Letter from the Director Dear Art Patrons, It is with great pleasure we present and welcome you to the inaugural edition of CONTEXT New York 2016. After four successful years in Miami, CONTEXT joins Art New York at an exciting venue, Pier 94 in midtown Manhattan. The combined efforts of CONTEXT New York and Art New Yorkprovide a unique opportunity to acquire important works from both the primary and secondary markets, while presenting an ambitious and re-energized edition, featuring a variety of special projects, collaborations with New York-based institutions and the outstanding work of our selected international galleries. Launching CONTEXT in New York has been an incredible journey with much support along the way. This first edition would not have been possible without the great energy and trust of the international galleries and more than 250 artists from 20 countries. Aiming to contribute to an already vibrant arts scene in New York, I am pleased to present the carefully selected galleries and curated special projects featured in this inaugural fair. Each contributor will give you an exclusive opportunity to explore, question, understand, and experience the exciting world of contemporary art. Throughout the process, and with the great support of my colleagues at Art Miami LLC, curators and exhibitors, many new art works were created specifically for the fair, featuring a series of solo artist exhibitions, curatorial and special projects, talks and more. Lastly I extend my sincere gratitude to the galleries and artists for the trust and vision they’ve given us to launch this inaugural CONTEXT edition.

Sincerely,

Julian Navarro | Director, CONTEXT New York

Young artists will be introduced to various art making techniques under the supervision of the Museum’s experienced Teaching Artists while their parents visit the Fairs. To register, and for more information, email Anna DuBose at adubose@cmany.org. FRIDAY, SATURDAY & SUNDAY, MAY 6-8 | IN ART NEW YORK CAFE The 1AN ART SYMPOSIUM brings together leading advisors, dealers, curators, critics, and artists to speak on a range of topics to help you build, maintain and protect your collection. FRIDAY, MAY 6 2:00 – 2:30PM Artist Spotlight: Why are Artists Willing to Starve in New York for Their Art? Why is a significant majority of emerging artists willing to take up the challenge of “digging into” New York City on a shoestring? Bruce Helander discusses the ups and downs of survival in the Big Apple. 3:00 – 3:45PM Panel: Trends of the Art World from an Investment Perspective As the finance industry moves towards viewing art as an asset, more collectors are looking to monetise their art and invest it in other interests. Lending against an art collection allows for collectors to gain collateral without selling their works. Innovative art funds are also offering investors an opportunity to buy high-end art along with a complete art service solution. Annelien Bruins, Senior Art Advisor and COO at Tang Art Advisory, Terence Doran, Managing Director at Art Capital Group and Madelaine D’Angelo, Founder & CEO at Arthena, discuss trends and advise on the financial benefits of this tangible asset.

Fair Highlights 4:15 – 5:00PM Panel: The Habits of Successful Collectors Whether you are buying out of personal passion or as a financial investment, it is important to ask the right questions to the right people, at the right time. The art market is complex so it’s important to understand its many and varied risks to stay informed when making a purchasing decision. Our expert panel, made up of Lisa Austin, a top Fine Art Advisor with over 30 years of experience; Nica Gutman Rieppi, Senior Research Associate, specializing in the examination of paintings, and Jessica Davidson, Director of Sales and Business Development at Bidsquare, offer tips and techniques for successful collecting. SATURDAY, MAY 7 1:00 – 1:30PM Artist Spotlight: A Look at the Works of Kim Sun Tei Kim’s “Guardians” series poses action hero-like figures above a dark ground, their silhouette outlined in shimmering gold. This session will offer a unique view of the works of the Korean artist, represented by the Olivia Park Gallery, exhibiting this year at CONTEXT Art New York.

3:00 – 3:45PM The Evolution of Art and Finance Services in Wealth Management The Head of Deloitte’s Art & Finance Practice in the US, Phillip Klein, and an Insurance Expert from Alliant Private Client Group, Donald Poster, will look at collectors’ needs, with focus on monetizing, partnering, transferring and protecting one’s collection. 4:00 – 6:00PM | Hosted by Flowers Gallery | Booth #A11 Book Signing with John Keane Written by Mark Lawson and with introductory texts by Alex Danchev and Brian Eno, The Art of John Keane takes readers on a journey through the creative process and inspirations behind “the man who paints the news”, coined by BBC journalist and broadcaster Dan Damon. The publication includes insightful interview commentary with John and Mark, behind the scenes photographs of the artist visiting places of conflict across the globe, and over 200 full color images of his work.

19 context new york

2:00 – 2:30PM Artist Spotlight: A Conversation with Yuroz This session features a conversation with artist Yuroz Gevorgian, represented by the Moso Art Gallery exhibiting at Art New York 2016, about his “Symbiosis” Collection, a visual symphony of perspectives and dimensional rhythm. Through ambitious abstraction and sleek expressionist appendages, Yuroz and Bruce Helander, renowned art critic, writer, curator and artist, will guide attendees to reckon the interdependence between our survival with nature, and nature’s survival with the attitude of the human race.

4:15 – 5:00PM Panel: Balance of Power – Who are Today’s Market Makers? The art world has changed significantly over the years where we’ve seen an unprecedented number of art fairs, new technologies and record-breaking auction sales. As a result, the market has expanded and more artists are taking center stage. Heidi Lee-Komaromi, Manhattan-based Contemporary Art Specialist, and experts, including Gabriela Rosso, CEO at RoFa Projects, will discuss the forces shaping the art world today, new market factors and how artists have been impacted.

Adding a form or object that casts shadows, compliments the other artwork in color can enhance an existing realistic or abstract painting or photograph. This session will look at how 3-D art can function for you, by examining the works of Matt Devine, a sculptor of steel, aluminum, and bronze and Arno Kortschot, a sculptor and spatial designer, both represented by the Jennifer Kostuik Gallery. 3:00 – 3:45PM Panel: New Tools of the Trade What does it mean to collect in the digital age? It’s undeniable how much technology has influenced art and its market in recent decades. Hosted by artnet, art experts Lucy Redoglia, a museum marketing and social media expert for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Connor Williams, New York based art market specialist, will explore technological developments and applications throughout the whole of the art business. 4:15 – 5:00PM Panel: :Digits to Digital: Trends in Merging the Handmade with Digital Technologies New technologies have ushered in not only a new aesthetic platform but have also invigorated ways in which analog and/or handmade material can be realized. :DIGITS TO DIGITAL: A curated projection program by Regine Basha

context new york

24 Joey Fauerso Artists: Leah Beeferman, Joey Fauerso, Brent Green, Kristin Lucas, Birgit Rathsmann and Carmelle Safdie. We all know that digits refer to numbers (and the digital to code) but we may forget sometimes that it also refers, literally, to our fingers and toes. This is our first source of technology. How is the digital realm affected by this first source of technology - the body ? How does the hand physically participate in forming our digital perceptual experiences. When we are purposefully made of aware of the handi-work behind the digital, how is the artwork perceived? This program focuses on the physicality of the handmade, hand-built and hand-driven sources in digital works or moving images as we might also call them. In some cases, the hand may produce an imbalance, or a perceived ‘flaw’ purposefully triggering our sense of empathy or pathos, such as with the social-media satirical work of artist Birgit Rathsmann and her collaborators. In other cases, the hand may be involved in semi-nostalgic references to our life and style before the digital ubiquity, as with the vintage dance party/club, ‘The

Special Exhibitions Shape’ by Carmelle Safdie. In Brent Green’s stop-motion animation, the hand produces rudimentary Dubuffet-like sculptural forms and drawn narratives reminiscent of childhood or earlier eras. Evidence of the hand-at-work also can create a sense of slowness and presence of mind, such as with the painted animation work about TM (Transcendental Meditation) by Joey Fauerso. Leah Beeferman and Kristin Lucas, both work with hybrid constructs of the digital and the hand; in the case of Beeferman this translates into images reflecting her experience of space and time in given natural environments; while for Kristin Lucas, it’s more about how the human register is physically and psychologically disoriented within the digital realm. Special Exhibitions EL MUSEO DEL BARRIO will feature a special program in the CONTEXT New York VIP Lounge.

Relational Abstractions: A curated exhibition by Rocio Aranda-Alvarado What happens when geometry begins to move? The purest form of modernist ideals—geometric shapes, planar forms—these are the foundation of abstraction. When these shapes move or seem to move due to our perception Museo del Barrio’s participation in CONTEXT explores the continued relevance of the Optical and kinetic art movements to contemporary aesthetics. Harbingers of these historic styles in a new environment, a new generation of artists has adapted powerful signs that prevailed in the visual culture of the 1950s and 1960s for their own work. Movement, color relationships, and geometric complexities are all filtered through new ways of thinking about the purpose of art. Of the works explored here, the fundamental characteristics they share include simplicity of form, the creation of a new kind of surface illusionism, or making the viewing plane into an endless motion of color and form. Through these works we see how artists of today continue to be interested in the tradition of those working in the 1960s. They use research and anthropological observation in order to find new ways to relate to the public and to cultivate the sense of an environment or even a direct relationship between the viewer and the art object. Geometric abstraction, optical art and kinetic art were experimental rest stops along the route to the total art experience—forms, perhaps, of relational abstractions.
