Performance The practice and performance of traditional art forms, classical music and dance, are embedded in our rich local culture. In 2017 we present a performing arts program that embraces this history and laces it together with new work and genres, painting a true reflection of the inner east’s creative state today. From the classical to the contemporary, the next twelve months is about reacquainting ourselves with the known and diverging into the new and unexplored.

Josh Cashman
10 February 8pm Kew Court House All tickets $25
Every now and then, a local musician emerges who has an undeniable, palpable and infectious momentum. Hailing from Gippsland in country Victoria, Josh gave up a promising football career to pursue his real passion– music. Humble by nature, he began posting low-fi Facebook videos, skillfully interweaving layers of electronic textures and sublime loops with his acoustic folk originals. Word spread quickly, which saw the unassuming videos often reach thousands of views in 24 hours.
The stained glass prism that is Kew Court House opens for just a few to be able to hang off every note, loop and lyric. This is one of those shows that you’ll be thankful you saw, of a new generation artist unlikely to play anywhere so small again.

Mansionair and playing boutique festivals The Hills Are Alive and Paradise Music Festival.
Hawthorn Arts Centre
The multi-instrumentalist studied jazz guitar at the prestigious Victorian College of the Arts before immersing himself in hookdriven electronic and pop music. As well as his intricate, layered guitar work, he’s renowned for his elegant, soaring falsetto which draws comparisons to Thom Yorke and Jeff Buckley.
In unusual style, LANKS’ songs evoke folk storytelling within the framework of electronic music. Playing to the ethereal acoustic quality of Hawthorn Arts Centre’s Main Hall the songs will trail a natural narrative. The drifting between tales of vengeful samurais, desert bandits and the lonely deep sea, to the suburban mundane, lost love and daydreams of paradise.

Being and Time
29–31 March 7.30pm Hawthorn Arts Centre Presented in partnership with Melbourne Ballet Company $40 Tickets $34 Concession $29 Under 16
Melbourne Ballet Company’s Being and Time reflects existentialism: the belief that philosophical thinking begins with and reflects its human subjects in their acting, feeling and as recognisable living human individuals. Both choreographers and dancers can be seen to research and depict the primary virtue of existentialism: that of authenticity. The artists are exploring themselves as individuals, analysing their personal behaviour and emotions in front of the surrounding reality. Investigating the world through dance and philosophy via a purely existentialist lens, this
brand new work promises to be a thrilling creative development that questions our very existence. Choreographed by Melbourne Ballet Company Director and Resident Choreographer Simon Hoy (Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet New York, Carolina Ballet, Ballet Mainz Germany), Lucas Jervies (Australian Ballet, Scapino Ballet, Sydney Dance Company) and internationally acclaimed dance maker Tim Podesta.

A Tribute to Marika Ninou
6 May 8pm Kew Court House All tickets $25
Arguably one of the most recognisable voices to come out of Greece, Marika Ninou not only touched the souls of post war Greece, she paved the way for a generation taking music to the world. Marika was one of the leading Greek vocalists during the early-’50s. Her 78 rpm recordings provided a voice for the compositions of Vasilis Tsitsanis, Manolis Hiotis, Yannis Papaioanou, Giorgos Mitsakis, and Apostolas Kaldaras. A native of Causasus, Ninou came to Athens in 1948, performing an acrobatic act with her husband and son. Her vocal talents soon
attracted attention–as she was invited to sing with Stellakis Perpiniadis at the Florida club in Alexandria. She followed this stint with a series of performances with legendary composer Vassilis Tsitsanis, who remained her accompanist for the remainder of her career. Performing her debut concerts in the United States with Kostas Kaplanis in 1955, Ninou began to suffer from cancer. She died the following year. Renowned Melbourne-based Rebetiko artists, Con Kalamaras and friends share this heartfelt honour to one of Greece’s greatest musicians.

FourPlay String Quartet
30 June 8pm Hawthorn Arts Centre $40 Tickets $34 Concession
Originally made up of friends from the Australian Youth Orchestra, FourPlay started life as a classical string quartet. They began playing rock covers for friends inspired by the Kronos, Balanescu and Brodsky Quartets’ blurring the boundaries between classical and rock music. FourPlay use two violas as opposed to two violins (as a traditional string quartet would use) to produce a thicker, deeper sound. The ensemble’s live shows are unlike any other string quartet in the world. The energy and sound created is more
like that of a rock band, as is their on-stage presentation and banter. A FourPlay gig is an affair not to be missed. FourPlay’s repertoire includes covers of diverse artists such as the Beastie Boys, Jeff Buckley, Depeche Mode, Charles Mingus, Radiohead and The Strokes, and their own originals, inspired by wide array of diverse music such as rock, dub, folk, gypsy, klezmer, electronica, post-rock, jazz and improv.

Archer
1 July 8pm Kew Court House $28 Tickets $23 Concession
Archer sings the great lost folk songs of Australia. Archer is an old time sing-song man. He works the fruit picking rounds, sits under the sky a lot and drives a car if he has to. He’s earned his singing spirit with his many hours of being out with the country and getting it under his skin the only real way you can. Archer’s longtime wanders, his longtime bush dreams and his deep and patient listening also allow him to coax the hidden old folk songs of this country to creep out of their holes and
dusty old wardrobes, to fall from the branches until he hears them. You probably haven’t heard these songs before, the forgotten stories by the forgotten writers of the wayback. In 2016 he toured Canada playing Ottawa Bluesfest, Montreal International Jazz Festival and Quebec’s Festival d’Ete. He has also supported major touring acts including Pokey Le Farge, Justin Townes Earles, Calexico, CW Stoneking and the Cat Empire.

Iaki Vallejo is a Colombian singer who is based in Melbourne. She grew up in an environment where loud music and dance never seemed to ever despair it occupants. Iaki marries Colombian, South American and African rhythms together, creating an international sound which blends funk, jazz, and Latin styles–horns, bass, and guitars with tambora, marimba, conunos, kalimba (traditional percussion) and melodies. Iaki’s ambition is to blend these energetic forms, cultures and traditions together, in order to popularise the roots of her musical formation whilst creating a new
exciting sound. She realised that this can only be achieved through the convergence of musicians from different parts of the word, such as Colombia, Chile, Cuba, Greece, USA, Africa and Australia. “Above all, the excitements I feel when I see happy faces, forgetting their loads of sorrows where they buried them, and smiling at me when they hear me sing cannot be overemphasised. Working together here for the first time, this is the debut performance of a collaborative original work by two highly regarded, fascinating and famously hard to pin down young musicians. Both are gifted composers and singers and despite their different musical pathways; Hue coming largely from a jazz base whilst Oliver has a classical and opera foundation; they are both known for their expansive and multilingual musical explorations. They bend and explore genres in new and beautiful ways.
This new song cycle sees Hue Blanes composing and on piano whilst Oliver Mann brings his rich and nuanced bass baritone. The show uses the traditional Lieder opera style to explore themes of loneliness, longing and the miraculous mundanity of being human. Hue’s deeply reflective perceptual gift for illuminating the everyday in his songs, combined with Oliver’s heartfelt and fully alive singing, makes for a show that is a rare and shining thing; disturbing in the best way, funny and tragic.

The Bombay Royale are an 11-piece outfit dedicated to honouring and reviving the funky, bizarre and mysterious music of vintage Indian films. This legendary hometown act is well known for its cult following. They have taken their unique sound to audiences worldwide (Glastonbury, Globalfest New York, Meredith, Boogie, WOMAD Australia/UK/NZ, Kennedy Centre Washington, Sakifo Reunion Island).
“The Bombay Royale is where A.R. Rahman and Ennio Morricone converge, where Slumdog Millionaire meets Goldfinger head on, with Quentin Tarantino and Indiana Jones lurking in the corner… Brash, brassy, bodacious and often cacophonous but never boring” – Tony Hillier (The Australian)

Latitude 37
7 October 8pm Kew Court House $33 Tickets $27 Concession
Named the ‘Father of Music’ by the King of England, William Lawes (1602-1645) stands as one of the most inventive English composers of the 17th century. Period instrument specialists Latitude 37 are joined by triple harpist Hannah Lane and theorbo player Nick Pollock to present some of Lawes’ most exquisite and yet rarely performed works in this concert of Lawes’ Harp Consorts. Featuring a unique combination of harp, bass viol, violin and theorbo, Lawes’ works for this blend of instruments results in a wonderful musical interplay between these unusual instruments.
The two plucked and two bowed instruments together create a special soundscape, with each instrument having its own independent part in a delicately balanced texture. Latitude 37 is an exciting baroque trio whose members were drawn together by their passion for historically informed performance of 17th and 18th century music. The special combination of baroque violin, viola da gamba and harpsichord opens up a wealth of repertoire that is rarely explored by other Australian ensembles.
