little campers
for campers entering grades K-1
Little Campers are one-week camps designed to make our youngest campers feel right at home. Small classes, fabulous teachers, and arts activities based on a new creative theme each week allow for lots of exploration and imaginative play. Camps may include a combination of visual arts, music, movement, and drama, along with games and story times. Morning and afternoon sessions do not repeat content. Lunchtime supervision provided for all campers at no additional charge. Sessions are available 9:00 AM-Noon, 1:00-4:00 PM, or 9:00 AM-4:00 PM (see camp calendar for dates).
Patterns of the world This week we’ll learn how to create and utilize patterns in art. We will explore ways to produce consistent patterns using symbols and stamps. Shapes, colors, and sizes can interact to create unique patterns!
exploring textured art We’ll combine sensory play with artistic concepts to create masterpieces using textured materials. We’ll experiment with salt, sand, paper and more to create art that is soft, spiky, squishy, or sticky!
Inspired by sound This week, we’re going to explore the many ways that art and sound can interact. We’ll design objects that make sound and create works of art that are influenced by the sounds we hear and the way sounds make us feel.
Color: mixing & matching Join us this week as we explore the colors of our world! We’ll learn about making a color wheel, mixing colors, and creating beautiful color schemes. We’ll use a variety of materials to brighten up our summer!

3d art: construction & sculpture We’ll make three-dimensional artwork out of moldable materials like clay or found objects such as recycled goods. Use your imagination to make your art come to life!
art of nature: Plants & animals This week we’ll make art using nature as our inspiration! We will do projects based on plants, animals, and landscapes, and we’ll also incorporate pieces of nature like leaves, rocks, or flowers into our art.
drawing & painting with shapes Shapes are an important building block of art, and this week we’re going to learn all about them! We’ll focus on individual shapes and then use them to piece together larger objects, like people or animals.
Fabric & Fiber art In this session we’ll use fabric and fiber to create wearable art. We’ll try simple sewing, weaving, fabric collage, or felting to develop hand-eye coordination and create projects we’re proud to show off!
Design with paper This week we’ll talk about the many uses of paper that reach far beyond just painting or drawing on it! Layering, tearing, and crumpling our paper will help us create beautiful works of art.
Water based media Join us this week as we explore the ways we can use water to make art. The way that water moves, dries, and is absorbed by different materials will lead us to exciting and creative results!

abstract art For the camper who is ready to loosen up and escape the confines of realistic images! Join us to paint and draw from your imagination. We’ll explore a variety of media in our quest to find a personal language of shapes, lines, symbols, and colors, while taking inspiration from historic trailblazers in abstract art. See specific weeks for age restrictions.
beat making basics (grades 4-6) Unlike traditional music, Beat Making doesn’t require being able to read music or play an instrument. Instead, campers learn the techniques of beat making through composition, sampling, and song writing using just a computer. The results are electronic dance music and hiphop songs, giving every voice a chance to be heard. No experience necessary.

INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT
These are three examples of the dozens of amazing working professional artists teaching ArtsCamp at The ArtsCenter every summer. Read bios of all our instructors at artscenterlive.org/about/instructors.
River Takada-Capel (pictured) was born in Tokyo, Japan and raised in Carrboro, NC. River went to Haywood Community College for Professional Crafts in Textile Fibers, where she learned the many processes of textile design like weaving, screen printing, and hand dyeing with natural dyes, and continued to excel in her life-long passion for sewing. River is the designer and creator behind RIVTAK (www.rivtak.com), a clothing, jewelry, and home goods line made completely of up-cycled materials, vintage and factory remnants. River enjoys sharing techniques on how to upcycle found materials to kids and adults alike. River currently sells at five stores, and prints fabric at Spoonflower in Durham, NC. James Ward was drawn to clay in order to make pots for his many Bonsai trees. Since taking his first wheelthrowing classes years ago, he has been intensely studying pottery techniques and has been an instructor at The ArtsCenter since 2005. Along with taking care of his many trees, James enjoys reclaiming clay scraps and trying to fashion them into functional forms. He throws daily on an old kick wheel that he has in his shed next to his home on the north side of Chapel Hill where he hopes to one day create the perfectly imperfect tea bowl. Juliet Kaplan is an actor with the Transactors Improv Company, the longest running improv company in the south. She is passionate about improvised theatre, and the underlying philosophy and its application to so many aspects of life fascinate her. In addition to acting, she is also a music composer, and holds a Master of Music in composition from the Longy School of Music of Bard College. She is also the Director of Operations for the Walden School’s Young Musician Program, a prestigious summer music camp and festival in New Hampshire, where she works with 9-18 year old musicians.
