MEET THE ARTISTS Abdulwahab Alkandari

First of all, I would like to thank all of those who worked on this and the previous issues, without those efforts Artshot wouldn't have made it this far. We are now back with a new issue, with more room for inspiration and creativity, and yet another theme for our artists to challenge. It is my absolute pleasure to turn the pages of this magazine and see more known or hidden talents being in touch with our artistic community. The variety in used styles, perspectives, and media, is an inspiration to refill the artistic spirit in each and every one of us. As you flip the pages, you won’t help but notice the level of artistic maturity and challenge the artists are taking in perfecting their styles and ideas. I am very pleased to see familiar names and faces that have supported Artshot in all the released issues with their infinite creativity, and we look forward for more to come.

I

believe beauty exists everywhere & anywhere.

Exposing my art to reflect on feminism, corruption and racism that we observe on a daily basis. Humans are on constant struggle to coexist or reconcile with what they’re accustomed to, with what appears to them as bizarre. As a result we come up with specific set of paradigms examples to facilitate the inquietude of unfamiliar multiple cultures. As an artist, my artwork & my paintings are my weapons. That’s how I fight against ideologies that victimize women/children/ vulnerable people. Art, to me, is the mixture of different feelings & experiences. It is my uncensored

messages and that’s how

I take my own “line of flight”.

d i s to r t i o n My Technique

I enjoy using a variety of techniques in my paintings as long as the colors are raw and original and there's some sort of harmony. I do not limit myself in using one or two ways in creating my paintings, it's always best to get creative with whatever tool you have in hand. I use different size of brushes and mixing knives, also grilling skewers in order to create shapes and color streams on the canvas. As well as reusing ketchup & mustard bottles to mix my colors. And because my manicure can never last more than 3 days, I fix and paint the backgrounds with them. Sensing the colors and feeling the texture gives you the feeling of having the painting as part of you. At the end, it becomes too dear to sell.

Concept

T

he concept behind my painting is basically the Evolution of the Human Consciousness and rebirth. The "bird-man" in the painting is wearing a suit which refers to power, energy, strength and rule.

My art and design journey bega n when I started to look at artists and designers’ work. It gave me a new perspective for design. After graduating from high school I decided to study Graphic Design, so I applied to get a scholarship from the Ministry of Higher Education in Kuwait. I traveled to New Zealand to learn the language and study foundation courses . Getting accepted in the University was quite challenging and competitive since they require a portfolio and the seats were very limited.

Sometimes I feel like a plastic bag, drifting through the wind, wanting to start again. However, on one fateful morning, on a hot summer day, in that high school art class; I found the love of my life. A brand new 500ml plastic jar of paint. It was my calling to scoop up that liquid gold and spread on my blank canvas like peanut butter on a jelly sandwich. But then, out of the corner of my eye, I spotted some watercolors and it was as if I had been born again. I explored the endless possibilities of painting within the free region of my imagination. Frederick Wilcott was born in Los Angeles, California in 1969. He has been an artist since childhood and has always loved drawing, painting or taking photographs. He lived in Kuwait from 1984-1993 where he graduated from the American School of Kuwait in 1988. In 1998 he earned a BFA With Distinction from the prestigious California College of the Arts in the San Francisco Bay Area. While exhibiting his work in California and Nevada, he also became a Montessori teacher. Wilcott enjoys teaching children of all age groups and has privately taught students in drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and photography in his own atelier for 14 years. In 2011 he radically changed his painting style from Realism to Abstract Expressionism, using Mixed Media as a vehicle for his thoughts. He felt the need to paint whats on his mind and heart rather than simply what he sees around him. Now dividing his time between living and working in Kuwait and Swansea, UK Wilcott looks forward to exhibit his work and teach art in Kuwait in the near future.

Imagination VS. Uniquenes Amira Behbehani

I wake up very early in the morning but it takes me few hours to get out of the house; I

go through a lot of rituals for example read an online newspaper and check my social media accounts. I would definitely have an idea before I leave and head to the studio of what I will do there. When did people start noticing your artwork?

It was in 2oo3 when I started. But I think at that time nobody imagined I would be painting. No one around me was taking me seriously. Yet, there was nothing to stop me and I continued with it. How did you come up with this

unique style? What inspired you? The style came out by itself in the beginning by experimenting with different mediums and techniques. I love experimenting because it takes you from one place to another. The veiled woman in my artwork is a part of me. It might change and develop, but you would always see a veil. In addition to the ink work,I would also say it’s a part of me as well.

In which art movement do you see yourself?

I go through a lot of phases; I can be Realism, Abstract and Cubism, even Impressionism. However; overall I love lines,

Ever since I was a child, cartoons and animation were a part of my life. I never took art seriosuly until I decided to do it for a reason. Comics can say thousand words in simple lines, and that's what I aspire to do in my artwork. I try to strike a balance through my work, between being a critique of general social issues, and indirectly raise awareness about certain topics. LIVING IN A COLORFUL WORLD As a child, my mother was a Liberian and we had a lot of books at home, and I always remember myself drawing inside her books and she would shout at me for doing so. Consequently I grew up and wanted to go to an art school but my parents refused. Eventually I did graduate from a fine art academy. I always knew that this is what I wanted to do.

When did your art journey begin? I was in a good position since I was a child. When I was at primary school teachers would focus at my art and motivate me. Basically when I was growing up, people around me knew I was good at art and I knew that this is what I am going to end up doing. I can see you have a unique

defined style, how did you come up with your own art identity? I met different art teachers on my way and they all criticized me for using black. So first I stopped black color completely, and that’s why my paintings now are so colorful. Secondly, I like Klimt Style, and I am inspired also by the Succession Art Style, I like the decorative flowers as well. However my portraits started when I realized I didn’t know how to paint a face. So I had to learn to do it which took me some

Ever since I came to Kuwait I started painting camels and deserts and I quite like it. Also, the amazing colors of the fish market and Souq Al Mubarakiy are a great source of my inspiration. I can see myself drawing things like this from time to time because it is what I see everyday.

Then I draw an outline sketch. That is the most time consuming process as I seem to do it a couple of times until I’m happy with the composition of the painting. I mostly start the sketch with positioning the right eye and then work around it. I think the eyes are the most important feature in a human face so I always make sure I get them correctly.

After sketching,I start applying patches of color. At this stage it all looks very blocky and ‘work in progress’ sort of thing. I try not to cover the entire canvas with paint - just put bits of colors that are important to me. I usually use very strong and vibrant colors around the eyes, on the cheekbones.

After that, I pay a bit more attention to the background and try to choose the colors that will compliment the ones I’ve already used on the face.

@artshot_mag

5

After a week or so, when the previous layers are dry I try to blend the colors together so the painting looks less ‘blocky’ and more consistent. That gives the impression of smoother skin. At the same time I try not to over do it, because I don’t want my painting to look like a photograph. I believe the trick is in knowing when to stop smoothing the painting and to leave just the right amount of roughness.

6

At this stage I can focus on details like the colors of the eyes, the detailed shapes of the ears, the lips and the nose. Finally, I add very strong strikes of color to accent some areas of the painting.

I take a step back and look at it - the conclusion is always the same - I see the mistakes I've done and that drives me to start another painting straight away. I am seldom happy with the final result.

ENIGMATIC LANDSCAPE USING DIGITAL ART with Abdulwahab

D

igital art was the easiest way for me to share my work and incorporate with art and design communities. Also, in digital art mostly there is no need of medium and space to create artworks. What you need is a laptop, tablet, and a camera (sometimes). When you work there are various ways to adjust and play with layers, composition, colors, tone, texture, etc. Since I was aiming to study graphic design, I found digital art very helpful in this field and broadly used in graphics industry.

STEP BY STEP

tools i use Brush Tool

Smudge Tool

1

The first step to create my work is doing various sketches with different compositions in a sketchbook.

2

Secondly, I select the best composition and start playing and having fun in Photoshop. Sometimes I end up with something very different from what I started with. However, I stick with the main ideas.

Starting using graphic tablet wasn’t very difficult for me to get used to. My first experience with graphic tablet was 8 years ago. When I started doing my artwork I used to get my references and inspirations from art blogs and websites. However, when I did my foundation course before university, art books were my source of references.

The shoulders should be high in a slope. (length measured with an imaginary line that connects between the start of the upper part of the shoulder down till it withers). The angle of shoulders is 40-50 degree angle with the imaginary line perpendicular to the ground.

FRONT AND BACK LEGS When drawing the horse front legs from the side, the knee should be flat, and there is an imaginary line that crosses from the middle of the legs to the middle of the wrist. While the bone wrist and hoofs are slightly off the imaginary line by 45 degrees. It’s ideal to have a long high shoulders with a slope of 45 degree angle to give the Arabian horse a strong appearance. In addition, the back line length should be shorter than the abdominal line

As for the back legs from the side, there should be an imaginary straight line going down perpendicular to the ground. The wrist and Carpal bone should be on a medium height and inclined 45 degree toward the imaginary line.

BRUSHES

WHY? & WHEN? W

hen I started digital painting I had very limited brushes to work with. Basically I worked with two brushes, which are hard round brush and

soft round brush. After that, I wanted to approach something different that has realistic sense to my work. So I downloaded realistic brushes. However, there were a lot of sets that I wasn’t happy with. As a result, I ended up choosing the brushes I like the most and doing some adjustments to create my own. I’d also like to share some of my favorite brushes

I

add layers with different opacity and texture brush using the soft mechanical. Then, I put each layer with a specified color. At the end I mix it with the smudge tool. I use specific effects brushes to have a drop texture or a paint looking texture.

1

2

3

4

5

6

First, I colored the canvas base a black color, and started outlining the horse with white coal to give the colors richness (can also use oil pastels or chalk). It’s important to spray a color fixer on the coal to prevent mixing with other colors

Add oil on the canvas to ease the distribution of colors.

Now I start choosing the colors that I want to use and adding them to my coloring pallet tone for shading).

Add light color to the area’s where the light source is hitting the horse.

I use 3 brushes for my art

1. Marker Medium Brush for sketching out my drawing in detailed.

2. Soft Mechanical Brush to apply an inspiring texture. 3. No style brush to create details carefully.

Mix the colors that will be used in the painting.

Artshot Sp ring 2016

70

@artshot_mag

That’s how the horse will appear after the base is ready.

7 10

Spread the color evenly on the background, and add a blue color to the coloring pallet

8

The second layer is for the background and horse to emphasis on the colors with different tones without adding oil on all the canvas.

9

The third layer is when I add the strong light areas and the dark shadows, to clarify the muscles, bones and skull division along with the face details.

The painting comes to an end when the background color is spread all over the canvas and is also added to the horse to balance the painting appearance.

I am a 37 years old Lebanese/Canadian born and raised in Kuwait. I earned my Bachelors of Arts in Psychology with honors at Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec. Two years ago, I wanted to enhance my creativity by finding ways to capture moments through art and tell a story. I decided to pick up sketching/ painting and was practically self taught by watching artists on YouTube. I then delved into oil paint, pastels, charcoal and pencil work and it has captured my passion ever since. In 2013, two of my artworks were accepted at Dar Al Funoon in a young artists' collaboration exhibition where both artworks were sold. I have also exhibited at The American University of Kuwait (AUK) in 2014 at a student art event. My art has given me more depth and meaning into my life; and to hopefully continue showcasing my work locally and internationally. I sold a Pastel Painting “"She is Lebanon"” at Saatchi Gallery (American) on their online gallery on February 7th/2015.

Tale of two

cultures Fredrick Wilcott

In this article Fredrick Wilcott will elaborate on the influences of Kuwait and the greater Middle East on his development and work over thirty years. Some influences have been profound and others rather subtle.

“ In art you can never be better than you are at any given moment; however the daily, dedicated, continual and thoughtful practice is what makes all the difference in my work

Dhow at Low Tide Concordia University This painting titled Dhow at Low Tide, along with several others, was exhibited at

The Beginning I would say the first influence was my immediate arrival in Kuwait in August of 1984. The moment I stepped through the exit of the old Kuwait airport, the summer heat hit my face and I saw for the first time people who looked and spoke differently than any people I had ever known. However; rather than being shy and withdrawn, I was immediately hooked and felt right at home. As a young artist my senses were wide open to the sounds, smells and sights of this new culture. From an artistic standpoint, I was very lucky to attend and graduate from the American School of Kuwait. I had great,

well trained teachers in all subjects that challenged me to think differently with regards to my education. I thoroughly enjoyed learning the Arabic Language in school. I loved how it sounded coming from my mouth and writing in this script that felt fun, more like drawing to my artists’ eye that writes in English. Reading and writing Arabic is still a skill I utilize today whenever I travel to the Middle East. I have to say though, my biggest influence was my art teacher at the American School Marilyn Majors. She quickly realized I had a high skill level and natural instinct for color, composition and other elements

the Concordia University Gallery in Irvine, California March-April 1994. This was a solo exhibition that featured many of my works made around the theme of Kuwaiti Culture. The concept behind this and all of my dhow paintings in this period was twofold. First, I ofcourse wanted to make the paintings scenically beautiful. In this instance, the Gulf at low tide, the Kuwait summer sky bright, brilliant blue; the teakwood of the dhow weathered by ocean saltwater and intense sun; the ship itself at rest after perhaps a perilous journey. Secondly, I used the dhow as a symbol for adventure and exploration. From the Western point of view a dhow is a symbol for the antique and romantic. A visual vehicle to take you away to a far off place.

@artshot_mag

of making art. She challenged and pushed me hard to create in my own voice rather than just imitation. I realized that getting your hands dirty, making mistakes, learning from mistakes and coming out at the other end with a finished body of work to be proud of is what the creative process is all about.

Culture Influence During my time in Kuwait I absorbed the culture into my psyche. I chose to become friends with Kuwaitis and kids of other Arabic Nationalities. They and their families graciously took me into their homes and I was fortunate to establish friendships that I still have thirty years on. I feel more at home in the culture of Kuwait than that of the U.S. Now having married an amazing Kuwaiti woman and I am a part of her wonderful family, I am experiencing the culture of Kuwait on an even deeper level. In addition to Kuwait, I have traveled and absorbed the cultures of Tunisia, Egypt, UAE, throughout Europe, Asia and ofcourse North America.

As a result, dhows, deserts, mosques, camels, sadu patterns, musical instruments and more appeared in my work then. I wanted to show literally what I saw around me. However in 2011 I changed my style away from representational to abstract expressionism. I was feeling limited at the time I was not living in Kuwait. So I was feeling more like I was painting a past life rather than a present. Once the style shift occurred, it was like opening a floodgate. I worked more, with various mixed media and now I feel like I have come into true, mature style of my own that uses aspects from Kuwait on a more subtle level. For me the work is far more satisfying and my audience has grown to include viewers that appreciate the bold colors, compositions and themes I am working with. Because Kuwait is now my home

again I am excited to begin a family here. I also truly hope to partner with a quality gallery that will represent me and my work through solo and group exhibitions. I feel my work will find a wider audience as more and more of Kuwait’s art culture begins to discover me and my work. Furthermore, I am really anxious to find a school in Kuwait where I can be part of a team and teach my art knowledge to students and contribute to a culture that has given me so much over the years. I really love teaching children of all ages to explore their creativity and passing on what my teachers did for me. I hope your readers choose to have a look at my work closely and contact me if they want to know more about me, my work and my ambitions for my art in Kuwait for the future. Thank you very much.

The music, religion, food, language, customs play in integral part of what makes me an artist.

Every experience is useful to the artist. It may not come into the work for sometime, but those stimuli are rich source for creativity and innovation

The Present When I was a young painter I was more of a traditionalist. I preferred to render work that
