his wife, Cheryl, were significant underwriters of the 2008 rebuilding of the Ceramics Studio large gas kiln. Their donation of $2000 in honor of their deceased son, Luke Roy, was instrumental in inspiring others to donate funds to finance the building of the current kiln which was completed in 2008 by Terry Shepherd and is still in use today. We miss Charlie and his passionate and caring spirit.

March 6 – April 5 Opening Reception Friday, March 6, 6:30-9pm The beauty of nature has served as the inspiration for countless aesthetic interpretations of its majesty. Artists obsessed with its brilliance render its glory and capture its subtlety. In the hands of an artist, a brush moves like light; dancing on still water, mountains appear from bleached white canvas, and color fills the void that once inhabited an empty space. This March The Art Center presents our stunning surroundings with a collection of works from its Permanent Collection depicting interpretations of the landscape.

Musings In 2019 we witnessed miracles unfold through the gift that creativity offers. During this time, the Clay Arts Guild, as a special fundraiser, gave a 100% donation from the sale of works to go towards Art Center programs; The Art Center received national recognition from Ovation TV for its dedication to the arts; and CMU paired with The Art Center to honor a legend in the Art Community, Jac Kephart. With the Passing of Kephart there has been reason to mourn, but the act of celebrating his life has given us reason to be thankful. As we embark on another year, let us carry our dreams with us, ensuring that the impulse to create is nurtured once again.
