Welcome to The 2016–17 ARTPOWER SEASON Whenever I unveil a new season I am always excited. Looking back at the end of the first season I curated for ArtPower, I feel grateful to all the patrons who went on the journey with us this year and I can’t wait for you to experience all of the incredible artists we have coming in our 13th season. I am particularly happy to introduce you to two new series in 2016–17: the American Routes Series focuses on the diverse musical traditions that built the foundation of American music; the Filmatic Series, an evolution of our annual festival, explores the ever-changing ways we enjoy media, highlighting artists who are merging live performance with cinema. Of course, all of our beloved established series are returning: our Chamber Music Series introduces you to young artists of note, while inviting back some ArtPower fan favorites. Our Innovation Series explores European artists who are making incredible music using Western classical instruments in the most unconventional ways. Our Global Music Series highlights the rich music of Latin America, which will be certain to get audience members out of their seats and dancing. The Jazz Series returns to focus on the leading young innovators making waves on the scene. The Foovies Series of “dinner and a movie” showcases films celebrating the poetic, profound, and magical realism of childhood —all visually enhanced by new state-of-the-art screening technology in The Loft. Finally, our Dance Series focuses on leading choreographic voices from three major international dance communities. I am thrilled with how much crossover there is within the season. I anticipate many performances will encourage audience members to step outside their genre “comfort zone” and try something new. Colleen, Belem, the Dublin Guitar Quartet, and Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company will spark the interest of classical music lovers. Jazz fans will be delighted by the stylings of Thalma & Laércio de Freitas, ¡Cubanismo!, and Lea DeLaria. American Routes and Jazz fans will both be enthralled by Filmatic Series’ Lula Del Ray and Sam and Brent Green, whose storytelling captures American musical histories. Our season is only truly complete when we are able to enjoy it with our audience; we hope you will be adventurous and come experience something different. See you in the theater, Jordan Peimer Executive Director, ArtPower at UC San Diego This season we are rolling out dynamic pricing, which rewards you with lower ticket fees for booking earlier!

BITES & BEVERAGES

It’s been an astonishing couple of years for the Manchester-based trio GoGo Penguin—from being shortlisted for the Mercury Prize to touring the world at venues such as Coachella, the Barbican in London, and Überjazz Festival in Hamburg to signing a multi-album deal with Blue Note Records. Predominantly an acoustic piano trio, GoGo Penguin’s music draws from many areas of contemporary electronic music, incorporating arcade game bleeps, glitchy breakbeats, hypnotic Aphex-style melodies, grinding bass lines, and a rumbling low-end. It’s where hard-hitting jazz meets electronica.

Rising Sun is the perfect title for the Blue Note debut from trumpeter/composer Takuya Kuroda, who is perhaps best known for his inspired presence in vocalist José James’s band over the past several years. Making his first trip to the U.S. just 13 years ago to pursue his dream of becoming a jazz musician, Kuroda is a forwardthinking artist with a bent towards mixing postpop and adventurous soul-jazz. With his inventive compositions, which include everything from jazz, funk, hip-hop, and Afro-beat, he is primed to become a major voice on the 21st-century modern soul-jazz scene.

Founded in 2009, Tribu Baharú is an AfroChampeta music crew from Colombia’s Caribbean coast who are influenced by the “picó” (pick-up or sound system) culture present in many Caribbean countries. Champeta (originally a term that refers to a fisherman’s knife) is an infectious dance music influenced by Colombian folk music, Congolese soukous, Haitian kompa, zouk, calypso, mbaqanga, soca, rap, and reggae. The band’s mission is to convey the joy of being Afro-Colombian through exuberant dance, using music as their vehicle, and change negative perceptions of Champeta culture by sharing positive messages through music.

BELEM

For decades Didier Laloy and Kathy Adam have been thinking about experimenting with the boundaries of chamber music but it took 23 years before they formed Belem—an atypical duo featuring diatonic accordion and cello. Belem offers a suite of compositions at the crossroads of both performers’ diverse experiences: strong but simple, subtle and surprising—where silence, dynamics, and the most elegant and crazy rhythms are free to intersect.

The World Made Itself is a visual and musical journey through the history of the universe, from its beginning to the ever complex world of humans. Filled with a child’s sense of scientific wonder and rich in surrealism, this engrossing live performance combines animation and movement theater. In Myth and Infrastructure the artist’s shadow is constantly present as the world around her shifts and transforms, integrating her body into her own fantastical imagination, in which she traverses oceans, cityscapes, and domestic spaces to conjure dreamlike scenes. The performance features original music by Flying Lotus, Careful, Anna Oxygen, Caroline, and Mileece.

Over the course of five albums, French artist Colleen’s (aka Cécile Schott) musical repertoire has featured baroque instruments like the viola de gamba as well as modified music boxes and wind chimes, as she has pushed the boundaries of their playability. Play and Play: An Evening of Movement and Music Thur. May 25, 2017 8:00 pm Mandeville Auditorium Section A: $43 | Section B: $35 | Section C: $25 UCSD Student: $9 POST-PERFORMANCE ARTTALK

The Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company was born out of an 11-year collaboration between Bill T. Jones and Arnie Zane, who passed away in 1988. During this time, the two dancers redefined the duet form and foreshadowed issues of identity, form, and social commentary that would change the face of American dance. The Company has performed worldwide in over 200 cities in 40 countries on every major continent, and is recognized as one of the most innovative and powerful forces in the dance-theater world. The Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company returns to UC San Diego with Play and Play: An Evening of Movement and Dance, which includes two works—D-Man in the Waters and Story/. Both are accompanied by live music.

CHICANO BATMAN Thur. Sept 22, 2016 7:00 pm Free UC San Diego student–only event as part of UC San Diego Welcome Week

Chicano Batman is your sonic outlet from monotony back into the soul. Ethnomusicologists in their own right, Chicano Batman are students of rhythm, globe trotting on a quest to reclaim and represent the musical roots of past generations. Following a run of dates opening for Jack White on his Lazaretto tour, the band blew away fans at last year’s Coachella before hitting the road with Alabama Shakes. Along the way, the quartet’s Latin-psych-slow-jam soul with a pinch of surfrock cumbia has been praised by everyone from Rolling Stone, Los Angeles Times, Entertainment Weekly, and Paste to the New York Times, Under the Radar, and Noisey. Chicano Batman recently released Black Lipstick, an organ-soaked track featuring backup vocals by Saudia Yasmein.
