Weekend Workshops
Workshops are short courses designed for beginners as an introduction to an art form. They are also suitable for more experienced artists looking to refresh the basics, or to just have a fun art-filled weekend!
Intuitive Painting This unique approach is about letting go of expectations, experimenting, and allowing your creativity to unfold naturally. Working in a non-judgemental and playful environment, students will focus on personal expression and their own creative journey. They will learn to connect more authentically with themselves, as well as reconnect with the present moment through creative expression. Stained Glass Crash Course This one-day workshop is for beginners and those who may need a quick refresher. We will cover the basics of the Tiffany method, including glass cutting, grinding, foiling and soldering. Students will complete a free-form suncatcher from a variety of patterns and glass combinations and will leave prepared for the next level of instruction. This is a fun and fast-paced day with a 30 minute break for lunch. weekend Workshops drawing and design crash course Develop your observational abilities, personal style, and rendering skills in this introduction to the principles of drawing and two-dimensional design. We will explore different ways of seeing and looking at objects in order to render them in 2D form through using pencil, charcoal, ink, collage, and other media. We will also take a multidisciplinary approach to developing a personal style through quick sketches, writing, and technical rendering. We will work with the still life and in abstract form. Most importantly, you will learn how drawing can be a relaxing and fun tool for self expression that is approachable for all! Manual Exposure Photography Do you have a digital SLR and want to move beyond photographing in an automatic or semi-automatic mode, like ‘P’ or aperture priority? You’re a lot smarter than your camera, and with a little guidance you can lead it to an exposure that you like more than what it might come up with on its own. Spring Photography Take this small-group workshop to briefly review photographic technique, composition, lighting and then shoot! Encaustic is an intoxicating beeswax-based medium that smells like honey and falls somewhere between painting and sculpture. Weekend workshops Getting to know the Jewelry Studio: Torch control Are you interested in what the Jewelry Studio at the ArtCenter has to offer? Join us for this one day workshop where you will be introduced to the Jewelry Studio and learn to use the jewelry torches, and jewelers saws and files, making a simple silver ring. Susan Walser- $72 - Saturday, 10am-4pm, Jan. 21 A studio fee of $7 plus an additional fee for the ring material (between $3 to $15), based upon current market prices of metals is due to the instructor at the beginning of class.
Beginning Metalsmithing: The First Step In this class, students will learn basic techniques and tool care, and projects will start with metal preparation, design layout and sawing. A copper or brass pierced pendant, earrings or key chain will be made. Chrissy Jahnes - $108 - Saturday & Sunday, 10am-4pm, Apr. 8 & 9 A studio fee of $12 and a $8-$20 materials fee, based upon current market prices of metals, is due to the instructor at the beginning of class.
Metal Clay basics: Bronze Beginnings Metal clay is pure metal suspended in a binder. It works very much like ceramic clay. When fired in the kiln, the binder burns out and pure metal remains. Students will first explore bronze metal clay, making sculptural jewelry pieces, beginning with a pendant or earrings. Silver metal clay will be demonstrated and available for purchase after the first class. Sterling wire and cubic zirconias will also be available for purchase. Metal clay tool kits are provided for use during class. Susan Walser- $108 - Saturday & Sunday, 10am-4pm, May 20 & 21 A studio fee of $10 and a materials fee, which can range between $20-$100 based upon current market prices and which metal is desired, is due to the instructor at the beginning of class.

All ceramics class tuitions include one bag of clay and studio fees, unless otherwise noted. Additional bags of clay can be purchased for $20. Students can attend the Ceramics Open Studio up to two weeks after thier class ends to complete their projects.
BEGINNING WHEELTHROWING Newcomers to the wheel will learn to center clay and throw basic cylindrical forms and bowls. All students will learn how to glaze or decorate their finished work. Exploring Texture in Pottery Students will explore different texturing techinques for functional, thrown pots. Thes techniques will alter and manipulate the surface, and occassionally shape the work. Throw, Set, Match! throwing a Set of Functional Pots In this course we will focus on creating a set of functional pottery. Depending on your skill level, this may be a set of cups, bowls, mugs, or plates. Master Class with Ronan Peterson: Peeling the Onion Offered in collaboration with Chapel Hill Parks & Recreation
‌Without all the tears! We will focus on creating dynamic, layered, and interesting ceramic surfaces for both functional and sculptural vessels. We will look at building up slip and terra sigilatta surfaces and backgrounds to enhance and enliven the ceramic surface and provide dynamic, layered backgrounds for glazes to interact with. We will look at brushing slip, hakame, paper resist, brush wipes, sgraffito, champleve, slip trailing, terra sigillatas, and different resist techniques to build up layers of information and interest for further glazing to later enhance and augment our ceramic vessels. Sculpture 101 - (At the artist’s studio) This class is for emerging sculptors (beginners) as well as for those who already have some experience. We will learn the techniques of making armatures and modeling in clay as well as making plaster molds. We will create high-relief clay portraits and clay masks, both realistic and abstract. dance Lindy Tuesdays with Richard Badu Lindy Hop is an energetic form of partnered swing dancing that began in Harlem in the late 1920’s and continues to thrive today! It takes a bit longer to get started as the basics are technically more difficult, but the result is worth it as this dance has many fun variations! dance Swing, Blues, & Charleston Wednesdays with Richard Badu East Coast Swing is the most popular swing dance in the area, and the easiest one to learn. We recommend this if this is your first partner dance. For down and dirty, or just when the tempos get slow, Blues is the dance to get in the groove! Everyone has rhthym, and this class will help you find it! This class will explore the foundationl movements of tap as well as putting those movements to music. Through fun excersise we will build a solid tap vocabulary for future classes, or just for your own dancing!

Anatomy for the artist i This is a drawing course dedicated to studying the nude in all its anatomical splendor! Students will draw from the model while receiving personalized instruction on landmark forms of the skeletal and muscular systems. Learn how these underlying structures articulate and affect gesture and movement. Through drawing overlays onto Old Master drawings we will identify the deep structures for a more complete understanding of form and movement. We will tackle everything from how to read yarn labels and understand gauge to reading crochet patterns and charts. Fabric & Fiber Arts Beginning Sewing In this course, we will work on what’s possible with the beginning skills of sewing, including straight line stitching, working with woven fabric, installing zippers, and making accessories or simple garments. We will learn how to use essential equipment, and students will have at least three pieces to take home, as well as a resource list for how to continue sewing at home! Mending & altering remake clothing Attack your mending stash! Film & Photography
The Photogram The camera-less process of creating a photographic image is the process that created some of the first photographic images ever made. These cameraless photograms are made by placing objects on photosensitive material, then exposing this combination of objects and material to light. Make a Documentary in 7 weeks This course teaches the basics of documentary video production. Students will learn use HD cameras, tripods, professional lights, and audio equipment. They will also learn basic shot composition and digital editing techniques using Final Cut Pro. Throughout the course, students will pick a subject or issue to focus on and produce a short documentary that will premiere on The People’s Channel, Chapel Hill/Carrboro’s public access television station. Photoshop for photographers Are you a photographer who wants to use Adobe Photoshop to edit pictures? The Deeper Meaning of Photographs Students will explore the deeper meaning of the photographs that they take. Tiffany Method Windows and Transoms Beginners will learn glass cutting basics and the terms and techniques of stained glass using the Tiffany (copper foil) method. Master class with tricia weiner: Bezel Basics Are you interested in learning how to add gemstones into your jewelry creations? Register for this one day bezel setting workshop where you create one finished piece of your choice with a bezel set cabochon gemstone. You will learn the basics of forming a fine silver bezel around a gem, finishing and fitting it properly, and using this bezel to finish a design of your choice. Theatre Scene Study This is a scene study course designed for actors who have experience acting, or who have begun to develop their craft. It is an acting class for those interested in fundamental techniques for theatre and film. The course will use scene study and improvisations as a foundation to explore truthful behavior on the stage, build relationships, trust instincts, create emotional connections, and further character development. Text analysis will be explored as a basis for making strong effective choices grounded in the text, while creating a role. Scenes will be chosen week two that both suit and challenge the actor. Students will dig into a step-by-step process influenced by the acting methods of Constantin Stanislavski, Sanford Meisner, Uta Hagen, among others. Students will have the opportunity to perform their final scenes in front of an invited audience. Local theatre professionals will also be invited. Life Drawing Studio This is an informal weekly session geared for individual development in drawing with nude models. No instructor is provided, although there will be a moderator present to provide direction to the models. Parent & Child Classes Family Writing Adventure Susie Wilde leads families on an exploration of children’s books and writing as she guides them in wondering their way to a whimsical story. This course includes the basics of writing—the first class will focus on structuring an imaginative story and the second class will reveal style elements to make stories sparkle. Within these classes we’ll create a collaborative story that will serve as an example to inspire family writing. Artsploration: Creative Play for Babies & Toddlers Come make art with your little one and meet other parents/caregivers in a safe and friendly environment. This 6 week class will inspire discovery, learning, and promote visual and sensory skills for your child. Minicamps & Summer Camp
MiniCamps MiniCamps are arts workshops held on CHCCS teacher workdays and select holidays. Half-day and full-day programs are available. Each MiniCamp features classes with four professional teaching artists and a variety of art forms. Upcoming projects and themes include Handbuilding, Hip Hop Dance, Drawing Techniques, Improv Theatre, and more. Reserve your spaces early – register online!

We offer both visual and performing art camps every week of summer vacation. Registration opens on January 30 for ArtsCenter Family Friends and February 13 for the general public.

Youth Arts classes Painting & Drawing Techniques (grades K-2) Whether your child is a practiced artist or is picking up a pencil or brush for the first time, this class is a great opportunity to develop new skills. Students will explore colors, shapes, lines, and techniques as they experiment with a variety of materials that may include colored pencil, charcoal, acrylic paint, and watercolors. All materials will be provided – please provide a smock or old t-shirt for your artist if you’d like. Pottery: Handbuilding & Wheelthrowing Techniques These courses will explore the creative possibilities of clay through handbuilding techniques and creating both functional and decorative pieces. Meet The Cover artist
Ronan Kyle Peterson grew up in Poplar, NC, a small community deep in the mountains of western North Carolina. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and in 1996 received a Bachelor of the Arts degree in Anthropology, with a minor in Folklore. He was a Core Fellow at Penland School of Crafts in 2000-2001, and has returned to Penland to teach Summer Session workshops. Currently, Ronan maintains Nine Toes Pottery, which produces highly decorative and functional earthenware vessels. Recent exhibitons include solo shows at the Cedar Creek Gallery (NC) and Charlie Cummings Gallery (FL) and invitational shows at the Artisan Gallery in Northampton, MA, Worcester Center for Crafts in Worcester, MA, and the Carbondale Clay Center in Carbondale, CO. Ronan will be teaching “Master Class With Ronan Peterson: Peeling the Onion� (pg. 11)
