Dear Readers, “Rojak”. A word that is familiar to many, it has two definitions: The first is a traditional fruit/vegetable salad dish and the other is a colloquial term for an eclectic mix of Singapore’s multi–ethnic and cultural diversity! For the latter, it is these combinations that make Singapore vibrant and colourful. This July, join us as we go on a nostalgic journey to experience the artistic treasures of different cultures through programmes such as ‘Paint like the Grandmasters’, ‘Travel with Gamelan’ or learn how to play the ukulele in ‘Aloha! Ukelele’ and watch ‘Mosquito and Pantang’. Check out the Retrospective Art and Heritage Journey on pages 10–11. Learn about and celebrate our local food heritage through clay moulding. You will get an opportunity to create miniature clay sets based on local food delights such as satay, ice kacang, duck rice and even roti prata! Interested to be part of this programme, turn to page 6 for more details. How often do you go online to look for recommendations for food places? Wonder what goes behind starting a food blog? Sign up for the one–hour session with local food bloggers as they share their food experiences. They will also show you the know–how of food photography and offer tips on food blogging. Do remember to bring your cameras as you will have the opportunity to take the food photos and have these images evaluated by these ‘experts’. This session is among the many interesting programmes such as spice challenge, nail art, photo booth, and many more, organised by Geylang East Public Library as part of their 25th anniversary fiesta. Next, take the chance to reminisce and relive ‘Xinyao’ – a local music movement that began in the mid 80s which continued well into the early 90s. Check out their exhibition at library@esplanade which showcases memorabilia from its heyday such as cassettes, band photos, posters, instruments and recordings. Do visit library@esplanade on 27 July for a tribute performance by the cast of “That Girl in Pinafore” – an upcoming local movie that will be screening in August. While you are there, don’t miss the opportunity to participate in the lucky draw and you might win movie tickets to the show! Last but not least – Read! Singapore 2013 marks its 9th anniversary with the theme of ‘Under One Sky’. Stressing on relationships between people of different cultures, societies and generations, 12 short stories and four poems were selected to explore this common humanity. These works are published as anthologies in the four official languages and will be made available at all 25 public libraries! In addition, a theme song, “I’m Gonna Read A Book Today” featuring Joakim Gomez and the students from Concord Primary School has made its debut. Chinese Ink Painting/Chinese Calligraphy Workshop Pick up books on Chinese culture and learn a skill or two! Earlier in April, readers tried their hand at Chinese Ink Painting and Chinese Calligraphy at a workshop conducted at library@chinatown. For many, this was the first time that they held a brush to write Chinese characters as well as paint lotus flowers. These sessions allowed participants to exercise their patience while practising their brushstrokes. During these introductory workshops, the instructors demonstrated

the right way of holding the brush and also explained the different techniques that may be used to create the art work. The pieces of works that were created reflected the effort and artistic flair of the participants. After the session, everyone went home with their very own works of art. OOOM is Singapore’s first social open mike. Initially an acronym for "Originals Only Open Mike", OOOM now welcomes performances of not only original songs, but also of covers and even poetry. It is a platform for celebrating creativity, enjoying the arts, and encouraging community bonding and peace-building through the universal language of music. OOOM will commemorate special days like the United Nations “International Day Of Families” and celebrate the good work of organisations in the social and humanitarian space. Anyone can sing and recite poetry at OOOM. Performance slots are open for registration at the venue half an hour before the session.

Singapore Style: Xinyao Through the Years Exhibition

From Stefanie Sun to JJ Lin to Kit Chan, it is no exaggeration to say that these local music luminaries were inspired by the xinyao movement. Xinyao 新谣 (short for 新加坡歌谣) was a local music movement that began in the mid-1980s and continued into the early ‘90s. Xinyao represented a genre of songs about life in Singapore, composed and written by Singaporeans. mm2enertainment and Hot Cider Films, in collaboration with Ocean Butterflies Music, Touch Music Publishing, Halo Music (Malaysia) and Tan Chang Ren presents the exhibition – Singapore Style: Xinyao Through the Years. The exhibition will feature the works of Singapore’s xinyao pioneers. There will be xinyao memorabilia displayed at the library@ esplanade’s Glass Showcase, with items such as cassettes, band photos, posters, instruments and recordings.

Learn about Singapore’s rich music history in this seminar about Xinyao 新谣 (short for 新加坡歌谣), a local music movement that began in the mid-1980s and continued into the early ‘90s. Relive the good old xinyao days with Daren Tan, Julie Tan and the cast of “That Girl in Pinafore” in a tribute performance to the xinyao music movement. “That Girl in Pinafore” is an upcoming local movie due in Singapore cinemas in August this year and follows the budding love story of a group of teenagers brought together by their love of xinyao songs. The concert will feature modern reboots of classic songs like Liang Wern Fook’s “Flowing Water” <细水长流> and Eric Moo’s <星空下>. Admission is free and no registration is required.

Xinyao Revival at the library@ esplanade Xinyao fans rejoice! The early ‘90s music movement is making a comeback this July with four exciting xinyao events at the library@ esplanade. Relive the good old days at the “Singapore Style: Xinyao Through the Years” exhibition held at the library@esplanade throughout the month of July. The National Library Board launched its first ever nationwide reading initiative, Read! Singapore, in 2005. Every year, we present an anthology of short stories and poems in the four official languages – English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil. The selected works are chosen within a framework of a theme. The theme for this year’s anthology is “Under One Sky” and the selected works highlight the untold complexities of family ties and remind us that we can also be bound together by our differences.

Due to the hazardous effects of synthetic pesticides on health and the environment, interest of using non-toxic but effective alternative means such as organic pesticides in controlling pests has grown over the years. Contrary to what most people believe, organic pesticides are not necessary green, better, and safer than synthetic pesticides. This talk focuses on the pros and cons of using organic pesticides and the target pest they control. Information on some bug buster recipes concocted from household products that are considered effective against garden pest will also be presented.

About the speaker Ms. Ariene G. Castillo is a Scientist with the Entomology and Nematology Section of the Plant Health Laboratory Division, Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority. 从 1999 年开始，为配合学校周年庆祝活动，中正中学（总校）与东区华文中心每年都举办张瘦石全国中小学书画展。每年的书画展我校都广邀全国中小学共襄盛举，以发扬及推广中华书画艺术，让书画艺术走近人们的生活。本次书画展的主题为《墨花飞舞，笔砚生香》，届时将展出书画学会成员及其他中小学学生的作品。

Since 1999, the Zhang Shou Shi National Calligraphy & Chinese Painting Exhibition for Primary and Secondary Schools has been an annual feature of the local school art landscape. Besides preserving the quintessence of Chinese culture, the exhibition, jointly organised with East Zone Centre of Excellence (Chinese), also aims to create public awareness in Chinese Arts by bringing it closer to people's lives. The theme of this year's exhibition is ‘Splashes of Inspirations, Expressions of Youth’. Selected works by members of the club as well as students of other primary and secondary schools will be on display at the exhibition.

The Chung Cheng High School (Main) Calligraphy & Chinese Painting Club was founded in March 1954. It aims to develop students’ interest in the Chinese culture, as well as to enhance their appreciation of the arts. Under the tutelage of instructor Mr. Teo Yew Yap, students hone their skills in this traditional art form and their works are showcased at various school events as well as external competitions and exhibitions.

Yang Menulis (They Who Write) 13 June – 11 July, Jurong Regional Library 12 July – 25 August, Woodlands Regional Library

With the advent of modern printing technology, Singapore emerged as an important centre for Malay publishing in the 19th and 20th centuries. In particular, 1917 was regarded as a watershed moment as the Nusantara experienced a boom in the production of Malay texts ranging from newspapers to commercially printed books. “They Who Write” examines the invisible role of the scribe (penyalin) and the process of copying-by-hand as the Malay publishing industry shifted towards mass production through the use of printing presses. A joint project by the National Library Board (NLB) and Malay Heritage Centre (MHC), this exhibition features manuscripts and lithographs from NLB’s Rare Material Collection, a virtual library as well as a selection of manuscripts and lithographs from NLB’s Rare Materials Collection. NLB has also produced a publication in accompaniment to the exhibition to shed more light on the process of scribing and its impact on the Malay literary movement. Interested patrons may obtain a free copy from the LKC counters.

The Straits Trading Company Limited (STC) is one of the oldest public-listed companies in Singapore, founded in 1887, when Singapore was part of the Straits Settlements under British Colonial rule. Founded upon tin mining and smelting, it was a major economic contributor to the growth and prosperity of Singapore in the early 19th century. This exhibition will showcase the illustrious history of STC and provide members of the public with a glimpse into the heritage and transformation of one of Singapore’s most iconic companies, whose growth and evolution is closely intertwined with the development and rise of modern Singapore.

The National Infocomm Security Competition (NISEC) 2013 is organised as part of the Cyber Security Awareness Day 2013 activities. NISEC aims to enhance infocomm security awareness and also recognise individuals for their ideas and contribution towards raising the adoption of infocomm security best practices. The theme for NISEC 2013 is “Security at Home and in the Workplace” with a nationwide call-toaction to secure their online identity, computers, mobile and wireless devices.

This exhibition explores the history of private zoos that existed in Singapore since the 19th century and showcases zoos that were established prior to 1973 (when The Singapore Zoo was established) as well as private collectors. The exhibition also features rare photographs of the Punggol Zoo at Punggol from Mr Lawrence Basapa, grandson of the late Mr W. L. S. Basapa (1893 – 1943) who set up the zoo.

How our names are structured is often determined by the cultures we come from. In this interactive exhibition, visitors can learn more about the naming traditions found in Singapore and what makes an ‘auspicious’ or ‘less auspicious’ name. The Thief Fuminori Nakamura, 2012 Corsair

The narrator of this novel is a pickpocket (“the Thief”). He goes about his daily business with the panache of a seasoned professional. He explains his techniques and how pickpockets work, what they look for, how they choose their victims, and how they succeed. He identifies targets by the suits they wear, and he recognizes every known brand of suit. The Thief himself had to be welldressed so that he could blend into the crowd of victims. The narrator is philosophical about his craft. He believes in an egalitarian society, and sees wealth and possession as an affront to that vision. “If there is no concept of ownership there‘d be no concept of stealing, would there? As long as there is one starving child in the world, all property is theft.” The Thief has a soft spot for children and women. When he spotted a young boy helping his mother to shoplift groceries in a supermarket, he (the Thief) went up to the boy’s mother and warned her that they (the mother and child) were being watched by the store security. He deftly helped the boy to some items and whisked him out of the store. The boy and his mother later befriended the Thief. He carried on a sexual liaison with the woman but with no romantic attachments because he keeps thinking of another woman from his past, one Saeko, who he was never to see again. His attachment to the boy and his mother was soon to become a liability because he was coerced into a series of bizarre crimes so that the boy and his mother would not be harmed.

One day, his mentor Ishikawa got him to meet a strange and dangerous underworld gangster called Kizaki. Before long, the Thief found himself in a disparate group JUly 2013 // golibrary.nlb.gov.sg

of men gathered together by Kizaki to stage a robbery of an important man. They included two men with the unusual names of “Flattop” and “Buzzcut”. The victim was not to be harmed or so the Thief was led to believe. The victim turned out to be a politician, and he was killed in the robbery. After his death, other deaths followed. Another politician committed suicide, the director of a public corporation was killed by a train when he fell onto the tracks, and the president of an IT company was also found dead. How were these deaths connected to each other? The Thief did not know the rest of the gang but the arrangements were carefully planned by Kizaki. He even made sure that the police would think that it was the work of a Chinese gang. All of them were chosen because they had no family, and they were all killed after the robbery by Kizaki – all but the Thief.

The Thief was needed for “three small jobs” for Kizaki which involved stealing from three persons. He was to steal a man’s cellphone and put it into the mailbox in an apartment. The second job was to steal an item – any item (like a lighter) – from the same man after seven days. That item must have his fingerprint. And the man must not know that it had been stolen from him. Finally, he had to steal some documents from another man, one Yonezawa. It was through this last victim that the Thief attempted to find out what Kizaki was doing and why. But was it too late?

The End of Power: From Boardrooms to Battlefields and Churches to States, Why being in Charge Isn’t What It Used to Be. Moisés Naím, 2013 Basic Books

The author was the Minister for Industry and Trade of Venezuela, and was also a former editor-inchief of “Foreign Policy”. The thesis of “The End of Power” is that power everywhere, in any form, is decaying; and this decay is changing the world. Naím knows that his assertions run contrary to popular perception. He defines power as “the ability to direct or prevent the current or future actions of other groups and individuals.” Power, he says, is what we exercise over others that make them behave in a way they would not otherwise have done. He explains that power is expressed through four different channels. First by “muscle”, namely force or coercion – “do it or else”. Secondly, through Codes, for example, rituals, practices, conventions with which we allow our behavior to be regulated. An example is the Mass that Catholics observe, and similarly, the same way Jews observe the Sabbath. Thirdly, through “Pitches”, that is, the sales pitch that acts on our psyche and influences the way we think and behave. How, for example, we rush to buy a McDonald’s breakfast after seeing its advertisement on the bus. The fourth and final channel is through rewards. People are influenced by rewards to act when they would not otherwise have done. All these channels operate in distinct ways. Next, Naím tells us that an important corollary to power is that it seeks barriers. Barriers are relevant and important to incumbent power because they stop newcomers from taking over. Barriers preserve power. So “when barriers go up and stay up, incumbents become entrenched and consolidate their control”. There are myriad examples of barriers. The two-party system in America “effectively control the electoral process and small ones cannot get a foothold”. Monopolies and autocratic and dictatorships are other examples of barriers to power. This all seemed like the world we know. Has anything changed? Naím claims that there has been a massive change. Taking 9 November 1989 (when the Berlin Wall was torn down) as the starting point, Naím claims that the world has seen and continues to see three types of revolution – the “More” revolution, the “Mobility” revolution, and the “Mentality revolution. The world is growing so rapidly that there is much more of everything today than there was pre-1989. Growth is exponential and more of everything is overpowering

power, Naím says. For those in power, the “More” revolution produces dilemmas: “How to coerce effectively when the use of force gets more costly and risky?” “How to assert authority when people’s lives are fuller and they feel less dependent and vulnerable?” “How to influence people and reward them for their loyalty in a universe where they have more choices?” The world is also getting smaller because people move about a lot more. The “Mobility” revolution allows people to circumvent power. It is not only about moving from country to country. Employees who are dissatisfied with their trade union just move on to join or form a new one. When goods and money are moved, the speed and extent in the drop in costs is incredible. Mobile phones enable people to transfer money at no cost.

The “Mentality” revolution may also be called the “Expectation” revolution. People’s expectations change and they are less patient today, less loyal, and far more demanding. Incumbents find it harder to stay in power as they find new and intolerant attitudes undercutting their power. This book ploughs through a host of situations across the world and from national politics, to the courts, to religion, and trade institutions to understand the effect of the decay of power. All that, Naím claims, has arisen because the barriers to power have been eroded by the three revolutions. He maintains, however, that there are positive consequences in the decay of power. Societies become freer, for example. The dangers and the negative aspects of the decay of power are matters for concern. In the last chapter he discusses what needs to be done. First and foremost, he says, there “is the urgent need to change the way we think and talk about power.” We need to get away from what he calls “elevator” thinking – the need to rank things and people. We need to regain trust. And, importantly, to handle “demagogic challengers who exploit disappointments with incumbents, promise change, and take advantage of the bewildering noise created by the proliferation of actors, voices, and proposals.” That is the challenge. Meeting it is the hard part.

Global warming, carbon emission and carbon footprint are terms that are often bantered about by green groups – but how much do we know exactly and what are the issues involved? In this thought-provoking documentary, Peter Byck visits a village in Alaska in its quest for clean and renewable energy consumption. Many ideas on saving the earth are shared – a trucker’s idea, though simple, makes a lot of sense. He proposes using battery power to cool or heat the driver’s cabin instead of keeping the engine running as currently practised by the transport industry. This translates into potential savings of 1 billion gallons of fuel a year! Emerging green technologies include bio-fuels through humble medium such as algae which can reap 60 times more energy than corn-based fuel – very encouraging news indeed! In addition, geo-thermal energy can also be a significant player in the green revolution. Sad to say, today, about one-fifth of earth’s carbon emission comes from deforestation. Even if we stop all carbon emission today, global warming will continue apace… why? Because we have already placed too much of it in the atmosphere! This insightful DVD reveals amazing information about some of the simple food around us that we take for granted. In this particular DVD, information on corn, wheat, salt, beer and coffee is shared. Despite covering only 5 common food and beverages around us, viewers may still be taken aback by the wonders of these seemingly ordinary food and beverages. For example, do you know that only 1% of the world’s corn harvest is edible? Or that water is able to cut through steel? This DVD even unveils the generally unknown fact that salt may be able to power our vehicles in the future. Publisher & Published Year: London: Headline Review, 2012. Call No.: English IVE The Snow Child is the debut novel by Eowyn Ivey. Set in Alaska during the 1920s, the book follows Jack and Mabel. Having recently arrived in Alaska, the childless couple are facing problems adjusting to the difficult and harsh environment. Although raised on a farm, Jack is breaking under the weight of toiling the hard and frozen soil. Mabel, on the other hand, is close to despair from the loneliness of the wilderness. Through these difficulties and the constant reminder of the miscarriage that Mabel suffered previously, the couple’s relationship starts to crumble. Just before the estranged couple decide to leave Alaska, they build a snow child outside their house. The next day, the snow child is gone. But the couple catch a glimpse of a young, blonde-haired girl playing near the trees. This little girl, who calls herself Faina is skittish about Jack and Mabel initially. But after a few encounters, she starts to trust Jack and Mabel, and in return the couple come to love her as their daughter. The relationship, however, appears to be as fragile as the snowflakes that fall on them. Faina seems to come from the pages of a fairy tale. She hunts with a red fox at her side, skims lightly across the snow, and somehow survives alone in the Alaskan wilderness. This relationship is tested when Jack and Mabel grow closer to their neighbours, the spunky household of Ester and George. The novel is beautifully written. Inspired by the Russian fairytale “The Snow Maiden”, this book is a skilful blend of the realities of life and the magic of fairytales. What is equally enthralling about this book is Ivey’s language. Using a writing style that is crisp, clean, simple and beautiful, there is little doubt that the reader will not only be absorbed into the story but feel the weight of the axe Jack wields, the silence of the cabin as Mabel cleans the dishes, the footsteps Faina makes as she skips in the snow, and the majestic view of the snow-capped mountains of the last frontier. Wu Teh Yao Memorial Lecture and Book Launch of “The Story of the Stones” 2.00 pm – 5.00 pm The Pod, Level 16, National Library Building

This talk outlines the discoveries that the authors of Chinese Epigraphy of Singapore: 1819 –1911 (Kenneth Dean and Hue Guan Thye, Singapore: NUS Press, 2013) had made while collecting, editing and translating the inscriptions found in Chinese temples, native-place associations, clan halls, and other institutions of early Singapore. Many of these inscriptions feature magnificent calligraphy and provide an invaluable record of Singapore’s past. These inscriptions reveal a diverse, but incredibly innovative and highly determined set of communities, working to flourish far from their original homeland. The more recent inscriptions show how multiple networks were established across dialect groups within Singapore and with other regions across Southeast Asia. These sources provide another way to tell a vital part of the story of Singapore. This programme is organised by the Department of Chinese Studies, National University of Singapore.

Campaign City: Life In Posters Lee Kong Chian Reference Library, Level 11, National Library Building

From Sharity Elephant to Singa Lion, Two is Enough to Clean & Green, campaigns and their mascots have become an idiosyncratic and often nostalgic part of Singapore’s national heritage. No other country has embraced campaigning as much as we have. To highlight this slice of Singapore identity to the local community, the National Library of Singapore, in partnership with independent art curator Alan Oei presents the exhibition Campaign City: Life In Posters. This exhibition features 40 of Singapore’s leading artists, architects and designers and 10 local art students. The participants, getting inspiration and information from the library’s and the national archives vast collection of campaign posters and campaign heritage material, created artworks reflective of their own personal memories and/or impressions of Singapore campaigning, past and present. These artworks are exhibited along with highlights from the Library’s campaign poster collection. Selected spaces in the National Library Building will also be used in novel ways to convey the rich histories behind Singapore’s campaigns.

125 Years of Progress and Transformation at Straits Trading Promenade, Level 9, National Library Building

The Straits Trading Company Limited (STC) is one of the oldest public-listed companies in Singapore, founded in 1887, when Singapore was part of the Straits Settlements, under British Colonial rule. Founded on tin mining and smelting industries, the company was a major economic contributor to the growth and prosperity of Singapore in the early 19th century. This exhibition showcases the illustrious history of STC and provides a glimpse into the heritage and transformation of one of Singapore’s most iconic companies, whose growth and evolution are closely intertwined with the development and rise of modern Singapore.

Parting Glances: Singapore’s Evolving Spaces Promenade, Level 7 National Library Building

Parting Glances: Singapore’s Evolving Spaces takes viewers on an evocative p. 43 visual journey through six iconic neighbourhoods that are poised on the brink of change. Whether it is due to redevelopment to make way for future industry and housing or due to shifting demographics, these spaces will be forever altered within the coming decade. As a growing population and a larger human footprint are anticipated to emerge in the decades ahead, the need to immortalise Singapore’s humanity and heritage through words and photography becomes paramount. With an aim to capture and preserve history as it is unfolding, Parting Glances brings Singapore’s delicate balancing act of forging the future while preserving the past to centre stage through these 24 photos and the accompanying launch of a hardcover book of the same title. The locales featured in this exhibit include Kampong Lorong Buangkok, Seletar Camp, Pulau Ubin, People’s Park, MacPherson, and Queenstown. These photos were all taken between 2009 and 2013 in a project supported by the National Heritage Board’s Heritage Industry Incentive Programme (HI2P). This exhibition is dedicated to those who generously shared their homes, workplaces and personal memories about these fascinating – and gradually disappearing – enclaves in Singapore.

Roots: Tracing Family Histories National Library Gallery, Level 10 National Library Building

The family is an important way in which societies structure themselves. This exhibition explores the quest of four Singaporean families to discover their histories. Digging through documents at home, in the library and various archives, they have drawn up their family’s genealogies. The stories uncovered by the families, while unique, resonate with many Singapore families. Aside from family stories, the exhibition will also feature photographs, recipes, heirlooms and personal objects passed down through the generations. The exhibition showcases the many resources available worldwide in researching family roots, including the now-popular DNA testing.

“From Books to Bytes: The Story of the National Library” tells the story of the National Library of Singapore. Throughout our history, the library has been an integral part of Singapore’s cultural and social fabric as well as its residents. The exhibition traces the founding, development and growth of the National Library of Singapore from 1823 till present. Learn interesting snippets of the library’s rich history and how its function has evolved with the learning needs of the nation.

The Donors Gallery Lee Kong Chian Reference Library, Level 10, National Library Building

The Donors Gallery was set up to display a sample selection of items donated to the National Library with the hope of creating a sense of rootedness through the preservation of local heritage content and fulfilling the library´s function of being the national memory and repository of Singapore heritage materials in all formats. It is also hoped that more Singaporeans will be encouraged to donate their heritage collections to the National Library.

Singapore Literary Pioneers Promenade, Level 11, National Library Building

The gallery displays the books, letters, calligraphic works, manuscripts, photographs and portraits of Singapore’s literary pioneers. Some prominent writers have also donated their pens, typewriters and literary awards. In addition, visitors can appreciate audio and video recordings of the writers in two multimedia screens.

Resources in Genealogy Research Have you ever thought about where your ancestors originated, when and how they arrived in Singapore, who they married, the number of children they had, where they stayed and what they did for a living? Or have you wished to trace your family tree but don’t know where to start? For the beginner, tracing one’s ancestors can be daunting, but with a little hard work and some basic guides on family history research, anyone can embark on this rewarding journey. The Lee Kong Chian Reference Library (LKCRL) has the resources to help you on this journey, particularly the resources where you can find vital information such as names, dates and places. For example, if you are of Eurasian descent, the LKCRL has guides that discuss the origins of the Singapore-Eurasians, the plight of the Eurasian community during the Japanese Occupation and many more. Jiapu (Family genealogy) is a type of pictorial publication that records the history and activities of a Chinese clan. It is one of the three major types of records that documents the history of the Chinese, with the other two being official history records and local gazetteers. The Lee Kong Chian Reference Library has a collection of jiapu, which are mostly private publications (non-purchasable in the commercial market) acquired through public donations. In our Chinese genealogy resource guide, you can find a selective listing of the jiapu, local gazetteers and biographies available in the library that are useful in searching family roots. In addition, the library also collects bibliographies of jiapu collections published by other major libraries in China. This guide also provides selected titles that provide a historical overview of the Chinese society in Singapore.
