An introduction to: Short Story A company that specialises in storytelling through giftware, all made with hand and heart. Short Story evolved in late 2009 when a small gift box of special Japanese papers gave life to a childhood hobby and marked the beginning of an amazing creative venture for both William and Carolyn. Being their own harshest critics, William and Carolyn spent many months creating, innovating, cutting and folding, testing and trialling until after many hours of work, their passion and vision culminated in the creation of their first signature frame. It was simple and tasteful, and consisted of beautifully hand-folded origami butterflies in a box frame. From here on the range grew to include gift cards, paper jewellery, stationary, soy candles, string lights, and they are constantly striving to create innovative products of the highest quality. Paper is a common theme in most of Short Story’s products, and much time is spent sourcing the most intricate papers from all over the world. Short Story is bringing back the intimacy and personal touch that was once associated to card writing and paper alike. Coming from diverse backgrounds and going against the grain to start their enterprise took courage, spirit and determination. Therefore, it is a second passion for the duo to design stunning products with an inspirational story to tell. We want to breathe life into inanimate objects and allow people to discover the stories in each product, to encourage storytelling and to generate great conversations.” Welcome to “Short Story”. We invite you to share our passion for stunning home-ware and storytelling alike, and to “share your story” for art and the rarity of what’s handmade.

About ArtSHINE

What is the OPIC™ Planning System? OPIC™ refines goal setting and action planning for artists, designers, crafters and creative professionals. Using OPIC™, you’ll establish detailed goals that are realistic, achievable, exciting and inspirational. Drawing on our experience as business lifestyle coaches working with creative clients, we wanted to create an easyto-use system for the ArtSHINE community.

ArtSHINE is a specialist coaching program for artists, artisans, crafters, designers, fashion labels, and all professionals working in the creative communities. Working extensively with clients, and also drawing upon the knowledge of experienced industry professionals, Vinh Van Lam & Stuart Horrex have worked to create and develop the ArtSHINE program as part of their commitment to support the development of business and entrepreneurial skills of artists, artisans, and all creative professionals. ArtSHINE is here to provide you with all the skills, experience, and support you need to make your artistic dreams a reality. Do what you love to do... Honour your creative spirit... And let it “Shine.” ArtSHINE is all about defining, creating, and pursuing your authentic life path. For more information: www.artshine.com.au

OPIC™ motivates, empowers and helps in any creative practice. It defines your strengths and weaknesses; helps you succeed in key business aspects; refreshes your desire, passion and purpose; gets you organized; and helps you achieve and even surpass your life goals.

The principles of OPIC™ Objective: Achieve those goals. Write them in the present tense as if you have achieved them. Planning: Describe your goals in sequential order, breaking them down into small steps. Implementation: Plan, outline and delegate tasks to complete each step. Detail who will take action, when, and if the action was completed. Commitment: This is critical to completing goals. Focus on why you’ve set out to achieve them and how you’ll overcome challenges, and record the key ‘wins’ in achieving those goals.

OPIC™ how-to guide

Creative people are different. We don’t work the 9–5 grind and rarely have daily tasks to complete. Our challenge is how to use our time effectively. So we’ve designed the OPIC™ planner, a how-to guide that helps you make the transition between you and your art and design business. Get the full version - a printed guide for reference as you read this. You can download the full version on the artshine website: www.artshine.com.au OPIC™ Yearly Planner 2015 Define your “main life areas” and use the yearly planner to map out what you want to achieve. Set several reminders in the year and actively review the goals you achieve. Create new ones and move on from those that are no longer useful. OPIC™ 90-Day Planner A customized guide that helps you focus on your business goals in three key areas: WORK IN your art and design practice: the day-to-day work in the business. Making the product and delivering the service. WORK ON your art and design practice: think of this as the daily management role – planning, business logistics, paying the bills, sales projections, and

running promotional and marketing campaigns. WORK ABOVE your art and design practice: Get an overview, look at the broader picture. Ask questions. What’s the vision, the long-term strategy? Where are you now, and where do you hope to go? Is your work effective and in line with your desire, passion and purpose? Monthly OPIC™ Planner Having set your yearly goals, assign them on a monthly planner. Now you’re ready to move into the planning process. Our planner is a great way to keep you on track, inspired and motivated. Weekly OPIC™ Planner This enables you to check on the goals for the week. Plan out,

pencil in and achieve all the tasks you aim to complete, while adapting it daily as changes arise. Daily OPIC™ Planner This keeps you focused on the three “Must Do’s” of the day. Allocate these tasks from your weekly planner. This gets you into a positive working habit and helps you accomplish your goals quicker, giving you a greater sense of purpose. OPIC™ Achievement Planner Celebrate your successes. Set reminders to update your record of achievements. This is a fantastic way to toast your accomplishments as you hit them along the way. OPIC™ Yearly Planner 2016 Now that you’re motivated,

embrace OPIC™ – a system that empowers, challenges, inspires and organises you, and helps you achieve your goals. Now map out your future year. Want to learn more? Go to ArtSHINE.com.au and subscribe to ArtSHINE’s free e-newsletter which is full of inspiration and business tips for your Art & Design practice. ArtSHINE proudly supports Lymphoma Australia. 2015 Feng Shui and Intuitive Predictions From January till end of March 2015 Connections, connections - you are meeting plenty of like-minded people. They inspire you, they give you opportunities for a career boost and you feel blessed! Nevertheless, you know you have a choice - grasp those opportunities because your heart is in them or wait for potential better ones! This is a period where you judge and feel judged. Why’s it so important what others think of you? Be who you are and follow your truth for the highest good of all. Your ‘judging’ addiction will soon disappear, and a happy life will quickly take off. Feng Shui tip: To receive and give plenty of genuine help in your life: keep the room located immediately on the right-hand side of your entry door as clean and uncluttered as possible. Thanks to him, my whole fitness regime was completely overhauled. At ArtSHINE, we’re all dedicated to healthy lifestyles and instilling challenges and personal goals around health, exercise and diet as part of coaching our clients. So that’s why we are more than delighted to announce that Chris has agreed to become ArtSHINE’s new health & fitness expert. He’s also keen to contribute his expertise to the ArtSHINE community, so he’s agreed to share his secrets, tips and exercises for staying healthy and fit while enabling you to concentrate on the Art & Design practice. Chris is an exercise physiologist, personal trainer and tutor with the Australian Fitness Network. He received his Masters in Clinical Exercise Physiology from Charles Sturt University in 2012 after receiving his Bachelor degree in 2010. Great catch up with Anthony, Mum & Dad. Love the new Yum Cha place in Kingsford, well spotted by Anthony & Nick. Very pleased with today as I have achieved my 3 must do. Must do the Artshine article selection tomorrow. My wins for today was the 3 must do tasks and My gain was the Artshow at Balmain, it was very stimulating and inspring. What I’m Grateful for today is a loving partner and grateful for the people I connected today.

Solo exhibit focuses on Chinese New Year Internationally acclaimed artist and photographer Carrie Webster will be hosting her solo exhibition ‘Year of the Sheep’ at the ArtSHINE Gallery to coincide with the Chinese New Year in February 2015. Carrie presents a vivid reimagining of the Chinese horoscope with a 12-piece collection. The solo exhibition will launch Thursday February 19, the start of the Chinese New Year. The Year of the Sheep, according to astrology, will be marked by peace and harmony. The collection features every animal sign in childishly surreal landscapes and settings inspired by the characteristics of that sign, with the focus on the gentle and compassionate sheep. Each piece has been created through digitally manipulating photographs she has taken of fruits and vegetables. The strong ox, for example, is created using a beetroot, while horses are shaped from sweet potato and spring onion.

“I love the idea millions of people believe they are intrinsically connected to their astrology animal, and that this gives them hope, guidance and a framework for living,” Carrie says. Webster’s sometimes dark and always fantastically whimsical work has been likened to that of filmmaker Tim Burton; appealing to young imaginations and the young at heart, with its narrative style inspired by folklore and fables. Carrie works and lives in Sydney. Her recent work has been selected as finalist art work in international online photographic and art competitions. More recently she was selected to participate in the prestigious Head On Photography Festival in May 2014. A solo exhibition of Carrie’s

work was exhibited at the Angel Restaurant in Freshwater, Sydney, in April. She completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts at COFA in her early twenties, and has since worked in the field of graphic and web design. She also has a Masters degree in Information Architecture. Solo Exhibition @ArtSHINE Gallery From Thursday 12 February to Saturday 28 February 2015 Opening Saturday 14 February 15 from 3.30 – 6.30pm

Lucy-Marie Claire (Eaton)

What inspires you in your business? I’m inspired by the visual and the dynamic element of dance. I’m motivated by the potential materialising of thought and mood into the body.

Lucy Marie Easton in her studio “Dance Dr”. What are the most common issues young dancers at Dance Dr. have? Young dancers have very different perceptions of their skills to the reality. I see it as my responsibility to enlighten them to their strengths and nurture their weaknesses. I see awareness of our weaknesses as a positive thing and prefer not to leave them unspoken – as most of the time, the capability is there and it’s their mentality that’s restricting them. How do you keep yourself motivated and focused in business? I often remind myself of the Dance Dr. mantra – to REINVENT dance at its CREATIVE and ATHLETIC peak. If I find myself pursuing something other than that, I know to bring myself and my team back to our home base.

What inspires you when you choreograph a routine? I have a very musical background and when I listen to music I see movement. Tales my mother told me “Tales my mother told me” This is the first of a collection of stories my mother told me when I was a child. Each has meaning, wisdom or insight. I hope they inspire you and that you can find ways to apply them to your life and business, as I do now. My mother is an inspiring woman, the best mother and a great business woman, too.

Each tale is recalled in every ArtSHINE issue. We have 12 stories, each in two volumes, and you can view them at ArtSHINE.com.au n

Tale One: “Help one, you help thousands” When I was a child, I learnt things through my mother’s eyes, gaining wisdom and insights, naturally and unconsciously. In the 70′s, my parents had a manufacturing business and were always taking in workers. They treated them as family, giving them shelter, food, clothes, jobs and even money to help their families, too.

I vividly remember one particular aunty who came to see mum regularly, as she always brought things to sell. They were items you could buy from a local supermarket, such as pickles and sauces. But mum always bought from her and gave her more money than the items were worth.

Most of the young workers came from country towns where there were no work opportunities. We also had many elderly women visit us on a regular basis and we called them aunty this or that.

I didn’t understand this, so one day I asked her, “Why are we always taking care of someone else’s children or giving more money than a product is worth - even when old aunty told you that?”

At the time, I was really inquisitive and wanted to know what the relationships between us and those aunties were. It turned out some were related to our family and most lived in the same village where our grandparents were born. They often came to see mum to get a job for their children or grandchildren, or money to support their family.

“When you help someone you’re actually helping him and the people connected to him, like his family. By giving him a job, you’re giving him a future and he can offer a brighter future for his family too. “Aunty is a widow. Uncle passed away and left her with 10 children. She’s a good mother who works hard to raise them. Her business is visiting people’s homes and selling food items.

She smiled at me and stroked my head, and said, “When you help one, you help thousands.” Puzzled, I asked what she meant.

“Buying things from her puts food on the table for her children. They can go to school and have a better future. Then Aunty can retire and her children can look after her. Every act has a consequence, good or bad. This is the principle behind the concept of karma.”

Mother explained: “Remember, we’re connected with everything around us. When you hurt things or people around you, it harms you back. When you help others, you also help yourself.

We can apply this to our business too by helping others, you also help your business. A great example is when you’re in a networking event where you connect with other businesses ArtSHINE

and form a bond with them, and then get an opportunity to help them by referring others to their business. In turn, they refer business to you. Offer your expertise, such as teaching or running an art class or a creative workshop where you share your skills and knowledge with others. It gives you a chance to connect with and inspire your audience.

Artworks page 75 and 76 by Artist: Anthony Van Lam

In offering your expertise, you’re exposed to many people who resonate with what you do and they’ll buy your product, use your service and tell others about you.

The message I learnt from my mother’s tale is, when you open your hands to help others, make sure you don’t expect anything in return. You help people because you want to. You’ll be surprised; when you need help, there’ll be others who will gladly help you. Believe me, I’ve experienced this many times and I’m very grateful for it. I hope this tale can inspire you to look at your life and business with new eyes. “Those who are free of resentful thoughts surely find inner peace” Buddha n

Design your business lifestyle At ArtSHINE we talk to clients about designing their business lifestyle. How you can create a business from the passion that you have, and how you can create that business to fit your lifestyle. As coaches, we approach this by aligning your creativity and encouraging you to tap into your desire, passion and purpose. “We all have different desires, passions and purposes, but if we don’t discover what they are and what we are here for, then we will live passively and unfulfilled.” Vinh Van Lam Desire: Enables you to express a wish or crave for something to fulfil your life. LOVE WHAT YOU DO! Passion: Is an irresistible action/ drive for something that you desire intensely. FOLLOW YOUR DESIRE BY SETTING GOALS. Purpose: Is a result of an action intentionally undertaken.

Purpose is a very specific task that moves you in the right direction. It gives you the reason to complete tasks so you can move closer to your desire. Passion and purpose are actions taken on the way to dreams. Keep in mind, your DPP (Desire, Passion and Purpose) must be in harmony so you can attain what you want and get to where you want to be. Desire will generate the craving to define your passion. Your passion will give you the drive and motivation to find the real purpose of why you want to do what you love, and align it with that purpose.

“Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life” Confucius Unlike a traditional business, business lifestyle isn’t focused on financial gains, but on creating a foundation to support your goals. It’s a way of thinking that focuses around your passion and personality. It’s a business process that thrives on freedom and creativity, where you’re doing what you love. It makes you the captain of your ship. The key is to build a positive cash flow and pursue personal goals with the profits of your passion. The reward: freedom. n

Knowledge is not POWER! I attended a seminar recently about how to lose fat and stay healthy, and there was a fellow attendee there who knew all the answers to the questions that the fitness coach raised. I was impressed by his knowledge, but noticed he was very obese. After the seminar, I thought about him. If he had all the knowledge to stay fit and healthy, why hadn’t he applied it? There may be a quite straightforward reason, but it seemed strange. I came to the conclusion that knowledge is not power; it’s only potential power. Implement that knowledge and you gain real power. As business coaches we meet many business owners and learn from our conversations with them. Some demonstrate great knowledge about how businesses work and seem to know all the answers to every question. The “I know syndrome” creeps in along with why they’re not

performing to the level they should. They have all the answers, some valid, but mostly pure excuses! So, if you have all the knowledge, why not apply it? If you know how to run a great business lifestyle, why aren’t you doing it? As your coach, I want to challenge you and make you realise that if you won’t implement what you’ve learnt, nothing will change. Great knowledge is one thing, applying it is another. Another example is the people who attend all the self-help seminars and buy the latest motivational book. At ArtSHINE we call them the “collectors” as they love to collect information and top up their knowledge, but won’t apply what they have learnt.

Why? They fall into the trap/fear mode: they stay where they are and don’t move forward. There are those who have knowledge and don’t know how to apply it. Others have a lack of discipline as they have a big ‘to do’ list - a list that becomes so overwhelming they build up fear and confusion, and end up procrastinating. We all know people who look busy but produce poor results. When we challenge them, their answers are that they’re busy with something else. Their list isn’t a list on paper, but in their head. The best way to take action? Written goals: plan all your lists on paper. Writing them down will keep track of where you are and steer you to your desired end. n
