Hello Friends! As I have so often said in the past, volunteers are the heart and soul of any nonprofit, and The Art Center is no exception. In the last issue of Art Matters, I talked a bit about The Art Center Guild, a remarkable volunteer arm of our organization. This month, I’d like tell you a little bit about another group of dedicated volunteers–The Art Center’s Board of Trustees. And I would like to introduce you to the five newest board members. As you probably know, The Art Center is governed by a Board of Trustees. These trustees are voted into office to serve a three-year term, and they may serve no more than two consecutive terms. During these three or six years in office, the board and their self-elected officers provide governance for The Art Center and are a crucial part of the fund development efforts of our organization. Board members attend monthly board meetings which generally take between ninety minutes to two or three hours. They each serve on at least one, and often two or three (or more!), important standing and ad hoc committees which each meet monthly. Our board members do far more than spend time at board and committee meetings. They help out in many other ways. Several board members are also members of The Art Center Guild. Others tend bar at First Friday openings or at performances. They sell memberships at events, performances and festivals. They do so much. In fact, the day after our big benefit in May, the staff showed up early the next morning to start cleaning and organizing (everyone was tired and dragging a bit), and one of our board members showed up early, on a Sunday morning, clapped his hands together and said, “What needs to be done?” It’s that type of commitment and enthusiasm that runs rampant through The Art Center Board–and, they do it all as volunteers. When people think of nonprofit volunteers, they often overlook the gift of time, energy, and professional knowledge that board members offer. Being the governing body of such an important nonprofit institution as The Art Center is no small matter. But beyond that, they are also instrumental in helping push fund development initiatives forward in order to help keep the organization financially stable. They use their personal and business networks to encourage new and continued financial support. And, in fact, many of The Art Center’s most generous personal supporters have been, and continue to be members of the Board of Trustees. Currently, our board is made up of sixteen members. Jeremy R Franklin, Ronya Anna, Keri Henning, Lt. Col. Jack Griggs, Cathy Zippert, Dr. Michael Neste, Mykan White, Anita Pisciotte, and Kendra McDaniel are joined this year by Joseph Gonzales (an art educator and gallery owner), Karen Moore (an interior designer and retired local business owner), Pavia Justinian (an important up-andcoming local artist), Lynne O’Connell (a retired insurance trainer and executive), and Sheri Ray (a graphic design, marketing, public relations, and fund-raising events professional). These sixteen people volunteer their time, give freely of their professional experience and expertise, support The Art Center financially, provide governance, and act as advocates and cheerleaders for The Art Center day in and day out. So, to all current and former members of the Board of Trustees, THANK YOU for everything you do. You help make The Art Center the amazing institution it is. Lee Borden, Executive Director 4|

Remembering Jac Kephart "Art is a wonderful gift." It could be said that human life is as unique and vast as the lights in the night sky. Every so often, one light shines brighter than the rest; that light was Jac Kephart. On May 16, 2019, we said goodbye to local legend Jac Kephart. Jac was an influential member of the arts community and continually showed his support to numerous organizations including The Art Center and Colorado Mesa University. Jac was a major supporter of the arts, and The Art Center. He volunteered as a member of The Art Center Board of Trustees, he gave one hundred percent donations to The Art Center’s annual fine art auction every year for more than a decade, and served on several Art Center committees including the Jac and his wife, Pat, ran Jac’s House of auction/benefit committee and the Flowers in Grand Junction, Colorado. exhibition committee. Jac worked as a florist during the day and created art by night until his career He mentored countless artists of all ages, as a painter became fully sustainable. and inspired artists and art lovers across the country. Jac attended Mesa State College, now Colorado Mesa University, with aspirations of attaining a degree in architecture. However, his talent as a fine art painter led his life in a different direction. Early on, Jac explored experimental abstract compositions, but his ability as a representational painter caused him to veer towards the creation of traditional painted landscapes. In the 1990s, he made the leap back to the abstract and nonrepresentational art he had experimented with in the past. This injected a renewed enthusiasm for art making into Jac’s life. He was in search of transcendence. His work conveyed 8 | REMEMBERING JAC KEPHART

things marvelous, those things that are indescribable, things beyond words. Jac compared his work to the discovery of Tutenkhamun’s tomb where a dimly lit room revealed the presence of precious metals and stones. “I want my pieces to leave an impression of something interesting and beautiful that you can’t quite relate to…That is how I want the viewer to see my work–the glint of colors, golds, coppers and silvers, and different materials without perceiving the definite shape of an object.” Jac’s work has a textural quality with strong geometric lines intermingled with flowing organic shapes. Layers of stratified paint and metal appear as if they are carved into the surface. His work has a sculptural quality and projects off of the surface of Birchwood panels that are draped in folds of earth tones balanced by small layers of saturated paint. Distinctive horizon lines with deep grooves through the surface give his artwork added depth and balance.
Jac's work is in art collections across the world, and he is represented by Ratliff Gallery (Sedona, AZ), Deloney Newkirk Gallery (Santa Fe, NM), and Breckenridge Gallery (Brekcenridge, CO).Jac donated works to the Permanent Collection of the Western Colorado Center for the Arts and Colorado Mesa University’s Wubben Hall Math and Science Building. Jac's work and passion for art speaks for itself in many ways, but he described it best when he said ,“I am not documenting subjects or making statements; I’m creating original creations and trying to make an emotional connection. I want the viewer to connect with their viewing experience and be happy when they look at my paintings. I’ll paint for the rest of my life always searching for that one ultimate creation-–art is a wonderful gift.”

Metalworkers
October 4 – November 16 Opening Reception October 4, 6:30-9pm The Art Center is turning up the heat with the metalworkers’ exhibition! We are pleased to welcome metalworkers Sam Speir, Alaina Bittner, Zach Tabb, Mike Allen, Pavia Justinian, and Amanda Davis to this dynamic sculptural exhibition. Mike Allen works with twisted and hammered metals to fashion functional art creations. Alaina Bittner brings the minute details of the natural world to our attention by enlarging a miniscule creature or detail, giving the viewer a new appreciation of the small elements in nature. Pavia Justinian is a mixed media artist whose focus is on figurative works. Justinian's artist's statement notes, “I see objects as shapes and line
that want to fit together–and I weave them seamlessly into female figures…” Sam Speir–sculptor, printmaker, and conceptualist–combines elements from each artform to create stunning forms that discuss the concepts of mass media and media’s progression throughout time. Zach Tabb takes man-made objects and subjects them to the process of time. Tabb speaks to this in his artist's statement — “I am creating material representations of nature reclaiming the man-made world.” Amanda Davis is a mixed media artist who incorporates found objects and metalwork into stunning figurative sculptures. Don’t miss this dynamic exhibition of local sculptors within our community.

Annual Art & Craft Fair Friday, November 22, 6-8:30pm Saturday & Sunday, November 23 & 24, 9am-4pm ‘Twas the night before Art and Craft Fair, when all through the Center The tables were arranged and sprinkled with glitter. Booths were arranged around the center with care, In hopes that holiday shoppers soon would be there; The guild ladies were nestled all snug in their beds, As visions of their sugar cookies danced in their heads; We closed all the curtains, and the staff took a nap. The next morning they rose; each wearing their holiday cap. When out in the lot there arose such a clatter, Keith sprang from the counter to see what was the matter! Away to the door he flew like a flash, Unlocked the doors, and let in the mass! The shoppers in a line, heal to toe, Their teeth all a chatter as they got their hot cocoa. What to their wondering eyes should appear, But a handmade silver necklace and jewelry for your ears. With a hot cup of cider, take a long sip. You picked out the painting perfect for Nick. They wrapped it in paper and hand-lettered his name, There’s something for everyone, no piece is the same. There’re drawings on paper! Paintings and pots. Jams, jellies, jewelry, and hand-knitted socks. From the base of the stage to the ceiling so tall, There are gifts piled up made for you all! We have one-of-a-kind gifts for both girls and their guys. When other shoppers are there, you smile and say hi. Pick up your bags and buy an ornament or two, With a car full of gifts – for your sweetie and you. 16 | EVENTS
And then in a sprinkling, snow fell on the roof; Holiday season is here and this is the proof. The shoppers drove off with their bundles of presents, And turned back around just to go back for seconds. The gifts were all sold and we turned out the lights; Happy Holidays to all, and to all a good night! The Art Center welcomes everyone to this year’s Holiday Art and Craft Fair the weekend before Thanksgiving. This is The Art Center’s second largest annual fundraiser. We hope that you all will join us to do your holiday shopping November 22, 23, and 24.
Demo Night
Friday, November 1, 6:30-9pm Have you ever stopped to listen to the sounds of creation? When you look at a piece, do you hear the sound of charcoal on paper, the striking of a hammer on metal, the pottery wheel turning the clay, the squeaking gears on the printing press, the paint squeezing from the tubes, the music in the artist’s studio? We are breaking the silence and making some noise at this year's Demo Night. This event is one of Grand Junction’s largest collaborative demonstrations and brings together a multi-faceted group of artists to show off their skills in an evening of art-centered activities. Demo Night is open to all ages and takes over the entire building. This event gives the general public a glimpse into the artisans' creative processes and allows the artists an opportunity to interact with the public and share their knowledge. This event proudly showcases The Art Center’s mission of bringing artists from all mediums together to express community sharing through a love and appreciation of the arts.

34 | HOW TO ENROLL
Musings The Type Exhibition, Hidden in Plain Type, introduced an interactive element that took onlookers from bystanders to part of the installation. A word search led participants around the gallery and helped to illuminate unseen details. Some worked independently and others in groups. Visitors of all ages were engaged, examining the smallest features of each installation.
A Word from the Wise A great idea should always be left to steep like loose tea leaves in a teapot for a while to make sure that the tea will be strong enough and that the idea truly is a great one. ~ Phoebe Stone
...SO HOW DOES IT POUR?
Illustrated by Matt Jones Digital Color by Haley Van Camp The teapot has been interpreted in its many forms by countless potters throughout time, but there are some fundamental principles that should be considered when attempting to create one of your own designs. Spouts can be problematic for beginners or even intermediate students due to the relationship between the spout, lid, handle, and fill line. As the pot rotates to pour, the water will remain level as the vessel tips downward. If the relationship or “rotational allowance between the spout and lid is too small, the water will pour out the top. With the correct rotational allowance and spout-to-fill-line relationship, the teapot should pour with ease. (See page 23.) EXTRAS | 35
