YUSNOR EF CULTURAL MEDALLION I MUSIC Born in Singapore in 1937, Mohd Noor Mohd Yusofe (or Yusnor Ef, as he is better known) is widely regarded as a legendary figure in the Malay music industry. In an illustrious music career spanning over three decades, he has written lyrics for more than 260 songs, many of which are still being broadcast and re-recorded by new artists both in Singapore and Malaysia. Since the late 1950s, Yusnor has written lyrics for numerous songs composed by talented songwriters like P. Ramlee, Subir Said, Kassim Masdor, Zainal S. Abbas and Dick Lee, including Gelisah (as sung by Ahmad Jais), Lagu Peribahasa (Sanisah Huri), Zunika (A. Romzi), Di Ma/am Persandingan (Sharifah Aini), Senjakala (P. Ramlee), Nilai Cinta (Ahmad Daud and Saloma), as well as Tanah Airku (a malay translation of Home by Dick Lee). He has also produced albums by the likes of A. Ramlie and Rozianah Baharuddin among others. His CD compilation, Aku Dia Dan Lagu, which collects 128 of his songs, was launched in 2008. Yusnor is also a firm believer in the importance of education. His career as a Malay language teacher lasted three decades, before he went on to produce educational television programmes and write textbooks for primary and secondary schools at the Ministry of Education.

Aside from his work as a lyricist and educator, Yusnor has written stage plays and film scripts, and produced documentaries for television channels like Suria (Singapore), Astra (Malaysia) and Radio Televisyen Malaysia. In his effort to preserve and promote Malay music heritage, he has published books like P Ramlee Yang Saya Kenai (2000), 7 Magnificent Composers (2000), Melodies of Temasek (2005) and Muzik Melayu Sejak 1940... an (2011) on top of articles he has written for the Berita Harian newspaper, and essays for talks and seminars. Yusnor has served in various capacities to steer the development of Malay music and the music industry in Singapore. He has been on the board

of directors of the Composers and Authors Society oy Singapore (COMPASS) since 1990. In 1992, he founded and served as the president of PERKAMUS (Association of Malay Singers, Composers and Professional Musicians). Yusnor currently also serves as the Chairperson of the National Arts Council's Malay Music Development Committee, and is an advisor for National Library Board's Music SG. In 1997, Yusnor was awarded the Meritorious Award by COMPASS. He was awarded the Long Service Award and the Public Service Medal in 1994 and 2002 at the National Day Awards for his contributions to the arts.
