Firstly, we are welcoming Alex Butler to the Fisher team. Taking on the role of General Assistant, Alex brings a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience surrounding theatre and the arts, so we are really excited to have him

We even have some half term activities for you and your children; we are working with Sustainable Bungay to bring children closer to the environment, and returning for half term fun are the fabulous Foolhardy Circus Troop here to teach us and perform their mystical array of circus skills. We’ve even got some comedy and variety in there for you too, with a Murder Mystery evening, a Ventriloquist impressionist, some stand-up comedy and improvisation. Lastly, I personally would like to say a massive thank you to all of our amazing volunteers, whom we would not survive without. Stage Fright! An interactive murder mystery Presented by To Die for Events Saturday 14th January, 6.30pm • £12 per person

Please note that capacity for this event is limited to ten teams of eight people. The Fisher Theatre has become the scene of a gruesome murder when Harry Armpits, a leading actor with the Bungay Amateur Dramatic Actors was found dead just before the opening night of their performance of “The Greatest Showman”. He had been due to play the part of Philip Carlyle. Your task as a detective is to interview the suspects and examine the crime scene for clues to solve the murder.

A modern Mexican classic of magic realism provides the basis for The Royal Ballet’s new full-length work, reuniting Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon with the creative team who transformed Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and The Winter’s Tale into dance, composer Joby Talbot and designer Bob Crowley. The ballet is inspired by Laura Esquivel’s novel – a captivating family saga where the central character’s emotions spill out through cooking to influence everyone around her in startling and dramatic ways. The John Ward Trio celebrate John’s acclaimed folk songs, drawing on his life on the Suffolk coast and his wider travels in the world. This 2022 epic, big-screen spectacle from Warner Bros Pictures and visionary, Oscarnominated filmmaker Baz Luhrmann explores the life and music of Elvis Presley, starring Austin Butler and Oscar winner Tom Hanks. Elvis’ story is seen through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Spanning over 20 years, the film follows Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America. Eric Ravilious Drawn to War (PG) Presented by Bungay Film Club Tuesday 24th January, 7.30pm • £5 & £2.50 (Bungay Film Club members)

An exciting opportunity to see this highlypraised documentary about Eric Ravilious, the painter, designer and print-maker best known for his work as a war artist during WWII. Drawing on previously unseen correspondence between Ravilious and his wife (voiced by Tamsin Greig and Freddie Fox), with contributions from friends, family and admirers such as Alan Bennett, Grayson Perry, Robert Macfarlane and Ai Weiwei, the film paints an affectionate portrait of the artist who died prematurely in an air crash in 1942. A witch hunt is beginning in Arthur Miller’s captivating parable of power with Erin Doherty (The Crown) and Brendan Cowell (Yerma). Raised to be seen but not heard, a group of young women in Salem suddenly find their words have an almighty power. As a climate of fear, vendetta and accusation spreads through the community, no one is safe from trial. Lyndsey Turner (Hamlet) directs this contemporary new staging, designed by Tony Award-winner Es Devlin (The Lehman Trilogy). Captured live from the Olivier stage at the National Theatre.

‘Song Sung Blue’ is a show which pays tribute to the music and career of Neil Diamond, paying homage to his vocal range, guitar playing and heartfelt stage presence in a show, jam-packed with timeless songs and ballads from Diamond’s solo releases and as a songwriter for some of the world’s biggest artists and groups. Well-known local pianist William Ferguson and double bass player Vilem Hais will be providing the music for our Burns Night Ceilidh. Come and dance to this dynamic duo playing traditional jigs and reels, airs and marches from Scotland and other corners of the UK. The Mark Wade trio featuring Marco Marconi Critically acclaimed New York bassist/composer Mark Wade makes his debut appearance at the Fisher Theatre featuring the dynamic London based pianist Marco Marconi. Voted one of the top bassists of the year in five of the last six years by the prestigious Downbeat Magazine Readers’ Poll, Wade performs with a musical virtuosity that has led him to be named “one of the pre-eminent musicians of his generation” by UK Vibe. Wade will be joined by tour de force pianist Marco Marconi and drummer Joel Barford, both fixtures of the London jazz scene.

We welcome new members to the Fisher Theatre. Our lottery has been running for several years and helps support The Fisher Theatre’s charity (in the name The Bungay Arts & Theatre Society) as a regular fundraiser. We thank those who currently engage with our lottery and welcome new members. Entry is £2.50 per ball each month, paid by direct debit. You can purchase up to 4 balls to be entered into the monthly draw. The prize each month is £250 and the odds are very appealing!

Volunteering

We are always looking for volunteers to join our team! The Fisher Theatre offers a unique opportunity to be ‘hands-on’ involved with the running of the theatre and in many areas that include: Box Office, Front of House, Bar and Café, Ushering, Technical Support and Trusteeship. Training is provided in all areas, and many of our volunteers come in and shadow others until they are confident with any task or duty. There is ongoing support, training opportunities and many benefits to being involved with our very sociable community.

Kerry Timewell, Polly Dunbar & Marie Van Berkel: The Illustrators Eye Running until 19th January East Anglia is becoming something of an epicentre for illustrators, illustrative artists and authors and the Fisher Theatre, having hosted two events in recent years, ‘Bewitched’ (2019), an exhibition of Children’s Book Art, and ‘The Dog Eared Festival’ (2022), with its talks and demonstrations about children’s book illustration, has been particularly closely involved in this process. Now, two of the illustrators who appeared in ‘Bewitched’ are back here again for this Christmas show - Polly Dunbar and Kerry Timewell – and are joined by a new name, Marie Van Berkel, from Norwich. They are all illustrative artists in their own right using printmaking and painting to create original dreamscape scenes. Between them they have created a wonderfully wide-ranging and hugely enjoyable show, perfect for the Christmas season, full of the rich imagination and visual wit of these three, hugely distinguished, artists.

Darren McMorran: Experiencing the Human 5th February – 30th March With their brightly coloured dots, swirling patterns, thick stripes, pencil scribbles and cracked paint, Darren McMorran’s exuberant and exhilarating abstract paintings are, as he himself says, “not about literal observations but experiences as I have remembered them. I paint the range and flux of human experience as I recall it because I want an intense and personal relationship with my work. Through memories I can express human experience via my own perceptions – absorbed, filtered and rearranged.” The outcomes are unashamedly colourful and textural, drawing the viewer closer into them, inviting them to be inquisitive and engage in a personal conversation with the subjects of his work. “I live in Suffolk and my everyday experiences with the people of East Anglia are a constant inspiration.”

Claudia studied Opera at the Conservatory of Naples and has sung extensively in Italy and the UK. She now lives in Bungay and works extensively with locally based artists. A collection of stories with the theme of wartime memory. In 3rd September Dorothy, an evacuee, remembers her time away from home during the ‘Phoney War’ and how her life changed forever. The Very Thought of You transports us to the seaside and an unrequited love story that began in 1942. Late Closing tells the story of a veteran rear gunner’s flight over Germany. Local writers, Victoria Panton Bacon and William Drew-Batty join with a cast of local actors to bring you an evening of storytelling that promises to be funny, sad and poignant. 28

Bungay Film Club is run by a small group of volunteers with an enthusiasm for cinema. The aims of the club are to bring films to the big screen in Bungay and to support the Fisher Theatre. The film club has been screening films at the theatre since 2009 and currently offers a selection of recent releases alongside the occasional classic movie or documentary. On Tuesday 24 January, the film club will be showing the well-received documentary, ERIC RAVILIOUS – DRAWN TO WAR, about the British war artist, painter and designer who died in 1942. This season, the Fisher Theatre will be also be programming a few carefully selected lunchtime matinees on Mondays after Meet Up Mondays. Screenings are designed to be dementia friendly and suitable for all ages. Please see the centre pages of the brochure for information about forthcoming attractions. Films shown at the theatre are open to all, but subscribers to the film club benefit from halfprice tickets for all films, and reduced admission to live and encore screenings of performances streamed from the National Theatre, the Royal Opera House and other leading venues. If there is any break in transmission, which causes a termination for the evening, two additional screenings will take place to which you will be invited to attend. No refund will be available.
