The Biography of Artist John French I was born in Santa Fe, NM way back in 1970. When I was three years old, I watched my aunt draw a picture of me, and I've been hooked since. I was an Air Force brat, and spent four years of my youth in Italy while my Dad was stationed there; many of my formative years were spent viewing the art and architecture of the Renaissance. After our Italian tour we moved to the remote, beautiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I studied art with Bill Alexander, and Dr. Thomas Capuccio at Northern Michigan University. In the mid-1990s, I began painting the dramatic landscapes and waterscapes of the Great Lakes area. I’ve always felt attached to New Mexico. I visit as often as I can, and each trip renews my awe and enchantment with the landscape, art, culture and food! I love to paint the amazing places I experience anywhere I travel, and few places are as amazing and as inspiring as my home state, New Mexico. Since 2009, I’ve proudly served on the Board of Directors for The Marquette Symphony Orchestra. In June 2013, I was honored by being elected as the President of the MSO's Board of Directors and served two terms. Besides being a full time artist, I'm also a full time husband and dad. I've also worked at RTI Surgical, formerly known as Pioneer Surgical, in Marquette, MI since July of 2000.
Since 2001, I've been represented by The Moonshine Art Gallery in Michigamme,MI There, I've been part of several successful multi-artist shows since 2009. In 2009 through 2011 I showed and sold my work at The Outback Art Fair in Marquette, MI. In 2013 I was juried into the Lake Superior Art Association’s Members’ show. I was awarded the Duane DeLoach First Time Exhibitor Award. In 2013 I was juried into the prestigious Art on the Rocks Fine Art Fair for the first time, in Marquette, MI. In 2014, six of my original paintings were purchased for the permanent collection of the St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital in Pontiac, MI. In August of 2015 I was accepted into the Manzano Mountain Art Council “20 Years of Enchantment” group show in Mountainair, New Mexico. In November of 2015 I was accepted to show and sell at the Marquette Arts and Culture Center Holiday Art Show. In 2016, I was juried into the Lake Superior Art Association’s Members’ show. In May of 2016 I was accepted into the Manzano Mountain Art Council “Celebrating New Mexico” group show in Mountainair, New Mexico, where my work was honored with Best in Show. In July 2016 I was juried into the prestigious Art on the Rocks Fine Art Fair, in Marquette, MI In July of 2016 two of my paintings were juried into the Taos Art Museum’s August Night Gala exhibit. In August of 2016 I was accepted into the Manzano Mountain Art Council “21 Years of Enchantment” group show in Mountainair, New Mexico.
