ABOUT MAN FOR A DAY “Katarina Peters embroiders a convincing joke on the gender gap in society.”—Berlinale Talent Press For the past thirty years, the main focus of gender activist Diane Torr’s performance work has been an exploration of the theoretical, artistic as well as the practical aspects of gender identity. Katarina Peters’ documentary Man for a Day documents a workshop Torr leads in Berlin in which a group of women come together to discover the secrets of masculinity. What makes a man a man and a woman a woman? Precisely when and where is gender identity formatted? How much is nature and how much nurture? Is it possible to transgress both masculine and feminine characteristics? Torr’s workshop is a fascinating and provocative laboratory experiment in social behavior. [Katarina Peters, 2012, Germany, 59 min]

ABOUT KATARINA PETERS Katarina Peters is a director and writer, known for Zwischen Lust und Last - Fünf Frauen und ihre Filme (1999), Am seidenen Faden (2005), and Man for a Day (2012).

ABOUT DIANE TORR For over 30 years, Diane Torr developed her artistic career as an integral part of Manhattan’s lively downtown art scene. During that time, she had created over 35 original performance works, videos, and installations. Her performances have been seen internationally at venues and festivals. She was a fellow of the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program and in 2003, earned a masters degree in fine arts from Bard College. Torr is best-known internationally as one of the pioneers of “drag king” or “female-to-male drag” performance and for over 20 years, she has taught her renowned Man for a Day workshop across the globe. She has written a book about her work, coauthored by Stephen Bottoms, Sex, Drag and Male Roles: Investigating Gender as Performance, published by University of Michigan Press in October 2010.
