Message from the President

I have such fond memories of being in school! Socializing with friends, passing notes during detention, my favorite teachers, that rectangle cheese pizza, and of course my art and music classes! One pillar of ArtsBuild’s mission is promoting and supporting the role of the arts in education, so we’ve focused our annual report on just that—the work we do in education. We feel this is especially important coming out of the pandemic, and we have a renewed excitement about creating access for people of all ages to learn and experience the arts in Chattanooga and Hamilton County.

So much of what we do at ArtsBuild through programs, grantmaking and advocacy work ties directly to using the arts for learning, whether that means using the arts as a lens to better understand math and history, seeing the world in a new way because of an arts experience, exploring a career in the arts, or gaining technical skills to be successful in the arts and creative sector workforce.

Our efforts have been noticed. ArtsBuild was recently nominated for the Future Ready & Innovation Award at the Hamilton County Schools Partners in Education Awards event. We are proud of our long-standing and ongoing partnership with Hamilton County Schools and so many other education partners in Chattanooga. It takes a village to create the culture and quality of education we want to see in our community.

We hope you enjoy this “portfolio” of highlights from our past year. We thank each and every ArtsBuild donor, partner, and supporter—it is because of you that we can build a stronger community through the arts.

Arts Integration Training

The pandemic didn’t prevent us from continuing our annual teacher training workshops. In 2021, we invited Lenore Blank Kelner to do a series of multi-day virtual workshops for local educators about arts education and cultural relevance through dance and drama. Lenore has been a presenter with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts since 1982 and was a Master Artist for the Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning through the Arts for 25 years. Lenore is the author of The Creative Classroom and co-authored A Dramatic Approach to Reading Comprehension

In 2022, we were finally able to resume meeting in person, so we invited guest teaching artist Daniel Barash, another Kennedy Center National Workshop Leader, to come to Chattanooga to work with teachers and students to experience learning history in a new way, through shadow puppetry. We also teamed up with the Tennessee Aquarium to take advantage of the “Washed Ashore” exhibit in order to illustrate how the arts can be incorporated into science lessons.

Imagine!

This year we celebrated 13 years of the Imagine! arts education initiative that ArtsBuild created with the intention of providing a systematic introduction to the arts for Hamilton County elementary school students. The program serves up to 14,000 students each year giving each grade level a unique opportunity to go on a field trip.

On the Horizon

In January, ArtsBuild will provide transportation for middle and high school students to see Americans and the Holocaust: A Traveling Exhibition for Libraries from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the American Library Association, an exhibit presented locally at the Chattanooga Public Library.

Hands-on Experience

Four college students were chosen to participate in the 2022 ArtsBuild Opportunity Fellows program this summer. Each student was placed in a paid part-time internship with a local arts organization. Some of those internships even led to jobs. Emily Ruiz, for example, worked on a project for the Association of Visual Arts to digitize several exhibitions over the summer. She subsequently was hired on as part-time staff, working outside of school as the Gallery Assistant. ArtsBuild supports professional development of college students who are interested in becoming arts administrators and leaders in the arts.

Artists as Entrepreneurs

Tech Goes Home for the Arts is a new program that we launched during the pandemic. It is designed to teach artists or small arts organizations how to monetize their online presence and use digital and social media to connect to their audiences. To date, the program has graduated 126 participants! Tech Goes Home for the Arts is currently offered bi-annually for adults and once each summer for high school students.

Supporting the Careers of Artists

While most of ArtsBuild funding goes through grants to support organizations, we are fortunate to have resources to make significant grants to individual artists. We also see the need for equitable funding opportunities to advance the careers of artists that are representative of our community, so we established the Racial Equity Grants for Individual Artists and the Artists Work grants program. By early next year, we will have awarded grants totaling more than $500,000 to a talented group of amazing artists. Growing the capacity for the careers of artists in Chattanooga and Hamilton County is an aspect of arts sector workforce development we feel is important.

On the Horizon

We have several ideas and opportunities in the works for more arts and creative entrepreneurial training and ways to invest in and support the creative economy in Chattanooga. The arts and cultural sector in Hamilton County supports more than 6,000 full-time equivalent jobs! ArtsBuild wants to do everything we can to ensure our local arts and cultural workforce is strong. ArtsBuild in the Community

ArtsBuild makes it a priority to get out and engage with people at every opportunity we have. We love visiting with folks at festivals, special events, and community centers to share more about ArtsBuild’s mission, programs, and ways to get involved in the arts. We also meet one on one with individuals and groups to talk about potential creative projects and partnerships that could take shape. This past year, ArtsBuild staff set up our table with information and interactive arts and crafts projects at more than 20 public events, engaging with hundreds of Chattanoogans. We also met individually with close to 100 people doing incredible things to build a stronger community through the arts.

Art is for Everyone

One of our engagement events this year took place at the Mary Walker Towers senior apartments on the Southside of town. Councilwoman Raquetta Dotley helped us coordinate the event and 22 residents attended. We offered snacks and an arts activity for the residents while we talked about how ArtsBuild plays a role in supporting the arts in our community.

We also decided to host our annual holiday art supply drive for the Ronald McDonald House of Greater Chattanooga. This organization provides families with the care and resources they need when their child is sick and supports programs and services that directly improve the health and well-being of children. They are furnishing a new art studio at their facility and asked if we could help. We know that having the space and an opportunity to create art can be a great benefit to the families during their stay at the facility.

High School Art Competition is Back

This year ArtsBuild brought back the Hamilton County High School Art Competition after it had been on a short hiatus. The 59 student artwork submissions received were juried by a panel of representatives from ArtsBuild, Stove Works, Hamilton County Schools, and Hamilton County Government. All submissions received are on display on the first floor at the Hamilton County Courthouse. Students from 16 different high schools in Hamilton County and one homeschool student are represented in the exhibit. ArtsBuild staff worked with Stove Works’ teen curators to select the top prizes and curate the show. Entries for the 2023 competition are already coming in!

On the Horizon

After analyzing the reach of ArtsBuild’s financial support over the past several years, we see the need for more connections to Chattanoogans underserved by arts programming and the more rural areas of Hamilton County. We will continue to focus some of our engagement efforts on diversifying our grantee applicant pool and connecting with more artists and groups doing wonderful projects throughout the county.

Kyiv Ballet Comes to Town

ArtsBuild was excited to help be part of the Kyiv City Ballet performance here in Chattanooga with CHA Ballet and UTC. Thanks to the generosity of ArtsBuild donors, we were able to provide 150 free tickets to the performance, which we gave to children and families all over town who might otherwise not have been able to attend.

All About Access

Our grantees who receive Mission Support grants—our nineteen Community Arts Partners—play a tremendous part in infusing the arts into our community for people of all ages and backgrounds. A significant part of the annual grant panel review process is focused on the wonderful outreach of these local arts organizations to underserved audiences; programs and activities that use the arts to promote life-long learning; and educational programs for diverse ages and abilities.

A Diverse Artistic Landscape

This past year, ArtsBuild made more than 50 total grants ranging in size from $500 to $100,000. We are proud to have supported all types of artistic projects, concerts, performances, workshops, and programs through Community Cultural Connections and our other grants programs.

On the Horizon

ArtsBuild recently opened an additional application cycle for Artists Work grants. The Artists Work grant program was initiated in 2020 in response to the sudden loss of audiences, jobs, and patrons experienced by the region’s arts industry due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the goal of providing economic stimulus that benefits both the creative sector and the public realm. Project funding will be awarded to individual artists or groups of artists to produce artworks (visual, fine craft, media, performance, or literary arts) for a public exhibit or performance within Hamilton County.
