PEMBROKESHIRE PAINTERS of The Best Artists Capturing This Magical Landscape & Coast

Pembrokeshire has long inspired all who live and visit here.

With its epic coastline and blue flag beaches as well as bountiful countryside, it’s no wonder it’s a haven for artists.

For our latest edition we’ve curated nine of the very best artists who capture this magical area in their

Elizabeth Haines has worked in the studio on her Pembrokeshire hill farm for over 50 years.

She originally trained as an illustrator, but has gradually evolved a more flexible and imaginative way of working, an oblique and poetic evocation of landscape and the natural world. Her paintings, often based on the landscape of Preseli, are characterised by rich colour and a sense of inner light.

Elizabeth’s work is in several public collections including the National Library of Wales, and she has a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Wales. She also runs workshops at her studio.

Kathy began painting seriously from the age of 15, copying German Expressionist paintings, before finding her own style. She trained in Art & Design and Education and first came to Pembrokeshire in 1978 to visit the Graham Sutherland collection at Picton Castle. She fell in love with the landscape of the St. David’s peninsula and returned for many holidays.

She came to live in North Pembrokeshire in 2017 and her studio looks out on the Preseli Hills. Kathy works mainly in oils in a semi-abstract style, inspired by estuary, mountain, and coast. She is a committee member for North Pembrokeshire Open Studios.

Morgan Art

@Peter Morgan Art email: peter.morgan02@btinternet.com www.petermorganart.co.uk

Peter Morgan is particularly well known for his colourful palette. Working mainly with a pallet knife, he applies the acrylic paint to the canvas mixing to achieve an impasto texture.

Painting buildings within the landscape has always been at the heart of his paintings. He works directly from the countryside, often revisiting places in all weathers and seasons.

“My work has become a direct response to the ever-changing light, often changing with the weather. Changing my palette with mood and nature from the black and brown hues of winter to the yellows and ochre of autumn”

Pembrokeshire born contemporary painter Delyth Williams works out of her studio in Newport, Pembrokeshire and opens her home up once a year for the ‘North Pembrokeshire Open Studios’ as well as creative collaborations and exhibitions across the UK.

Growing up on the Pembrokeshire coastline, it's no surprise that the sea's influence can be felt in every brushstroke, line and colour choice.

Delyth manages to capture the raw emotion of the sea and sky, translating it into a visual play of abstract shapes and vibrant colours. Experimenting with colour palettes, transparencies and opacities and varying ways of applying paint to create something new and unexpected.

Jill Jones Fine Art

Of all the current Pembrokeshire artists, Jill Jones FRSA, is certainly one to watch and invest in! Painting from her National Park-based studio, which also stocks a range of originals and prints available to buy off the wall, she captures the magic of west Wales beautifully and dramatically in either oils or acrylics.

Jill supplies galleries across Wales and also in England, and also sells many originals online via her own web site, www.jilljones.co.uk

Her love of Wales is evident in her work, which features glorious huge skies, gentle moonlit scenes and wild images of the unspoilt Welsh countryside. The growing popularity of Jill’s work can be seen on her website, by the significant number of ‘sold’ works shown, and by the number of collectors who return to the various galleries Jill is featured in to purchase further pieces.

Working in, with and from elements in the landscape my work echoes the colours, light and forms of the natural world with an emphasis on movement, mood and transience. Using paint, ink or clay, my process is largely intuitive. Serendipity plays a part, but observations in the landscape and more conscious decisions as to what is added and what remains are essential to the final image or object. The aim is to engage the viewer in a moment of quiet distraction, pleasure or recollection.

With a current exhibition at Oriel Q Narberth, work can also be found at The Gallery Yr Oriel Newport Pembs and The Waterfront Gallery, Milford Haven.

The textures and colours of collected stones, pebbles and rock formations inform my current work. Using traditional hand building techniques and a variety of clays I construct complementary ranges of tactile vessels whose surfaces reflect the smooth and the weatherworn. Experimental use of slips and glazes create finishes that range from highly polished to cracked and crazed. The unpredictability of smoke firing, obvara and horsehair raku are used for their ability to give subtle and unique markings.

After a number of productive years as a young sculptor, life diverted me onto a different course, but I am finally back where I belong, hammer and chisel in hand. Sculpting feels as natural as breathing to me, and is the best way I can converse with the world.

Dawn Harries Art

Dawn Harries is a Welsh Contemporary Landscape Painter, using the natural beauty of the British countryside as her inspiration, especially the rolling hills and rugged coastline of Wales.

Dawn uses the effects of colour and contrast in her paintings to capture the character and atmosphere of the landscape, bringing a sense of place, warmth and familiarity into your home.

The International Welsh Rarebit Centre is the beautiful setting for Dawn’s latest solo exhibition, with around 30 paintings on show, capturing a variety of landscapes and seascapes in an impressionistic style.

An exhibition not to be missed !
