Editor's Note Hi Kids Join us in the National Day celebrations at the Public Libraries. Discover our nation’s heroes as well as participate in a simple quiz where you stand to walk away with some gifts from us! In August, we also celebrate Hari Raya - a festival which marks the end of the fasting period for our Muslim friends. Ever wondered how fasting practices are being observed? Make a date at the Tampines Regional Library to learn more. At the same time, check out the Pre - Hari Raya specials where you can learn to weave the ‘Ketupat’ (rice cakes) using colourful ribbons. Finally, in partnership with Singapore Science Festival 2013, visit Jurong West Public Library for Agilent’s Science –in–a–box, a programme that features interesting discoveries and experiments such as assembling a balloon–powered car, building your own praxinoscope to even making your own movies! In such a diverse and multicultural society, Singaporeans have inherited a large number of traditions from our forefathers. While many have become ancient over time, there are also many that are still in practise today. Let’s take a step to the past and explore Singapore’s cultural heritage. Look out for more upcoming traditional art-themed programmes at our public libraries next month! From Batik Painting, Chinese Calligraphy to Pulli Kolam-making, these programmes are proudly brought to you by “Fill Yourself With the Arts”!

03 Animated Movies! 10.00 am – 11.00 am Build your own praxinoscope and enjoy the fascination that comes with creating the illusion of moving pictures! A number of animated sequences are contained in the kit as well as instructions to create your own ‘animated movies’. This will be a project that participants will want to keep and use repeatedly at home.
Newton's Rocket Car! 1.00 pm – 2.00 pm Assemble a balloon-powered car based on Newton's third law of motion! After considering the importance of axles, bearings, and symmetry, participants will have plenty of fun racing their cars around the room.
Periscopes! 3.00 pm – 4.00 pm Learn about the basic properties of reflection by experimenting with mirrors, reflecting geometric shapes, and symmetrical words and images. Finally, construct your own periscope, and explore the different ways to apply the tool! This programme is suitable for children aged 8–14 and is organised in honour of the Singapore Science Festival.

Starting from January, make it a weekly Saturday date with them! Believing strongly that good reading habits and love for Chinese should start from young, Zaobao journalists and volunteers will be telling stories of different genre, including original stories from Zaobao's very own student publication, Thumbs Up Junior. This programme is open to children between four and eight years old.

Just like how seeds need to move away from the shade of the parent plant to grow better, children will recognise the need to move out of their comfort zones for greater growth. In this programme, children will be able to appreciate the wonderful and effective designs of winged seeds. They will also make models of their own winged seed and try them out! This programme is conducted in collaboration with NParks and is recommended for children aged 5-12. This programme is free but registration is required, limited to 30 parentchild pairs.

How to Hide a Lion Helen Stephens London: Alison Green Books, c2012. JP STE Iris meets a frightened lion and she invites him to her house. She tries hiding the lion in several places -- behind the shower curtain, under the blanket and even up a tree. However, it is difficult to hide a huge lion, and he is eventually discovered by Iris’s mum. Obviously, Iris’s mum does not like having a lion in the house. Thus, he is forced to run away and hide on his own. However, when trouble strikes the town, the lion saves the day and becomes an unexpected local hero! Filled with lovely illustrations, this delightful story about the friendship between a large lion and a small girl is bound to capture the hearts of children. Reviewed by Jaslin Koh

It was a tragedy. Titanic, the greatest cruise liner ever built, collided with a huge iceberg and sank. This tragedy brought about the deaths of about 1500 passengers. The rescue mission is an interesting and exciting episode that would definitely capture the reader’s attention. Hundreds of years later, this tragedy still lingers in the minds of many. Armed with a huge poster and fold out diagram of the ship that can be found in this book, you might be able to find many hidden secrets that are yet to be revealed. Inside the book, you will also find many other pictures about life as a first class passenger as well as what working in the boiler room is like. Read this book to stretch your imagination! The best moment in the book comes about when I read about the personal accounts of the passengers on board the Titanic. The book is brought to life as you flip through the beautiful illustrations of the different sectors of the boat. The saddest point of the book was when I read about the many families who were killed when the ship sank. I like it when the author was able to include facts that make the event come alive. For example, he would include small excerpts from the passengers themselves. Other books that I would recommend from the author would include “Amazing buildings” and “What the Romans did for us.” This review was contributed by Eshand Jagatheesan, aged 11. Eshand is a Junior Reading Ambassador with the National Library Board. When he is not reading, Eshand enjoys playing basketball, watching football and surfing the net.
The Mysterious Benedict Society Trenton Lee Stewart New York: Little, Brown, 2007 J STE The adventure begins for 11-year old orphan Reynie Muldoon when he answers an advertisement in the newspaper with the words: “ARE YOU A GIFTED CHILD LOOKING FOR SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES?” After passing a series of bizarre tests with his exceptional use of logic, Reynie Muldoon finds himself in the company of three other children who have talents as extraordinary as his: Sticky Washington, who has a photographic memory and remembers everything he reads; Kate Wetherall, who is extremely agile and can do almost any physical feat possible; Constance Contraire, whose talent is apparently being very small and disagreeable. They meet with a kind and intelligent man, known only as Mr Benedict, who explains why he needs their help: Someone has been transmitting subliminal messages through the television and radio signals, and it is causing the people of the world to panic. These messages come from the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened (L.I.V.E.), and the Sender has been making use of children to send them.

JS GAR Emily, Buster and Fidget from the fairy detective agency suddenly receive three cases to solve when strange streaks of bad luck occur at Podgy Bottoms High Street. One case involves the unusual death of Sir Walter Cross. All the chaos is actually due to a lost elf, Elvis, who needs to get his magic umbrella back in order to return home safely. Will the three fairy detectives be able to outwit Toff the Terrible and help Elvis? This is a delightful story of friendship with doses of magic and humour as well as an extraordinary fairy godmother. Reviewed by Siti Nadiah
The four children embark on a daring secret mission to go undercover at L.I.V.E and spy on the Institute’s sinister founder, Ledroptha Curtain. However, they run into more obstacles and risk being discovered. Will they succeed in their mission? Or will the evil Curtain triumph? Adventure-seekers will be thrilled by this book filled with dangerous and exciting twists, and will definitely be kept on the edge of their seats.
