instructor spotlight: Richard badu What originally convinced you to study Lindy Hop and swing? I lived in Europe from 1970-1975, playing music for a living. Although I played mostly folk and blues, in my repertoire were a few songs from Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks, which was my introduction to swing music. When I came back to the US, I went to the Berklee College of Music, where I was introduced to swing bands like Count Basie, Chick Webb and Duke Ellington, and jump blues bands like Louis Jordan and Cab Calloway. Then, some original Lindy Hoppers from the Savoy, like Al Minns and Frankie Manning, were rediscovered in the mid-1980s. I met Frankie at a dance weekend in 1987 and spent a week studying with him the following year at a dance camp in West Virginia and I was hooked. Frankie was a mentor and friend for 20 years until he passed away in 2009.

Richard Badu has been teaching swing dance in the Triangle since 1989. For details on his 2020 Winter Quarter classes, see Dance & Movement. Mr. Badu is pictured here with Susan Jean. Photo by Joel Carlin.

Do you find that your teaching has evolved over time? Lindy Hop itself has evolved over the years and so has my teaching. Originally, when Al and Frankie started teaching this new crowd of dancers in the 80s, everyone tried to emulate them. Then, there was a groove period, and then an influence of hip hop into Lindy. Then people backed away from those influences because the dance didn’t look like Lindy any more. Then teachers like myself started making up new vocabulary for Lindy, but kept the flavor of the original dance. Now Lindy has a more stretchy style which my partner, Susan Jean, and I are teaching. I also teach Tai Chi and Susan has a strong background in Pilates and both of our backgrounds inform the way we approach teaching movement.

What words of encouragement would you offer to someone who is curious about trying swing dance for the first time? I’d say, “stick with it!” Often people go to dances and see people dancing and think that they could never learn that. I look at dance like learning a language: in the beginning, you learn some words, then phrases. Then you start making sentences, and after a while you start having conversations between you and your partner and the music and the real fun begins. Also, “take lessons.” It’s not just a shameless plug! You can learn Spanish if you just travel to Mexico, but it could take a while. You can also take lessons once a week. However, you learn to speak a lot faster if you are taking Spanish lessons in Mexico. So, take lessons, then go to the dances often to solidify what you’ve learned, and repeat. This area has a lot of opportunities to dance in clubs to live music and there are weekly DJed dances.
