Luna Lee Ray is a Carrboro artist working in acrylic-based mixed media, currently creating images inspired by air and water, reflections and light. She shows her work locally at Frank Gallery in Chapel Hill, where she is also lead curator. She has been an instructor of watercolor, acrylic, and mixed media at The ArtsCenter since 2001. Workshops are short courses designed as an introduction to an art form. They are also suitable for more experienced artists looking to refresh the basics, or to have a fun, art-filled night or weekend!
scrapbooking your child’s artwork Time to retire that art hanging on the fridge, but not sure where to put it? Learn simple bookmaking techniques to make a scrapbook with recycled materials. Leave with a finished product and the skills to make another one at home! Stained Glass Crash Course In a relaxed and casual atmosphere at the artist’s studio in Mebane, overcome the intimidation of breaking glass with your bare hands (and a few handy tools). Adobe Illustrator’s Magic Meshes Illustrator has gradient, distortion, linear, radial, and freestyle meshes. These provide powerful capabilities, helping artists to create vector-based images that rival photographs for smooth gradient fills and natural-looking fold patterns while sidestepping the pixelation that inevitably occurs when enlarging images. writing your artist’s (Financial) statement - Taxation Tax-time - It’s everyone’s least favorite time of year, but it shouldn’t be a surprise, and if you are prepared it doesn’t have to be stressful. This class will cover the basics of which business returns you should watch out for as well as how that self-employment income will show up on your personal return. Ceramics tuitions include one bag of clay and studio fees, unless otherwise noted. Extra clay can be purchased for $20. Students may attend Open Studio for two weeks after class ends to finish work.
Simple Surfaces: Exploring Basic Surface Decoration Whether you love or hate glazing, this class will help broaden your surface decoration skills. After throwing basic forms we will experiment with several surface decoration techniques including incising, chattering, slip trailing, sgraffito, underglaze, resists, stamping, and oxide washes. Anatomy for the Artist II: Ecorche Sculpture Using an oil-based clay on a wire armature, students will develop a sculpture of an idealized male or female. Learn how underlying musculo-skeletal structures articulate and affect gesture and movement. There will be a model present for a few sessions, and students are encouraged to develop anatomical sketches to aid in the development of their sculptures. The instructor will provide demonstrations, group lectures, and individualized help to resolve visual cues from the model and their relationship to your sculpture. dance Lindy Tuesdays with Richard Badu Lindy Hop is an energetic form of partnered swing dancing that began in Harlem in the late 1920s, and continues to thrive today! It takes a bit longer to get started as the basics are technically more difficult, but the result is worth it as this dance has many fun variations! Lindy classes take place every Tuesday of the month, unless otherwise noted. Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced level classes take place at 6:15pm, 7:15pm, and 8:15pm, respectively. Swing, Blues, & Charleston Wednesdays with Richard Badu East Coast Swing is the most popular swing dance in the area, and the easiest one to learn. Originally danced to Rock & Roll, and Rhythm & Blues in the 1950’s, this style can be danced to many different kinds of music. Learn Front and Tandem Charleston Variations and add them to your Lindy repetoire or East Coast Swing! For down and dirty, or just when the tempos get slow, Blues is the dance to get in the groove! Tap Dance Everyone has rhthym, and this class will help you find it! This class will explore the foundational movements of tap as well as putting those movements to music. Through fun excersise we will build a solid tap vocabulary for future classes, or just for your own dancing! This class is strictly for fun exercise. Drawing the Portrait Learn how to employ basic anatomy and observational skills in rendering a portrait. First we’ll focus on the basic structures of the head like eyes, ears, mouth, and nose. Beginning Metalsmithing: The First Step is a pre-req for most jewelry courses. Attendance to the first class is required for all courses, and all classes are 18+.
mASTER cLASS W/ tIMOTHY lAZURE: rINGS 360° This class will explore jewelry design, fabrication, basic stone setting, and assembling techniques that are related to the ring concept. We will fashion rings of personal importance, expression, and adornment. The class will center around lecture and demonstration with plenty of time for individual attention. We will attempt to create rings that are unpredictable, honest, visually complex, bold, confident, simple and beautiful. Beg. Metalsmithing: Cold Connections - Tabs In this class we will make a copper and/or brass bracelet using tabs as the connections between multiple components. We will explore several different tabs and also make a simple catch. Continuing Metalsmithing: Metal Clay basics Metal clay is pure metal suspended in a binder. It works very much like ceramic clay. Students will explore bronze metal clay, making sculptural jewelry pieces beginning with a pendant or earrings. Cont. Metalsmithing: Exploring Rings/Using Argentium In this class we will advance our torch control skills by soldering and fusing ring bands together to create two rings. Careful measuring and torch control are important techniques learned in this class so The First Step and Torch Control are both pre-requisites.
