About ArtSHINE

What is the OPIC™ Planning System?

OPIC™ refines goal setting and action planning for artists, designers, crafters and creative professionals. Using OPIC™, you’ll establish detailed goals that are realistic, achievable, exciting and inspirational. Drawing on our experience as business lifestyle coaches working with creative clients, we wanted to create an easy-to-use system for the ArtSHINE community.

ArtSHINE is a specialist coaching program for artists, artisans, crafters, designers, fashion labels, and all professionals working in the creative communities. Working extensively with clients, and also drawing upon the knowledge of experienced industry professionals, Vinh Van Lam & Stuart Horrex have worked to create and develop the ArtSHINE program as part of their commitment to support the development of business and entrepreneurial skills of artists, artisans, and all creative professionals. ArtSHINE is here to provide you with all the skills, experience, and support you need to make your artistic dreams a reality. Do what you love to do... Honour your creative spirit... And let it “Shine.” ArtSHINE is all about defining, creating, and pursuing your authentic life path. For more information: www.artshine.com.au

OPIC™ motivates, empowers and helps in any creative practice. It defines your strengths and weaknesses; helps you succeed in key business aspects; refreshes your desire, passion and purpose; gets you organized; and helps you achieve and even surpass your life goals.

The principles of OPIC™ Objective: Achieve those goals. Write them in the present tense as if you have achieved them. Planning: Describe your goals in sequential order, breaking them down into small steps. Implementation: Plan, outline and delegate tasks to complete each step. Detail who will take action, when, and if the action was completed. Commitment: This is critical to completing goals. Focus on why you’ve set out to achieve them and how you’ll overcome challenges, and record the key ‘wins’ in achieving those goals.

OPIC™ how-to guide

Creative people are different. We don’t work the 9–5 grind and rarely have daily tasks to complete. Our challenge is how to use our time effectively. So we’ve designed the OPIC™ planner, a how-to guide that helps you make the transition between you and your art and design business. Get the full version - a printed guide for reference as you read this. You can download the full version on the artshine website: www.artshine.com.au OPIC™ Yearly Planner 2015 Define your “main life areas” and use the yearly planner to map out what you want to achieve. Set several reminders in the year and actively review the goals you achieve. Create new ones and move on from those that are no longer useful. OPIC™ 90-Day Planner A customized guide that helps you focus on your business goals in three key areas: WORK IN your art and design practice: the day-to-day work in the business. Making the product and delivering the service. WORK ON your art and design practice: think of this as the daily management role – planning, business logistics, paying the bills, sales projections, and

running promotional and marketing campaigns. WORK ABOVE your art and design practice: Get an overview, look at the broader picture. Ask questions. What’s the vision, the long-term strategy? Where are you now, and where do you hope to go? Is your work effective and in line with your desire, passion and purpose? Monthly OPIC™ Planner Having set your yearly goals, assign them on a monthly planner. Now you’re ready to move into the planning process. Our planner is a great way to keep you on track, inspired and motivated. Weekly OPIC™ Planner This enables you to check on the goals for the week. Plan out, pencil in and achieve all the tasks you aim to complete, while adapting it daily as changes arise.

Daily OPIC™ Planner This keeps you focused on the three “Must Do’s” of the day. Allocate these tasks from your weekly planner. This gets you into a positive working habit and helps you accomplish your goals quicker, giving you a greater sense of purpose. OPIC™ Achievement Planner Celebrate your successes. Set reminders to update your record of achievements. This is a fantastic way to toast your accomplishments as you hit them along the way. OPIC™ Yearly Planner 2016 Now that you’re motivated, embrace OPIC™ – a system that empowers, challenges, inspires and organises you, and helps you achieve your goals. Now map out your future year.

“Honnour your creative spirit... and let it “SHINE!”

2015 Feng Shui and Intuitive Predictions Monthly Prediction: September 2015 Add clear intents and joy into your work. Visualise the end result and stay creative. Whenever in doubt, repeat a positive mantra that will bring you back on the road to success. Choose your words carefully - for example: “The Universe is looking after me” or “Everything happens in divine timing” or “I am lucky doing the work I love”... Feng Shui Tip: Write the mantra that you will generate with coloured ink on a quality paper and display it prominently. Your unconscious mind will scan it many times per day and soon you will feel a shift in you. Keep seeing and saying this mantra for a few weeks for better results. Kick Start your Spring Training

Start your health and fitness regime now and by summer your stomach is flat, your bum is perky and your guns are ripped! As the days start to grow longer, the nights shorter and the weather warmer we invariably see a dramatic influx of people rushing back to the gym to work on that summer body. And it makes sense - start your health and fitness regime now and by summer your stomach is flat, your bum is perky and your guns are ripped! However, there are several things that you should avoid if you are going to attain that dream summer body. 1. Don’t place your expectations too high. Most people who reenter the gym in September have not trained for several months, so don’t aim to be at the gym 6 times per week as you will only disappoint yourself. Aim for 2-3

sessions per week to start. 2. Have a plan. This might mean that you need to employ a Personal Trainer for the next few weeks or months - but in my time I have seen the best of intentions become undone through a lack of planning and understanding of what is required to achieve your goals. 3. Address your eating. 1 million sit ups per day will not be enough to overcome a poor and inappropriate diet. If your goal is weight loss and toning than this should be at the top of your list and not third. Again, a Personal Trainer will help you put together a plan and give you some ideas, or if you would prefer book yourself

Chris Dounis - M: 0432 179 939 Your Fitness Coach in to see a Nutritionist who will put together a plan tailored specifically to you. But more than anything - don’t give up! Rome was not built in one day and neither was a beautiful body. You will fall and make mistakes along the way, but if you persevere and have a good plan the hard work will pay off! Yours in health. Chris Dounis.

9 September 7 October 2015 Nine shades of art! Nine artists embracing the “Art Medium” in the Chippendale district. It may not be ‘50 Shades of Grey’ but it’ll be certainly be nine colourful shades of the art medium in a new, exciting exhibition at one of Sydney’s art galleries. Simply termed ‘Art Medium’, it is the latest edgy offering this September hosted by the ArtSHINE Gallery, in the Chippendale district. Nine artists will demonstrate the use of different media in art and how art has no limit and can never be defined by boundaries. They will highlight how the use of different elements of art and materials can re-define the public pro-conceptions of what art is about – and it ain’t all about paintings! Artists taking part are: Taejin Lee: an artist in paper. He uses paper to shape images into 3D objects

Aylie McDowall: an illustrator who creates powerful female images on fabric Anthony Van Lam: fashion designer and artist who will be collaborate with Dance Dr and music composer Patrick Jillet for the show. Lucy Marie-Claire: a choreographer who will initiate the dance to one of Patrick Jillet’s music tracks for her dancers who will be wearing AVL Designs’ dance wear. Dance Dr: a Sydney-based dance training and performance company, headed by LucyMaire Claire, for young, elite dancers beginning their careers. Her dancers will perform their upcoming show Dollhouse: a series that peeks into the internal stories/souls of dolls . Patrick Jillet: He is a Sydney based contemporary music composer and landscape photographer. Juan Ruiz-Coello & Olivia Serre (Time Flys): He recycles and repurposes old objects into

functional ones. She is an interior designer full of innovative designs. French background, she loves sharing her passion for old antique objects and design. Their adventures start from objects, which are more than 100 years old, and create pieces which we can value and appreciate. Matteo Berna: He is a freelance visual artist currently based in Sydney. Born in Italy, Matteo studied Architecture at the Politecnico of Milan but he worked with art during all his life. Co-work your way to success Co-working is one of the best ways to get the best out of you and your business: whether it’s a macro, micro or medium company. So why not become part of the co-working community today and see your business grow? Here’s why you should move your business into a shared office: Flexibility: Co-working has never been easier. You can rent a desk, office or meeting room by the hour, day, month or year. As your business grows you can add more workstations to bring the team together or reduce them when your business downsizes. Professional business address: First impressions are integral to building business credibility. By co-working with Office Hub you instantly gain a place to call work and an address to put on your business cards. Interaction with others: You will be surrounded by other like-minded businesspeople. The social interaction, networking and collaboration benefits help build

a business and keep sole traders sane. Start with one desk: All agreements are on a per workstation basis. If you are one of the 2 million small businesses out there you can get a professional business address without the need to lease an entire office. No capital outlay: There’s no need to buy furniture or spend a fortune fitting out someone else’s property as all of this is included in one low fixed monthly fee. Transparent pricing: Everything is included. There are no hidden variable charges. The monthly fee is for the cost of your workstation. Most centres have a renewal price guarantee giving you peace of mind for what it will cost if you decide to renew your agreement. IT&T: Unlimited business grade

broadband is supplied free. We also have access to a state-of-theart Hosted PBX telephone system for telephone support. If you need to switch your phone numbers we can port them to our PBX system or we can issue a number for you. Around the clock access: We allow 24/7 access to your dedicated workstation allowing night owls to work around the clock. Want to learn more? It’s as simple as 1... 2... 3... FEATURED ARTIST

Denise Campbell

1. In 5 words, who are you? Nature observer and creative interpreter 2. Where do you get your inspiration from when you paint ? I am inspired by the surrounding landscapes and nature. The Australian desert has been my focus and the colours and life within it. I love to see it from an aerial perspective and so photograph a lot when I take flights above it in small craft. It’s scarred/worn history provides amazing and unexpected images. Even now in Spain, the landscape around me has a lot of rugged beauty, which inspires a totally different image in both pallet and features. 3. What are one or two favourite recent projects? One of the shows that I created ’Sharing My View’ was a project that I truly enjoyed, because I was pushing my boundaries. It pushed me further into an abstracted view from the air (not easy for me) of the patterning in landscape. This was a very successful exhibition and one with which I felt very happy. The other is a recent project, here in Spain, a wall installation that is created from natural elements of my new, surrounding landscape. In walking the landscape, getting a better understanding of my surrounds and differences, I gathered these objects to give me an insight into the way the land is worked and how it bears the elements, how it regenerates within the extremes of the climate. I feel that I was trying to capture a little of the spirit of this place. It was

Detail: “Rippling Sands” 123x74cms Oilstick on French Handmade Paper a truly satisfying project that I wish to continue to develop. 4. What creative processes are involved in your creation? After finding an inspiring landscape, I look closely at composition possibilities before deciding on the positioning of light within the image. I sketch the basic layout onto the canvas. Then deciding on the pallet which I will use to bring the image to life, I start with undercolours that will aid in lifting the light into the painting. Layering is a strong element of my process, particularly when working with acrylic, as is variation in methods of paint application to achieve a best result. 5. How do you keep yourself motivated and focused? I keep myself motivated and focused by always setting targets, whether it be scheduling of an exhibition,

which I have to work towards, or by adding new galleries to my distribution network, also requiring stock. My philosophy with painters’ block is to always turn up to the studio, even reading magazines can inspire a move towards picking up a brush. There are many distraction in this business, when you have to do most of it for yourself eg wrap, deliver, invoice, promotion, etc, which means that the focus must not be lost on the most important element –the creation of product. I focus on the other, when I need a rest from the easel. 6. What is the most important lesson in life that you have learned? To be true to myself in all that I do ie. to my instinct, to my values and to my beliefs. Visit the ArtSHINE gallery to see Denise’s artworks. ArtSHINE

Gallery’s “Calendar Challenge” to artists ARTISTS are being urged to think ahead to the New Year after a Sydney gallery threw down the gauntlet to them to help create a calendar for 2016. The first ever “Draw me a Calendar” competition is being organized by the ArtSHINE Gallery in the Chippendale Creative Precinct

Artists need to pay an entry fee of $30.00 for one submission or $50.00 for two artworks. Entries need to be on a 20cm x 20cm 240gsm art paper.

The gallery is appealing to artists and designers to submit works with an opportunity to be among the 12 selected to represent the months of 2016.

For more information about the competition, please visit our website or send an email to gallery@artshine.com.au

Gallery founder Vinh Van Lam said: “We encourage participants to be creative and come up with artworks that are striking and suitable for a calendar. We want to achieve a consistent look so that all artworks complement each other.”

The artworks will be selected by judges, with one artwork being chosen for the front cover of the ArtSHINE 2016 calendar. Selected winners will be unveiled at a gallery opening night on Saturday October 7.

Morning thoughts, be a success all day Successful people who have the competitive edge all day long have one thing in common: they’re early-risers and strategically think their day ahead. The early morning is “ Me Time” a chance to lay out your priorities for the day and make progress against them, before others demand your time and attention. It puts you firmly in control of each day. That’s why early risers have the competitive advantage over everyone else. They tackle the day while others hit the snooze button. Unconvinced? #2 NUTRITION MUST-DO: KNOW HOW TO SNACK. Many of us, in particular when we are super busy at work, experience blood sugar ups and downs, which have a direct impact on how we perform during the day. Healthy delicious snacks (in addition to never skipping breakfast – see article in the previous issue) are critical to maintain blood sugar, help loose weight and stabilise mood and level of stress. The trick for snacks is to plan a little so that you have access to these healthy foods at all times, especially when you feel the urge to eat and when you’re not at home. Then you can make it to your lunch and evening meal without impulsively eating any food because that’s the only thing available or getting overstressed because you’re starving. All your snacks will have to be made of good fat, clean proteins and complex low GI carbs. Forget about your ‘healthy’ muesli bar or your fruit juice, which are

actually sugar bombs! Among these 5 delicious waistline-friendly options, I’m sure you’ll find a few you’ll love: Snack 1: goat cheese + 1 pear Snack 2: almond butter + 1 brown rice cake Snack 3: boiled organic egg + Dijon mustard + natural sea salt Snack 4: hummus (avoid those containing canola oil at all cost) + carrot/celery sticks Snack 5: home-made fruit compote + organic milk kefir (or yoghurt) Want more ideas? Being too positive also needs reality check It’s great being an optimist as you view the world in a positive light and everything is wonderful in life’s garden. But if you overdose on the positive, you’ll soon be cast as one that doesn’t grasp reality. Being balanced is the right path for a truly positive life.

positive things and focus on your goals, you will achieve them. The reality is the law of attraction doesn’t magically happen, you have to work hard and optimism alone cannot attract your goals. Focus on what you want and let go of thoughts that pull you down.

So here are a few good reasons why you need to rein in your optimistic outlook: Yin/Yang: There’s a yin for every yang. Optimism is focusing on the good things that may happen and hope that they do come. But never expect things to always go in your favor. So be thankful for the good days and stay hopeful during the bad, knowing that things will get better.

Life is unforeseeable: Optimism helps improve your mood and attitude. It’s good to be optimistic but also be realistic and know that sometimes the answer is “no” and we do not always get what we want. We have to trust that whatever happens, happens.

Embrace changes: Overdoing optimism can work against you. Be ready to accept when things don’t go to plan. Reality is that change is inevitable and we should be ready to adapt. Law of attraction: Optimism is a requirement in the law of attraction: you attract what you think. So if you think about

Fantasy or Faith: Optimism can lead to either faith or fantasy. Some people are so optimistic their expectations are no longer real. Be mindful of what you expect and be logical to what wishes can be achieved Reality check: Optimistic people lead a positive and peaceful life. But they can be smart and make a balance with reality to avoid disappointment and frustration. Having a reality check will help create balance that you need for a stress-free life.

Expression of interest open for

ArtSHINE Showcase Now

The ArtSHINE Showcase provides short-term retail microdisplay spaces for Artists, Artisans, Designers, and Crafters. The ArtSHINE Showcase is ideal for artisans and makers: jewelry, cards, clothes, bags, and other small craft or fashion items. Trial your products without the major ongoing cost of renting expensive retail premises. We know creative Artists, Artisans, Designers, and Crafters are nervous and reticent about ‘selling’, hesitant ‘chasing’ customers, and constantly struggle to think up new and innovative ways to get products out there. Based on our experiences at ArtSHINE, the biggest challenge for a new player in the market is to find their ideal clients, and to find a place to sell and promote their products. Many Artists, Artisans, Designers, and Crafters find it extremely difficult to approach and convince retailers and wholesalers to carry their creations. The ArtSHINE Showcase solves these problems for you as we have already solved them for many other arts-based professionals. Working together with the ArtSHINE team means you can focus on your art and craft, while we work with you to take the hassle out of selling. Together we find and connect you with your ideal clients; be the consumer, retail or wholesale. Selecting an ArtSHINE Showcase package enables you to promote your products through the ArtSHINE Gallery and to ‘road test’

and trial products before sinking your hard-earned savings into taking your product to a more commercial level. “It’s like your own retail showroom without the high cost and burden of setting up a shop front” says ArtSHINE cofounder Vinh Van Lam. “With our passion for supporting independent artists, we can help you take care of the rest.” The ArtSHINE Showcase also enables you to meet face to face with your customers in a professional setting. Including preferred access and discount rates for meeting and event spaces at CoSydney CoWorking + Project Space where the ArtSHINE Gallery is housed, your customers, and potential customers, can visit your ‘showroom’ and discover you as the artist and designer behind the product. The ArtSHINE Showcase: ArtSHINE Showcase Membership: $150 (one time fee) l Listing on the ArtSHINE Showcase website. l Listing on the ArtSHINE Showcase Directory. l Regular VIP invitations to ArtSHINE Meetups and ArtSHINE Gallery events. l Quarterly ArtSHINE Showcase ‘Insights’ e-mail. l Trial membership of CoSydney CoWorking + Project Space.

Do you want something so badly that you obsess about it day and night, even if it means sacrificing other areas of your life? Describe yourself as passionate and determined?

Ask yourself why you want it so badly?

Do you want to do well in this area so badly that you wouldn’t let anything stop you?

What about it fulfills me?

This is a sign that you’ve tuned into your true purpose. Purposeful action doesn’t require external motivation because internal inspiration drives it. Maybe this part of your life is your career, and you get to earn a living to do something you feel so passionate about. Or maybe this is a hobby, like exercising. Maybe it’s work you do with a non-profit. Maybe it’s art, design or music, or poetry. Search for this passion in your life, then explore it.

When you find this burning desire, don’t write it off. There are many examples of people who have made their passions their careers and business. In fact, those are usually the most successful people. When you get your life “on purpose” and turn your passion into income, you’ve taken a great step towards living a truly fulfilling life.

Want to learn more? It’s as simple as 1... 2... 3... 1. Have a personal chat with Vinh from ArtSHINE 2. Tell us little bit more about yourself and we’ll offer you our insights in a short one on one coaching conversation. 3. Just starting out? Visit: www.artshine.com.au/newbusiness-survey Been working in your business for two years or more? Visit: www.artshine.com.au/ existing-business-survey We’re here to help you to take action just like we’ve helped thousands of other artists, designers and creative professionals all around the globe. Now is the time to let your art SHINE. Now is the time to Make Tomorrow Today! n
