glazbena škola gdje prosječno dvdesetak mladih glazbenika stječe svoja prva glazbena iskustva koja uspješno primjenju u puhačkom orkestru. Puhački orkestar Glazbenog društva „Spinčići“ uspješno surađuje s poznatim hrvatskim umjetnicima Sandrom Bagarić, Zoricom Konđa, Vinom Cocoe, Let 3 i Majom Blagdan. The Spinčići Music Society comes from the Town of Kastav and was established in 1921. The orchestra is composed of approximately 50 musicians, and puts on an average of 50 performances each year. The Spinčići Music Society wind orchestra performs throughout Croatia, and quite often internationally at festivals and meetings in Italy, Slovenia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, the Netherlands, Austria and Germany. Since 1996, the orchestra has organized the International Wind Orchestra Festival in Kastav on the Town of Kastav Day celebrated on 6 June. This year, the 13th annual International Wind Orchestra Festival “Kastav 2009” will be held. In previous festivals, 32 orchestras participated from Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Croatia. In 2005, the wind orchestra released its first CD titled Spinčićeva muzika (Spinčići's music). The Society also runs a music school where, on average, twenty young musicians gain their first musical experiences in a wind orchestra. The wind orchestra of the Spinčići Music Society successfully cooperates with well-known Croatian artists, including Sandra Bagarić, Zorica Konđa, Vinko Coce, Let 3 and Maja Blagdan. During 2009, the wind orchestra will participate in festivals in Austria, Slovenia and Croatia. They traditionally participate in the Kastav Cultural Summer Festival. The Town of Kastav and the orchestra will also play host to the 34th Meeting of Istrian Wind Orchestras on 23 May 2009.

Kastav bilježi, pored brojnih nastupa u zemlji, gostovanja u Austriji, Brazilu, Grčkoj, Italiji, Mađarskoj, Nizozemskoj, Njemačkoj, SAD, Sloveniji i Španjolskoj. The Klapa Kastav women's vocal group has been active since it was founded in the spring of 1994. From its beginnings, this klapa (vocal band) has been oriented towards preserving folklore heritage, especially musical heritage, and nurturing the folk melodies of its region, Croatia's northern coastal region and Istria, and those from the region of Dalmatia. The work of the Klapa Kastav women's vocal group is very intensive and has been plentifully rewarded with awards and commendations. Prominent among these are the 3rd prize of the expert panel of judges at Croatia's premiere klapa festival, the Omiš Dalmatian Klapa Festival, received in 2002 and in 2003. With these triumphs the Klapa Kastav women's vocal group has been recognised among the best women's klapa in the homeland. Also noteworthy is the 1st place prize at the Senj 2002 28th Festival of Northern Adriatic Klapa, and the 1st place won at the Buzet 2003 6th Festival of Istrian Klapa. This klapa has also seen significant triumphs at international competitions and festivals. In 2003, at the 6th international festival Europe and its Songs of choral a cappella singing, the klapa won the gold medal and a convincing 1st place in the Vocal Ensemble category. In 2004, the Klapa Kastav women's vocal group won two silver Olympic medals at the 3rd Choral Olympic Games held in Bremen, Germany, while in 2005 it participated in the 7th International Choral Festival on the Greek island of Rhodes, where it won 2nd prize in the Women's Vocal Ensemble category. In 2006, this klapa won the Jury Prize at the Vivace 2006 7th International Choral Festival held in the Hungarian city of Veszprém, and won the Golden Plaque in the Folklore category, at the Tonen 2000 4th International Festival and Choir Competition in Den Haag, the Netherlands. A very successful series of international triumphs continued in 2007 at the 11th International Choral Festival and Competition in Budapest, where Klapa Kastav won 1st prize and the Jury Golden Plaque, while last year, it won 2 silver Olympic medals at the 5th Choral Olympic Games held in Graz, Austria. Along with numerous appearances in the country, the Klapa Kastav women's vocal group has also toured in Austria, Brazil, Greece, Italy, Hungary, the Netherlands, Germany, the USA, Slovenia and Spain. In its work this 13

klapa dedicates great effort to preserving the folk heritage of its native region. The fruit of these efforts is the group's first album Ca je more… (What is the Sea…), released in June 2003 as an effort to preserve the musical heritage of Istria and the Primorje coastal region. The live CD and DVD Iskre vremena (Sparks of Time) was released in 2005 featuring a joint humanitarian concert held by the women's and men's Klapa Kastav at the Ivan pl. Zajc Croatian National Theatre house in Rijeka in late 2004. Saša Matovina has been the Artistic Director of the women's Klapa Kastav since 1994. The current line-up of the Klapa Kastav women's vocal group wishes to recall its greatest moments in its musical career, and in doing so to offer its native city another top notch musical event. It will do so at a gala concert marking the klapa's 15th successful anniversary at the opening of this year's 18th Kastav Cultural Summer (Kastafsko kulturno leto) at the picturesque Kastav Crekvine venue on Wednesday, 1 July. The concert will feature top performers providing the klapa with instrumental accompaniment for a part of the repertoire, with concert guest performers, the men's Klapa Kastav, and a surprise guest performer to be announced.

INTI RAIMI: Marina Gessner (violina) Maja Mironović (glas) Hrvoje Petek (žičani instrumenti) Siniša Prugovečki (žičani instrumenti) Inti Raimi is a Zagreb-based ensemble that bases its music on the extinct 19th century music of Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia. This music emerged from a mélange of South American, European and African culture during the colonisation of 15

South America, and is quite different than the instant music provided by the street performers usually first associated with these countries. After 10 years of "musical archaeology", Inti Raimi recorded what is for the moment its only CD (entitled Inti Raimi), which in fact received its best reviews from fellow musicians in Peru and Ecuador. It has collaborated in the past with UNESCO, the Olympic Games, and in Croatia has appeared on all major TV and radio stations. The ensemble is supported by the Peruvian consulate in Zagreb. In spite of its often dark themes and lyrics, the ensemble's concerts are noted for their spontaneity and lively, almost humorous, atmosphere, which allows audiences a close encounter with the music and instruments played 100, 200 and in some cases 1,000 years ago. The audience also has an opportunity to hear many unusual and unexpected bits of trivia, such as why all of the sculptures from one of the early South American cultures have runny noses. It should be said that, in fact, in the present day, Inti Raimi is one of the last few ensembles in the world endeavouring to maintain a serious connection to the vanished traditional music of Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia. But it is also quite unique in one thing, and that is the introduction of "alternative history" in music, trying to answer the question of what kind of music would have emerged had the first contact with the Incas been made by Croatians instead of by the Spanish. And since all of the members of the group have been involved in Croatian traditional music (which is not unusual given where they come from), they have produced music very interesting to audiences. INTI RAIMI: Marina Gessner (violin) Maja Mironović (vocals) Hrvoje Petek (string instruments) Siniša Prugovečki (string instruments)

NINA BADRIĆ Nina Badrić was born on 5 July 1972 in Zagreb. She started singing at the age of nine with the Zvjezdice children's choir, where she began learning various singing techniques. Nina's successful singing career archived its first peak with the album Personality (1997). Apart from being a bestseller, this album brought her two Porin Awards (Croatian National Music Award). She also achieved international success with the cover of I'm So Excited, topping the charts in Italy. Her last studio album Ljubav (Love) was released in 2003. Its first single, Čarobno jutro (Magical Morning), took 2nd place at the Croatian Dora Song contest for Eurovision, after which she decided never again to attend similar contests. The album Ljubav was a huge success. Each single topped the charts while the album turned GOLD sales. Nina wrote the majority of the lyrics and music. The album Ljubav won five PORIN awards in all major categories: Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Pop Album of the Year, Best Female Vocal Performance & Best Production. She held a big charity concert entitled Ljubav za ljubav (Love for love) on Valentine's Day 2004, as part of the UNICEF campaign “Every child needs a home”. Later that year, the Ljubav za ljubav concert was released as a live double CD and DVD. Her distinguished voice and love for music have brought her acclaim from both critics and audience, making her the undisputed Diva of this region. In November 2007, she released her long awaited studio album 07, which was immediately positively received by both the audience and music critics. More info: www.ninabadric.com

Komad istražuje zapletenost muško – ženskih odnosa kroz preuveličani i do apsurda iskarikirani pravi ljubavni rat, a zatim i neočekivanu romancu. U „Ukroćenoj goropadnici” vidimo pravog Shakespearea, velikog i neusporedivog poznavatelja ljudske duše. ...“ Kim Cuculić, Novi list“ WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE: „TAMING OF THE SHREW“, A COMEDY Directed by: Vito Taufer Starring: Tanja Smoje, Alen Liverić, Predrag Sikimić, Anastazija Balaž Lečić, Damir Orlić, Jasmin Mekić, Zdenko Botić, Denis Brižić, Alex Ðaković, Žarko Radić, Davor Jureško, Adnan Palangić, Nenad Vukelić, Dražen Mikulić, Leonora Surian, Roberto Pereira Barbosa Junior The Taming of the Shrew is a fast-paced comedy, full of liveliness, noise and temperament, wonderfully developed characters and with a great spirit of improvisation, and finally, the situation of a theatre within a theatre which puts everything into perspective. The ever intriguing theme of the battle of the sexes is present here, which certainly further contributes to the great popularity of this comedy. We follow the parallel tales of the marriage of two sisters: the gentle though slightly calculating Bianca, whose main condition for marriage is that her “wild” sister, the shrew Catharine, be married first. The play investigates the complexity of male/female relationships through an exaggerated to absurdly caricatured war of love, followed by an unexpected romance. In the Taming of the Shrew, we experience the true Shakespeare, and his great and incomparable window to the human soul. The play Taming of the Shrew was winner of the Special Prize for most original interpretation of the great classics at the 16th International Vršac Autumn Theatre Festival in Vršac, Serbia. For his portrayal of Petruccio, Alen Liverić was awarded the Raniero Brumini award for best male role by the Ivan pl. Zajc Croatian National Theatre in the 2007/8 season. 20

“The Rijeka theatre house interpretation of Taming of the Shrew has interesting ties to the present day, is skilfully put together and played, with a particularly charming performance by Tanja Smoje as the untameable Catharine. Funny, smart and fun.” Iva Gruić, Jutarnji list “Taufer's Taming of the Shrew has stayed true to Shakespeare's formula, which is this case is certainly not a setback. Its best attributes are the fantastic cast creations, for which the director himself is also surely deserving of credit…” Kim Cuculić, Novi list

07.07. utorak / Thursday 21,00 sati, Crekvina / 9 p.m., Crekvina dramski program / drama programme Teatar Rugantino / Rugantino Theatre, Zagreb Yasmina Reza: „Bog Masakra“ / “The God of Carnage” TEATAR RUGANTINO, YASMINA REZA: „BOG MASAKRA“ Redateljica: Franka Perković Scenograf: Ivo Knezović Kostimograf: Dijana Bourek Glume: Urša Raukar, Ivica Vidović, Boris Svrtan, Goran Grgić, Gordana Gadžić Yasmina Reza francuska je dramatičarka, glumica, spisateljica i scenaristica.

YASMINA REZA: THE GOD OF CARNAGE Director: Franka Perković Stage design: Ivo Knezović Costume design: Dijana Bourek Starring: Urša Raukar, Ivica Vidović, Boris Svrtan, Goran Grgić, Gordana Gadžić 22

Yasmina Reza is a French playwright, actress, novelist and screenwriter. She won the prestigious national Molière theatre award for her first dramatic piece, the humorous drama Conversations after a Burial in 1987, and later would again win this award twice. Her plays are performed with great success in theatres throughout the world. She has written seven dramatic plays to date. The God of Carnage is her newest drama, written in 2006, and its premier performance was put on in Zurich in December of that same year. Yasmina Reza's newest play is an insightful, provocative, revealing and cynical look at the mentality of the European citizen at the start of the 21st century. Under Reza's scalpel, a benign meeting of two typical Paris middle class couples is turned into a dissection of seemingly harmonious family relations, in short, the life that Europe is leading today, or how it pretends to live. The God of Carnageis a story about two pairs of parents who meet to discuss how to proceed after their 11-year old sons have fought in the park, with Ferdinand knocking out Bruno's two front teeth. The discussion begins very civilly, but it is very difficult to ascertain who is to blame, and who the victim is. For, perhaps Bruno provoked the attack, but then again, perhaps the source of Ferdinand's aggression should be sought out in the dysfunctional marriage of his parents. After an afternoon spent revealing the family secrets, the most important revelation is that the apple truly does not fall far from the tree, as when all else fails, the parents also have a tendency to resolve problems with their fists. Instead of a parental drama, a family drama and then a life drama is revealed, that culminates in common drunkenness, the revelation of deep dissatisfaction, their own superficiality, and the tender love of parents which, in the end and despite it all, defeats the God of Carnage. Though the drama bears a somewhat morbid title, it is an ironic commentary, and carries a dramatic form only in the general sense. Like the playwright's earlier works, this is a comedy, which this time tests the boundaries between barbarianism, and politically correct and civilized behaviour.

Bolj star bolj nor (Što stariji to luđi) – autobiografska

Mentol bonbon (Mentol bombon)– nije sve u novcu

Pridi k meni (Dođi k meni) – pjesma o kukavici

Ne mine niti dan (Ne prođe niti dan) – ocu

Utrujeni čarovnik (Umorni čarobnjak) –

25

kako je lagano biti pametan za druge

Ljubimec iz omare (Ljubavnik iz ormara) – alternativa dosadi u krevetu

Vse je tvoje (Sve je tvoje) – borba protiv narkotika

Alfa samec (Alfa mužjak) – L'etat c'est moi

AN EMBRACE OF (SLOVENIAN) LOVE Right from the start of his musical career, Zoran Predin did not want to walk the beaten and predictable routes. Ultimately, the open-mindedness that marks his creative work in fact arises from the boldness with which he chose and maintained his unique lifestyle. For his life's motto he has chosen – as he underlined in the chorus to the title song of the Lačni Franz album Na svoji strani (On My Side) – a passionate commitment to a strategically immutable position "on my side of a roguish smile." Zoran was, for example, a leftist and a proponent of the Partisan myth of a struggle for liberty when postpunk and/or electropop were "in", as he shaped his poetic ideals in keeping with his never diluted protoSlavic genes. For those who feel that putting the Partisan folk composition Jezero umire u tihoti (The lakes dies in silence) to music, or the recent "revival" of Bilećanka, is a Yugo-nostalgic sin, I would recall Cohen's version of the French folk song The Partisan as a much more probable source of inspiration, or "brotherhood of souls in space." That is in fact why I have no doubt, moreover, I have complete faith in the sincerity of Zoran's inclination to offer the support of his poetic, musical and performer's shoulders in a period of heightened political tension between his and our country with the aim of proving that there are still many reasons for sincere good-neighbourly relations. On my own behalf, I would like to welcome him and to express my gratitude for this goodwill tour in the hope that this will also be the reaction of his many Croatian fans and devotees. Once more, welcome friend, regardless of the fact that you come from Slovenia! (Darko Glavan)

Zoran Predin (born in Maribor on 16 June 1958), is a recognised Slovenian musician, poet and singer-songwriter. We know him by his brilliant music and many Slovenian films, TV series, plays, and by the countless lyrics that have practically become folk songs and unforgettable chansons. His first great love was basketball. As a perspective junior player he would spend the entire day on the court and made his way to junior national team preparation, when his overly shallow-set hipbones moved him to the amateur domain. To this day, he plays at least twice a week and avidly follows all basketball games. After switching the basketball for a guitar, the time of hedonism and poetry dawned. Basketball players were surpassed by poets and writers: Miller, Jones, Mailer, Baudelaire, Sartre, Camus, Bulgakov, Vonnegut, Boll, Heller, Gombrowich, Hesse, Kafka, Bukowski and many others. He established a rock band on 18 June 1979, naming it Lačni Franz (Hungry Franz) and imbuing it with all of his cynicism, sarcasm and sense of parody. Lačni Franz was a first league band in the former Yugoslavia. In eleven years of continued performances, with an average of fifty concerts a year, Predin has, as the leading songwriter, penned most of his compositions with Lačni Franz. Awards: SKOJ Seven Secretaries, Golden Bird, Zlati Petelini, Viktor 2006 He claims to be only at the half-way point of his work, and that the best is yet to come.

Zbog njegove prirode službena ga kulturna politika ignorira, i još neko vrijeme zasigurno neće postati dio redovitog sadržaja televizijskog i radijskog programa. Međutim, turbo-folk je u našoj je sredini sve prisutniji. Preko 30

Due to its nature, the official cultural policy has ignored this type of music and it will certainly not become a regular part of the television and radio programme in the near future. However, turbo-folk is becoming increasingly present in our society. From mobile phone melodies to the lifestyle of the new social elite, and clubs that are increasingly participating in creating the identity of a new generation. Turbo-folk is entering into every pore of society, and can no longer be stopped. After a period of spiritual renewal, will turbo-folk bring us a period of spiritual degeneration? This play will attempt to answer the question of what is so fascinating about this phenomenon, why more and more young people, and those not so young, are identifying with its stars and songs. The play examines whether a repressive approach is reducing or increasing interest in this type of music and points out a series of paradoxes surrounding turbo-folk. In other words, with this play, turbo-folk has finally received the right of citizenship as a social topic. The play Turbo-folk received the Grand Prix for the best event at the 9th International Chamber Theatre Festival in Umag, and the Ðuro Rošić award for best drama play of the Ivan pl. Zajc Croatian National Theatre house in Rijeka for the 2007/8 season. Oliver Frljić was awarded best director at the 9th International Chamber Theatre Festival in Umag, while Jelena Lopatić and Alen Liverić received the Ðuro Rošić award of the Ivan pl. Zajc Croatian National Theatre for best pair of actors. “In the context of Croatian theatre, the play Turbo-folk is an important step towards liberation. This brave play by Oliver 32

Frljić will certainly stir up opposing reactions, as seen in the demonstrative departure of a member of the audience during the premier. But the applause and approval at the end of the play were an external indicator of the maturity of the Rijeka audience, who in watching this play, had to come to terms with themselves.” Kim Cuculić, Novi list “The primordial power of this play, and the reason it delivers such a strong blow to the gut is in the rare ferocity of the collective theatrical energy in the Croatian theatre, continually accompanied by the loud music that in fact dictates the dramaturgy of the play, varying from classical turbo-folk to ethnic melodies. It is truly exciting to see the actors of the national theatre ready to completely bare themselves on the stage, and to be completely open to wounds, sweaty and out of breath, and be simultaneously spit out and kissed…” Tajana Gašparović, Vijenac “The coldness that springs from the national theatre's play is eliminated here, and the intensive work on the play brings satisfaction to even the most uninterested in the audience.”

Playwright Selma Sokolović 2008 / 2009 Season Robert Holman - Jonah & Otto a drama in five images placed in the present day Starring: Jonah – Dražen Šivak Otto – Zijah A. Sokolović Translation: Selma Dimitrijević Director: Zijah A. Sokolović Stage design: Igor Pauška Costume design: Zdravka Ivandija Music: Irena Popović Poster design: Igor Parisi Technical team: Nenad Rožanković, Zdravko Kovačević Stage Manager: Radmila Brodarac Production manager: Jasmin Novljaković This is a peaceful, but mysterious two-man play that makes one think. It tells of friendship, moving boundaries, prejudices and the chance encounter between 26-year old Jonah and 62-year old Otto, but without Holman's explanation of how these two men found themselves together. Over time, they become increasingly relaxed, find common ground, serve as the other's confidant, and various personal discoveries rise to the surface.

Cabaret Zijah A. Sokolović Premier performance, Ljubljana, 17 February 2006 Interludes 0–24 are small, short thoughts that arise amongst our long and important obligations in life, comprised of a multitude of daily thoughts arranged in the form of short stories. Several of these form the backbone of the cabaret, while the remaining stories are changed from performance to performance. The performance last approximately 90 36

minutes. The basic idea of Interludes 0–24 is that in the gallop of our civilization and the flood of capitalism, people do not put off the small, short pleasures that bring them tranquillity and peace of mind. Cervantes' interludes (entremeses) were small, short plays performed between acts in long plays, conceived as a restful break for the audience. “The cabaret performance Interludes 0–24 aims to touch upon the senselessness and lack of logic in overall human activities, with the awareness that humans are caught in the traps of civilization and loneliness, that this is our natural state of being, and that this cannot be cured, but only alleviated.”

27.07. ponedjeljak / Monday 21,00 sati, Crekvina / 9 p.m., Crekvina Glazbeno-scenski program / music comedy programme Ansambl narodnih plesova i pjesama Hrvatske LADO / LADO Croatian Folk Song and Dance Ensemble Ansambl narodnih plesova i pjesama Hrvatske LADO ove godine slavi 60 godina umjetničkog rada i djelovanja. LADO je profesionalni folklorni ansambl, osnovan 1949. godine sa zadaćom i ciljem istraživanja, prikupljanja, umjetničke obrade i scenskog prikazivanja najljepših primjera bogate hrvatske glazbene i plesne tradicije. LADO kroz svoj rad okuplja najpoznatije hrvatske etnokoreologe i koreografe, etnomuzikologe, glazbene aranžere i folkloriste, ali i skladatelje i dirigente nadahnute pučkim glazbenim stvaralaštvom. Svjetskom simpoziju zborske glazbe u Minneapolisu, u Sjedinjenim Državama. This year, the LADO Croatian Folk Song and Dance Ensemble celebrates its 60th anniversary. LADO is a professional folklore ensemble, founded in 1949 with the aim of researching, collecting, artistic interpretation and the stage performance of the prominent examples of Croatia's rich musical and dance tradition. In its work, LADO gathers the best-known Croatian ethno-choreologists and choreographers, ethnomusicologists, score-writers and folklorists, and composers and conductors inspired by folk music creativity. This has all resulted in an impressive choreographic and musical repertoire including over a hundred different choreographies and several hundred vocal, instrumental and 40

vocal-instrumental numbers, where original, authentic folk artistry is respected above all. The ensemble's 37 top dancers, also excellent singers, easily shift from a dance ensemble to a showcase folklore choir, while 15 brilliant musicians play some fifty different traditional and classical instruments. The LADO ensemble also has a unique collection of original folk costumes of great value and beauty (over 1,200 complete outfits), making every concert held by the ensemble, along with song and dance, also a kind of review of original Croatian traditional dress. All of this, along with the wondrous wealth of diversity of folklore present in Croatia's modest size, make LADO unique in the world, a fact recognised by audiences in the many concert halls around the world where LADO has performed: from the Royal Albert Hall in London, the City Centre in New York, the Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv and at Sydney Town Hall, to some 20 top concert halls in Japan, where LADO'S 27 concerts, held during a five-week tour in 2006, delighted over 50 thousand people who came to see them. LADO has received many awards and commendations for its work and services in promoting national heritage: the 2006 INA Annual Award for promoting Croatian culture abroad; a total of fourteen Porin music awards, including the 2002 Porin Lifetime Achievement Award; three City of Zagreb Awards (1963, 1968 and 2002); the Orlando Award at the 54th Dubrovnik Summer Festival in 2003; and the Ivan Lukačić Award at the 34th Varaždin Baroque Evenings in 2004. In 2002 LADO, was the European representative at the VI World Choral Music Symposium held in Minneapolis, USA.

sakamo“ proglašena najdražom i najboljom skladbom obnovljenog MIK-a, do sada je nastupala uvijek u društvu svojih prijatelja, no nikada sama. Karin Kuljanić, a singer with an exceptional lyrical voice and Mediterranean style, has chosen Kastav for her first ever independent concert! It is almost unbelievable that this four-time winner of the Melodies of Istria and Kvarner festival, whose performance of the song “Zami me sobun sakamo” has been proclaimed the best loved song of the revived festival, has only performed with friends, and never on her own. With her passionate expression and interpretation of songs, melding the beauty of voice and soul and her spontaneous and warm contact with the audience, she creates an 42

unforgettable musical experience and passes on the stories of life from our beautiful region. Love, as eternal inspiration, toward her child and her native soil, customs and traditions, are the most common themes in her songs. Always true to the Chakavian dialect of the Kvarner region, she has touched the hearts of her audiences with many songs born out of the cooperation with songwriters Mirjana Bobuš and Robert Grubišić, including: “Za te rojena”, “Neka ljubav moja sa”, “Nisi zavridel”, “Meni je srce blagoslov dalo”. Her duet with Ðani Maršan in the song “Večeri boje naranče” (“Orange coloured evening”) coloured Kvarner in orange and won over audiences in Istria, Kvarner and Dalmatia. During her long and successful career, she has participated in numerous festivals (Melodies of Istria and Kvarner, Split Festival, Zagreb-Fest, Zadar-Fest, Arena-Fest) and won many awards. But she also has another career. Karin graduated in the USA, completed her degree in clinical psychology and works at the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Ward at Rijeka Clinical Hospital. At her concert at Crekvina, Karin will be joined by the friends she has worked with for years, Mirjana Bobuš, Ðani Maršan, Robert Grubišić, Mario Battifiaca and the Veljak family. In this concert, Karin will present her entire Chakavian opus with her band, composed of many recognized musicians from our region. The song arrangements will be the result of the joint creative forces, and will make some known songs fresh. Karin, with her suggestive interpretations of Chakavian ballads will again prove that she is the audience's sweetheart.

Kulturni događaj sezone (Cyprus Weekly, December 1981). Publika, sposobna 43

Ambasadori rane muzike: dovoljnо je osvrnuti se i sumirati rezultate njihove delatnosti. Renesans – zvezda Festivala (Sestao letnji festival u Baskiji, juli 1991). Koncert godine (Gran Fiesta en Bilbao, El Correo Espannol, Bilbao, August 1991). Ovacije Renesansu! Renaissance The First Early Music Ensemble in South Eastern Europe founded in 1968 The Renaissance Ensemble from Belgrade was born in the autumn of 1968, when the musicians first began playing early music scores on historical instruments that Dragan Mladjenovic Shakespeare had brought from Prague and Vienna. The founders of the Ensemble, Miomir Ristic, Ljubomir Dimitrijevic, and D. M. Shakespeare (supported by two ladies Dusica Obradovic and Iskra Uzelac) gave their first concert on 14 January 1970 in the Gallery of Frescoes in Belgrade. Over its forty year history, the Renaissance Ensemble has given more than 3,000 concerts throughout Europe (7 in Spain, Portugal and Finland, 6 in France, Italy, Cyprees and Greece, 4 in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Russia, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Sweden, 3 in Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia and Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia), in the Middle East (Syria) and in North Africa (Algeria), and during the Adriatic summer tours (1982–88). Many splendid critiques by music critics testify to the artistic success of the Renaissance Ensemble: Such cries of praise and enthusiasm have not been for a long time (Dubrovnik Summer Festival, August 1975). The 44

cultural event of the season (Cyprus Weekly, December 1981). The audience capable of comparing top musicians who very frequently performed here in Paris called out “encore” many times to Belgrade musicians (St Julian le Pauvre, Paris, April 1982). Successo vivissimo! (An enormous hit!) (La Stampa, Turin, December 1982). The audience did not want to leave the hall (Vjesnik, Zagreb, January 1984). Much applause for everything (Bonner Rundschau, April 1984). Apostles of Byzantine and Serbian music (Pannonian Early Music Festival in Hungary, August 1985). A top concert! (Dubrovnik Summer Festival, August 1986). Early Music Ambassadors: It is enough only to form a retrospective and to try to sum up the results of their activities. Then compliments such as “creative” and “successful” sound rather modest (Sarajevo Winter, February 1989). Renesans la estrella del Ferstival (The Renaissance Star of the Festival)(Sestao Summer Fest, July 1991). El concierto del anno! (The concert of the year!) (Gran Fiesta in Bilbao, El Correo Espannol, Bilbao, August 1991). Ovations to Renaissance! THE GUBEC QUARTET The Gubec Quartet, along with three nominations, was winner of the Porin music award in the Best Folklore Music category for 2007 in a very strong field of competitors including established folk music performers. The Porin awards ceremony was broadcast live by Croatian Radio & Television (HRT) in April of 2007. Following the release of their album Ak sem ti srčeko ranil (If I have wounded your heart) in December of 2006, there was a rapid growth in the level of interest for the Kajkavian melodies of Zagreb's "Old Town" and the Hrvatsko Zagorje region, and the Gubec Quartet appeared in all of HRT's leading music shows featuring domestic music. They are eagerly watched and listened to on all 46

local and cable TV stations and radio stations in Croatia. The Gubec Quartet collaborates with the H R T Ta m b u r i t z a Orchestra, conducted by Siniša Leopold, and records musical numbers with the HRT Show Band for the needs of HRT, and with Radio Sljeme. Their title song of the first album, Spoved (Confession), was a nation-wide hit and became popular among the emigrant communities. The success the boys from the band achieved with their first album and the popularity they earned with their charming performances and multivoice songs allowed them to perform at concerts across Our Beautiful Homeland. Every year in mid-autumn, the Gubec Quartet holds a now traditional, and always sold out, gala concert at the large auditorium of Vatroslav Lisinki Concert Hall, broadcast by HRT. They collaborate with eminent musicians such as Marko Novosel, Gabi Novak, Arsen Dedić, Drago Diklić, Zrinko Tutić, Jasna Zlokić, Ðani Stipaničev, Jacques Houdek and many others. They are currently recording a new album, Tak mala ti je ruka (How small your hand is), scheduled for release in September of 2009. The album is packed with new Kajkavian hits from all of the regions in which the Kajkavian dialect is spoken. The quartet includes band members Vinko Ančić, a tenor with the Komedija Theatre house, Željko Grozaj, baritone, Adalbert Turner Juci, an actor and singer with the Komedija Theatre house and Rajko Suhodolčan as the quartet leader. Regularly appearing with them as musical accompaniment is the Fakini Tamburitza Ensemble, the best tamburitza band from the Hrvatsko Zagorje region. 47

(Welcome…newcomers!) Director: Serđo Dlačić Starring:Vesna Slosar, Andrija Frlan, Vojka Blečić, Mirna Rubeša and Meri Cech The tenth anniversary of cooperation between the Kastav Folk Theatre and author Vjeko Alilović was marked in 2008 with their seventh joint play. Dobro nan prišli...prišlići! (Welcome… newcomers!) is another play in which the Kastav Folk Theatre portrays the grandeur of high quality acting, playfulness and love towards the Chakavian tradition. As in past performances, the theatre deals with an ordinary man, brought to a seemingly hopeless situation, which he attempts to overcome through a simple, daily way. But will everything go as planned this time? In the crossroads between daily routine and the strange times in which we live, nothing is as it seems…And here another story is constructed and is sure to interest and delight the public not only in Kastav, but everywhere the play is performed. The modern topic of the play will be recognizable to every soul who, in today's time, is witness to the magnificent ways of the Lord…Dobro nam prišli...prišlići (Welcome…newcomers!) and the Kastav Folk Theatre bring, once again, animation and joy, both through the play and through the attractiveness of the story, the scenography… and even through courage! The Kastav ensemble, which has received numerous awards and is favoured wherever their stage is erected, will bring joy to our lives once again, as well as a detachment from daily worries and a confirmation that Chakavian tradition is alive and well in these regions! Whether you are newcomers or not, this ensemble cannot be disliked... 49

FESTIVAL ČAKAVSKE ŠANSONE „ČANSONFEST“ KASTAV / 5th FESTIVAL OF CHAKAVIAN CHANSONS, KASTAV Udruga Kanat – Kastav u suradnji s udrugom Kastafsko kulturno leto već petu godinu za redom vrlo uspješno organizira Festival čakavske šansone, koji usmjeren k očuvanju i unapređenju čakavštine. Dosadašnji uspjeh Festivala, njegov pozitivan odjek, oduševljenje koje je izazvao, kako među publikom tako i među svim glazbenicima izvođačima te autorima čakavske šansone, opravdali su potrebu organizacije ovakvog specijaliziranog festivala usmjerenog k očuvanju čakavske besede izražene kroz glazbu. 5. Kastafskega kulturnega leta i to 28. kolovoza. The Kanat–Kastav Association, in collaboration with the Kastav Cultural Summer Association has very successfully organised the Festival of Chakavian Chansons for five years running. The primary aim of the festival is to preserve and promote the Chakavian dialect. The success of the festival to date, the positive response it has received, the enthusiasm it kindled, both among the audiences and all the performing musicians and authors of Chakavian chansons, has justified the need to organise this kind of specialised festival, which aims to preserve Chakavian speech, as expressed in music. The ČAnsonfest – Kastav 2009 5th Festival of Chakavian Chansons will be held again this year, as it has every year to date, at the closing ceremony of the 18th Kastav Cultural Summer (28 August). Just as in its third and fourth editions, the 5th ČAnsonfest will have a production and a competitive segment, and will encourage the creation of new compositions. The best compositions submitted to the 5th ČAnsonfest Competition will vie for this year's festival prize awards: Best Lyrics Award, ČAnson Best Composition Award, Best Interpretation Award and the Public Choice Award. Over the past two years, the Croatian Radio & Television Company has provided significant support for the festival, by aired recordings of the festival evening programs. This year, when the festival marks its first small jubilee, Croatian Television will broadcast the event live.

22.05.-28.08.2009. LIKOVNI PROGRAM 2009. / ART PROGRAMME 2009 GALERIJA CRKVICE SV. TROJICE / HOLY TRINITY CHAPEL GALLERY O GALERIJSKOM PROSTORU CRKVICE SV. Dio izložbenog programa financijski je pomognut i od Turističke zajednice Grada Kastva The small Holy Trinity Chapel on Lokvina Square in Kastav dates back to the 15th century and is a cultural monument. The interior, comprised of a sanctuary of frescoes with old Glagolitic writing, has proven to be an astonishing inspiration and demanding exhibit space for modern artists of all trades. That is the reason why this gallery is a great challenge as an exhibit space for most of today's artists. The chapel's gallery has been used as a gallery space for more than a decade (since 1995), and has profiled itself for exhibits since 2005 with its program of selected authors and professional curators. Most exhibition programs take place during the Kastav Cultural Summer manifestation (from June to the end of August), and covers all dates which are important for the city of Kastav: St. Helena and Kastav Town Day. The exhibit space is equipped with standard gallery equipment and reflectors, as well as technical staff and security services, and working hours during exhibits is daily from 10 a.m. to noon and 6 to 9 p.m. From 2008, the Holy Trinity Chapel Gallery was included on the list of official galleries in the Republic of Croatia. Its program proceeds under the organization of the Kastav Cultural Summer Association. The activities and program is 55

financed by the Town of Kastav, while co-financing is provided by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia and Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. Part of the exhibition program is financially assisted by the Kastav Tourist Board. Mirna Sišul, Ljetovanje 1“, akrilik na platnu, 2008., 70x70 cm / Summer Vacation 1, Acrylic on canvas, 2008, 70x70 cm 58

In Step With Me Laughter of a Passer-by Sun in the Sky (Elfrida Matuč – Mahulja: Summer/haiku) With her Summer Vacation series Mirna Sišul continues the polished elaboration of a meticulously crafted visual world, a world that matured a few years ago and one she has based on a strictness and discipline of contemplation, on an analytical approach and on the expressive quality of visual media - and on a spontaneity and directness of approach. All this has not passed unnoticed by the juries of the various exhibitions and art events in which she has participated, for which she has received many awards. What gives her painting expressiveness, even at first glance, is the freshness of her visual contemplation, and the primary quality and directness of her visual technique. Her restrained and reduced visual vocabulary of muted 59

colourations and purified, closed forms undeniably captivates, as does its structural compactness. Also engrossing is the specific duality of the juxtaposition of the two fundamental elements of expression in her paintings – line and colour, where the line is delicate, lyrical and firm, and the colour emphatic and suggestive. It is emphatic not in the sense of an eruptive openness, but rather in the sense of a deliberately muted (but suggestive) minimalist "frugality" of the black – white pair, into which there are occasion spurts of strong, usually red, accents. Lines stand out within the frame of the painting by their visual and textual (hand written text) expressiveness, creating, together with the colour, a wonderfully linear-colouristic, minimalist-symbolic ensemble, which functions, in the frame of this artistry, under the dictate of the imagination and of the spirit; imagination – and perhaps some distant memory. Colour, on the other hand, is applied here with a gesticulatory motion that follows the rhythm of an inner energy and an internal motion. A stroke that reflects emotion and poetic fantasy. That is why, regardless of the fact that one would expect the theme of summer and vacationing to have ebullient colours of the sun and light, here it is, not without reason, reduced to the restricted interaction of black and white, as it likely speaks with greater expression than ardent and expressive colours would. Finding her wellspring in elements of reality, Mirna Sišul observes through the optics of her own perception, transforming actuality into an entirely new reality, in which elements of the experienced and desired, everyday and timeless, are joined, and in which visual media have their own individuality, and autonomy.

Branko Lenić, „BERAM 2“, kompjutorska grafika, kolažirana, doslikana, 2009. / BERAM 2, computer graphic, collaged, painted, 2009 64

Una Cultura Per La Pace", u organizaciji UNICEF-a i UNESCO-a, ambijentalnu kompoziciju pod nazivom "The Dawn of Man", s kojom je nastupio u Palači Pravde u Trstu. DEAN ČERNEKA was born in Rijeka in 1974. He began working with music in the late 1980s. His first compositions were in the genre of hard trance – electronic music characterised by fast rhythms. He has performed to capacity crowds in most Croatian clubs. In late, 1995 he released Charting the Heavens, an independent album he issued under the stage name CYBORGIX 4E75. The album was released by the independent record label Ambrec - Ambiental Recording, and has been included in the world's largest collection of electronic music titles, DISCOGS (www.discogs.com). In the mid 1990s, he shifted to the composition of experimental-ambient music, which he continues to compose for art exhibitions and various performances. In 2000, at the invitation of the Art Academy of Trieste he composed The Dawn of Man for the U.N.A. Una Cultura Per La Pace international exhibition organised by UNICEF and UNESCO, which he performed at the Palace of Justice in Trieste. The concert was later broadcast on the Italian national television station RAI. Over the past 15 years, he has had over fifty solo performances, including appearances with world famous Macedonia drummer Mihail Parushev (formerly of the Vlatko Stefanovski Trio). He is currently working on the release of Zarathustra's Sacrificial Altar of Stone, an album of experimental ambient music, featuring music he has composed for a number of exhibitions by Rijeka-based artist Branko Lenić. In his work, he relies most heavily on the use of synthesizers, percussion and ethnic instruments.

Tragovima prošlosti i otiscima bivstvovanja. A onda ih u svojim radovima – posebno u grafikama, pomoću nove tehnologije redizajnirati i ispričati priču u novome kontekstu.

jedan gotovo ritualan način, „skidajući“ elementarnim grafičkim putem otiske s kamena i čineći ih vidljivima. Poruke prenosi i video-zapis umjetničke performance-akcije uzimanja otisaka s kamenih ploča. In his creative work, in his assemblages and especially in his graphic art, Branko Lenić always loves to delve into traces and imprints. Vestiges of the past and imprints of existence. In the natural surroundings of his native clime he enjoys discovering these in some focal point of history and energy, and arranging their fragments at points of collective recollection. And then, with the help of new technologies, he designs them in his works, graphics in particular, and tells the tale in a new context. In the process he uses a kind of personal "memory card" of the landscapes he is intimate with, and the natural and human constructs steeped into them; a "card" he has filled touring solitary places, soaked in energy, gathering prints. The prints of our distant ancestors in this case, which he has now, within large graphiccollages, video projections and action-performances, used in the Imprints multimedia project. The underlying idea was to follow the traces of generations past and to visit the places of collective recollection through a tour of Istrian medieval churches. And then there, through imprints that have been left – from those on the frescoes and in Glagolitic inscriptions, to those imaginary, invisible to the eye, the hands and feet impressed into the stone over the centuries – to interpret eternal messages of spirituality and existence. For this project, Lenić has read them for the most part in the medieval church of St. Mary on the Rocks (Sveta Marija na Škrilinah) in Beram (Istria), dating from the same century as the Chapel of the Holy Trinity in Kastav, and with its frescoes, painted by Master Vincent of Kastav. These are powerful bonds between two places in the same region, and so their combined, but contemporary interpretation, was for Lenić quite logically, but also globally necessary, in Kastav. Necessary because in our world of dislocated values it tells a tale of identity. It tells an old tale of ancestors and of values that should be preserved. At the same time it is told through new media, in a contemporary fashion. Medieval churches, especially those in Istria, are a source of fascination for Lenić (but not just for him!), because they have remained to this day centuries-old and almost untouched "depositories of imprints" and places of positive energy. Over the centuries, they have always been a place of constant pilgrimage, and then places of accumulated human emotion, and here somewhere, in these settings, in the walls and stone of these small edifices, powerful energy and spirituality has been preserved. Mixed with an abundance of intimate folk beliefs, reaching deep into the past, these 67

small churches have remained a place of the expression (and presence) of common roots. Entering them, filled with humility and awe, our ancestors "imprinted" it all somewhere in the stone, and also inscribed it in their linear Glagolitic script inscriptions (yet another bond with the Chapel of the Holy Trinity in Kastav, which also bears medieval Glagolitic inscriptions). It has all remained in these holy places as a kind of vow, as faith and as hope for future generations, for our present generations. It has remained as our mark of identity and our invisible bond to roots that we always in some way recognise and with which we bond. Here, in this project, in this action-performance, we bond with these roots in an almost ritual way, "transcribing"» imprints from the stone by way of elementary graphics and rendering them visible. For its part, Lenić's graphic interpretation of the Beram frescoes by Master Vincent of Kastav bears all of the characteristics of the present day: they are 17 collaged, painted and computer-generated graphics in the form of ribbons which drop the entire height of the Kastav gallery, from the ceiling to the floor, and transmit visual messages and tales to people though in a new way, different from the medieval. They transmit them accompanied by contemporary music performed on new music media, melding the sounds of Istrian folk music and of church melodies. The messages are also transmitted by way of video recordings of the artistic performance-action of taking the prints off the stone slabs. Before us, then, is an eternal truth expressed in a new way, as a whole, completing the circle, showing us just how much this theme is always a current one.

Duje Jurić, „Ambijent“, svjetlosni mobili, instalacija, 2009. / Ambience, light emitting mobile, installation, 2009 Autor fotografije / photo by: Fedor Vučemilović 70

Mijenjajući mu prostorno – vremenske koordinate i utječući na kategoriju percepcije; aktivirajući mu sva čula i iznad svega stvarajući snažan vizualni doživljaj. Duje Jurić's art has been recognised and awarded for many years now, not only because it is imaginative, intuitive, playful and inquisitive (but with a professional seriousness, precision and organisation), but also because it gives the 71

artist's visual commentary on the global recollection of the historical avant-garde (neo-geo), telling an earlier geometric tale in a completely new and contemporary fashion. And while Duje JurÄ?ić's art may, at first glance, appear to be utterly disciplined and strictly analytical, based on a geometric order, and on skilfully organised and structured relationships, and above all on an almost mathematically calculated balance within a firmly constructed compositional screen, that is only the first impression. Because what appears to be strictly premeditated with this artist is, in fact, free and associative. What appears to be systematised and orderly, suddenly caves in by some detail and becomes expressive and imaginative; unfettered and set into motion. Drawing above all on light and colour, it is thick with vibration and quivering, and constant dynamic spatial breakthroughs, existing, despite the always somewhere present geometric considerations, in a state of "constant electrification" and thereby wondrously optically challenging. Especially when it stands out in a space and functions like an ambience of light; like a powerful optical sensation, drawing the viewer with its almost fascinating strength into its visual and energy zone and occupying all his attention. Altering the viewer's time and space coordinates and affecting the category of perception; activating his every sense and, above all, creating a powerful visual experience. The Ambience installation is the latest of Juric's light-emitting ambient installations. It is a work that, in relation to his works to date, contains the essence of his geometric morphology, reduced practically to minimalism, but enriched with the synergy of the media of light and movement, but also of colour. All together, it functions like a contemporary multimedia spatial installation, vibrating with special colours (and under special light), one that is mobile and hums gently, so that when we find ourselves in this wondrous Ambience, we have the sensation of having stepped into another dimension and into a new world. We have the sensation of having immersed ourselves into something that is simultaneously thick, fluid and transparent. Into something tangible, but at the same time unreal. Into a coloured light that has the trappings of vision, but also the palpability of reality. But the artist does not place us here as observers only, but also as actors, leaving us the freedom to explore and knowing that the coloured light will certainly possess the magical, attractive power that will activate us. And in the moment it activates us, the artist knows that our perception will change and transform the space-time dimension. And so whoever enters this Ambience, as a result of the combined effects of colour, light, motion and sound, and their wondrous mutual effect on all the senses, has not only the feeling of a change in the character of space and the category of time, but also the sense of a new, or different, way of comprehending presence. Because this special colour and this light, rendered dynamic from within, and from without, with its humming audial setting, will certainly not only alter the haptic experience of Jurić's mobiles, but also the sense of reality, and a shift will take place in our perception whereby we will perhaps take a different view of the world.

In spite of the phases of gesture and expression of his earlier works, Ðanino Božić has always in some way shown an inclination to optical order and an analytical approach, and a love of concrete and geometric art. From 2000 to the present, he has definitely opted for the language of geometry in his art. Ever since then his works, paintings, objects and installations, bear the stamp of strictly balanced order, geometric purity, "optical completeness", and a regularity and symmetry achieved almost on the basis of a mathematical formula. It appears that all variations and changes are mutually balanced here and harmonised along some modular principle. And although we shall always find something new in his work, because he explores the visual and experiments almost daily, this novelty will be integrated into it as a 75

whole by a kind of "modular law of mutability" – in proportions that are also repeated within existing modular structures. This is especially the case with his metal reliefs, which consist of various metal plates of geometric forms, layered on a wooden base in some given geometric relationships, imparting the impression of flawless balance and optical comfort. These reliefs are of small format (about 24x40 cm) and were part of the artist's large 2008 exhibition at Rijeka's Kortil Gallery. In the foreword to the exhibition catalogue, Sabina Salamon knowingly elaborated how the artist, in these reliefs, through variations based on the research of optical and mathematical values, works constantly on creating order within the optical field he has given himself within the frame of paintings/objects. The eye, however, constantly translates this optical phenomenon into a mental significance that, however scientific, represents pure visual pleasure, the pleasure of viewing. Salamon also explains how the artist introduces order into disorder. He does so by observing the fundamental regularities of the world in which we live, and which is situated within the space-time coordinates in which we exist and perceive. Božić observes the structures and regularities that do not always have to be clearly prominent; which exist in some canonised proportions we are not always aware of and which are, ultimately, often invisible to us. With the aid of symmetry, and the simplest example of regularity, he flawlessly visually materialises this. Metal reliefs of layered plates, as a kind of not only thematic, but also optical modular whole, are abundant sources of challenges. At the Chapel of the Holy Trinity Gallery, they are not only a visual challenge in and of themselves, but also stand as a challenge to another module: the medieval space of a church of strange proportions. In such a constellation this exhibition is in a way an ambiental project and represents an answer to the challenge of establishing a tense, though harmonic, balance of space and time.

Adresa i kontakt / Address and contact: Devčićeva 43, 10290 Zaprešić Tel. 099 26 84 355 Već niz godina Mirjana Petrin slika svoj ciklus „Kozmike“, u kojem istražuje nove mogućnosti suvremene slike – njezino oprostorenje i širenje, te pulsiranje u prostoru. Osjećaje (autorica) izražava paletom, a kompoziciju gradi bojom i konstrukcijom ploha zaobljenih rubova, koje spaja i povezuje u cjelinu. 79

For a number of years now Mirjana Petrin has painted her Cosmics series of paintings, in which she explores the new possibilities of contemporary painting – its spatialization, expansion and pulsation in space. The basic idea is to create an image-object, one that functions in space both by its shape and by its content. The shape of the image is closely related to its content and is a challenge to the emergence of this shape. Flowers are a frequent motif in the Cosmics series, or a part of the landscape, but it does not reflect reality, but comes rather from memories and dreams, and is a reflection of the imagination. The motif is also a symbol; both a critical eye, and a vision of a new world, one in which the living content "cannot be demarcated" (or is boundless!), something Mirjana Petrin emphasises through the title of the entire series. The author has been painting this series since 2002, and has to date, exploring it and immersing herself in it visually and semantically, subdivided it into 3 sub-series, creating a kind of trilogy related to the fundamental natural elements: water, earth and air. Ahead of her 2007 exhibit (of the then new part of the series) at the Municipal Museum in Varaždin, exhibition curator, Ljerka Šimunić, wrote this inspired entry in the exhibition catalogue: "Mirjana Petrin's paintings … are delicate and quiet regions with an inner illumination, (that) floats over reality. The colours are radiant, and even the darker regions bear within themselves a quantum of light. As if the Mediterranean slept within them. It is difficult to determine the painting's space immediately – it is deceptive and continues suggestively outside of real space…, assisted by a structure composed of several parts of canvas and MDF panels. The paintings are precisely structured, with great skill. (The artist) expresses emotion through her palette, and builds her composition with colour and a structure of surfaces with curved edges, which join and bond into a whole. It is all bound by internal bonds and is an expression of the artist's free will and personal temperament, (and so) there is no trace of compromise here, recent artistic trends or tastes other than the artist's own." All those who have written to date about the painting of Mirjana Petrin have felt the lyrical-poetic note she builds into her painting on the one hand, and her unquestionable mastery of the art, an aspiration towards structure and the 81

construction of the painting itself, and the relationship she establishes with space on the other. Petrin points out that she always allows the "painting to lead her from within". From within, but starting from a two-dimensional base and her perceptive vantage points. She has emphasised the almost limitless possibilities for the development of the Cosmics series saying that "a painting is life in space which possesses form," something she has confirmed for some time with the imaginative construction of her paintings, composed of several surfaces of various shapes (rounded and rectangular). In her latest image-objects she has allowed a greater penetration of space, and they are gradually taking on new vantage points.

He completed his post-graduate studies in the Master's workshop of Professor Krsto Hegedušić (1966–1971). From 1971 to 1974, he collaborated with Professor Hegedušić in designing and executing the frescoes at the Sutjeska Battle Memorial Museum in Tjentište. Throughout this entire period, he lived alternatively in China, Zagreb, Tjentište and in Italy. From 1975 to 1994, he worked at the Naprijed publishing house as art editor, and the editor of children's books. He also worked as graphic editor at the Paradoks magazine, and worked for the Školska knjiga, Mladost, and Naša djeca publishing companies, and the magazine Smib. He also worked as a set designer and illustrated TV stories for the TV-Zagreb educational program, and as a set and costume designer for the theatre and film. He also worked as a graphic designer for books, posters and promotional material, for which he received several awards and commendations. In 1986, he became an honorary lecturer at the Institute for Design of the Faculty of Textile Technology in Zagreb, for the subjects of painting, drawing and nudes. In 1993, he was appointed an associate professor at the same faculty, as full professor in 2000 and he was granted tenure in 2005. He has staged solo exhibits since 1967 and has to date staged 65 solo exhibitions, and participated in numerous group exhibits in the country and abroad. He is the recipient of many painting awards (drawing - Rijeka, aquarelle - Karlovac, at Ex tempore Grožnjan and at Ex tempore Volosko), and for graphic design (for the designs of many posters and postal stamps).

materijom. Jobovo more je dio božamstvene, veličanstvene prirode i to more on s poštovanjem uvažava.

What has always fascinated Ratko Janjić Jobo in the town of Kastav is the town's vista, raised above the wide expanse of the open sea. It has always appeared to him (and not only to him) that one could feel somewhat archaic here – like an elevated rock, exposed to the winds and defiant. But one can often feel like a ruler here – over this beautiful bay and above these grey-blue waters and its distant horizons (we know from historical documents that the rulers of Kastav were in fact once the heirs of the bay under Kastav). It is no wonder that Jobo was always enchanted by this "Sea of Kastav", which he regarded in awe from on high in the town. Because the basic theme of his paintings, which he paints every day (even in his small, cramped, Zagreb atelier, with a window to the sky) – is the sea. He paints it like mountains and white-crested hills of blue; as a deep rolling and black shadows on large canvases. But also as "frozen", sharply cut cubes, in which he emphasises sediments of illuminated turquoise and blue. The most imposing are, however, his "great waters" – rolling seas, masses driven from within, which are viewed from several angles, into which one enters enchanted to be surrounded by a living, all-inundating matter. His seas have always possessed a kind of drama, a fluid though palpable volume and their own expression of colour and light. And they are never just the play of the surface. Jobo's sea is a part of a divine, magnificent nature, a sea he respectfully acknowledges. He knows its temper when it threatens and is angered and knows how to communicate with it when it is calm and tame. When he visually materialises the sea, it is full of symbolism, but also ebullient with an abundance of colour and light. 86

Even a decade ago, Ratko Janjić Jobo was fascinated by the space of the Chapel of the Holy Trinity in Kastav. It fascinated him with its peaceful (though geometrically irregular) volume, within which the area of the sanctuary and the altar is imposed as both attribute and main accent. The challenge of the sea under Kastav and the challenge of the space of the Church of the Holy Trinity, with the altar area, have been an inspiration for the painter of the project of this special exhibition, a project of symbolically bringing the sea into the church and its Consecration. And this Consecration, as a confirmation of the love of this mythical, proud town and the great sea, is played out on the altar, as the visual-scenic hub of events, while Jobo's paintings of the sea are arranged through the remaining area of the church. Specific states of the sea (a deep and dark sea, threatening and foaming, driven by the southerly sirocco wind and churned by the north-easterly bora wind, but also calm and spiritualised by God's clemency, and illuminated by light) which are symbols and metaphors, playing the role of stage images of Genesis. Genesis that flows like a symbolic tale through the entire area of the church in a festive/holy fashion. And so the paintings, their formats and their colouristic procedure are arranged like a kind of Stations of the Cross at sea; like the path of the Passion and the path of Knowledge, while the direction of their movement is towards the altar: the place of Genesis and the place of primordial origin.

Time zagovara novo shvaćanje glazbe njegovi radovi uvijek iznova polariziraju klasičnu scenu (ali također i džez scenu…): stapanjem klasike, džeza i glazbe svijeta, ciljanom primjenom zvučne estetike kao sredstva za izražavanje Bachove glazbe... na svojoj električno-akustičnoj gitari formulira nove načine gledanja i slušanja Bachove glazbe te stare glazbe općenito redovan je gost na renomiranim međunarodnim festivalima džeza i klasike (između ostalih Bachfest Leipzig, Köthener Bachtage, WDR Nachtmusik...), održava koncerte u brojnim koncertnim dvoranama poput Alte Oper Frankfurt ili sa Zagrebačkom filharmonijom, sudjeluje na brojnim radijskim produkcijama (WDR, MDR, BR, HR, i sl.)... Renato Rožić & Raul sen Gupta hi-end guitar and tabla Renato Rožić, Croatian guitarist and composer living in Köln, Germany, is a pioneer in the field of new sound

aesthetics and artistic improvisation As initiator of the project “aesthetica nova”, the concept of “improvisation” in classical music implies stylistically

smashing the given notes (which was typical during Bach's time), aimed at exploring the possibilities of musical freedom and the emergence of independent form. With that, he advocates a new comprehension of music Time and time again, his pieces polarize the classical scene (and the jazz scene…): the melding of the classics, jazz and world music, a targeted application of sound aesthetics as a means of expression for Bach's music… On his electric - acoustic guitar, he formulates new ways of perceiving and listening to Bach's music, and old music in general He is a regular guest at renowned international jazz and classical music festivals (such as the Bachfest Leipzig, Köthener Bachtage, WDR Nachtmusik...), he has held concerts in numerous concert halls such as the Alte Oper Frankfurt or with the Zagreb Philharmonic, and participated in numerous radio productions (WDR, MDR, BR, HR, etc.)... Raul sen Gupta is a true virtuous on the tabla, a demanding instrument: following his classical training, he studied jazz percussion and then completed the study of classical tabla under well known professor Pandit S h a n ka r a G h o s h a i n Calcuta, India; he has toured through Europe, North Africa, India and the USA with the following names: P i i r p a u k e , Exhausted Groove, A s h r a f S h a r i f K h an, DHWANI, and participated on flamenco and latino projects; t e l e v i s i o n performances on ARD, ZDF and NDR ... 95

Oğur se smatra majstorom turskih narodnih instrumenata “bağlama”, “kopuz” i “oud” “Telvin - Coloring”... a Change of Colors, a Change of Moods...from Anatolia Direction Jazz... Erkan Oğur Quartet ERKAN OĞUR - fretless guitar, electric guitar, lute BAKI DUYARLAR - piano İLKİN DENİZ - upright bass TURGUT ALP BEKOĞLU - drums, percussion the simple meaning of “Telvin” is colours or colouring something or someone. Telvin, as a musical collaboration, is three musicians's aim and efforts to create a new path of music melting their homeland's melodies and feelings with their beloved jazz experience once you are connected with the music, you start feeling something, it's different and deep, yet hard to name. A very old land's musical feast is served; it's an experiment with no fear of changing the original or losing the reality. It's personal, totally depends on the ones creating it, a result of their lives, childhoods, experiences, regrets and joys. You hear their story and are inspired to create your own, in your own way Erkan Oğur, a worldwide musical virtuoso and inventor; sits on the heart of this musical transition and is accompanied by two talented musicians İlkin Deniz and Turgut Alp Bekoğlu and, particulary for the performance in Kastav, by the pianist Baki Duyarlar that share the way and help building the unique happening. Telvin has been taking part in numerous festivals and concerts in Turkey and around the globe since 1995 Erkan Oğur is the kind of person that doesn't like to be explained, narrated or expressed. He prefers to be known as someone in

the search of music, free of all material depictions a divine explorer of music, Oğur dove deep into Turkish melodies and folk songs as well as the historical past of his

homeland. As a performer to obtain these melodies, he modified his instrument and finally invented the fretless classical guitar in 1976 is traveling around the world to perform his unique compositions inspired by Turkish folk songs, his 1996 album “Bir Ömürlük Misafir” ranked 4 in European lists. His collaborations with Djivan Gasparyan are admired by a wide group of music-lovers and he won “Best Film Music” Awards for his works in the acclaimed-movie “Eşkıya”. Oğur is regarded as a master of Turkish folk instruments “bağlama”, “kopuz” and “oud” 99
