WELCOME TO THE 2022–23 SEASON We are so excited to be bringing back a full series of performances, our first since the pandemic hit. This one has many firsts for us at ArtPower. It includes our first programs at the new Epstein Family Amphitheater, named after longtime ArtPower supporters Dan and Phyllis Epstein. These performances include the San Diego premieres of Argentinean rockers Fémina, the kick off to offerings during Latinx Heritage Month that will conclude with the world premiere of Las Cafeteras’ multimedia performance Hasta La Muerte, a celebration of Día de los Muertos. Later in the spring we will be back in the amphitheater with two San Diego premieres: Dream House Quartet with indie rocker Bryce Dessner and New Zealand’s Atamira Dance Company and their show Te Wheke. This is also the first season in which we are presenting not just one, but two Pulitzer Prize finalists—playwright/performer Kristina Wong who will be screening her work on Asian American mental health in Wong Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest and composer Leilehua Lanzilotti whose new work, an ArtPower co-commission, Ahupua’a, will be performed by Lanzilotti in its world premiere with the Argus String Quartet. ArtPower will also be, for the first time, focusing on the work of indigenous artists. In November, we will celebrate UC San Diego’s Native American Heritage Month with a performance by Charly Lowry, who is of Lumbee and Tuscarora descent. We will be presenting Māori artists Atamira Dance Company from New Zealand in April and Argus Quartet will perform an evening of new music by contemporary indigenous composers in March, including Leilehua, a Kanaka Maoli (native Hawaiian). ArtPower has always loved making connections between artists and our community. It’s fantastic to see the artists like Kristina and Leilehua, who we’ve been working with for several years, succeed with this national acknowledgement. We are looking forward to the connections with students and community groups on and off campus. Jordan Peimer Executive Director, ArtPower at UC San Diego 3

WONG FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST Mon, Oct. 3, 8 pm The Jeannie Auditorium General Admission: $10 UCSD Student: $5 Post-screening panel with Kristina Wong After touring Wong Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest across the country for five years in over 40 live engagements, Wong’s critically acclaimed one woman show is finally captured in her first ever concert film through the dynamic direction of Michael Closson. An unforgettable tour de force performance. Wong Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is Kristina Wong’s raucous and whip-smart take on the high rates of depression and suicide among Asian American women. She sets out to single-handedly save them all by the end of her 80-minute film! She fails fantastically, creating hysterical laughter and a sobering coda. It’s one hell of a roller coaster ride! But don’t worry… it’s all fiction.

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
Through partnerships with academic departments, faculty, and local organizations, we offer meaningful engagement programs that connect our artists to audiences of all ages in the most inspiring and transformative ways.
UC SAN DIEGO STUDENT PROGRAMS ON-CAMPUS JOB OPPORTUNITIES ArtPower works with a bright team of undergraduate student employees during the academic year, teaching them skills in arts marketing, outreach, programming, and production. These future professionals learn firsthand what it takes to execute a performing arts season. MASTER CLASSES ArtPower offers opportunities for those future artists among us to get personal instruction from some of the best in their field. Taught by guest musicians, dancers, and choreographers, master classes provide that spark of inspiration to continue on the path to artistic excellence. ArtPower is proud to collaborate with the UC San Diego Department of Theatre and Dance and Department of Music.
