About the Programme “Island Interludes, from east to west; autumn verses, from ancient times to the present” Held in conjunction with the Mid-Autumn Festival, Island Interludes is an evening of Chinese poetry and chamber music exploring iconic landmarks and urban landscapes in Singapore. Drawing on the parallels between Chinese poetry as a lyrical recitation and Chinese chamber music as a melodic dialogue between instruments, Island Interludes takes audiences on a poetic journey through various sites and famous landmarks in Singapore, allowing them rediscover spaces that are both familiar and distant through the beauty of lyrical verses and melodies. The performance features excerpts from 23 poems by a myriad of writers across different generations, including Cultural Medallion recipients Wong Yoon Wah, Liang Wern Fook, Lin Gao, Xi Ni’Er and Zhou Can and award-winning young poets Chow Teck Seng, Tang Jui Piow and Zhou Hao amongst many others. Curated by Singapore Literature Prize-winning poet, Tan Chee Lay, the poems are recited by Lee Yong Tick, Liow Shi Suen, Mia Chee and Tan Chee Lay, paired with music composed and arranged by Phang Kok Jun, and accompanied by photographs taken by Lee Leng Kiong. It is performed in Mandarin and is part of The Arts House’s Poetry with Music series. 1

Goodbye, Changi Chow Teck Seng after a skyscraper disappears on the horizon after a tree in Changi is cut on the earth in the air, your breath is the only thing missing in this world, you will never know you are my last memory after an airplane loses contact in the sky the last page of a diary torn out after SARS, your death anniversary I’ll no longer recall flowers blooming or wilting the most painful beauty deep in the valley once the universe has witnessed the destruction of a hundred thousand Milky Ways once the solar system is engulfed by a black hole once the sun calls through a window across the floor of Changi Airport I’ll never see another glance I’ll never know why you left goodbye was always just another departure meeting and departing, the beginning has always been the end 4

Bird’s Nest Ferns Impressions of Bishan Park
Nan Zi early morning, a stroll in Bishan Park the water vapour in the air in an offering gesture rolls and moulds itself into pearls sparkling on the grass on tree tops the yellow-mouthed mynahs chant, in a politically correct tone in praise of the start, from here, of a gorgeous day I pause, looking up and see an old tree of mottled bark with history carved on its body amid interlocking branches and layering leaves nests of ferns cling, arrogantly their thick, bright green leaves reflecting the warm sunlight yes, bird’s nest ferns are parasitic what they need to live on their hosts provide to polish the splendour of their being they idle each day away people who do not know think – they have control over their own lives helpless, I throw up my hands my age doesn’t allow me to rage I should have realized long ago to become a member of the vegetable kingdom hanging on wholeheartedly to a huge tree is also a way

Photo courtesy of Lee Leng Kiong
Ballad of the Dragon Toa Payoh Dragon Playground
Pan Cheng Lui the evenings do not ever experience stage fright the sun always returns while basking in nursery rhymes if it rains all night everyone knows that at Block 28 the dragon is still silently tolerant he used to walk over carrying a bag that child from Toa Payoh, he climbed through the dragon observing its twisting body. No one believed the myth in this child’s heart just like no one believed that behind wave after wave of twenty-storey HDB blocks distant ships entered the port dragon heading southeast the wind rising, the boy longing for the mighty dragon’s wail
you didn’t see it? that sparkling dragon eye, the smiling dragon mouth Potong Pasir vegetable farmers in the streetlights completing the cries of life before the wakening of the city’s dreams an old temple recessed in the ground praying for good weather silent dragon, tolerant, has climbed through the man who has climbed through the dragon’s belly and dragon’s flip small stones adorned as dragon scales listen, memory displays an empty echo silent dragon, lonely and tolerant lush green lawn the dragon ballad sung by a new generation
_ Note: The Toa Payoh dragon playground, designed by HDB designer Khor Ean Ghee, was built in 1979. The 28 blocks that were its background have been razed to the ground. That was my home was for 17 years. The dragon head faced southeast, and on the road in front of it was the vegetable market where Potong Pasir vegetable farmers distributed their produce in the morning. Situated in front of Block 34, lower than the surface of the road, the Pu Zhong Temple was spectacular. From the 28 blocks of 20-storey HDB flats, Clifford Pier could be seen in the distance. The design of the dragon head, modified from the shape of a dragon, served both as a place for children to play and as a public sculpture. As the environment changed, it carries a past and looks forward to the future; the sounds of a new generation of children will continue to extend its role of merging joy with beauty. 17

Falling in Love with the Golden Sands Lin Rongchan you said, when does the ship leave? we tightly held hands silently looking at each other reflections melting in the ambiguous moonlight
on this brightest moonlit of the month in the undulating spray like a net intertwined in palm, swaying to the music my dream quietly opened a soft lotus
even without the light of the Statue of Liberty or the spectacle of the Great Wall the city possesses a Merlion that is tenacious in thunder and lightning
you said, when does the ship leave? we tightly held hands silently looking into the distance reading a beautiful myth in the moonlight

On Her Majesty’s Service,
The Fullerton Fan Jinghua Once, the priority letters sent and received here were marked On Her Majesty’s Service Things passed between the east and the west, values exchanged; all a bit ambiguous It seems it must have been occupied a hundred years before it could be built Facing the sea for another hundred years, the returning sea passengers like wandering vagrants Gently licking the lonelier nostalgia at the Cavenagh Bridge, a river Silently closes in vast waves, like arms embracing the warehouses and red lights Today, the Doric Colonnade remains a majestic site in this island nation Where did the bleak royal emblem go? Ask the lion sitting atop a fishtail? Which country’s English shall we use? When both old and new rich are welcome and sent off, showing a more dignified face Service, the guest and the lord with luxurious granite, all exchange the meaning of homecoming

Note: During the British colonial period, a milestone was set at every mile of the road to calculate distance. These were called “li shi,” or “kor chiok,” in Hokkien. In 1936, the Straits Settlement and the Malay Federal Statistic Office printed “Milestones in Singapore Streets.” The site of the General Post Office (now the Fullerton Hotel), built in 1928, was the starting point, with all roads radiating out, marked by the li shi. Mile zero originated from this. In 2014, Singaporean artist Akai Chew found a li shi in the roots between Lorongs 6 and 8 in Geylang, which was given to the Singapore Cultural Relics Bureau to preserve as a monument to enrich the li shi records. 25

Read Street and the old story teller both already silent but the words continue to tell that some degree of warmth must pass on from generation to generation you don’t need to lower yourself the tongue leaves its sheath after the sword is sealed engraved in a short, sharp symphony a past long gone from the tongue the moonlight of the prosperous Tang Dynasty remains snaking through the mouth He Zhizhang has long explained with his grey sideburns the local accent voices from the soil of Dantian the soil is firm the sound of waves from the first year of Xuantong roaring to this day how much courage of the sea-crossing can you salvage from the sea? the giant fish used to go south from the north nostalgia and fire in the mouth inlaid in one that scale-like story some degree of warmth must also pass from generation to generation let gavels line horizontally into a noisy street continuously speaking in a never-ending dialect

Trengganu Street: Drama Box Neo Hai Bin behind the green door squeaking and creaking with each step the wooden stairs sigh slightly generations of drama workers with each footprint, stepping on the steps of art in Trengganu Street where the crowds flow the old shophouse silently breeds drama after drama records of the old four-storey shophouse the artistic footprint of people coming and going the small green space on the top floor precipitates the reiki
the positive aura of the creators of dynasties producing show after show play after play entering the community each asking the other, numerous audiences the so-called performers, the so-called actors first, a group of people who care about the island nation and the small green space on the top floor in the sun of each afternoon quietly emitting the warmest mood

Nanyang University Wong Yoon Wah the storm was arriving at the end of 1973 shaking the coconut trees and banana plants on Jurong Road along the way I drove past Nanyang University’s big arch and found that the road to Yunnan Garden still wound in the distance but the road was already ruined the pavement pitted
after a few more years little birds hear the saga trees falling down amid chainsaw laughter along the road those rambutan and coconut trees become blocks of flats blocked me from revisiting nostalgia’s road
rambutan trees that lined the road, and I already felt it an unlucky sign especially the black police car of that era often entering and leaving the campus in recent years, the minister has also come to substitute for the principal silence on campus monitor lizards crawling out of the swamp for a look around at last 1979 lecturers and students were driven to attend classes at the University of Singapore, Bukit Timah June 1980 lecturers and students on holiday lorries line up full of out-going Chinese books returning back and forth through the school gate _ Note: In my diary on 19 June 19 1980, I pasted a Sin Chew Daily report on the Faculty of Arts, Nanyang University. The photo of the relocation has the caption: “Moving boxes of books and documents to NUS.” I wrote my own note alongside it, which read, “The tradition of Nanyang University has been evacuated with the boxes, in a big move.” 35
