The intersection of culture, individuality and community is the focal point for Cora Edmonds’ vision. The community can be a village high in the Himalayas, a crowded market in Cairo, an artist forum in Hanoi or in her own Seattle neighborhood. Her photographs are windows into the interconnectedness of individuals and the cultures in which we live, no matter how diverse. Cora’s prime focus is the face of her neighbor, for that is how she relates to people. “I look for the story behind the image,” she continues. “I want to impart that story to my community and widen the circle that unites us through our shared humanity.” Born in Hong Kong and raised in America, Cora embraces her multicultural identity by exploring and supporting communities around the world. Inspired by the connections she made while traveling, she created ArtXchange Gallery in 1995. Dedicated to cultural exchange through art and photography, ArtXchange Gallery has evolved into a contemporary international art gallery and community resource in Seattle’s historical Pioneer Square district. In 2008, Cora Edmonds and Phil Crean founded the Namaste Children’s Fund. Its mission is to support the education of children in the rural areas of Nepal which Cora first photographed a decade earlier. 15% of the proceeds from all Cora’s photography benefits the Namaste Children’s Fund.
