WELCOME TO THE 2019–20 SEASON “People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.” —Martin Luther King Jr. As the political and cultural landscapes undergo tectonic upheavals, ArtPower is guided by the traditional motto of the United States: E pluribus unum, “Out of many, one.” In curating, we are particularly interested in creating a season in which UC San Diego students can see themselves and their experiences upon the stage, with inclusion of a diversity in ideas, styles, and cultures at the forefront. If one of the most powerful acts an individual can do is to listen and understand, the arts present an unparalleled opportunity for all of us to engage with cultures unlike our own. Our commitment to excellence and exploration is unwavering, and we invite you not only to experience your favorite art forms but also to get out of your comfort zone and encounter something unexpected. At heart, our globally engaged series brings artists into direct conversation with the UC San Diego community and introduces our passionate audiences to exceptional performances. This year our Global Music series focuses on artists modernizing Asian music, updating conventions with contemporary performance. Our Chamber Music series highlights tradition while also showcasing the less-familiar works of female composers in celebration of the centenary of the Nineteenth Amendment. Our Special Events bring us interesting conversations and readings from brilliant authors on a variety of topics . We are also very excited for our participatory concert at the US–Mexico border with Choir! Choir! Choir! which will highlight the uniqueness and beauty of our border region through song. I hope you’ll join us! Jordan Peimer Executive Director, ArtPower at UC San Diego
A NOTE FROM THE CHANCELLOR Look Deeper There’s more to UC San Diego than meets the eye. From the birth of our experimental campus, we committed to exploration and discovery outside the norm. We’ve always challenged our students, faculty, and staff to look deeper at the world around them. We’ve brought together explorers, changemakers, and brilliant artistic minds and encouraged collaboration to solve societal challenges and drive progress. ArtPower embodies this movement. Artistic thought, the creative process, collaborative exhibitions, and the act of witnessing the uninhibited expression of the human condition are all integral to this pursuit. Thank you for making this possible through your support of ArtPower and UC San Diego. Pradeep K. Khosla Chancellor, UC San Diego 3

DEIRDRE BAIR Thur. Feb. 20, 2020, 8 pm The Loft General Admission: $10 UCSD Student: $5 Bites & Beverages
National Book Award–winning biographer Deirdre Bair explores her 15 remarkable years in Paris with Samuel Beckett and Simone de Beauvoir, painting intimate new portraits of two literary giants and revealing secrets of the biographical art in her new book, Parisian Lives. In 1971 Bair was a journalist and recently minted PhD who managed to secure access to Nobel Prize–winning author Samuel Beckett. The next seven years of intimate conversations, intercontinental research, and peculiar cat-and-mouse games resulted in Samuel Beckett: A Biography and propelled Bair to her next subject: Simone de Beauvoir. The catch? De Beauvoir and Beckett despised each other. Her seven-year relationship with the domineering and difficult de Beauvoir required a radical change in approach, yielding another groundbreaking literary profile. At ArtPower, Bair will speak about Parisian Lives—including never-before-told anecdotes and details that were considered impossible to publish back in the 1990s and that give audiences a new window on the all-too-human side of these legendary thinkers.

Grammy–nominated and Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz awardwinning drummer, bandleader, and vocalist Jamison Ross delivers the messages of humanity through the medium of jazz. He began his study of jazz as a high school student and gained worldwide acclaim as a featured musician in the Tribeca Film Festival–winning documentary CHOPS. His 2015 debut release, Jamison, introduced the world to his concept of rhythm and melody and also garnered a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album. His sophomore release, All For One, takes listeners a level deeper into Jamison’s ethos. The album is a result of a personal revelation that “we all have the capacity to love with empathy in a deeper way.”

ROSIE KAY DANCE COMPANY 5 SOLDIERS: The Body is the Front Line
Wed. Mar. 4, 2020, 8 pm “Lust, shock and awe… 5 SOLDIERS is a disturbing, illuminating Thur. Mar. 5, 2020, 8 pm and necessary glimpse into a world we mostly prefer to ignore.” Fri. Mar. 6, 2020, 8 pm —The Guardian Sat. Mar. 7, 2020, 8 pm White Box at Liberty Station General Admission: $40 UCSD Student: $9 Post-performance ArtTalk

5 SOLDIERS is funded by Arts Council England and presented in association with The British Army.
In 2008, British choreographer Rosie Kay joined The 4th Battalion The Rifles, to watch and participate in full battle exercises, and visited the National Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre. The culmination from her experiences is the award-winning, five-star work 5 SOLDIERS. Inspired by input from serving and former soldiers, 5 SOLDIERS is a thrilling and humane portrait of army life and tells the stories of five men and women serving on the front line. Deeply realistic, stark and thrilling, 5 SOLDIERS offers no moral stance on war, but instead questions what it is that we ask of our soldiers. With Kay’s trademark intense physical and athletic dance theater, 5 SOLDIERS explores how the human body remains essential to war, even in the 21st century. Making its San Diego debut, 5 SOLDIERS has earned five-star reviews, a nomination for Best Modern Choreography in the National Dance Awards, and topped the UK’s Best Dance charts in The Observer, The Guardian, and The Independent. RED BARAAT Festival of Colors Thur. Mar. 12, 2020, 8 pm Price Center East Ballroom
“A new-breed marching band music that’s part Punjabi wedding, part New Orleans second line, and all New York.”—Boston Globe
General Admission: $20 UCSD Student: $9
Red Baraat Festival of Colors is an immersive celebration of the Hindu holiday of Holi through music, dance, and visuals. Red Baraat has taken the spirit of the festival to the next level: a yearround show of communal revelry that brings together what NPR has called “the best party band in years,” a montage of classic Bollywood visuals, and a fiery dancer. Traditionally, Holi is marked by public gatherings of families and strangers sharing songs, dance, and the exchange of “colors”— colorful dry powder or colored water playfully thrown among the crowds of revelers. It signifies the victory of good over evil, the arrival of spring, and for many, a festive day to meet others, play and laugh, forget and forgive, and repair ruptured relationships. Red Baraat Festival of Colors debuted in 2012 at a sold out Le Poisson Rouge in New York City, and it has since expanded to over a dozen cities in the United States. Returning to its roots of just brass and drums and complete in colorfully painted white jumpsuits plus a dancer, Festival of Colors is a full- blown immersive experience as the band, the visuals, the dancer are like a mélange of colors, each bold on its own but commingling to form a stunning panorama. SIERRA HULL Tues. Apr. 21, 2020, 8 pm The Loft
“I think she’s endless. I don’t see any boundaries. Talent like hers is so rare, and I don’t think it stops.”—Allison Kraus
Section A: $30 Section B: $23 General Admission: $18 UCSD Student: $9
An exceptionally gifted mandolin player as well as a rapidly emerging singer-songwriter, Sierra Hull has taken the bluegrass and country world by storm. Her positively stellar career started early—from a Grand Ole Opry debut at the age of 10, to a Rounder Records signing and debut album Secrets at the age of 13, to performing at the White House at age 20.
Bites & Beverages
Now a seasoned touring musician nearing her mid-20s, she has delivered her most inspired, accomplished, and mature recorded work to date—Weighted Mind. Produced by legendary bluegrass musician Bela Fleck, Weighted Mind is nothing like what you’ve heard before—it’s singular and emphatic, harmonious and dissonant. It is the realization of promise, and the affirmation of individuality. It is born of difficulty and indecision, yet it rings with ease, decisiveness, and beauty.

As a scion of an illustrious musical family, Cuban pianist Harold López-Nussa is one of the brightest lights on Havana’s thriving jazz scene. Son of drummer Ruy López-Nussa and nephew of pianist Ernan López-Nussa, López-Nussa was born into a musical household in Cuba and educated by his French grandparents. He took an early interest in classical piano before shifting his focus at age 20 to the fiery Cuban jazz of his homeland. López-Nussa gained international attention when he won top honors at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Piano Competition in 2005 (a triumph that earned him a featured festival spot the following year). With his last album, New Day, the rising star refines his style and adds color to his artistic palette, asserting himself as a stylish composer whose technical abilities are matched only by his powerful playing.
