Letter from the Show Director Welcome to the second edition of Art Silicon Valley/San Francisco (Art SV/SF), Art Miami’s International Contemporary and Modern Art Fair on the west coast. Centrally located between Silicon Valley and San Francisco at the San Mateo Event Center, the fair is proud to feature highly respected international galleries presenting investment quality Contemporary and Modern works of art. In addition to established artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, galleries will present works by emerging and new media artists. In keeping with Art Miami’s high standards of quality, Art SV/SF will present a curated balance of blue-chip art along with works by emerging, mid-career and experimental talent. The fair will offer the unique experience of viewing great art and exploring innovative cultural programming including on-site installation projects, interactive art, and artist talks for all audiences and taste levels. We are confident that whether you are a seasoned or new collector, your visit to Art SV/ SF will provide you with a unique opportunity to enhance or start your collection. The main objective of our fair is to service a community, which is rich and diverse in its cultural history and contributions. It is our belief that this community of new collectors will become the next great caretakers, collectors and philanthropists of the international art market. Please be sure to attend the educational programming presented by One Art Nation, which brings together leading opinion leaders and art industry experts to speak on all levels of collecting as well as visiting all of our notable Bay Area cultural institutions, many of whom are organizing independent exhibitions and events for the fair: SFADA; SJICA; Stanford Art Spaces; tmoro projects; UC Davis Art Studio; ZERO1; Shipyard Trust For The Arts (STAR); Djerassi Resident Artist Program; Leonardo; San Jose Museum of Art; Fine Arts Museums of S.F. (Artpoint); Creativity Explored; MACLA. We want to extend a special thank you to ScholarMatch, this year’s VIP Preview Beneficiary, for their important work in the Bay Area and for their support of the Fair. Founded by author Dave Eggers, ScholarMatch began as a simple crowdfunding platform and grew into a full service college-access organization. Their mission is to make college possible for underserved youth by matching students with donors, resources, colleges, and professional networks. ScholarMatch helps more than 500 students per year realize their college dreams. We are pleased with the enthusiastic support that we have received from this industrious and inventive community, the local art dealing community, the San Francisco Art Dealers Association, our Main Sponsors; Ruinart Champagne and Four Seasons Silicon Valley, along with the San Mateo County Event Center. It is my distinct pleasure to offer a warm welcome to Art SV/SF, and to thank you for your enthusiasm, encouragement and ongoing support.

San Francisco’s Art Ecosystem on the forefront of many convergences. San Francisco ranks consistently among the healthiest places to live, with a pioneering culinary scene and a wealth of entrepreneurial spirit. In large part due to the creative energy at large, San Francisco sits on the forefront of a wealth of opportunities in the visual arts. Amidst the bustle of our city lies a robust group of galleries, renowned and burgeoning art schools, large-scale development projects with public art requirements, the world’s largest and most-anticipated photography exhibitions, and the impending re-opening of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. San Francisco is home to one of the largest municipal art dealers associations, San Francisco Art Dealers Association (SFADA). Fiftyfive members strong, our members range from iconoclasts Gallery Paule Anglim and Fraenkel Gallery to the edgy and market-savvy Ever Gold, Altman Siegel and The McLoughlin Gallery, to name but a few.

2014 presents an interesting time for the global art market to tune into San Francisco. The San Francisco Arts Commission, for example, is awarding nearly $30 million of commissions to artists at the San Francisco Airport and Moscone Convention Center. The development boom here has given rise to $20-40 million of public art requirements. And with the impending re-opening of SFMOMA, all eyes will be on our community, as the museum will unveil its new and growing collection. And, yes, we gallerists here eagerly chase the holy grail of newly-minted technologists and their financiers. It will take an ecosystem, akin to what has developed over time in our technology, tourism and wine industries to work collectively in order to build some of the greatest art enthusiasts of our time. Organized by the Krannert Art Museum, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and curated by Kathryn Koca Polite and Kathleen Harleman. Sponsored in part by the Krannert Art Museum Exhibition Support Fund. Expanded for presentation at SJMA by the Wegman Studio and Rory Padeken.

The San Jose Museum of Art celebrates new ideas, stimulates creativity, and inspires connection with every visit. Welcoming and thoughtprovoking, the museum rejects stuffiness and delights visitors with its surprising and playful perspective on the art and artists of our time. This fall, SJMA hosts a diverse group of exhibitions that make real-life connections to art and visual culture. William Wegman is best known for his heartwarming and amusing photographs of his Weimaraners. Artists Including Me: William Wegman, on view through February 7, introduces another very personal side of this widely loved artist. With his signature quick wit, Wegman reflects on his life as an artist and on his artistic heroes. He toys with the pretenses and oddities of the museum world by “installing” picture postcards in the fictional museum spaces of his collaged paintings.

The Bay Area has long been an important center for pioneering clay movements. In the 1960s, ceramic artists radically rethought traditional approaches to ceramics and the history of clay as a functional, vesselbased art form. Pioneers such as Peter Voulkos, Robert Arneson, and Viola Frey brought expressive potential and experimental techniques to traditional methods of clay sculpting. Character Studies: Clay from the Collection features ceramic figurative sculptures created in Northern California during the last forty years.

Covert Operations: Investigating the Known Unknowns is the first survey of work by artists who are responding to the uncertainties of the post-9/11 world. They employ the tools of democracy to bear witness to attacks on liberty and to the abuse of power: they reveal previously unreported information and government actions that may limit civil rights. SJMA is centrally located in downtown San Jose. See what you think.

In 2015, they gave seventy-three artworks to SJMA, exhibited for the first time this fall. Included are Jay DeFeo’s delicate renderings, Richard Diebenkorn’s works on paper, Willem de Kooning’s explosive compositions, and Philip Guston’s dynamic drawings. Also included are works by Richard Serra, Alex Katz, Bruce Conner, Red Grooms, Frank Lobdell, Brice Marden, and Claes Oldenburg.

FALL OPEN STUDIOS AT HUNTERS POINT SHIPYARD OCTOBER 17 & 18 11AM - 6PM Visit STAR at Booth SP 2

STAR’s mission is to preserve and expand the arts community at Hunters Point Shipyard by: -

Conserving affordable artist studios and workspaces Supporting arts programs in the Bayview community Creating arts exhibition and education facilities Promoting the shipyard as a hub of artistic activity

STAR and the Hunters Point Shipyard Artists Community Almost as soon as the first artists responded to the offer from founder/ visionary Jacques Terzian to rent art studio space at the old shipyard, someone has wanted them gone. STAR arose out of the need to have an organized defense of the studio space and a public face for the artists’ community. Since 1995 STAR has worked to represent the interests of the artists who work in the abandoned Navy buildings in the southeast corner of San Francisco. Whether participating in the Citizens Advisory Committee, testifying at City Hall or conducting surveys of Shipyard artists to gather information, STAR volunteer board members are working to represent the interests of the artist community.

Artists will continue to occupy nearly 250,000 sq ft of studio space at the Shipyard on into the future. But, what else will be around them? STAR has embraced the vision of a Community Arts Center on an already designated parcel of land adjacent to the studio buildings. This may be an energizing location for participation and exploration in the arts for people of all ages and from a variety of communities. We also envision an Arts District growing up next to the studios and the Arts Center. San Francisco is losing art spaces at an alarming rate, as other uses are more enticing for property owners. We imagine a place, perhaps the last place left in San Francisco, for the arts to put down permanent roots. Achieving that outcome is the work for the next few years for STAR. We invite you to participate and to follow our progress towards our goals.

SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS

29 art sv/sf

Currently, with the Hunters Point Shipyard undergoing a massive transformation into housing and commercial uses, the artists need for representation is greater than ever. As part of the development agreement, a new 130 studio building will rise across a plaza from the only studio building that will be preserved. STAR has been very involved in the design of the building, making sure that it will serve the needs of artists now and in the future. STAR successfully fought for such amenities as solar electric panels on the roof, 42 wide doors to every studio, and other design features focused on affordability.

STANFORD ART SPACES

is proud to be participating in the Art SIlicon Valley / San Francisco Art Fair, bringing advanced art from around the world to the Peninsula.

SAS is a art exhibition program supported by Stanford's Center for Integrated Systems, which recognized almost thirty years ago that the visual arts could play an important role in the broadly humanistic education of scientists and engineers. The merger of art and science has been recently afďŹ rmed by the university with the inclusion of hands-on creative projects in the undergraduate curriculum and the creation of the exciting new Stanford Arts District, inlcuding the just-opened Anderson Collection at Stanford University, adjoining the Cantor Arts Center, founded in 1894 as the pioneering Stanford Art Museum. During our three decades, SAS has shown hundreds of artists in our core venues of the Paul G. Allen Building, with its nanofabrication facility, the adjacent David Packard Electrical Engineering Building, and other venues. We are actively seeking to expand our program in order to serve Bay Area artists and the Stanford community. DeWitt Cheng, Curator dewittc@stanford.edu Facebook.com/StanfordArt Spaces

Praxis-Perfect

SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS

Praxis is a term that has been popular is art discourse for a number of years, often with Marxist and philosophical implications of questionable relevance.. WIkipedia: "Praxis is the process by which a theory, lesson, or skill is enacted, embodied, or realised. "Praxis" may also refer to the act of engaging, applying, exercising, realizing, or practicing ideas." The contemporary idea that artists choose the medium appropriate to realizing their vision is accurate, but only partially. Artists spend countless hours mastering a medium (or many), and the medium helps in turn shape the creative process and the final result. This is borne out in the stunning work of Bay Area painters Tom Gardner, Pascal Rochette, and Bill Russell; photographer Maurice Stevens; assemblagist/collagist Joy Broom; and computer artist Corinne Whitaker. In their work, the medium is an indissoluble part of the visual message, and the images are collaborations between (or 'victorious' struggles with) the medium.
