Editor's Note Hi Kids What is your favourite subject? Would it happen to be Social Studies? Well, do you know why this subject is part of your school curriculum? Social Studies is an important subject as it includes the sharing of historical events which gives us an understanding of why certain things are done in a certain way. This is so that we learn from and prevent a recurrence of our past mistakes. This month, join us as we discover the history of Kusu Island and Sisters’ Island. Kusu Island is often associated with those who visit the island for their yearly pilgrimage while Sisters’ Island boasts some of the best reefs accessible to public. How did their names come about? To find out more, join the Crescent Girls’ School Malay Language Society as they travel back in time with a play that touches on the importance of filial piety and family values. There will be traditional Malay performances as well so do join us with your friends and family. To find out more do turn to page 16 for more information. Mother’s Day celebration is here and our Librarians have prepared exciting programmes and activities for all. Some of the planned activities include learning how to create beautiful paper bags as a gift for your Mum, balloon sculpting, craft making and storytelling sessions. Don’t miss these exciting programmes. The details can be found on pages 4–7. Not forgetting, our Fill Yourself with the Arts programmes! This month, we have Tall Tales Crafty claws and snapping jaws, check out Dragons Alive, Fabulously Felted Fiction!, Stamping stories!, Fun–Tastic Fischer–Tip and many more! Are you excited? Then flip to pages 8–11 for registration details. Last but not least check out the recommended reading section and remember, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go.” — Dr. Seuss, “I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!”

Who's for dinner?
Claire Freedman London : Little Tiger, 2012. JP FRE Hen, Duck, Lamb and Bull are living happily on a little farm in the countryside until one day, they receive an unexpected visit from a hungry City Fox. Hen discovers this and quickly warns her friends. All of them become nervous except for Bull, who has a wild and crazy plan to out-fox City Fox. Something puzzling then happens when City Fox bumps into the animals – Hen starts to neigh, Duck starts to moo, Lamb starts to hee-haw, and the gigantic Bull starts to cluck. Will City Fox be fooled by the animals in disguise? And will he ever get to fill up his empty stomach? Bursting with colourful illustrations, this humorous book will surely appeal to children. However, the farmers also have a hard time dealing with Mr. Fox as he is very sly and crafty. To outwit the farmers, Mr. Fox has to show great determination and perseverance, two very important values in life. Will Mr. Fox still be able to live a peaceful life? The Somethingosaur
Tony Mitton London : Harper Collins Children’s, 2012. JP MIT Hatched from an egg in a deep slimy swamp, the small creature that emerges cannot find his mum. He roams across lands and asks if he is the child of the dinosaurs he see, but they all reply curtly that no, it cannot be. Finally he spots a strange looking cave emitting deep roaring sounds, could this be where his mummy is to be found? The rhyming sequence of this heart-warming narrative will surely make you want to read it aloud several times, and the illustrations make it easy for your imagination to take flight. The rhymes, pictures and colours, experienced in unison, are like the singing of a hopeful song by a lost child returning to his mother. This book is perfect for children who love stories about dragons and dinosaurs. Reviewed by Koh Wei Lian
Unusual day
Sandi Toksvig London : Random House, 2012 c1997. JS TOK Jessica’s class has thematic days where students are to bring special items based on a pre-assigned theme. For example, when it is “Blue Day”, the class will each bring something blue that day. On “Unusual Day”, all of Jessica’s classmates are to bring something strange and unusual to school. The items they bring range from a simple but uncommon four-leafed clover to a “Babushka”! Jessica, however, much to the bewilderment of her teacher and fellow classmates, brings her granny to class! Nobody believes that the gentle old lady is unusual in any way, until an emergency occurs in the house next door. Read this book to find out what happened and also, what is so unusual about Jessica’s granny. This book is perfect for beginner readers, and contains colourful illustrations. Reviewed by Ho Jing Ru
