Message from the
Minister of Defence
Dr NG Eng Hen We have just celebrated the 48th year of Singapore’s independence. Every year that we celebrate our National Day marks another chapter in our nation’s progress. We use this day to remind ourselves of all the challenges and uncertainties Singapore faced at its founding. We celebrate how much we have achieved, how far we have come as a sovereign nation because its citizens of different backgrounds chose to unite, work together and overcame common hardships to forge a better future. Indeed, Singapore has achieved much progress and prosperity and enjoyed many years of security and stability. This year’s NDP tells this Singapore Story through weaving many individual stories that today make us who we are as Singaporeans and define us as a nation. It was a people’s NDP about ourselves. Each story was a real and heart warming experience. The NDP was a celebration about our diversity as much as it was an affirmation of what Singapore means to all of us. The success of the NDP was only possible because you as participants sacrificed many weekends to put up a grand show. Your enthusiasm and energy was boundless, motivated by a desire to do this special and personal act as a birthday gift to our country and other Singaporeans. I have been touched by the many stories told in this year’s NDP, including the story of each participant. I would like to thank all of you for helping to make NDP 2013 a most memorable experience for all Singaporeans. I hope this magazine will bring back wonderful memories of NDP 2013, the special moments and
2
the friends you made. Happy Birthday Singapore!
Message from the
Chief of Defence Force
LG Ng Chee Meng What does it mean to be a Singaporean? What does Singapore mean to each of us? Every National Day strengthens our bond as one united people. NDP 2013 exemplified that especially well. We celebrated our unity and strength in diversity. This year’s NDP was special, not just because of the numerous firsts such as the human LED and “Sing a Nation”, but especially through the very apt theme “Many Stories... One Singapore”. The theme connected with Singaporeans from all walks of life by encouraging our fellow citizens to share the stories that make us who we are and pass these on in our collective national memory. Notably, NDP 2013 balanced the spectacle of the parade with the spontaneity of celebratory activities at the pre-Parade carnival. The celebrations also encouraged our people to continue to aspire for greater heights and reached out to all segments of our society. Indeed, we have delivered an energetic and poignant experience to allow Singaporeans to celebrate our National Day in their own meaningful ways. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all individuals and organisations who have contributed to the success of NDP 2013. It was your hard work, enthusiasm and determination that have made this year’s National Day celebrations possible. Congratulations and thank you for a job well done!

Message from the
Chairman Executive Committee, NDP 2013
BG PERRY LIM The NDP is not just a one-day event but a journey. In our NDP journey we have engaged and connected with not just the 26,000 spectators and television audiences on 9 August, but also many others through social media and NDP-related activities and projects. I would like to express my deepest appreciation to all who have joined us in dedicating so much of ourselves towards creating this memorable celebration for our fellow Singaporeans. Our theme this year was “Many Stories … One Singapore”. These three dots in the middle convey the sense that there are still many stories to be written about us. In some ways, this book aims to capture many of these stories, and hopefully, it can serve to remind us of this time when despite our diverse backgrounds, individual stories and different aspirations, we came together to achieve something quite remarkable. Bringing this grand celebration from conception to fruition was possible only because of your tremendous sense of teamwork, pride and passion in staying true to our collective vision and overcoming challenges along the way. Thank you for making the difference.

LOGO
NDP 2013 is a colourful and stylish representation of this year’s theme “Many Stories… One Singapore”. Circles and dots of different sizes and colours come together to form the shape of Singapore, representing our Home. These circles symbolise the many stories – at the personal, community and national levels – that have shaped our common history and represent the experiences we have gone through together as a country, and the values and aspirations that make us who we are. At the centre is a red heart, a graphic symbol of our love and passion for our Nation. Singaporeans have much to celebrate. The colours are vibrant, filled with life and hope for the future. The range of colours reflect our celebration of diversity and remind us all that there are many paths of success. The ripples featured in the logo emphasise the effect of each of our stories on all Singaporeans. We are living our stories together in an inclusive and gracious society. The dots after the words “Many Stories” highlight the simple truth that our Singapore Story continues to evolve.
5
THEME
As kids, we love stories. Stories connect us to another place, another time. Stories excite our imagination, allow us to step into another person’s shoes and see the world through another person’s eyes. They give us knowledge, hope and joy. We continue to be entertained by stories throughout our lives and through these stories, we are able to share dreams, aspirations and perspectives with each other, creating an even bigger communal story. In NDP13, we pay tribute to all Singapore Stories. Every Singaporean has a story to tell and together we form a new and distinct story, that is, the story of ONE SINGAPORE.

COMMITTEES
EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
62
ORGANISING SECRETARIAT
As the Organising Secretariat (OS), we are extremely fortunate to be of value to all the committees in NDP13. Especially when Chairman EXCO turns his head to look for answers and everyone’s heads conveniently turns to us. It has been a frustrating, happy, angry, exciting, sad, shocking, delightful, meaningful, defining, draining, surprising, touching, humbling and positive experience for all of us here. OS, the first and the last line of support for NDP13!
63
SHOW COMMITTEE
Our aim was simply to put up the most awesome show for the nation and enjoy the NDP journey together with our many friends in the Show Committee – and what an awesome and priceless journey it has turned out to be! The miracle of a large-scale NDP show involving 4,500 participants lies in the passionate belief, hard work and unwavering commitment of many people, organizations and show partners behind the scenes. Nothing in the show is left to chance and every second of creative performance is supported by a complex synchronization of human, technical and logistical activities. This NDP journey has been a special one that will be savoured and remembered by all of those who walked with us and most importantly; you’ll never walk alone in the Show Family.
64
PARADE AND CEREMONY COMMITTEE
“Special thanks to our dedicated trainers, high-spirited and committed participants and hardworking subcommittee members in making NDP13 a wonderful experience.” COL Simon Lee Wee Chek, Chairman, Parade & Ceremony Committee
The Parade and Ceremony (P&C) segment for this year’s NDP aims to present a meaningful and dignified parade that will showcase the tenacity and resolve of Singaporeans. The P&C segment is formed up by men and women from 31 contingents and is a tradition in every NDP. It is an useful platform for Singaporeans to remember our roots and honour our traditions. The Parade is about Singaporeans, young and old, male and female, standing tall and standing proud, showing the world that we are disciplined, committed and passionate.
65
DYNAMIC DEFENCE DISPLAY COMMITTEE
The Dynamic Defence Display (D3) Committee set out with one goal: to “surprise and awe” both the live audience and TV audience. We mobilized personnel and assets from diverse operational backgrounds and formed them into a cohesive unit that made this year’s D3 a success. Representing SIngapore’s future, the cast of Ah Boys to Men as well as 229 Primary School students from Yishun Primary School engaged the audience with their lively performance of “The Recruit Anthem”. We would like to thank each and every individual who contributed to the success of D3 this year and hope that you have had a wonderful journey to NDP 2013! Happy 48th Birthday Singapore!
“While we might have cutting edge platforms and dedicated and committed operators, we must also do our part to prepare the next generation to be ready and capable to protect Singapore when it is their turn to do so” COL Dinesh Vasu Dash, Chairman, D3
66
INFRASTRUCTURE & DECORATIONS COMMITTEE
“Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.” Winston Churchill
On 9th August, 27,000 spectators will file into the Floating Platform. Thousands more will join in, from the Marina Bay Area to those watching from home. All gathered to celebrate the Nation’s 48th Birthday, with a Parade and Show to dazzle and wow the crowd. For all this to happen, the NDP13 Committee had to transform the Float @ Marina Bay into a venue suitable for the coming festivities. The infrastructure and decorations works required for the NDP was entrusted to a team drawn from HQ 3 DISCOM and DSTA. Responsible for the stage, the various works on the seating gallery and the decorations inside and outside the Float @ Marina Bay, the team was headed by Commander 3 DISCOM, ME7 Chow Wai Yein, with his deputies
LTC Dennis Oh, and MAJ Ivan Tan. Rounding out the team was DSTA Senior Engineer Evan Heng Mok Kwee, whose technical expertise was an invaluable experience for such a project. Through the journey, the team faced several challenges. In adversity, one finds true partners. And in this unforgettable experience, this aphorism has rung true. The roar of the crowd will fade, the spectators will disperse. Our stage and other works will be dismantled. Yet, the most precious part of NDP13 will always remain; the friendships forged, and thee memories made. And in the whole wonderful, trying and exhilarating journey that was NDP13, each of us found a dedicated band to walk this journey with us.
67
FIREWORKS COMMITTEE The NDP13 Fireworks Committee is made up from servicemen and women from SAF Ammunition Command. Led by ME6 Adrian Lim Beng Boon, we set out to deliver an awesome fireworks display, to complement and support NDP13. We hope that all participants and spectators enjoy the fireworks display! Happy 48th birthday Singapore!
68
AIR PARTICIPATION COMMITTEE
From the command and control of aircraft to the execution of manoeuvres, Air Participation Committee complements the show from the air. With more than 10 aircraft airborne at any time during the parade, we depend on our highly trained air and ground crew for the safety of all our flights. For NDP13, we strive to have our aircraft on time, on target at show centre every time to thrill the crowd with sights and sounds from the air.
69
NAVAL PARTICIPATION COMMITTEE
Naval Participation Committee (NavPaC) is the committee in charge of managing all RSN participants in NDP13, from the GOH and marching contingents in Parade and Ceremony, to the craft showcased in the Sea Protector segment of D3. In the Sea Protector segment of the Dynamic Defence Display, the audience will be thrilled with traditional crowd favourites, with the RSN’s 11m Combat Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIBs), and new PCG craft, namely the PJ-class RHIBs. Making a return is the RSN Unmanned Surface Vessel (or USV). Completing the exciting array of craft are PCG PK-class craft, as well as the RSN sea boats which are mounted on the RSN 11m Combat RHIBs. The journey to NDP13 has been a interesting and fruitful one. Along, the way, we made many great friends in partners such as the Police Coast Guard, as well as external stakeholders such as PUB and URA. As a committee, we are proud to represent the Navy and are honoured to play a part in the NDP13 story; one story in an ocean of many other stories that makes us Many Stories, One Singapore
70
COMMUNICATIONS AND MULTIMEDIA COMMITTEE NDP 2013 was an exciting, challenging and rewarding journey for the Communications and Multimedia Committee. The Communications sub-committee worked tirelessly to ensure uninterrupted communications to ensure effective Command and Control for a successful NDP 2013. Through this journey, the team got to know each other closer, and also learnt valuable experiences from the various vendors engaged to provide the various types of communications required for the event. The Multimedia sub-committee also endeavoured to produce one of the most visually awesome NDP. With one of the largest digital floor projection and highest-resolution LED screens to date, coupled with an upgraded High-Definition (HD) camera system, the committee strived to deliver a visually exhilarating show experience for NDP 2013. The committee is proud to be part of the awesome NDP 2013 journey and this would not have been possible without the commitment and dedication from everyone in the committee. Happy 48th Birthday Singapore!
71
LOGISTICS & FINANCE COMMITTEE The Logistics and Finance Committee has been entrusted with the responsibilities of providing and sustaining the entire NDP 2013 participants and working parties with food, water, snacks, amenities such as mobile toilets, office & storage containers, and overall cleanliness in our area of operations. On top of these, we are also the one-stop procurement and finance centre. This year, we have successfully designed and produced a sleek and elegant funpack bag that is convertible between a backpack and a sling bag. This journey is definitely challenging with many stories behind the successful logistics & finance execution. We are glad to be part of NDP 2013’s success. We wish Singapore a happy 48th birthday!
72
SPONSORSHIP, ENGAGEMENT, BRANDING & PUBLICITY COMMITTEE
The Sponsorship, Engagement and Publicity Committee from 3rd Division Artillery fulfils three key supporting functions for NDP 2013. Through Sponsorship, we bring in valuable partners and secure resources to enable the work of the various committees. Lastly, we bring the NDP 2013 journey to the public in refreshing and impactful ways through our Publicity efforts. We are proud to play our part in contributing to the success of NDP 2013, and making it a more memorable and meaningful experience for all Singaporeans.

These include various types of speaker systems, such as front of house, in-fill and form up systems to enhance performers’ awareness and ensure movement synchronization during performance. The team seeks to immerse the spectators in the show through the delivery of an amazing audio experience, where the sound effects and music is tightly synchronized and integrated with the other key elements of the show, such as lighting, fireworks and multimedia effects.
74
TECHNICAL SUPPORT COMMITTEE
The NDP 2013 Technical Support Committee oversees the entire power supply requirement for NDP 2013 at Marina Bay. The team is formed by Air Force Engineers and Electrical Engineers from Air Engineering & Logistics Department, HQ RSAF and the Defence Science & Technology Agency (DSTA). They have commenced work since September 2012, conducting meticulous planning, comprehensive testing and thorough inspections, to ensure uninterrupted power supply for the National Event. The committee is proud to be part of the NDP 2013 journey and is thankful to be able to contribute towards a meaningful and memorable NDP 2013. This would not been possible without the dedication and effort from all members of our committee who worked hard behind the scene to plan, prepare, support and ensure success of National Day 2013.
75

With our strong team of people and our ethos towards medical excellence, all participants and spectators can feel reassured that they are cared for at all times in all situations.

“NDP 2013, to me, is the constant buzzing of my phone, and finding 68 unread emails in my inbox... It is the people who tell you something is not possible, but then do everything and anything to make it possible. And most of all, it is the pride that swells up in my heart every Saturday as I watch the performers give it their all…” Ms Goh Kai Shi, Media Relations Officer
Ms Denise Goh, Lead Media Relations Officer
79
MILITARY POLICE COMMAND COMMITTEE
SAF MP Command, being tasked with the provision of enhancing the security level and maintaining Military Law and Order, formed the Military Police Committee to provide Disciplinary Enforcement and Security Support in NDP 2013. A sub-committee under the Operations & Security Committee, the Military Police Committee is mainly formed by Military Policemen from the Law Enforcement Company, as well as a Company of NSmen from the 1st Provost Battalion to provide Disciplinary Enforcement and Security Support. We are glad to have rendered our services to ensure a safe and successful NDP 2013 for the nation. This would not have been possible without the dedication and effort from all Military Policemen of the committee.
80
OPERATIONS & SECURITY COMMITTEE The Operations and Security (O&S) Committee is entrusted with the mission to ensure a smooth, safe and secure 2013 National Day Parade that all Singaporeans can wholeheartedly enjoy. The Committee adopts a whole-ofgovernment approach and is represented by men and woman from the Singapore Armed Forces, Home Front Agencies, as well as across Government Ministries. The O&S Committee adopts a multiagency approach in the formulation and implementation of the integrated NDP2013 security plans, and served as the key conduit for the sharing of information and coordination of critical activities between the major stakeholders of the NDP. This contributed to the smooth and safe transitions between the various parade and show segments across different areas during NDP2013.
81
PUBLIC RELATIONS & PROTOCOL COMMITTEE The Public Relations & Protocol Committee (PR & P), headed by LTC Jason Ong, employs volunteers from different schools/institutions through the HEARTWARE Network as well as Military Public Relations Officers from the 3 Services. Our Committee serves to provide quality services such as ushering and managing the movement of all VIPs as well as Spectators in NDP13. Given the challenges faced by PR & P, the perseverance and enthusiasm demonstrated by our people in the months of planning have definitely paid off in making NDP13 a successful and unforgettable event.
82
SAFETY COMMITTEE
“This is my third experience as Chairman Safety, and working with all the experienced team mates has never been more rewarding and a positive experience. They made my job easier basing on the scale and complexity of the event.” R. Vijayan Pillai, Chairman, Safety Committee
We cannot have a fantastic parade and put up a great show for our Singaporeans without enforcing safety. The Safety Committee played an important part in ensuring safe actions throughout NDP 2013. They are responsible to ensure that professional standards approved by MOM and our Training Safety Regulations are met and adhered to by all the respective Committees. Safety has always been a key focus in organizing NDP, and this year is no exception. Safety will always remain an integral part of NDP 2013. The worker bees, spectators and participants had a blissful time as our safety teams went about integrating all Committees’ safety plans, managed the different layers of safety teams and worked tirelessly together to achieve one common goal; A meaningful, memorable and a safe NDP 2013.
83
SPECTATOR MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE
It has been a great joy and honour for the Spectator Management Committee to have had the opportunity to contribute to the NDP13 journey. The committee was made of mainly men and women from 1GDS, and augmented by the invaluable assistance from 17C4I, 30SCE, 40SAR and Heartware Ushers. The committee covered a spectrum of roles and responsibilities. These include establishing road closures to ensure the safety and security of the rehearsals area, ushering to ensure a smooth flow of human traffic, and distributing tickets in an efficient manner. We also work hand in hand with committees. Thankfully, all these came together perfectly to make NDP safe, secure, and enjoyable. All in all, although it has been a busy but fulfilling journey, and we are proud to have been able to serve and help organise our nation’s birthday celebrations. Happy 48th birthday Singapore!
84
