Did you know? ArtOrg ran an ad in the worldwide-respected Art News magazine to announce the John Berkey show. Did you know? Artist Mel Racho’s multimedia show on Immigration premiered at ArtOrg in July and is traveling to Chicago, Ohio and New York City galleries from here. Did you know? ArtOrg has never been in the “Cheers” section of the Northﬁeld News. Did you know? The ArtOrg Governors Ball Print was given $2000 by the Sesquicentennial committee who in exchange received two of the prints--which were sold for a total of $4600--netting the committee a positive $2600. Did you know? ArtOrg’s large litho press is one of the largest and oldest presses still in existence, and had to be lowered down a condemned elevator shaft in Milwaukee on its way to the ArtOrg printmaking studio.

ArtOrg, an energized and inclusive arts-based organization focused on engaging the community in the visual arts through education, business partnerships, and exciting contemporary art venues.

Dear members,

ArtOrg was founded by a group of visual artists desiring to create more opportunities and greater visibility for the visual arts in Northfield. ArtOrg is energizing the visual arts by offering exciting classes to the public. We are creating growth opportunities for emerging artists seeking to promote their work in a supportive and inclusive organization. And finally, we are building a sense of community among visual artists in the region.

I came across an old story from Abraham Lincoln the other day. In that story, Lincoln recounted a certain steamboat that worked on the Mississippi river; the steamboat was designed with a 10 horsepower boiler and a 12 horsepower whistle. The steamboat would do a great job and get all of its work accomplished. But, whenever it would blow its whistle, it would stop dead in the water. In this community, I think sometimes it is just good to stop, take a step back, and ask what is good for our art community. I think it’s great when we buy a piece of local art; I think it’s great when we take a class that pays a wonderful instructor. I think it’s great to take some action. Let’s make Northﬁeld an “Arts Town” by taking action not blowing whistles. Do you agree?

Christopher Schommer 6 to 12th graders Thursday and Friday, October 19 and 20 1 to 5 pm Cost: $60 ArtOrg Printmaking Studio (under The Art Store) Work on exciting relief printing projects. Learn the ins and outs of carving the linoleum and wood blocks on the ﬁrst day, and print them on the second day. If time and interest permits, large blocks (4 foot x 8 foot) can be designed for steamroller prints! ArtOrg will be holding several exciting steamroller printing events during the year.

Come to Artorg on Saturday’s for two hours of art time. Each four-week session will have a theme which will explore different artists and different mediums. Blow off some Saturday steam and have a great art experience!

Printmaking Club for Middle Schoolers

Rana Raeuchle Six Mondays Sept. 18, 25, Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23 Session 1: 6 to 8 grades from 4 to 5:30 pm Session 2: 9 to 12 grades from 7 to 9 pm Cost: $67.50 session 1, $90 session 2 ArtOrg Gallery, 200 Division Street (riverside entrance) Are you a storyteller who loves working in visual media? Do you like reading manga and graphic novels, and have you always thought of making your own? “Comickers Unite!” is a 6-week program taught by Comic Artist and lecturer Rana Raeuchle, BFA Comic Art. She will start by teaching basic storytelling and comic technique through the medium of mini comics, and then go on to more advanced Storytelling techniques using springboards from classic literature, traditional storytelling, folk lore, and inspired by manga storytelling. There are classes available for two age groups: 6-8 grade level will focus on creating mini comics, short, onepage comic stories, jam comics, and eventually a 2-page mini story. All work will be collected into books and distributed among the classes, and available to the general public when we are all ﬁnished. This class will be heavy in character development and anecdotal stories that focus on the individual character. 9-12 grade level will focus on breaking down the comic page, analyzing stories and how they function, and build up to creating 8-12 pages of comic stories to be collected in an anthology. This class will focus more on the storytelling techniques, plot and character development, and introduction to professional Comic Artist materials. Both classes will have a reading list, and the students will be required to keep a sketchbook and bring it to every class for daily assignments, notes, and out of class work. Doodling while in class is encouraged!!

The ﬁrst four weeks will focus on relief printing such as woodblock to create bold and graphical imagery. The second four weeks will focus on intaglio printing where we will print off copper plates using a centuries-old technique. Beginning techniques and methods of using printing presses will be taught. Feel free to bring a snack, and cookies and juice will be provided.

Portfolio Building for High Schoolers Karen Oiseth High school students. Four Thursdays, Oct. 26, Nov. 3, 9, 16 6:30 to 8:30 pm Cost: $60 ArtOrg Gallery, 200 Division Street (riverside entrance) Here’s an opportunity for students who have taken some art instruction to get more quality art time. These four evening sessions will concentrate on the basic skills of drawing and painting with an art history component. Karen’s experience and expertise will help students expand and prepare their portfolios for viewing. We will also discuss applying to art school programs, and what is makes a good portfolio.

Intro to Printmaking

Christopher Schommer Adult and high school 10 Saturdays: Sept. 30, Oct. 7, 14, 21, 28, Nov. 4, 11, 18, Dec. 2, 9 1 to 3 pm Cost: $150 ArtOrg Printmaking Studio (under The Art Store) ArtOrg will be hosting a combined intaglio and lithography course to introduce and explore both of these powerful and historical techniques using any one of our many presses. The first five weeks will explore intaglio, the process in which you incise ink filled lines onto a smooth copper plate to get rich imagery. The second half of the course will look at lithography, a fascinating process where you will use grease, acid, and water as your tools. Learn how to print your litho images on large limestone blocks that are 4” think! Once you start exploring the printmaking process, the possibilities are endless.

Using Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain as a starting point, we will look at basic drawing as a skill that a person can acquire. We’ll be starting where you left off - if you haven’t done any drawing since you were in kindergarten, that’s just ﬁne - we’ll be starting there! If you have done some drawing but need a refresher course, this will be perfect. Contour line drawing with graphite will be our medium although in the third class period we will experiment with water-soluble drawing tools.

Landscapes: Beginning Watercolor Painting

Howard Olson Adult and high school 5 Thursdays: Sept. 21,28 and Oct. 5,12,19 7 to 9:30 pm Cost: $110 ArtOrg Gallery, 200 Division Street (riverside entrance) We will cover painting buildings, water, sky, trees, etc. We will also go over information on different types of materials used in painting a watercolor. The last week of class students may bring in their own subject matter to paint. High school students are welcome. This class is taught in conjunction with Howard’s gallery show held at ArtOrg.

Advanced Intaglio will build upon basic line etching principles by exploring technical processes used to create texture and shape. In this course, we will use the traditional method of aquatint, which creates areas of tone. We will then move into softground processes which will allow external texture, ranging from fabric to sandpaper, to inform our images. Also, sugarlift, relief roll, and other processes will be introduced as desired. We will work with multiple plates, introducing the effects of layering, color combinations, and plate registration. This course aims to reveal the depth of possibility that surrounds these centuries old processes and techniques!

Everyone will make a self-portrait from a photograph in this class that combines getting a likeness with a special painting technique. Bring your favorite art materials and a good, non-smiling photograph.

Focus on developing your drawing skills from one model in one pose for all three sessions. This course will help the artist allow their work to evolve over three classes to increase individual skills and complete a major work. If you choose, you will be able to work directly on a copper or litho plate. Artorg’s Open Printmaking Studio runs from 1-3 each Saturday so that once you complete your drawing you could stay and use the facilities to print. Bring paper and drawing supplies. There will also be a list of “suggested” supplies at The Art Store with an opportunity to purchase what you need at the beginning of each class.

We will cover pencil hardness, blending techniques, and (my favorite) erasers! Mary will share many tricks she uses in her artwork. You can signiﬁcantly improve your drawings if you have a good understanding of how to make your tools work for you.

The 48-Hour Film James Vculek Adults and teens Early January, 2007 On location somewhere in Northfield Cost: $160. Join established and award-winning director James Vculek as he shepherds the process from beginning to end of a 48-hour film. A script will be chosen and developed for the class members, and then each job in the production of a film will be given on a rotating basis to each of the students. Screening of the completed film will be Sunday evening. Final editing may be done in Minneapolis at a state-of-the-art video editing house. This class is limited to 10 students, so register early!

Horse Drawing on Site Liz See Adult and Teen Three Saturdays, Sept. 23, 30, Oct. 7 10 am to 12:30 pm ArtOrg Gallery, 200 Division Street (riverside entrance) Explore the art of drawing horses. We will meet at several local farms to observe horses in their natural environment, and explore the line and tonal qualities of these beautiful animals. Using the principles of basic ﬁgurative anatomy, we will work toward increasing our awareness of form through a natural approach to drawing horses. First session meets at Artorg for drawing technique and materials introduction. Materials: You will need a sketch book or paper, pencils, an eraser. A “suggested” materials list will be available at The Art Store.

You have a nagging little voice that says “I need to get a website up”. Well, ArtOrg and the Northﬁeld Enterprise Center are pleased to announce a class for both small business owners and artists alike to learn about and create your own website. The class combines instruction for students together in a classroom environment, instructions and a check list of items you must prepare, and then a limited amount of time one-on-one together with a consultant to “put your website up” on the internet. The combination of classroom instruction with the intent of preparing your content—and then the one-onone may be a good yet inexpensive way for you to actually “git-r-done”. Special attention will be given to the proper creation of your visual content for web display. Taught by Bob Courchaine and other web and design consultants in the Northﬁeld area. The class is limited to six students for this fall session.

Rick Swearer Adults Saturdays, September 2 and 9. 12 to 4 pm. Cost: $88. Artists Art Kenyon and Scott King maintain their printmaking and letterpress shops at the Anderson Center, and Rick is traveling there to give a “brush up” class on litho for the Center. An old historic litho press was obtained by the Center on a tip from ArtOrg, and the class will endeavor to recommission it in this class. If you want to have a fun weekend and brush up on stone lithography, this is the class for you!

Image transfer involves exposing a slide onto 699 Polaroid film and prematurely peeling apart the color negative and transferring the image onto a paper surface. The image will be enhanced with colored pencil on the second class session. The transfer process uses a Daylab, color or B+W slides, and 699 Polaroid film. Dig into your old slide collection -- which you might have thought were “useless.” Use them to create a new art form. Students are to bring in 10-15 slides. Colored pencils, art paper, and film will be provided.

Open Life Drawing Studio ArtOrg staff Every Wednesday night, from 7 to 9 pm. Cost: $10 member, $15 nonmember ArtOrg Gallery, 200 Division Street (riverside entrance) Drop in and draw from a live model. This is ArtOrg’s second year of this open studio, and remains one of our most special offerings. There are artists present that can help with materials, drawing tips and pointers. The class is largely undirected and really just there for people to work on their skills. “The human form is the basis of all art”--Duane da Vinci.

Join established Raku expert Tom Willis as he shows the entire process from clay to finished object. Raku is a method of firing pottery whereby the pottery is fired, and then placed with material like paper or sawdust. This material reacts with the glazes and creates very unique and unpredictable colors, lusters, and patterns. This class will be held both at the Faribault Art Center and Tom’s studio and space is limited to 8 students.

Join Rick Swearer in Red Wing’s Anderson Center glassblowing studio to learn the main skills in blowing glass. The Anderson Center has a nice studio with glass furnaces and other equipment. Gail Dahlberg is the resident who will be introducing us to the studio. Join us for this unique and special class. Register early to avoid disappointment. Thanks to the Anderson Center for this wonderful opportunity.

3rd Annual Japanese Animation Film Festival ArtOrg Japanese Animation Festival 7 pm Fridays Oct. 6,13,20,27 ArtOrg and the Carleton Cinema and Media Studies Department announce the 3rd annual Japanese Animation festival. This year the festival is being led by Rana Raeuchle in collaboration with MCAD’s Frenchy Lunning. Rana is a working comic artist who is also teacher ArtOrg’s “Comickers Unite” classes for middle and high schoolers. If you have not yet experienced the jaw-dropping animation, unrivaled character development, and complicated cultural aspects of Anime, you are in for a pleasant shock. Please go out of your way to visit our festival—you will love it.

In this course, we will use the traditional method of aquatint, which creates areas of tone. We will then move into softground processes which will allow external texture, ranging from fabric to sandpaper, to inform our images. Also, sugarlift, relief roll, and other processes will be introduced as desired. We will work with multiple plates, introducing the effects of layering, color combinations, and plate registration. This course aims to reveal the depth of possibility that surrounds these centuries old processes and techniques!

Artists Art Kenyon and Scott King maintain their printmaking and letterpress shops at the Anderson Center, and Rick is traveling there to give a “brush up” class on litho for the Center. An old historic litho press was obtained by the Center on a tip from ArtOrg, and the class will endeavor to recommission it in this class. Anderson Center Classes The minute that most printmakers are handed their diploma, they lose the ability to print, because they do not have access to equipment. ArtOrg’s printmaking studio solves that problem for printmakers and also wants to attract newcomers to the craft. ArtOrg has put together a great resource for both the professional artist and the beginner in its printmaking facility, right under The Art Store at 314 Division Street in downtown Northﬁeld. Letterpress, etching, woodblock and lithography can be accomplished here. The equipment listed here would amount to an over-$70,000 resource if acquired conventionally. The Anderson Center in Red Wing is a great facility which has great gallery and residency programs. Sunday, September 3 at 10pm “John Berkey Observed”, 1987, about 1 hour. A unique feature of the John Berkey exhibition at ArtOrg was Berkey’s experimental videos. Berkey took many of his fully-realized paintings and set them to music, weaving in and out of the images, panning and zooming across one image only to fade in to another. He created deeply distinctive descriptions of his various works in subject groupings such as American history, space travel and others. This video work had its world premier on Nov. 5, 2005 at Carleton College.

“Four Stones for Kanemitsu” 1974, 28 minutes, An Academy Award Nominee for Best Documentary (Short Subject), this classic film produced at Tamarind Lithography Workshop shows the collaboration between artist Matsumi Kanemitsu and Master Printer Serge Lozingot as they create a fourcolor lithograph. Beginning with the graining of the stones, the camera follows the process through the esthetic and technical challenges in drawing, printing, and proofing this complex image. Never before has the actual sense of making a color lithograph in a professional workshop been so vividly and effectively captured in this superb film.

ArtOrg Enters Brave New World by Dan Iverson 1/25/06 NORTHFIELD -- John Berkey has the ability to bring people to new places. Whether it’s to a distant galaxy, smalltown Middle America or a tranquil lake setting, Berkey’s sense of painterly realism awakens childlike imagination and sends the viewer on a journey of the mind. Now, Berkey’s work is leading to new endeavors in the real world. At age 73, Berkey, a lifelong artist and successful professional illustrator, recently closed the first exhibition of his career at Northfield’s ArtOrg Moving Walls Gallery, and the outcome of the event could have a lasting effect on Berkey and the Northfield Arts community. In little more than two months “John Berkey Observed” generated more than $100,000 in sales of some of Berkey’s original paintings, dwarfing the financial success of any of ArtOrg’s past exhibitions. The resounding support of the show came as a surprise to ArtOrg officials and Berkey himself. “I was really surprised and very happy,” Berkey said Thursday from his home in Excelsior. “Generally, I’ve always been told you’re either an artist or an illustrator. It was vindication that I could make more money as fine artist; I’d never been paid that much (at one time) as an illustrator.” The exhibition was a triumph for ArtOrg as well. The group stands to gain about 40 percent of the gallery sales, which will be used to help fund future ArtOrg non-profit programs. More importantly, however, is that the buzz surrounding the exhibition has given Northfield added credibility as an arts community. “It really has given Northfield a little bit of worldwide interest,” ArtOrg Executive Director Dave Machacek said, noting ArtOrg’s virtual exhibition of “John Berkey Observed” fielded a global audience, including art collectors in Singapore, Greece and Germany. In fact, ArtOrg’s eBay auction of an original 1977 conceptual art piece for the movie “Star Wars” had a French bidder in the lead before eventually being outbid by a former writer for “Saturday Night Live” and “Seinfeld.” The final bid for the 7-by-6-inch sketch was $5,638. “The success of the Berkey show puts (ArtOrg) on the map as a gallery and as an organization,” Machacek said. “I’ve always felt that having Northfield as a base that the sky’s the limit to what we can achieve with visual arts. This proves that. “If we work hard and make smart decisions we can continue to bring in ‘the next big thing.’” Susan Jacobsen, director of Public Programs at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, is one art enthusiast who has taken notice to the work being done to promote the arts in Northfield. “I’m very impressed with ArtOrg,”she said. “The exhibitions I’ve seen are very engaging, and merit the regional publicity they’ve been getting.” Though she’s only an hour to the north, Jacobsen admitted she hadn’t been to Northfield in about a decade prior to the formation of ArtOrg, but has made the trip twice during the past year. “People are really taking notice to the contributions ArtOrg’s making to the printmaking community,” she said. The future: Machacek said ArtOrg will continue to focus on fostering a passion for arts with area residents in the future. “Part of ArtOrg’s goal is to bring wonderful artists to Northfield so people can experience them,” he said. “On the other hand, we want to support local artists. In this instance we were able to do both.”

A Historic Process Fuels Future Programs by Dan Iverson 12/23/05 NORTHFIELD -- The timeless beauty of Kari Alberg’s Governors Ball lithograph may have a lasting effect on the community of Northfield. Daniel Wirtz’ final bid of $2,300 during the last few frenzied moments of a night-long silent auction at last Saturday’s Sesquicentennial Governors Ball, along with the print itself, have planted the seeds of programs which have the potential to be equally steeped in Northfield’s history when the city’s bicentennial approaches. ArtOrg was commissioned to produce the piece by the Sesquicentennial Executive Committee for $2,000, most of which offset the costs of creating the massive handmade series of prints. In return, ArtOrg supplied two of the prints designed by Alberg and painstakingly produced by a small team of local printmakers to the executive committee. A unique third copy, or Museum Print, also was delivered to the Northfield Historical Society to display to the public for years to come. Proceeds from the sale of No. 1 and those generated by the anticipated sale of the No. 2 print, will be used to jump start a Northfield volunteer coalition already in the works. Sanctioned by a philanthropic division of Northfield’s Carlson Capital Management, the new volunteer organization aims to facilitate and coordinate volunteerism and philanthropy in the community. “It really exceeded our expectations,” Governors Ball Co-Chairman Rob Schanilec said of the silent auction’s outcome. “I think it really was because of the quality of the piece.” Alberg said she was excited her work and the medium were supported by the bidders. “It was a dream of mine to work on something so big,” She said. “I’m thankful for the Sesquicentennial Committee, because it gave me the opportunity to work on this big press. ... Then to see how it was received was just wonderful.” ArtOrg, which holds the remaining prints of the official series of eight lithographs, also stands to reap some rewards for its efforts. ArtOrg Executive Director Dave Machacek said the organization plans to use the proceeds generated by the sale of Alberg’s prints to help fund the future of ArtOrg’s printmaking studio.

An Inside View on Immigration By Dan Iverson 7/12/06 Northfield--Anyone who has experienced a lawsuit knows the action, or lack thereof, wouldn’t bode well for a television series. The months of waiting, meetings with lawyers and seemingly endless amounts of paperwork don’t exactly make for riveting entertainment. Still, the incremental and often tedious proceedings can have a monumental impact on those involved. It should come as no surprise, then, that the same could be said for the convoluted litigation surrounding American immigrants attempting to gain their visa clearance or U.S. citizenship. Immigration is more moveable of a commodity for American mass media when sold as a controversial story worker’s rights, illegal border crossings and an encroachment of homeland safety. Consequently, stories of immigrants taking the appropriate actions to visit, work or study in America or gain their citizenship are often cast away in the public psyche. However, every story holds a massive amount of emotional weight. Indonesian immigrant Mel Racho shares her own story, embracing chapters of conflicting identity and a family tug-of-war in her installation, “Why are you here? (And where is your accent?)”: The moderate immigration story, which opens 6 pm Friday at ArtOrg’s Moving Walls gallery in downtown Northfield. The installation is an opportunity for Racho to share the quiet side of immigration that she’s come to know as an adult. “There’s a stark contrast between the sensational stories that make it into the media and what it’s really like,” Racho said, citing her own journey to attain student visa and the accounts of her two brothers who have gained US citizenship (another is currently sponsored).

Racho has been battling cross-cultural currents nearly her entire life. Born in the Philippines and raised in Indonesia Racho left her parents home at 17 to study in the United Sates, following in the footsteps of her older brothers. Completing her undergraduate studies at Grinnell College and pursuing her master of fine arts degree in interdisciplinary studies at Columbia College in Chicago, Racho’s education will soon position her at a crossroads. Will she call the United States home or return to Jakarta? Will she stay to be close to her brothers with blossoming families or leave to reunite with her parents? Racho explores this quandary with an unconventional video sculpture in the ArtOrg gallery. A process-oriented sculpture, Racho has previously worked with unforgivable materials such as wood and steel, but found “dabbling” in video quite satisfying as an undergraduate and continues to explore its parameters. “I’ve always had an interest in audio and video and the malleability of the media”, she said. The content is absolutely relevant, but also unique” said Lisa Otte, curator of the installation and close friend of Racho. “To tell this story through the lens of a family, an d to talk about a different and very specific form of immigration, is very refreshing.” Otte, who met Racho at Grinnell, brought the exhibit to Northfield through her connections at ArtOrg, where she is co-op member of the printmaking studio. “To bring this quality of art to Northfield and to show video is really exciting,” Otte said.

A True Renaissance Man 5/19/06 By Maggie Lee NORTHFIELD -- Although he has a couple of engineering degrees, Scott King is a poet. A poet who prints his works and the works of other poets either as a broadside, a pamphlet or a small book. The printing and the binding is all done by hand. This Scott King, along with his wife Lisa, is a Northfield resident. But he is not the Scott King who was once a member of the Northfield News staff. This Scott King was born at Bemidji and grew up in Pelican Rapids. He graduated from high school in the latter city. Two years at the University of Minnesota-Duluth followed. Then he attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis for eight years, obtaining the degrees in chemical engineering and environmental engineering. Before he launched his present lifestyle, King did make use of the engineering background as he set up a laboratory for the Minnesota Chippewa tribe on the Moose Lake reservation to test the amount of mercury in fish. “I’m happy I’ve found my place,” said King who, although he doesn’t look it, is 41 years old. He and his wife, Lisa, moved to Northfield in 1999. A native of Apple Valley, she teaches English in Lakeville. The urge to print his poems once he’s written them led to the collecting of foundry type from years ago, of equipment to create his own type, of proof presses to print the material. The binding is done by hand with needle and thread. Once he got into printing, he found old machines and old type in various places in Minnesota. At first he set up his equipment in the Kings’ apartment. Currently some of it is in their basement. But now the larger pieces are at Red Dragonfly Press and Type Foundry in the

Anderson Center for Interdisciplinary Arts at Red Wing. It is in the bottom ﬂoor of the remodeled granary at the Anderson Center. King said, “Beyond my own dreaming and labors, the press has taken shape thanks to the gifts and generosity of many people. First and foremost among these supporters is my wife who has gone so far as to encourage me in this rich, but exceedingly non-prosperous life.” King says he is about three years behind in his work, largely because of a labor of love. He takes care of the couple’s 2-1/2-year-old daughter Lida. She likes to be read too, but prefers that her father tell her an original story rather than reading one. King says that much of his own poetry is based on his love of nature. But perhaps Lida has something to do with it these days. A recently printed poem, “Eating Fish,” includes the lines: Tomorrow, the child will come curious to the table. she’ll ask how far to ocean shoals or icy river.” King has been exceedingly busy as a display of his work recently opened at the ArtOrg gallery, 200 Division Street. In preparation King had to hand bind a large number of books Japanese style, something that takes about a half an hour a piece. Depending on the style and types of paper, some of the books King prints can be done in two to ﬁve minutes. King uses all hand-made paper which can come from such far away places as India or Japan. Finding the right paper is sometimes a task, but information about papers is exchanged by poets and people involved in printing.

Howard Olson Howard graduated from Mankato State College with a degree in art and is a signature member of the Northern Plains Watercolor Society. He has been published in SPLASH, a book published by North Light Book Club. He has also been juried in Arts for the Parks, a national competition for the National Parks.

Christopher Schommer Minneapolis native Chris Schommer graduated from St. Olaf College in 2006, and is currently a part of the Art Apprenticeship Program at St. Olaf. He is also visual resources curator for the Art and Art History department. Chris has specialized in time based media, as well as all forms of printmaking and drawing.

Hortense McLeod Long-time Northﬁeld resident and Queen of the Cabaret, Hortense attended St. Olaf College and is currently attending The College of St. Catherine’s focusing on communication with a writing bent. Currently a multitasker, Hortense manages the Deli section at Just Foods Coop, produces and directs Cabarets for different organizations, and is appearing in the Twin Cities Fringe Festival premiering what she calls a “mythological story/folk opera.” She has taught many kids classes using video and incorporating performance art.

Connie Halpern Graduating from the University of Minnesota with a degree in art education, Connie has been teaching in some way ever since. Owning The Art Store in Northfield for twenty-five years, she was able to combine her business skills, her interest in art materials, and her love of teaching all in one nice space. Connie has exhibited her drawings and watercolors in Northfield and more currently exhibited a series of oil paintings at the Institute for Health and Healing up in Minneapolis. A firm believer that drawing is an essential core skill, ArtOrg will be continually offering this class. Connie is the Program Director at Artorg enjoying not only organizing each season’s classes, but taking them too.

Pam Teorey Pam Teorey is a local artist who has a Master of Arts in Studio Art and works mainly in painting and photography in her Northfield studio. With 27 years of teaching under her belt, she continues to teach painting, photography, and ceramics at Lakeville North High School. She has exhibited her work at the Northfield Arts Guild and area exhibitions. Pam lives in Northfield with her husband, Tom. She says, “I enjoy learning new techniques and making images and I love teaching art.”

Xavier Tavera

Scott King’s Red Dragonﬂy Press & Type Foundry publishes letterpress chapbooks, ﬁne press editions, and broadsides of modern poetry and poetry in translation. He also provides new metal printing type on a limited basis. Scott is a artist-in-residence at The Anderson Center in Red Wing, Minnesota where he maintains his working letterpress show and type foundry. He is also a degreed chemical engineer and a member of the ArtOrg Board of Directors.

Rana has BFA from Minneapolis College of Art and Design and maintains work at chibitoaster. com. She has taught for the public library system in the Twin Cities, MCAD, and the William Rainey Harper College of Palatine, Illinois. Rana is an experienced educator, designer and artist.

Xavier is also a leader of Grupo Soap del Corazon, and has been described as one of Minnesota’s best photographers. Xavier was on the cover of City pages in July of 2006, and will be helping with the cultural and educational programming with Northﬁeld’s Day of the Dead celebration. Xavier’s work has been featured in Weismann Art Museum, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Plains Art Museum and at the Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City

Jennifer Simpson-Dahl Jennifer graduated from the University of Minnesota in the early 90’s with a Bachelors of Arts in English Literature. She is an avid reader, writer and gardener. She has worked in child care and the restaurant business alternately for the past 20 years. She also managed the Art Store in Northﬁeld for two years. Jennifer has dabbled in many visual art forms and regularly paint on the windows with her children! She values the energy and creative spirit of children and loves to be part of developing and teaching programs at ArtOrg.

Karen Oiseth Karen graduated from St. Olaf College with a BA in Art Education. She continued her studies at St. Mary’s and also received a MA in Art Education. A super teacher, Karen taught for 26 years in the Burnsville School System, and 16 of those years were at the high school level. Currently Karen spends time in her Northﬁeld studio enjoying her true loves: painting and drawing. She said, “I see teaching as guiding. I now have the opportunity to develop my own skills as an artist.”

James Vculek James is an independent filmmaker who has won several film festival awards with his work “Two Harbors”. His new work “The Quietest Sound” is a 75 minute film with not cuts--much luck Hitchcock’s “Rope”. James is an engaging young filmmaker whose enthusiasm for the craft is second to none.

Rick Swearer Rick is an artist par excellence and is accomplished in media such as printmaking, glassblowing, rock carving and more. Rick was the President of the ArtOrg board of directors last year and his two brothers and mother are artists and/or arts administrators.

Mary Reid Kelley Mary Reid Kelley graduated from St. Olaf College in 2001, and was awarded an apprenticeship in the art department. She now lives and works in Northﬁeld, pursuing work in many mediums that explore issues of gender, class, and race. She is particularly inspired by Civil War artifacts and ofﬁce supplies. Mary is holding a gallery show at ArtOrg in November.

Tom Willis Tom is an experienced studio potter with emphasis on Raku and Raku ﬁrings. Please see examples of his Raku work on his website.

Whitney Hall

Lisa Otte

Whitney Hall recently graduated from St. Olaf College with a B.A. in studio art and women’s studies. Originally from Portland Oregon, Whitney has stayed in Minnesota, post graduation, for a love of the state. She returns to St. Olaf as a participant in the 2006-2007 Artist in Residence program. Past experiences in teaching art include art director at a summer camp and volunteering at a local Northﬁeld grade school teaching art to kindergartners.

Lisa Otte was born and raised in Northﬁeld. She left for 6 years, earned her B.A. in Art and French from Grinnell College in 2003, and spent the 2 following years in Portland, OR and Iowa City, IA. She has been back in Northﬁeld for the past year living, working, and creating. She specializes in intaglio (zinc and copper etching) and relief (linoleum and woodblock) printmaking and is especially interested in the effects of layering many plates. She also enjoys many things and many people, potlucks, and the art of the everyday. Lisa curated the very successful multimedia gallery from for Mel Racho this summer at ArtOrg.

Liz See Liz See is a board member of ArtOrg, and organizes our open drawing studio (thanks, Liz!). Liz is a graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago. Liz’s art experience includes living in England and working in a bronze foundry for two years.

Frenchy Lunning Frenchy Lunning is a Professor of Liberal Arts at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. She has been involved with the popular cultural discourse beginning with her dissertation on comic book superheroes. She is the founder and director of “Schoolgirls and Mobilesuits: Culture and Creation in Manga and Anime,” an annual workshop at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. She is managing editor of a new journal called: “Mechademia: A Journal on Anime, Manga and the Fan Arts” which was launched in spring of 2005. She has written articles on comics, anime, and action ﬁgures. She will be assisting with the Japanese Animation Festival in October.

Douglas Padilla Highlights of the continuing story of Douglas Padilla include founding of the Art-a-Whirl in NE Minneapolis, and the Grupo Soap del Corazon. Grupo Soap has had shows at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (Fontera Lake Street), and Day of the Dead celebrations on Lake Street. Douglas will be assisting with Northﬁeld’s Dia De Los Muertos events by mentoring several younger artists and curating the long steamroller print.

Gail Dahlberg Glassblower-in-residence at the Anderson Center in Red Wing, Gail Dahlberg holds an MFA from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. After teaching for several years in the Illinois public school system, where he developed a Young Artist Studio Glass Program, he returned to his native Minnesota and, in 2005, designed and built the Center’s glassblowing facility.

Bob Courchaine Bob’s views on web design can be summed up by his values as listed on his website: “Serve a few customers very well; think of the builder coming behind you; usability is the key; simplify, simplify; form follows function, software is a service, not a product.” Bob was a founder of many of the web sites we use every day here in Northﬁeld.

Northfield Attorney James has been active in fundraising projects at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Northfield, and is member of the Northfield Hospital Board. James is an avid fisherman.

Partner, HDMG Design Group, Minneapolis Greg worked for Public Television for 12 years before starting at HDMG where he became a partner four years ago. He has traveled extensively to Berlin, Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Paris, Amsterdam, Sydney, Melborne, and driven across most of the United States. Greg has been a construction worker, worked on oil wells, farmed, handled livestock including pigs, lambs, chickens and cows. He was also a disc jockey for 5 years.

Mark Fries, Secretary Vice President, Best Buy Corporation Mark has an MBA from U of Minnesota, and is on the board of the Illusion Theater in Minneapolis. He has held various accounting and strategic management positions during his career.

Robert Anderson Former Art Educator, Current Entrepreneur Simply stated, Bob taught art in the St. Louis Park school system for many years and many of his former students point him out as a big inﬂuence in their lives. Bob is also an artist in photography and an entrepreneur in many other business ventures.

Scott King Owner, The Red Dragonfly Press Scott King founded Red Dragonfly Press 10 years ago and has been a resident artist at the Anderson Center in Red Wing, Minnesota since 1999. Scott produces letterpress-printed editions of modern poetry. Scott’s books find homes in the permanent archive collections of many libraries, and he is sought after by authors and poets alike for his artistic gift with typography and bookmaking.

Kory Kohrs Consulting CPA Kory was Chief Financial Officer of Northfield Equipment and Manufacturing during its growth and subsequent sale to York International in 1996. He went on to build a successful consulting business and has worked with the Northfield Golf Club and the Laura Baker School. Kory has an MBA from St Thomas.

Sharon Lessard Senior Director, International Store Design and Development, Best Buy Corporation Sharon is currently responsible for the store design, development and execution of Best Buy’s International initiative and growth strategy. Sharon has an BA in painting and art history from the University of South Florida.

Catherine McBride Investment Centers of America Catherine was a founder of the local giving circle WINGS (Women in Northﬁeld Giving Support), and also runs the local branch of the Investment Centers of America, located in the First National Bank of Northﬁeld. Catherine has been an active volunteer to many other groups such as Girls Scouts and Maltby Nature Preserve.

Cora Scholz Former Executive Director, Northﬁeld Youth Choirs For over 18 years, the energy behind the Northﬁeld Youth Choir was Cora Scholz. She developed the NYC in to one of the preeminent groups of its kind in the nation through lots of hard work and high standards.

Adviso rs Tim Alberg

Tim teaches foundation classes and metalworking in the Art Department of University of Wisconsin Stout. He has degrees from St. Olaf College and his MFA from Syracuse University. Tim was recently named UW-Stout’s Education of the Year for 2004. Tim has both a razor sharp artistic sensibility and a true educator’s gift.

Susan Jacobson Susan is the Director of Public Programs at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Susan helps ArtOrg provide direction to our educational programs and general knowledge in the art world.

Staff

staff Dave Machacek, Executive Director Dave ran a small business in Northﬁeld that had about 50 employees. A highlight of his work there was the purchase, renovation, and subsequent move to a 50,000 square foot industrial building in Northﬁeld. Dave went to the U of M for many years in engineering and business.

Elizabeth See Designer, Marathon Multimedia Liz grew up in Northﬁeld and graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago. She later moved to England and managed a bronze foundry which produced works on a contract basis to artists.

Rick Swearer Working Artist Rick grew up in Northﬁeld when his father Howard Swearer was President of Carleton College. He has a BFA from Macalester College in Printmaking, and has also worked actively in glass blowing and ceramics.

Connie Halpern, Program Director Connie founded and ran The Art Store in Northﬁeld for many years and held her own set of wonderful art classes out of her store. Connie brings a wealth of experience to ArtOrg and is a key player in organizing and running our art class offerings!

Anne Vogelwede Former Carleton Associate Director of the Alumni Annual Fund Anne has been engaged in the arts for many years, and is a former board member of the Northﬁeld Arts Guild.
