Editor's Note Hi Kids Hope you had a good break from school as well as spending time with your families and friends! Did you attend any library programmes? School holidays might be over but there’s much to look out for at our public libraries. Haven’t had your fill of Science-related activities in June? Then, be sure to check out the “Quirky Science” video screenings. From the evolution of papyrus to paper; how the Internet began and the technology of Telephony – there is something for you to watch and learn. Catch the video screening at various libraries; for screening times and to learn how you can win entry passes to the Singapore Science Centre, please turn to page 5. On the 31st of May, we saw the opening of the 1st Children Green Library at Central Public Library. Since then, it has been widely visited by many, both young and old. Have you visited it? With its unique design and focus on the environment, do make the trip down as we guarantee it is worth the time! Back to reading, for the first time, Read! Singapore has involved a youth book selection committee. In addition, we will be inviting Rob Cleveland, an accomplished author and master storyteller in ‘A World United Through Stories’. Check out pages 12 for more information. Culture-vulture paintings! by Annusia Jaybalan
Any time of the year you choose to visit our public libraries, you will certainly have exciting “Fill Yourself With the Arts programmes to attend. Look out for our extensive line-up of painting workshops this July! Painting is renowned for being one of the oldest art forms that remains popular till today. This traditional art is presented in many different ways and is distinct with every culture. Go culture-hopping this July with painting workshops that let you create batik as a community effort and paint like the Indian folk artists of the indigenous Warli tribe! With Chinese ink painting, Warli painting and batik painting, it is back to the classics here in July. Do check out other traditional art forms at our public libraries, if you want to experience art as it was!

Leopard Adventure Anthony McGowan London: Puffin, 2012. J MAC
An Amur leopard, one of the most critically endangered big cats in the world, is in danger. Her family is trying to escape a forest fire but they are trapped between two rivers with no way out. Amazon and her cousin, Frazer, of the Trans-Regional Animal Conservation and Knowledge Society (TRACKS), are racing against time to get the she-leopard and her cubs out of danger. However, unknown to all of them are those who want the leopard dead and they are far more dangerous and cunning than any forest fire. Fine ancient larch and pine trees fill the forest and are worth millions of dollars, and these endangered leopards are in the way. With the leopards around, permission will not be granted for logging and those who want the wood are impatient to see the leopards gone. Can Amazon and Frazer get the leopards to safety in time? Sarah Crossan London: Bloomsbury, 2012. Y CRO
Can you imagine a world without any trees? In this story, the world has no trees, the oxygen level of the atmosphere has plummeted and the population has diminished drastically within just a few years. The world has become a wasteland. People live under a glass dome and only the Premiums – a privileged group of people – get enough oxygen to lead normal lives. When Quinn saves Alina, a rebel, from the Ministry’s clutches, he discovers the conspiracy behind the people’s suffering and anguish. As a Premium, Quinn has the power to put an end to the people’s suffering. Should he follow his father’s wishes, or stand up for what is right? Reviewed by Lynn Ang
The Secret Zoo
Bryan Chick New York: Greenwillow Books, 2010. J CHI Noah, his sister, Megan and their best friends, Richie and Ella, live right next door to the Clarksville City Zoo. Megan is the first to notice the puzzling behaviour of some of the animals late at night. When Megan goes missing, Noah goes in search of Megan after receiving a message from a bird to see Mr Tall Tail, the zoo’s famous monkey. With the help of their amazing animal friends, Noah, Richie and Ella discover the secret zoo, a place where animals are hidden before they go extinct on earth. Can the three friends succeed in rescuing Megan from the hands of the monstrous creatures of the secret zoo? Will they be able to help their animal friends? Noah is my favourite character as he is courageous, determined and witty as he meets all sorts of horrible creatures but he is not deterred by them! My favourite parts of the story are when the children discover the Secret Zoo and when Megan goes missing. It becomes really exciting when the story takes a mysterious turn. Readers who like adventure, mystery and a bit of mayhem, make this book your first choice the next time you visit the library! This review was written by Haraldine Hoon YaWen, aged 12. 47 Things You Can Do for the Environment
Lexi Petronis San Francisco, CA: Zest Books, 2012. Y 363.7 PET Do you know that our Earth is in danger? We hear and talk all the time about climate change, oil spills into oceans and toxic chemicals leaking into our groundwater. There's a lot we can do to start cleaning up the Earth and it starts with you! This book is divided into categories focusing on habits at home, school, in the community or on the road. It explores many minor and major things teenagers can do to make a positive difference in the environment, such as go on green dates, shopping at secondhand stores or donating old mobile phones. Each green project is followed by practical ideas and cheerful cartoon art. This book is full of ideas on how to be green. There are excellent discussion themes on being green, recycling and saving the Earth. Lexi Petronis believes that teenagers can make a difference because they are creative and motivated, and also because they are the generation who will inherit the planet in the near future. And she certainly has a point. Reviewed by Koh Chee Boon

Chickens Can’t See in the Dark Kristyna Litten Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2012. JP LIT
When Mr Benedict tells his class that chickens cannot see in the dark, little Pippa (who happens to be a curious chicken), wants to know what will help her see in the dark. She asks Mr Owl for advice but he says he cannot help; everyone knows that chickens cannot see in the dark. Little Pippa decides to head to the library to look for more information about seeing in the dark. She comes across a book: ‘Old Hens’ Tale’ which mentions that carrots can help. Little Pippa cooks a carrot feast for all the chickens on the farm and lo and behold, on a moonlit evening, everything just looks a little bit different to the chickens. Reviewed by Tse Ming Wai
