ENHANCE YOUR ARTPOWER EXPERIENCES AFTER PARTIES After select performances, celebrate with ArtPower artists at The Loft. Beverages will be available to purchase from Zanzibar.
ARTTALKS ArtTalks are moderated chats with an artist that offer the opportunity to learn the unexpected stories behind a work’s creation.
BITES & BEVERAGES Our partner restaurant, Zanzibar at The Loft, is a creative American bistro serving lunch and dinner, as well as adventurous wine and beer options to keep you comfortably satiated.
Welcome to The 2017–18 ARTPOWER SEASON Many of us are concerned with the contentious and constant changes that have marked the last few months. Artists are often among the most vulnerable members of our society, partly because of the economics of art making and partly because the arts are about ideas. The unrestricted flow of ideas across barriers and borders is an essential element of a free society. One of the things that makes ArtPower such a unique organization is our commitment to presenting not just the art, but the artists themselves. Audiences—particularly student audiences—are able to interact with the artists directly and contribute to this timely exchange of ideas. This season, as the talk of travel bans loomed large, we decided to focus our global music series on voices from the ‘Arab world’. If a generation grows up and leaves the university without the opportunity to communicate with people from countries other than their own, there is the potential for another generation to walk through the world living in fear. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.” What better role can the arts play than to help break this cycle? Beyond music we are also presenting dance from Algerian street culture among the other artists who represent cultures often hidden or forgotten. As always, the rest of our artists represent the broad diversity of the university itself, perhaps nowhere so strongly as in our American Routes series, which looks at the breadth of American life through the music of the distinct cultures that help make America the beautiful country that it is. I look forward to sharing with you another exciting season of new voices and ideas! See you in the theater. Jordan Peimer Executive Director, ArtPower at UC San Diego

las cafeteras
Thurs. Sept 28, 2017 7 pm Sun God Lawn Free UC San Diego student–only event as part of UC San Diego Welcome Week Hailing from Los Angeles, Las Cafeteras are children of immigrants who remix roots music in order to tell modern-day stories with what Los Angeles Times has called a “uniquely Angeleno mishmash of punk, hip-hop, beat music, cumbia and rock.” Their sound is brought to life by an eclectic instrumentation, which includes jaranas, requinto guitars, a quijada (donkey jawbone), a West African bass instrument called the marimbol, a cajón, and a tarima (wooden platform) used to dance Zapateado. Las Cafeteras use music as a vehicle to build bridges among different cultures and communities, creating “a world where many worlds fit.” Las Cafeteras have taken the music scene by storm with their infectious live performances, playing with bands from diverse genres such as Mexican icons Caifanes and Lila Downs, Colombian superstar Juanes, Los Angeles legends Ozomatli, folk/indie favorites Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and most recently with hip-hop artist Talib Kweli. Oct 21 & 22, 2017 2 & 5 pm La Jolla Project by Richard Fleischner, Stuart Collection General Admission: $35 | UCSD Student: $9 Post-Performance ArtTalk (evening performances only) Part of La Jolla Playhouse’s WoW festival In planning since before Trisha Brown’s death earlier this year, ArtPower is proud to present a unique iteration of In Plain Site, a site-specific work created for the UC San Diego campus by Trisha Brown Dance Company (TBDC). The company will adapt Brown’s signature works around the campus, honoring her commitment to the presentation of performances in nontraditional venues, a format she helped pioneer. Brown was an iconic American choreographer and cofounder of postmodern dance. She formed TBDC in 1970, and the company has toured her work throughout the world. She was a recipient of awards from the MacArthur Foundation, U.S. Artists, the Dorothy & Lillian Gish Prize, and the National Medal of the Arts, among many others. Brown engaged collaborators who are themselves leaders in music, theater, and the visual arts, including visual artists Robert Rauschenberg, Donald Judd, and Elizabeth Murray, and musicians Laurie Anderson, John Cage, and Alvin Curran, just to name a few. With these partners, she created exceptionally varied works that have been staples in the dance world for decades. “[A] pillar of American postmodern dance.”—New York Times SPONSOR | Elaine Galinson and Herb Solomon Fund of the Jewish Community Foundation STUDENT ENGAGEMENT SPONSOR | The Weil Family Foundation

la santa cecilia mexrrissey mariachi flor de toloache Thurs. Nov 02, 2017 8 pm Balboa Theatre Section A: $35 | Section B: $30 | Section C: $25 | UCSD Student: $15 Celebrate Día de los Muertos with three exciting Chicano and Mexican bands! Grammy-winning Mexican American roots band La Santa Cecilia has become the voice of a new bicultural generation in the United States, fully immersed in modern music but still close to their Latin American influences and Mexican heritage. From Mexico, Mexrrissey pay tribute to Morrissey’s enduring legacy in that country. The Smiths’ frontman has long been a favorite with Mexican audiences, raised on rancheras, mariachis, and singers who were not afraid to cross the line. Now the love has been returned, with Mexrrissey’s south-of-the-border reinventions of Morrissey and The Smiths songs. Latin Grammy nominees Mariachi Flor de Toloache make New York City history as its first and only allfemale mariachi group. While working to preserve centuries-old traditions of mariachi, the group’s mélange of the traditional and the modern pushes the boundaries of the genre and brings mariachi music to new audiences. Feufollet is Americana at its finest—reverential but wholly nonconformist. The young and vibrant southwest Louisiana band takes Cajun, honky-tonk, and string-band music as starting points, keeping an open mind about where their songcraft will lead them next. On their most recent album, Two Universes, Feufollet prove their Cajun roots don’t define them as much as propel them forward. Whispers of the swamp and its time-honored waltzes underpin a modern sound influenced by blues, old-time country ballads, and rock ‘n’ roll. The band accomplishes the unusual feat of creating a sound that is at once familiar and fresh, classic and yet unmistakably original.

Residence leave a lasting impact on students of all majors. We are thrilled to connect students to Ranky Tanky, Yemen Blues, and Aeolus Quartet—among other creative innovators—in the 2017–18 season.
UC San Diego Student Tickets
We recognize students’ budgets can be tight, so we make sure our performances are not only fantastic, but also very affordable. Tickets are just $9 for UC San Diego students—and it’s even further discounted during Week One of every quarter, at just $5*! It’s just another benefit of being part of this great university. *Does not apply to Special Events. K–12 STUDENT PROGRAMS Student Matinees
It’s never too early to start loving art! We make it easy and accessible for K–12 students to visit UC San Diego and experience ArtPower Student Matinees. These fantastic live performances expose students to new cultures, and introduce them to the excitement of life on a university campus. This season Ranky Tanky, Yemen Blues, and Roland Auzet will dazzle young audiences. To learn how you can participate or to find out about the scholarships we offer Title 1 schools, contact Molly Clark at moclark@ucsd.edu or 858.534.0499.
ArtPower in the Classroom
Imagine experiencing a beautiful performance by a world-class string quartet upon returning from recess. That’s exactly the kind of scene you can expect when our artists visit classrooms at K–12 institutions. Students learn about the history and theory of music right from the comfort of their own desks.
transcenDANCE
transcenDANCE—located in National City—ignites the power of creativity in youth, inspiring them to overcome obstacles and providing them with the skills needed to become compassionate catalysts for positive change in themselves, their communities, and the world. We’re committed to connecting transcenDANCE students with ArtPower artists through workshops and discussions, enriching the program’s mission by allowing the students to share their enthusiasm and talent with our artists. THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO BECOME AN ARTPOWER DONOR . . . CREATE A LEGACY Consider Planned Giving—Join the York Society
Planned or estate gifts carry your philanthropic impact forward to help shape the future of ArtPower. Donors who make provisions for ArtPower in their estate become members of the York Society, an esteemed group of UC San Diego philanthropists whose giving ensures the long-term greatness of the university. With the help of the UC San Diego Gift Planning Office, we can guide you through the process and make your vision for your legacy a reality.
Make an Endowment Gift
As ArtPower’s endowment funds build, they enable long-term planning and financial stability. Establish your own endowment or contribute to an existing fund:
40
The Hamburger Chamber Music Endowment Fund, founded by Robert and Sonia Hamburger in 1996, provides crucial stability for ArtPower’s Chamber Music series. The Joan Jordan Bernstein Student Engagement Endowment Fund, established by Joan J. Bernstein in 2017 and with gifts from the ArtPower community of donors, provides critical annual support for ArtPower’s student engagement activities.
Leveraging your contribution through Employer Matching Benefits Many companies offer matching gift programs that make their employees’ charitable gift contributions go further. We are grateful to our corporate partners who provide this important resource. Visit matchinggifts.com/ucsd to see if your employer participates.
Making Gifts of Securities, Stock, and IRAs
Donating stock can be highly beneficial to you as well as to the university. When you donate appreciated securities, you avoid paying capital gains tax, and claim a charitable deduction for the full, appreciated value of the securities. You may also want to consider donating retirement plan assets to ArtPower. When you designate ArtPower as the beneficiary of your retirement plan, your gift passes through tax free.
ARTPOWER POWERPLAYERS With a shared passion for chamber music that grew to include world genres, a group of volunteers formed PowerPlayers to provide financial support for ArtPower’s curation, artistic direction, and engagement funds. PowerPlayers are philanthropists, but they’re also ambassadors who raise community awareness for ArtPower and its work both on and off campus, and advocate for arts and arts education.
PowerPlayer donors pledge $1,000 per year for three consecutive years, and enjoy insider access to special events, backstage meetings with artists, and intimate social hours spent discussing music. PowerPlayers host international artists in their homes, attend art conferences and festivals, and much more. Interested? Contact Carolena for more information: carolena@ucsd.edu.
POWERPLAYERS NEXTGEN Based on the richly diverse interests of donors, we’re bringing together a new group of philanthropic leaders—our next generation of ArtPower PowerPlayers! Join us! Contact Carolena for more information: carolena@ucsd.edu.
