GENERAL INFORMATION

Spring WorkshoPs

Hello ArtSchool Students!

Workshops are short courses that are designed as an introduction to an artform or an intense focus on a specific aspect of a discipline. Workshops are structured to make it easier for you to take time to create, and are suitable for artists of all skill levels! A list of all our workshop offerings for the 2019 Spring Quarter is below, and more information can be found online by visiting artscenterlive.org/artschool.

Welcome to our first official Spring Quarter! As you may recall, we have shifted from a trimester schedule to a quarterly one. This is to allow us to be more flexible in our offerings to you, as well as to the busy and varied schedules of our instructors. Speaking of instructors, we have a few new ones joining us this Spring to offer a handful of new classes: Jonathan Davis will be teaching Introduction to Glassblowing & Flameworking out of his studio in Pittsboro, NC, hopefully the first of many blown glass classes that we will be offering; Teresa Pietsch will be running a one-day ceramics workshop Slipping Paper to Pots where students will learn how to transfer drawings and renderings from a flat surface to a three dimensional one; and Ely Urbanski (our Nicholson Gallery artist for April) will expound her process in Introduction to Printmaking. Of course, many of our long-time instructors are returning to teach the subjects that they know and love. There’s something for everyone at The ArtsCenter and I look forward to seeing you here this quarter!

Artist portrait by Craig Witter

Ely Urbanski was born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil. Her father was a photographer and her mother a dressmaker, influences which can be seen in her works. Ely studied Art at the University of São Paulo, where she she studied with printmaker Evandro Carlos Jardim and received training in traditional printmaking techniques such as etching, mezzotint, woodblock and lithograph. From 1993-1995 she lived in Tokyo. Returning to São Paulo she worked on fabric, using sewing and drawing as an attempt to add trip memories and experiences to her prints. From 2005-2011 she lived in Suzuka, Japan, where she developed a series of prints that use articles of clothing as matrices. Because of the lack of equipment, she used her own weight as the pressing instrument.

The ArtsCenter offers a limited number of scholarships for ArtSchool classes every semester. Scholarship applications can be found at the bottom of artscenterlive.org/artschool by clicking on the Scholarships tab, or picked up in person from the front desk. Scholarships are considered by financial need on a first come, first served basis.

In 2013 she arrived in North Carolina and since then she has been developing her art in Snow Camp and Siler City, NC. She continues to develop her project involving clothes, now adding natural dyes to the work process to avoid the use of harmful materials. Most clothes are donations from friends or exhibition visitors. Some donors participate in video recordings where they talk about the stories behind the donated clothes. Interacting with the community has been an important part of her creative process. She is one of the recipients of the 2018 Regional Artists Project Grant – Central Piedmont Regional Artist Hub Program, with support of the North Carolina Arts Council and partnering art councils.
