Editor's Note Dear Kids Ready for some scary tales and spooks? Begin your Halloween journey with us through the speech and drama workshop. Enter an exciting imaginary world as you attempt to make out the interesting creatures waiting behind each door of the castle. Next, join in for a screaming good time of story and crafts and have a blast trick–or–treat adventure. Learn more about the artist Edvard Munch and his painting “The Scream”. Finally, on the eve of Halloween join us for spooky story telling and hair–raising tales! (page 11) Away from horror and turning to celebrations, it is Pasir Ris Public Library’s birthday! Have fun with the colouring competition and join in the merry Carnival with balloon sculpting, temporary tattoo and traditional games such as pick–a–stick, hopscotch, five stones and Chapteh. Don’t miss the cupcake workshop where a baker will show you tips and secrets to making this sweet delicacy! In addition, Children’s day is here so do check out our other interesting and exciting programmes organised especially for you. Dal , Dreams and Dreamscapes
A book on the life and works of Salvador Dalí, with a cover image of his famous work ‘The Persistence of Memory’.

Salvador Dalí was a Surrealist artist from Spain who painted works with random objects placed together to achieve imaginary landscapes. In his famous painting, ‘The Persistence of Memory’, Dalí draped images of melted clock faces across a tree-branch, together with a fleshy depiction of his face! What do you think he is trying to say with his representation of time? Coming a little closer to home, do you know that Singapore has a Salvador Dalí sculpture? The sculpture named ‘Homage to Newton’ can be found at the UOB plaza in Singapore’s financial district. It was Dalí’s tribute to the scientist, Sir Isaac Newton, and it portrays the spirit of scientific discovery. Join us this October to create your very own dreamscapes. Look out for our Sci-Fi craft workshops that are part of the Tech Arts-themed quarter from October to December!

Starting from January, make it a weekly Saturday date with them! Believing strongly that good reading habits and love for Chinese should start from young, Zaobao journalists and volunteers will be telling stories of different genre, including original stories from Zaobao's very own student publication, Thumbs Up Junior. How does architecture and space change and respond in relation to humans? Inspired by interactive architectural mapping on the façade of (typically, historical) buildings, Saturday Kids hopes to encourage children to rethink the way space is perceived and created. Using Scratch, the children will learn how to programme how colours, lines, and shapes can respond to movements and sounds. By projecting these lines on simple objects such as a ball, or a rectangular box, kids can explore how objects and spaces can respond and interact with us. This programme is suitable for preschool children together with their parents for learning on Chinese etiquette. Volunteers from the Preschool Teachers Network Singapore (PTNS) will be sharing the joy of learning about the Chinese culture with our young children. Chinese culture is one of the world's oldest cultures. The Chinese value the importance of the family including the hierarchical structure of social life and the cultivation of morality and values. Chinese believe that the family unit takes precedence over its individual members. As such, parents are often seen working hard to provide and for the family. Through the traditional Chinese fable of "One Bowl of Rice, One Bowl of Gold," children will learn the value of gratitude and the importance of being honest. Unleash your imagination this Children’s Day as Act 3 brings you on an amazing journey through different Asian tales! Learn how to use the skill of role-playing to tell a story dramatically and explore and develop your confidence through the use of theatre games. You will even get to showcase your talents to your parents at the end of the workshop! Parents are invited to join in for the last 30 minutes of the workshop and explore techniques that can be used to enhance your reading experience with your children. Join us for a sneak preview screening of Dream Defenders, a show made in Singapore by our local animators at Tiny Island Productions. Look out for the Draw your Momok Competition and more screenings in November! Dream Defenders are Zane, Zoey, and the supercomputer ZEUS. Zane and Zoey are twins, which means they bicker and battle together on a grand adventure that will take them far beyond the limits of their backyard. ZEUS sends the twins to the Dreamworlds and equips them with gadgets to fight the Momoks, monsters created from our nightmare and fears. Zane and Zoey will have to dig deep within themselves to find courage and the hero within. Princes from all over the land, bearing gifts, want to make the king fall asleep so that they can win the hand of this lovely princess. However hard they try, they just cannot do so – with the exception of a clever farmer boy who has a perfect plan to send the king into dreamland. As a parent, you will be delighted to see your young ones counting the animals that are brought to the king as gifts. Tom discovers that his late granddad had a secret. He had stolen one of the sultan’s eight jewel-encrusted tigers while serving in India. The figurine is one of the eight tigers which once decorated the Sultan’s throne. Tom and his uncle Harvey go to India to search for the treasure. Simultaneously, a ruthless collector is also looking for the missing tiger. Seven of the eight ‘tigers’ are already in his collection. It’s a race against time for Tom, his uncle Harvey and the billionaire’s lackeys. The story is full of unexpected twists and turns. Set in beautiful and colourful India, this fast-paced story is difficult to put down. Reviewed by Johan A Rahman

Stewart’s parents try to get him to wait patiently and pass his time wisely, but watch what he desperately tries to do to get to his camping trip sooner! Filled with funny details and anecdotes of the monster world, this book will have you in laughing fits. Reviewed by Yasmin Ally
Chu’s Day Neil Gaiman London: Bloomsbury, 2013. JP GAI Chu is a little panda with a very big problem: when he sneezes, BAD things happen! Join Chu and his parents on a day out to the library, a diner and finally the circus. Will Chu sneeze or won’t he? And what bad things will happen if he does? This simple yet charming tale by acclaimed writer Neil Gaiman is sure to delight readers of all ages. Just like Chu’s parents, you’ll feel the suspense when Chu gets one of his attacks, be it from a cloud of dust or a whiff of pepper. The little panda’s larger-than-life sneezes and the ensuing alarm he stirs up will tickle you to no end, with Adam Rex’s vivid illustrations complementing the tale perfectly. By the end of the story, after Chu’s comical response to the catastrophic events he’s created, you know this panda will remain a beloved character for children and parents for a long time to come. JUNIOR READING AMBASSADOR George’s Marvellous Medicine Roald Dahl London: Puffin, 2001. J DAH
This story is about a young boy named George, and his very mean and scary grandmother. In George’s eyes, his grandmother looks really ugly. She has pale brown teeth and a really terrible looking mouth. She is very upset all the time and she scolds George whenever she has the chance to. What makes it worse? She has to take a large spoonful of thick, yucky, brown medicine four times a day. If you think that makes her a better person, you are absolutely wrong; she is as horrid as can be! Like all of Roald Dahl’s books, I love this one because when I read it, I become engrossed in this magical, wondrous world that he has created. His exaggerated descriptions make me feel like I am one of the characters in his story. My favourite part of the story comes about when George’s grandmother begins to grow really big when she was fed the medicine that George makes out of household items! I hope I never get to taste any of George’s homemade medicine. I do not think they will make anyone well… In fact, it might make them sick. This review was written by Charlotte Lee Jiale, aged 10. Judy Moody & Stink: The Holly Joliday Megan McDonald Cambridge, Mass.: Candlewick Press, c2007. JS MAC It is Christmas Eve and Stink is wishing for snow. He lives in Virginia where it has not snowed since 1980. Jack Frost, a postman, finds out about Stink’s wish and grants him white fluffy snow on Christmas. Stink is as happy as a lark and tries to stay up to watch the snowfall. His sister, Judy, stays up as well, but Stink falls asleep soon after. Having waited in vain for snow, Judy cuts paper snowflakes and sprinkles paper confetti onto Stink. So, it did snow on Christmas, just as Jack Frost promised. I liked reading this book as it is really funny and I loved it especially when Judy tries to make Christmas special for her brother. She knows it is impossible to have a white Christmas in Virginia, but she decides to let her brother have his very own special Christmas. The sparkly book cover, a first in the Judy Moody series, makes me fall in love with this book even more. So, don’t miss the chance to read this touching story!
